- With Steven Universe Future ending we thought it might be a good time to look back at the entire history of the show and talk about what made it almost perfect. From Steven's humble beginnings with Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl, to his epic conclusion in the battle against Blue, Yellow, and White Diamond, there is a lot to cover on what made this show so good, but as the title suggests along the way there was some bad as well.

if sugar hired some men, maybe the story would make sense. the conclusion to main and future arc is way too childish, those women behind the work had no difficult decisions in life, i bet they wanted to make men the creators of the diamond authority.

@@bernardocomassetto it's true watch storyboard all male directors were special guests exept Ian coz he's sugars boyfriend. males storyboard mindful education, bismuth, steven fusion in CYM etc. some of the best moments of the show. if you look all episodes with animation errors they were directed by women. no wonder steven is a mess in future. the show only's problem is their girls power bdsm agenda. if they invited proffesional storyboard artits (with no male restriction) this show would be much better.

I mena when I first saw him encounter the cluster he already seemed like he was being traumatized
It makes it more realistic, steven has been through a lot at a young age, more so than any kid should so it makes sense that some kind of trauma was gained from them
I'm not sure if I'd call it close to perfect but it was still good in my opinion.

*What SU needed:*
-20-minute episodes.
-Fix what you spoke about in S4 and S5.
-Fix the RACE TO THE FINISH LINE ending. Seriously, the redemption and changeover was way too fast, IMO, in general, and the last "steven bomb" in specific had pacing that was ridiculous what with all the fusion reveals and action and so on.
-Fix seasonal formatting to either be 5 seasons outright or the 3 seasons it was supposed to be since most stories have either 3 acts or 5 acts.
-Cartoon Network to not have d*cked it over for all these years and just released it on a normal schedule.
-Taller steven from his 14th birthday becoming the permanent norm somewhere in or after season 4.
*What SU movie needed:*
-Longer.
-Slower redemption.
-SPINEL NOT GOING WITH THE DIAMONDS. (Like, HELLO, PTSD MUCH??)
*What SU Future needed:*
-More brains for Steven.
-20-minute episodes. I could pass this on the more childish OG show, but by now it'd be necessary, IMO.
-THERAPY. SPEAKING ABOUT ISSUES. I mean, COME ON, it's like everything he learned in the OG show and movie went in one ear and out the other.
-Longer, maybe 2 seasons, but since the rule is either 3 or 5 to a set, that might mean you'd have to go 3. Unless you just made the ONE season long enough to cover the 3 arcs of a story.

We will always remember Steven Universe
Now I love SU but youtubers are WAY too quick to use the word perfect. Steven Universe was plagued by serious pacing flaws and visual inconsistencies and the plot in many places made no sense or fell apart. The resolution to the cluster arc was anticlimactic and the s5 finale was seriously botched. The diamond's redemption was laughably stupid. The beach city characters are uninteresting for the most part and the fact that every episode goes through steven weakened the show a lot. The shot composition is largely uninspired. Steven Universe had some incredible moments and messages that not others have shared but the show had serious issues in its presentation and storytelling that make it far from perfect
Took us till season 3 for Jasper and Lapis fusion monster to be resolved, then the cluster was kinda tacked on along with it.
I love Steven Universe but to even call this show "near perfect" is not only incorrect, but shows how rose-tinted (pun unintended) it is to the fandom

I actually don't use the word perfect or almost perfectly too often. I would say that there is only one show I refer to as perfect, this one as almost perfect, and that is it.
I think Change Your Mind is a little under appreciated. I understand it felt a bit rushed, but I don’t think they could’ve written a better takedown of the diamonds within the same time slot. We always knew Blue was emotional and capable of feeling some semblance of empathy for others so it makes sense she would be the first to feel remorse for what she did to Pink and others. Yellow held up a touch experience but was obviously weak when it came to blue and would not be able to stand up to her. Showing that Steven was no longer pink and that White is not purely white is the fastest way to completely destroy White’s world view without a shadow of a doubt, gems can change, you are demonstrably not perfect, the two things you base your rule on can no longer be substantiated. I think they did about the best they could do to make the diamond’s change of heart believable in one episode, at least to me. I definitely come back to the SU finale more than the SUF finale, it’s a pretty tight episode.

No show lasts forever. People said Gravity Falls Season 3 would happen. Guess what?
Together forever felt like the most forced out of all of the episodes of future. There are plot holes that aren’t acknowledged at all like how steven had a magical pink lion that could warp him to Connie. Lion can warp to the moon I am pretty sure the distance from Connie to steven is far less than the distance between the distance from the earth to the moon.
Also wouldn’t garner see that there would be a future where steven would ask for advice from her.
I get it had to get to steven blowing up but the way together forever was setup was poor compared to the rest of the series. It felt like they had to get through this to get to the climax .

Steven Universe may not have been perfect, but it was amazing and enough to fill our hearts with love and entertainment across the years, the effect it had on a huge part of the community was enough for most of us, me at least, I can only say,

If they had less filler, less hiatus time, and more epic battles and villains like Jasper the show wouldve been a lot better in terms of the plot. I also feel like Rose being pink diamond ruined Rose's character.
Remember: it's a slice of life first since season 1, so "filler" is quite debatable depending of the episode.
Hiatus was a issue at the time, but it's all on CN fault, heck, even Berserk and HxH (works of fiction that suffer from long hiatuses) shouldn't have "hiatuses" as a inherent quality problem, it's just a experience being ruined by exterior factors.
About Rose being Pink, I really think it's debatable. I understand people getting mad, but I also see positives in a ideal perfect character being consistently shown flaws over time as an arc for the protagonist.

no I liked her more AFTER the pink diamond reveal it made her dynamic and interesting on top of it being clear she wasn't perfect I think she was a well written character even though presently she didn't appear at all
I always thought she was a boring character up until Bismuth’s introduction, having her turn out to be flawed properly fleshed her out as a character and made for a more interesting watch
UNTAPPED potential. The Gems and their history was what pulled people in. All the emotions made us care, if you care. Rose Quartz miniseries with more action ftw tho.
Steven Universe was a part of Golden Era of Cartoon Network. Personally I would give it 70% out of 100

Change Your Mind sure is a very rushed and in some way unsatisfying way to wrap up the story, to be honest.
It was good, that’s it. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this work from Rebecca Sugar. But this is just the beginning. She definitely didn’t create anything perfect just like every other artist with their first work. I don’t believe this can be her masterpiece when it is her first.

This wasn’t perfect at all I love the show but it’s OK way better things before or better and things in the future because they had limitations placed on them that other shows hadn’t and learned from the mistakes from the show

i agree with your analysis of season 1-3 being great while 4 and 5 being slow in pacing as if there was no more story but i think a huge part of the flaw of season 4 was the controversies of the fandom of SU that affected the story of SU after season 3 was done There were many harsh feedback to the show that actually lead changes to the story which made the crewniverse more careful with what they were writing for the show.
I'm not sure if that is true, by the time season 3 finished airing they would have to have been really close to finishing season 4 and 5 at that point, keep in mind it takes 9 months just to make an episode, and a large chunk of season 4 was already available to show immedaitely after season 3 finished airing, it seems like any criticism at that point could only affect the very ending.

Then that's an interedting detail. Considering they had "9 months" to make an episode making it understandable that they did put a lot of thought and hardwork in it which is respectable. Even with all that time they were unable to fix the inconsistent animation, slow pacing of story, imbalance of filler with nonfiller episodes and lack of use for some characters on the final seasons which is very crucial to the story. Instead of improving their animation from seasons 1-3 given that they have the experience, it's the exact reverse instead of improving.

RUclipsrs are way too quick on using "perfect" to describe something they like.
I liked SU quite a lot until season 4, rewatching it in its entirety has shown me quite a bit that it is FAR from perfect. Narrative flaws, rushed character arcs and unspectacular animation from the very beginning are dragging it down for me. A lot of characters are underutilized as heck and some, once they got their narrative arc resolved just turned into decoration and not much more.
SU had potential but the crewniverse threw it out of the window many times.
If I had to put out a numerical score SU would get a 4/10 from me...
closer to a 5 than a 3 if that makes anyone feel better but still a 4.
