I dont know who you are but it's because of you that I passed my test at the age of 36. I ignored all other things and just stuck to what you have explained here and i was fine. Constant pointless juggling of eyes from mirror to mirror makes it even harder to keep track of road signs and speed and many other things which could result in fail. All they want is you to drive "safely and legally" like you explain all the time. It's a small point but I feel this is what guides you on road and help you pass your test. I can't thank you Enough. May God bless you brother :)
Ok, telling people WHY they need to check their mirrors is one surefire way to make them learn to do it and *remember* to keep doing it quickly. I think that some instructors may suffer from the curse of knowledge; after all it is obvious why you need to check your mirrors once you actually know the reason. And when you know why, you will never be confused as to *which* ones to check, right? Also, one thing that I realised - having learned the theory and passing the theory test does not automatically translate to *applying* the theory. Especially the part about checking that no one is overtaking you - the rules explain extensively how to overtake, but do not even peep about how to be overtaken. Or when you must check that you are not being overtaken. Anyway, you are doing God's work here mate, bless you for existing.
On my 10th driving lesson I had a replacement instructor because my usual one couldn't make it that day. He told me to check my mirrors every few seconds, I said to myself, 'man, can I just focus on the road please, I already know no one's trying to overtake me, and I'm driving consistently 5 to 7km bellow the speed limit.' Later he told me that I should "make it obvious" that I have seen pedestrians that are getting close to a zebra crossing, or just any crossing in general by moving my head slightly or moderately in the direction of said pedestrian, because apparently, the examiner will pay attention if I do that. And that, just, infuriated me, I can SEE the pedestrians by just moving my eyes to them for a second, or even a split second, heck, I can even see them in my peripheral vision. To end my little rant, I want to thank you for these videos, they reassured me and learned me some things that I will put into practice when I get back into driving, keep up the amazing work!

Hey! I got my driver's license yesterday and I believe you've been great help in getting it although you are thousands of miles away from me, thanks to your great videos. Keep it up sir :)
this is the first online resource i’ve found that actually explains what you’re looking for in the mirrors!!! i’ve been struggling with when to check them because it seemed so arbitrary to me unless i was checking the rear view mirror for someone overtaking. this is so helpful and i’m sure i’ll be better at checking mirrors now that i know what i’m actually looking for! thanks so much!
Couldn't agree more. Been learning to drive for several years on and off with covid and money getting in the way so had different instructors all have them have told me to check mirrors and no one has told me what it is I am looking for when I do. When you know what and why then you are more likely to do it as part of safe driving instead of doing it but not really seeing whats there.

Really helpful as I am a PDI at the moment and you summarize this well. There is one small point I would prefer and that is to do with lane changes as although you are just dealing with mirrors, I think it is worth mentioning the blind spot check as well. Although we should all be checking in advance, occasionally attention slips and I personally prefer to always check this to be on the safe side.
Hi Richard, thanks to your videos I recently just passed my driving test, I really appreciate you putting in the time and effort to making these videos. But since passing I’m not going to be the perfect driver I was wondering if you would make a video on topics like petrol station positioning, what I need to know about petrol, things that you don’t necessarily go through with your instructor, also what I need to know about black boxes and first cars 🙏🏻
I think 90% of experienced drivers need to watch this video. It is fundamental but most people don’t check their mirrors at all, even when they open their doors Grade a idiots do exist. I saw a car indicating to go right in a one lane road and a car overtook them at a very high speed on their right side. You could imaging what would happen if that car turned right when the car behind was passing. It was just luck there was no collision. I suspect it was because the car turning right was an excellent driver and was looking at his right mirror and saw the glad a idiot approaching. Your videos are essential because you are giving learner drivers tips that they will hopefully use all their life when driving and not just to pass. We all know that experience is important but experience does not mean you are a good driver. If you have been taught the wrong way or have developed bad habits when you started, it is really hard to get rid of those habits. I see people make mistakes every day when I drive. Not using mirrors, not indicating, not in correct lane, not checking their blind spot, the list is endless. Your videos are helpful for both experienced and learners so thank you. I’m experienced but I’m here to be a better driver. When I change lane, I also check my blind spot. I doubt a lot of people do this at all which means if there is a cyclist or another driver is also turning into the lane you intend to join, you have a problem Biggest problem when driving is the misuse of hazard lights when reversing or parking. People see it and then they do it so it is becoming more popular unfortunately
Thank you so much for your help, your videos are really so helpful 🌹🌹🌹 I just passed my test now 💪💪💪 I been watching your videos for good time and it’s really clear and helpful, thanksssssssssss again
Awesome and very informative videos @Richard. Thanks a lot for making these, it helped me pass the test. Having migrated to UK in my 30s and having so much experience in driving, I was in a very tight situation when I failed the test due to mirror checks. I wanted a mock test but since I didn't want to take any driving lessons, no instructors were ready to give just a mock test. My 1 year with international license was getting over and I wanted to pass. That's how I started seeing your videos and I should say it enabled me to understand whole logic behind when and what mirrors to check. I passed my test with just 2minors that too not related to observations. Kudos mate. Cheers :-)
Conquer Driving School (RUclips), made came in handy for me after failing 3 times. I now know how to position my car in the middle of the lane and many more...
I was taught 'MSM' Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre. I've been driving for almost 50 years and recently I forgot to do this as I pulled back into the left hand lane behind a lorry due to a speed reduction thinking, but not checking, that the lane was clear. There was a BMW coming up behind me on my left hand side. The driver hooted and instinctively I moved back to the right hand lane. Fortunately nothing worse happened. I waved 'sorry' to that car. Maybe that BMW should not have been overtaking on my inside but it was my fault, I should have known it was there. You can learn from these videos even after passing your test and being an experienced driver who has never had any points on their licence.
Nice video! Well when driving I prefer to be as fair as possible. For instance, in a carriageway or motorway, I check my mirrors and see a car overtaking me, so my decision is to slow down a little bit, let's say about 2 or 3 mph less, to help that car complete its maneuver. Of course I do that when no one is behind me. Nice video tips and thank you very much Richard Instructor.
Thanks for this video, I failed one test due to over checking mirrors as suggested by my instructor, over checking mirrors can reduce the focus in the front and can cause bigger problems. I suggest instructors to please don't suggest unpractical things in the driving, which cause more problems than solving
@@ConquerDriving I failed 4 minors 1 serious was on the last 10 mins it’s my own fault going 35 in a 30 he had to tell me it was a 30 zone but the road was really wide
Really helpful video when there is so much conflicting information out there, thanks for clarifying this and I found the bit where you obviously checked the mirror every 10 secs hilarious 😂
4:59 Another thing I don't get about that is this: say there's a hazard fairly close ahead that's suddenly appeared and you need to brake a bit harshly for it. You're expected to check your mirror to see if someone's close behind otherwise you get marked down. But what are you supposed to do if you check and someone is close behind? Brake harshly anyway and risk getting rear ended? Or brake gently which will means you'll be hurtling towards the hazard too quickly? Like you said, surely it's common sense that you shouldn't need to check the mirror because if you need to brake harshly then you need to do it!
It's marked badly on the test if you ask me. If you need to brake harshly they mark it as a mirror fault but it's actually a planning fault. Usually harsh braking is the fault of the driver for noticing something too late. But if it is caused by something that can't be anticipated then the pupil taking the driving test should still pass. If it is an emergency then mirrors should not be considered.
@@ConquerDriving I agree. By the way, something relevant happened today while I was practising; I was doing 25mph on approach to a slight right hand bend and a stationary car in the middle of the lane came into view, a little way ahead. Up until that point I had been checking the interior mirror now and then along the road and nothing was behind me at any point. I had to brake a bit harshly and I didn't check the mirror before - like you said in the video, I didn't want to delay the braking by looking in the mirror first, my instant reaction was to brake straight away. Do you think I did alright?
Do you need to check your blind spots when you moving out from traffic lights after the light turn to green? And also do you need to check your blind spots whenever you're changing lane and also in roundabouts? I am just confused because everybody says different things, thank you in advance, I always believe in you, you are the best instructor and I benefit from your amazing videos alot
Just an point made for the “I have never had a student marked down for braking gently without checking mirrors” I took my test today and failed because I wasn’t doing this I know it’s examiner dependent but still I’d always check mirrors from now on if I was touching that brake pedal as some examiners can be much harder on mirror checks when braking
I know this video was created 2 years ago with some month added up or maybe less month. Regardless this is good education video. I am from Canada So portions what you said about mirrors is helpful, I even learned to adjust my mirrors when I have to back up into a parking stall which helps a ton!! I learned that from another video you created.
I passed my driving test the other day and I gotta say two things: 1. Thank you, Richard. 2. If you have your test coming up, I wish you all the best; you can do it 💪
I just failed with "use of mirrors - change of direction" for centring myself in a wide lane in preparation for it narrowing a few seconds ahead (like the cars in front of me did, and most cars on Street View). Apparently if the lane is wide enough you can "change direction" without changing lane and mirror checks are still required. Makes sense as bikes could easily take the gap but I doubt I would have failed if they had actually painted some lane dividers.
This is the most logical instructor I’ve ever heard

Hi Richard, thanks to your videos I recently just passed my driving test, I really appreciate you putting in the time and effort to making these videos. But since passing I’m not going to be the perfect driver I was wondering if you would make a video on topics like petrol station positioning, what I need to know about petrol, things that you don’t necessarily go through with your instructor, also what I need to know about black boxes and first cars 🙏🏻
Congratulations on passing your driving test. Thank you for the ideas, I may look into this in the future.
You’re a great teacher and I’m very confident I’m going to pass my driving test 😊
I have problem with checking the mirrors while driving you solved my problem thank you sir.
You are a super teacher, you have really impacted my driving knowledge
Hi bro, thanks for all your videos bro. I was able to pass on my third attempt and all the information you shared really did come in handy.
The way he checks his mirrors in every ten seconds!! 😅 hilarious! And useful video as well. I have learnt a lot watching his videos.
I think 90% of experienced drivers need to watch this video. It is fundamental but most people don’t check their mirrors at all, even when they open their doors
Grade a idiots do exist.
I doubt a lot of people do this at all which means if there is a cyclist or another driver is also turning into the lane you intend to join, you have a problem
Biggest problem when driving is the misuse of hazard lights when reversing or parking. People see it and then they do it so it is becoming more popular unfortunately
Thank you so much for your help, your videos are really so helpful 🌹🌹🌹 I just passed my test now 💪💪💪 I been watching your videos for good time and it’s really clear and helpful, thanksssssssssss again
That's great news, congratulations!
Passed my test today! Your videos helped me so much; thanks for all your help!
Congratulations on passing!
This really helps me thank you, driving lesson this week, still a bit nervous but getting better.
Good luck with your test!
Thank you very much for your videos, I'm from Australia and your videos helped me pass my driving test
I'm very happy to hear that. Congratulations!
got my test tomorrow and this is helping to make me a little more confident, thanks for the vid.
Good luck tomorrow!
The best instructor ever!
Really great videos you have taught me so much… I didn’t even know how to adjust my mirrors .. no instructor ever told me 😊🤩🥳
Thanks for this video, I failed one test due to over checking mirrors as suggested by my instructor, over checking mirrors can reduce the focus in the front and can cause bigger problems. I suggest instructors to please don't suggest unpractical things in the driving, which cause more problems than solving
I agree with you about not focusing on things that aren't useful. Check your mirrors when you need to.
The best instructor.. learned a lot. Thanks
My test is today at 11:38 so nervous but I’m seeing it as excitement really helps
I hope it went well.
@@ConquerDriving I failed 4 minors 1 serious was on the last 10 mins it’s my own fault going 35 in a 30 he had to tell me it was a 30 zone but the road was really wide
Thanks Richard for putting up this video, it was really helpful & so are all your videos
OH LORD! i am so thankful for your videos 🙏 💛 these have been the only things helping me !!!
Many thanks sir I’ve passed my exams today you are absolutely an amazing teacher 🎉
That's great news! Congratulations on passing!
Watching this video got my test tomorrow, a bit nervous & my 1st test
Good luck!
250k subs are coming sirrrr!
Love the video man, keep up the good work
Thank you, I may do.
Another fantastically informative video. Exactly what I needed to know! Thank you so much for your great work
Checking the mirrors every few seconds!🤣😂yes I was doing that! Thanks for the great video again
proper video richard with some real life examples, love it thanks
I liked your tip about not checking mirrors before braking harshly. It's a good tip. Thanks.
Thank you for the hard work you put into your videos, they REALLY do help.
Thanks a lot i am pass my test with your help it's recommended ❤🎉
Very brilliant instructor
Hi if you’re not too busy, can you please make a video of what are blindspots exactly and when to check them. Thank you
This video may help: ruclips.net/video/L59Bl3rQTA4/видео.html
Very useful and important tips.
Could u pls make a video on overtaking in one lane roads
It's a difficult video to make, but I may try at some point.
@@ConquerDriving 👍😁
Really helpful video when there is so much conflicting information out there, thanks for clarifying this and I found the bit where you obviously checked the mirror every 10 secs hilarious 😂
Thanx for the vid I am going to do my test in a few hours and just wanted a recap
Your videos have been very helpful, watching from South Africa.
More excellent advice from the best dressed driving instructor on You Tube.
Thxs u so much. U r absolutely God send with my driving learning misery
thank you for this video! i was literally thinking about this exact thing earlier - i am RUBBISH at observations 😭
You would fail for "mirrors - change of speed" if you are not braking gently.
AMAZING SKILLS I LEARNED.WELL EXPLAINED. THANKS 🙏
I know this video was created 2 years ago with some month added up or maybe less month. Regardless this is good education video. I am from Canada So portions what you said about mirrors is helpful, I even learned to adjust my mirrors when I have to back up into a parking stall which helps a ton!! I learned that from another video you created.
“Grade A idiots do exist” never a truer statement 😆
I passed my driving test the other day and I gotta say two things: 1. Thank you, Richard. 2. If you have your test coming up, I wish you all the best; you can do it 💪
Congratulations on passing!
I'm learning so much from you. Thank you
I have learned many things from you. Thank you very much!!
