How To Get Published In Japan Or America (Publishing Manga & Comics Through A Company)

  • Hi everyone! In today's video, I talk about how you can get your manga published through a traditional publishing company.😁 When it comes to getting your manga published through a company, you first need to consider the country, and the rules for submitting your work. In Japan, most manga is accepted as one shots, and are serialized in a manga magazine such as Big Ribon, Bessatsu Margaret, Weekly Shounen Jump or Shoujo Beat, before being published in manga book form. In order to get your one shot manga published in Japan, one of the best methods is through submitting your manga into an online competition. I talk about these various competitions during the video.
    I also talk about the methods of getting published in America. In order to get the best possible chance of being published, it's helpful to write a cover letter, a resume or CV, a synopsis for your book, show character designs, and also previews of the chapters of your manga and potential cover art. Overall, the best way to give your book the highest chance of being published, is to really market yourself, and show your potential publishing company why they should publish your book.
    From there, I discuss some ways of combining various methods, in order to give your book the best possible chance of being published. I talk about how to market yourself, how to focus on your target audience, and how to make your book stand out among other books in your genre.
    I hope you enjoy this video, and it helps you kickstart your manga publishing journey!

    It is honestly a huge relief to know Americans can try and get into the manga field. I have been working on my manga art for years and didn't even think about the fact that me being an American could be my down fall. I was told I had to give up because I couldn't publish anything related to manga because I was American. This video helped me a lot and helped me focus on getting back to my idea. Even though it's not the best manga idea, but this really made me want to try.

    it was glossed over but, if you are going into talks with a company about publishing your work hire a lawyer and have them go with you to agree on the contract and negotiate terms. its a big ammount but it will be worth it when it comes to rights and monetization. That way you can maximize your benefit with working with a publisher while mitigating the downsides

    As a fellow Australian myself I find your videos incredibly informative and educational when it comes to comics and manga. As a webcomic author for the last couple of years I did my own research myself into Australias publishing. There are a few but pretty much, no quality control and no editorial staff so a lot of it is just a bunch of old men just putting garbage on the shelves and see what sticks. Providing stores let you put your books onto the shelves in the first place because of covid and what not. I would like to say there is a lot out there. There is Reverie Publications, Which is from a guy I believe who used to publish comics from around the 80's I believe. But in terms of the Manga side (and the reason why Im commenting in the first place.) Is that there is a small but upcoming Manga magazine called G'day Punch Magazine. When they do competitions they do cash prizes of 100 dollars. A bunch of Melbourne folks and such, they also have a pretty chill discord server. So think like Saturday AM but in our backyard I suppose. Can't wait for more videos. Truly inspiring.

      If your manga was published in a weekly magazine (such as weekly shounen jump) then yes, it is required that the chapters come out weekly. However, because of the strict deadlines, many manga artists work with assistants to help produce the pages faster.
      In most cases, manga will be published in monthly magazines, so if your manga was published is this format, you would likely need to produce the chapters per month. 😊

      That's an interesting question! Your best chance to get it published officially would probably be to write it in Japanese, and try and submit it directly to the Japanese magazines such as Dengeki Bunko or Dragon. However, you'd probably be better to try publishing it in a regular novel company in your country. If you can get popularity through a company in your country, then it's more likely it would begin to be noticed in Japan too. 🙂

      Yes, you can definitely do that! There is a lot more opportunities for self publishing nowadays than ever before. I would recommend looking into self publishing print on demand options, which can help make it easier to publish your book yourself. You can also look into getting the books printed yourself, and then distributing them via your website. I would recommend checking out this video I made recently, it's about publishing for light novels, but the self publishing aspect from 0:50 can apply to manga too! ruclips.net/video/DkusfA1QgYE/видео.html

    When you directly submit manga is it okay even if the manga is written in English and not Japanese?

    • @midnightXcross
      @midnightXcross  4 года назад +4

      You can submit it in English directly to the manga magazine, though it will be much harder for your manga to be published. It will be easier to have the chance to get published if it is written in Japanese. If your manga is in English, it may be easier for you to submit it in an online contest, or send it to publishers in your country. 😊

    Would I still need an agent like a novel publisher?

    • @midnightXcross
      @midnightXcross  4 года назад +1

      That's a very interesting question! Agents can certainly make things easier, but it isn't fully necessary. The difficult truth is, manga and graphic novel agents are quite hard to come by. Without having an agent, you will be required to approach the publishing companies directly. Some publishing companies will not accept a book unless it is sent in by an agent, however, I believe when it comes to manga or graphic novel companies (such as some of the ones in this video), they accept submissions without the need for an agent. Probably because agents in this kind of industry are so hard to come by. Plus, if you don't have an agent, you won't have to pay the extra that it takes to have one, meaning you get more of the royalties of sales from your book. 🙂

    • @midnightXcross
      @midnightXcross  Месяц назад +1

      In the majority of cases, the writer will find the artist to work with first, and form a partnership. Then they will usually create a manga together for a competition, and send it to the manga magazine this way. Bakuman is a good example of this, and it might be helpful to watch it. One character is the writer, and the other is the artist, and it gives a good insight into the manga creating industry. 😊

    • @midnightXcross

      It depends on the contest! Some contests, like Silent Manga Audition, can include any genre. But others like Jump Tezuka only allow shounen style manga. Make sure to check the requirements of each kind of contest, to see what genres they are looking for the most! 😊
