    Very helpful and informative video. I’m on a driving course at the moment and not once have my instructor advised me on checking my mirrors before changing speed. Mirror checks is still something I struggle with, but I think it’s also partly because I’m not being given clear instruction on them. The video has definitely helped a lot as it instils confidence in how to do things correctly. (❤️ all your videos btw!)

      @@gracekirigo9893 yeah they think they're entitled to fire rounds of questions at you. My first instructor tried to talk about relationships. One time he started talking about women who were in relationship with violent men. Then he started asking me if I've been in that kind of relationship! I just shut that conversation down and looked the other way. In the beginning he would ask me all about my family and what they do for work and where they live and he would repeat these same questions in the next lesson. Before I even finished what I was saying, he would be asking more questions again. He would then make a lot of sexual comments. Yuck. He also had a problem with making up stories. I could tell they were fake. He was such a weirdo. I cant believe i spent a year in lessons with him and putting up with his crap. And in the end I didnt even do my test ,I postponed it to next year. I lost loads of money to learning but didn't progress because of him. He even told me his reviews were written by his friend! To this day I think I should have written a negative review but the link has disappeared and I can't find that page of reviews about him. He wrote them because someone commented saying he was all about the money. Which I found to be true. I regret not leaving his lazy ass sooner. I think no lessons would have been better than lessons with him. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

    At 6:02, in addition to checking the right wing mirror before changing lanes, you should always look over your right shoulder. The wing mirrors alone will not show if there is a vehicle that is almost parallel to you.

  • @yaseminkaya4976
    @yaseminkaya4976 2 года назад +2

    Hi, so the the correct instances you need to check your mirrors and blind spots are:
    When signaling check centre mirror and the mirror of the direction you are signaling, no blind spot checks
    When changing position check centre mirror and the mirror of the direction you are positioning too, no blind spot checks
    When slowing down check centre only
    When speeding check centre and right mirror, no blind spot checks
    When doing a manovers check both blind spots and all mirrors
    When pulling off from side of the road check both blind spots and all mirrors
    When at traffic lights check all mirrors but no need to check blind spots
    When changing lanes check the mirror of the direction you are changing lane to no blind spot checks
    Thank you

    Can you PLEASE tell me when do we check ALL three mirrors?? IS IT ONLY when we are pulling OUT. ??
    If we did ALL 3 OUR eyes would be off the road for too LONG .
    .. I nearly had an accident doing all 3 because I was concentrating on the mirrors for too LONG.. ONLY started to concentrate on the mirrors AFTER watching these videos. ... I never concentrated on mirrors going around corners or picking up speed and slowing DOWN.
    Do you check ALL 3 mirrors when you're at the set of lights.. even if you're NOT the first in line ??

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  2 года назад

      We always make our mirror checks quickly, so we can return to looking at the road ahead. Whenever we look away from the road we are blind to hazards and can't steer precisely - so we must minimise any distractions, such as looking at the car's instruments, radio or even the mirrors! For that reason we rarely check all 3 mirrors at once when driving - although it is fine to that when stopped in traffic.

      That is a head-up display for the cars speed. It doesn’t flicker really, it looks like that on video because of the cameras shutter speed.

    When you enter a new road which mirrors should you check? Is it centre then right?

    • @mynameisroo94
      @mynameisroo94 4 года назад

      Also, this video is great but you instructed us to check the right mirror when overtaking a parked vehicle but didn't expand to say when returning to the normal road position after overtaking you should check the left too. I was defo taught to do that by my instructors.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  4 года назад +1

      We need to look out for any vehicles behind us - in case they are catching us quickly. The centre mirror is best for this, but we can check either side mirror if needed.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  4 года назад

      As we pass the parked vehicle we can see whether there is any danger (such as a cyclist etc) to our left - so we don't think an extra check of the left mirror really has any benefit. When driving on a multi-lane road we always check our mirrors (and blind spot) before changing lanes to the left of course!

      Advance Driving School ok thanks so much for your reply. I passed in September and haven’t driven at all since then until today. I feel like I’ve forgotten a lot of little things I was taught. I’d probably book a refresh lesson if i could.

    I have a question am curious how should a learner spend the time well understanding the instructor's ways to learn along with learning the safe driving? and how much do we need to spend? my friends had 40 hours of lessons and she spends £ 1,000 and the instructors say still she had a lot to learn before he can take the driving test.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  5 лет назад +1

      A good instructor will adapt the way they teach to suit the student. The length of time it will take is impossible to say as it will depend on how quickly the person learns. The DVSA say the average person needs 47 hours of professional lessons before passing their test, but we have had people pass with less than half this amount - and also more than double!

    All these videos about MSM never explain what to do when it’s not safe. Always what to do when it’s safe. Can you guys please explain what you would do if there’s hazards behind you and you want to change lane in a motorway to get to an exit/approach a junction/overtake a parked vehicle etc??

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  4 года назад +2

      If you can’t change lanes safely - then don’t! Stay in your current lane - and if this means that you miss your turning and need to take a detour, then that’s far better than putting yourself in danger.

    When overtake don't you also need to check left mirror, after moving back into your position. ?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  5 лет назад +1

      We would check our left mirror after overtaking another vehicle (to check we have fully passed it) but don’t consider it necessary after passing a parked car (as if there was any danger we would have seen it on approach).

    Is it wrong to signal then check mirrors before changing lanes or taking turns ?
    Thank you

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, we should always check our mirrors for danger before signalling to commit to the manoeuvre. Watch our other video about the MSM routine 👍🏼

    Can someone explain this to me. Why do we need to view the side of our car?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  4 года назад +1

      We find it useful to help us judge the sides of the car in tight gaps, or when manoeuvring. If you prefer, you can position the mirrors a little wider to cover more of your blind spot.

    Still not quite sure how to best adjust my side or wing mirror

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  3 года назад

      There are a few opinions on this! We like to have a little of our car visible (to help us judge when manoeuvring in tight spots) and the horizon roughly in the middle of the mirror. Other people set them a little wider to reduce the ‘blind spot’ area. You can do whatever you prefer 👍🏼

    So I just got a new car, but the rear window has low visibility, so I have to rely on the mirrors which is fine, but I'm stressed about using the passenger mirror to change lanes since objects in the mirror are closer than they appear. I'm worried I'll misjudge the distance and crash into a car. Can anyone give me advice on how to deal with that?

    Should u check ALL mirrors before changing speed ?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  5 лет назад

      You could, but usually the centre and right mirrors are enough. I guess it depends on the situation - just check where the danger might be.

    There was no mention about blindspots. Aren't you suppose to look over your shoulder when for example you make a line change on the highway.

    my driving instructor was always texting on his phone which is illegal. So I asked him isn’t it dangerous to look at your phone he said I have seen loads of bad drivers you ain’t one You drive like a Londoner (I don’t know if that’s good or bad to this day)
    although it must not of been that good as my first test was on New Year’s Eve (dark) (National speed narrow country Road) so I was doing 40mph with lights on and a sharp corner was coming up so I slowed down and as I turned the corner doing 14mph some idiot parked the car right on the bend that was covered with trees and bushes so you couldn’t see it until you were about 8m away so I went to turn round it and the driving examiner slammed the break I had no faults with roundabouts in that test. my second test I completely forgot how roundabouts work during the test and decided to go from the outside lane entering the roundabout to the centre and then straight back out on the outside lane although he did say I did it safely by checking there are no cars using the mirrors to the left or behind me and when entering and signalling that I was coming off and entering. I somehow did worse in my second one 😹😹 I practised 96 hours 2 hour lessons once a week every week for a year

    The most absurd time to check your mirrors is just before you signal for a turn. Please explain what you would see behind you that would stop you signalling for the next intersection? Look AHEAD to ensure that your signal isn't going to cause another road user to react inappropriately. Then check the mirror to get a reaction from the following vehicle. Surely/ No?
