Beautiful shots, Richard. These are my favourite subjects for nightscapes. They always look so impressive with your light painting applied. Great video, as always, and thanks again.
Wow!! Those both turned out stunning. What a change to see you in a puffy jacket this episode and last one in just a shortsleeved shirt. But I know how it is in the country on crisp clear nights. Always cooler than the city. Bet Tony was surprised to see those images. Thanks for sharing with us my friend. Have a wonderful weekend. 📷☕️🍪
Thanks a lot for watching John. Tony loved the images .. I think there may be more subjects to come down the track. Yes I much prefer the cooler nights.
Lovely once again! You were so lucky to get some clouds on the left side of your red truck image as it really filled the space. Great images and I enjoyed a wonderful Aussie night with you. Thanks for taking us along!
Awesome as usual Richard, gosh that old merc needs a fire breathing v10 in it. And as for the Morris that needs a supercharged 590 big block with nitros !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Two wonderful images. You said that wispy cloud might set off the first truck and boy did it work... the position and angle of that cloud to the MW balanced the image beautifully. Just love your videos, Richard, thank you so much.
@nightscapeimages.richard that's a plus. Your videos have a relaxing and educational aspect to them that I thoroughly enjoy. I'm looking forward to the next one.
Wont be quite as late on the 8th but I'm in the same boat with my next shoot right next to someone's house out at Eppalock, wish it was a truck but it's a cool dead tree that the owners tried grow a vine on that has also died and is hanging off it
another beautiful Video stunning images Im from England but was lucky enough to visit Perth and Margeret River in Jan 2020 the skies blew my mind i don't get to see really dark skies as i live very close to Manchester
What a beautiful scene! It seemed like a really relaxing morning of nightscaping - great images, Richard. Love that you have the dedication and professionalism to capture some b-roll of driving off, despite everything in you saying “please get back to bed!”.
Fantastic video and images Richard. It's interesting you chose to shoot the foregrounds first given the time restraints but all worked out great in the end.
Thanks again for watching. In the example of the first truck. I shot the sky shots first as I stacked them from the original tripod mounted location. That one isn't a tracked sky. Then I light painted the foreground. In the second example I shot the foreground with the intention of using a tracked sky . .which I had already shot before that. Sometimes the sequence shown in the video isn't totally the same as I'm always running around making sure I can get the images first before clouds roll in or conditions change.
Beautiful results, Richard! Thanks for sharing and also to just call it what it is: getting up at 2 in the morning is hard, and countersleepcyclic and it makes people sleepy! So your work is even harder and the results are even more impressive. Gosh, I miss the Australian nights and nature... Thanks again for taking us with you over and over again, much appreciated!! 😊
Richard you never disappoint with your images, I only wish you had more workshops, there so hard to get on. Testimony to your brilliance. Enjoy your work.
Incredible how clear is the Milky Way at your location since the camera you use to film yourself was able to capture it so I guess it might be perceptible with your eyes
Excellent! I’m heading to Oz this weekend to spend a couple of week doing deep-sky imaging and observing near Coonabarabran, NSW. Looks like the weather could be iffy!
Good on you Alan. The weather in the central and north eastern parts of Australia has been very iffy for months now. They've had a lot more tropical type rain than normal. Down here in the south we did cop a little taste of that around Christmas time but not much since then. I hope you have a wonderful trip.

Great video and fantastic images Richard. It’s never easy getting up at that time of morning (really the middle of the night) but it sure pays off when you have good conditions and interesting subjects. I really need to find a way to get down to Australia and on one of your workshops!
Richard, I enjoy your video, very educational and the photos are awesome. The "V" mount didn't seem to work for me. I couldn't get the camera and the "V" mount to stay open. I am glad it works for you.
Great images as always Richard, wonderful to see the core in all its glory again. But a lens warmer in Feb in Australia 😂😂😂 what’s our weather doing to us. At least it probably meant the bugs were not to bad.😁
Another fantastic set of images Richard, I have learnt so much from your Videos and keep watching them over and over ! Your phone setup for the Star Tracking works a treat. I have down an App for leveling my Tripod called Bubble Level, it has a quite large bubble to make it easier to level ! Also on another RUclipsrs channel he mentioned about Photpills having a Northern Star centering, you go to spot stars, put in your camera and lens etc then press the AR at the bottom of the page. Have tried it during the day and yes its easy to setup ! Many thanks for your helpful and very thorough Videos. Cheers from NZ
Thanks for your kind encouraging words Royce. I've tried photopills spot stars. . but it's not as accurate as sky safari I reckon. But it will get you close.
I love those old truck images. My thought on you being careful not to wake the farmer's family is, do you ever get approached by the police when you are making these photographs?
Awesome images. Question: is it still necessary to stack sky photos given how good denoise algorithms are in Adobe LRC or in other noise reduction software? Thanks for your input. Kind regards
You should check out last weeks video. There are other reasons besides noise reduction to stack images. It increases the signal to noise ration which gives more detail in an image as well. Same thing that tracking does also.
Hi Richard, another awesome video!!! I have another crazy question for you! I noticed a lot of light pollution on the horizon to the bottom right, and a little on the left side!!! About how far are those cities from your shooting location??? When does light pollution messing up your photos??? I could even see the light reflecting off the clouds. Lol and your photos still have good contrast. Do you process differently for light pollution, compared to a black sky with no light pollution??? Thank you for your awesome help!!!👍👍👍🇺🇲
Thanks for watching Marvin. This is minor light pollution . .the town on the left is about 1 hours drive away and medium size. The town on the right is about 30 minutes drive away but a much smaller village. The location of this shoot is classified as Bortle 2 so the light pollution isn't overly affecting the sky at all. It will light up the clouds a bit but I actually like that look. Also mild light pollution can actually add a nice background glow to a foreground subject .. I use that all the time in my images. When I process these images I'm always careful not to blow out that lit portion of the sky. PS: I never shoot in heavily light polluted areas.
Thank you for the info!!! You are always very helpful!!! I'm weighing my options of driving 3 1/2 hours to get to a location that has zero light pollution, or a 1 1/2 drive and have all of the light pollution behind me. This would give very little light pollution looking to the southeast!!! I'm going to give it a try to see what I get!!! It will be my first attempt sense learning how to do this from your awesome videos!!!! Thank you so much!!!👍👍👍🇺🇲
Thanks Rob. Yes this was all shot with the astro mod camera. I've found that using the 1/2 cto gel covered torch does well .. LED light panels not so good. Just working through the colour temps that suit with them.
How long do you usually spend on a shoot? How many minutes or hours is set up? I guess how do you Location scout or plan out your shoots as well? I've really enjoyed your videos over the years. Thanks for sharing your insights!!
Thanks so much for your great support. I spend many hours driving around looking for compositions during the daylight hours. I mark them in my gps for future opportunities. I'm usually looking for subjects that face the right way to line up with the milky way or other subjects in the sky I want to have in the background. If I wasn't shooting videos of my adventures it would be very quick to get setup and ready to shoot. And also the shoot itself would be pretty quick. I like to shoot multiple targets in a night if I can, as you would have seen from my many videos.
Thank you Richard for the pictures! It’s a great idea to label the items of your equipment. I just got me a new Star Adventurer GTI to get better payload options compared to my MSM tracker. So do you never use the counter weight on your 2i? Is it just not necessary with your camera?
Thanks for watching. Yes I'll use the counterweight if I'm using a very long focal length camera . .for example shooting the moon etc . .but I hardly ever use that lens.
As always, love your images Richard! How much difference in noise do you see in say, 20 stacked sky images, verses a single image on a tracker? Thanks! Still waiting for you to come out to California to visit several parks! Kerry
Thanks as always for your great support Kerry. To be honest I think 20 stacked and tracked shots for these type of images is way overkill and completely unnecessary. As you would have probably seen of my work over the past couple of years, I often choose to shoot single tracked sky shots because they come up so well. Most people don't see much difference anyway and I'm certainly not a pixel peeper. Maybe one day to sunny California ..!!!
Yes you're probably right John. That's why I like to use good quality lenses. I've been shooting a bit at f1.8 lately. I often add vignettes in post anyway.
I love my sigma 40mm because it's got no issues in the corners even wide open at f1.4 but it makes my 20mm look so Terrible in comparison but I love the 20mm field of view ! @@nightscapeimages.richard
Hi Richard, I'm watching your video's for a long time now but still have one big question. Do you see the milky way with your naked eye or is it only revealed due to long exposure. In the latter case how is then possible that the stars aren't blown out?
Thanks for watching Frank. Here in country Australia the milky way is clearly visible to the naked eye. We have plenty of opportunity to get away from large light polluted cities. As you can see on the live video footage, the stars shine bright.
Yes the Milky Way in S Africa is also currently up just before it starts getting light at the moment >> Happened to me last week at Plettenberg Bay 04h00 photography g
Nice pictures! Is there a reason for shooting (and i guess somehow stacking) several pictures of the foreground instead of taking one longer exposure of it?
Yes absolutely. You'll notice the different settings I used to shoot the foreground. This is the basis of what I call my Fine Art Light Painting method. By stopping down the aperture and decreasing the iso I'm creating a very clean and detailed image of the subject. It also displays a very high dynamic range. If I shot a long exposure of the foreground I can't control or add the light as I have done here. Also it makes the final edit more constrained as I don't have options to use or not use the various images. For a simple foreground you could possibly do it with one exposure but it takes a lot of practice.
In this example I'm not exactly stacking .. rather I'm blending the foreground images. I have many videos on this procedure. See here: ruclips.net/video/3uXHTmwcaFM/видео.html@@mistaskate8715
@@nightscapeimages.richard That was a great tutorial! Very inspiring! If I now understand you correctly you stack/blend the foreground images only for the artistic lighting purpose, and not at all for noise reduction (like when stacking the milky way)?
Yes that is correct. By stopping down the aperture and lowering the iso the foreground image is sharp and noise free . .no stacking for noise reduction required. @@mistaskate8715
Possibly a dumb question here. If it is, I apologize. Is there a difference photographing the milkyway from where you are to the U.S ? The reason I ask is because it looks like you get a bigger, brighter milkyway than I do in the U.S. I typically stack at least 5 images and am typically around 15 sec, 2.8, 6400 iso on a 15-30mm lens. Sometimes I use a 24-70 2.8 lens but I can't get anywhere near your results. We do deal with a fair amount of horizon light pollution, but still I cannot get close
That's not a dumb question at all. And the answer is yes indeed. The milky way we see here in Australia rises much higher in the sky and therefore it makes it brighter and easier to see. The other big plus for us here is that it's easier to get away from light pollution into darker skies. This image is shot in Bortle 2 skies looking into Bortle 3 on the horizon. The light pollution you see in this image is from a small town so it's doesn't completely blow out the sky at all.
I typically use a LED Lenser P7 series torch. I do attach a 1/2 cto gel to the front to balance out the typically blue LED colour tone. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/44201-REG/Rosco_RS340811_3408_Filter_RoscoSun.html
Well we don't necessarily . .but I wanted to capture all the details of the truck .. because it was a bit wet .. it makes it harder to avoid reflections in the windows, so I took more than normal to avoid that.
Superb images as always Richard....the old Mercedes turned out great in spite of obvious lighting challenges.....well done, dude!...cheerio!🍻

I love my sigma 40mm because it's got no issues in the corners even wide open at f1.4 but it makes my 20mm look so Terrible in comparison but I love the 20mm field of view ! @@nightscapeimages.richard
I think the new Sigma 20mm DG DN is smore similar to your 40mm but it's only Sony mount. @@johncarter591
Yes the Milky Way in S Africa is also currently up just before it starts getting light at the moment >> Happened to me last week at Plettenberg Bay 04h00 photography

It''s a nice quiet time to be out under the stars.
@@nightscapeimages.richard Okay. Makes total sense now! How do you stack the foreground images?
What torch do you use for light painting?
I typically use a LED Lenser P7 series torch. I do attach a 1/2 cto gel to the front to balance out the typically blue LED colour tone. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/44201-REG/Rosco_RS340811_3408_Filter_RoscoSun.html
Have you ever driven off only to realize you forgot a camera?
Not a camera but I have left tripods behind.
cuales serian los parametros de camara para fotogrfiar correctamente la via lactea?
I have many videos on this topic. See here: ruclips.net/p/PLAYKmqkUeSM9yi-P7iTDM94IAFCazTSTG

first viewer after 38 seconds lol
Thanks ,for your commitment Christian
Why do we need to take so many photos of the foreground?
Well we don't necessarily . .but I wanted to capture all the details of the truck .. because it was a bit wet .. it makes it harder to avoid reflections in the windows, so I took more than normal to avoid that.
Очень круто! Привет из Якутии
Thanks so much for watching my friend
I need to come do some shots with you one time and learn some skills from you haha
You're doing quite ok mate.
