  • The CL100 is the first LED light from newcomers Colbor. It's a 100W monoblock style LED light with a Bowens modifier mount and a couple very nice features, but is it any good?

    I am a big fan of remotes vs. apps. Apps are a thing you have to worry about, get your assistants to learn and dedicate a device for it. I much rather having a remote that I know "just works". Kudos for Colbor!

      Yeah, smartphone apps for lights are nice, especially when you have a whole bunch of lights working together.

    Hi! I know you participated in making a video for Alotech gear. It sounded like a great backpack, and the promo video was great! What ever happened to that and it’s founder, Thomas?

    • @JohnAldred
      @JohnAldred  2 года назад

      I've not tried the Alotech or done a video about it, I just made a post on DIYP about it when it launched. I'm not sure what's happening with them now. It looks like everybody who commented on their Kickstarter campaign cancelled their pledge, so it doesn't look promising. :(
      I did recently try the Cosyspeed Photohiker 44, though. That one just ran through Kickstarter and was successfully funded. It's the most comfortable hiking backpack for camera gear ever (because it actually has proper hiking backpack back support). Not great as a general day-to-day photography backpack (I still use my Lowepro ProTactic BP 450 AW II for that), but when you're going on an all-day hike or a camping trip and you need to carry a bunch of camera gear, it's amazing.

      While I was recording, I didn't even notice the fan coming on and off. Occasionally when I stopped talking I'd be like "Oh, the fan's on" and then wait for it to go off before speaking again, but in the actual recording, with a lav mic on my shirt, which was only about 1 metre from the light, it didn't pick it up at all when I was editing the video. I was pleasantly surprised. It's MUCH quieter than the fans in my Godox lights.

    Thank you for this review! I've been looking to redo the lights in my studio, and while these are slightly more expensive than the other 2 I was looking at (Neewer and GoDox?) you made a good point about this one being smaller. I'm currently using an old LED PANEL that is not as bright as I'd like, because I want to add more diffusion (maybe a round Chinese lantern globe thing). What do you think (and I couldn't find the softboxes on Amazon US)?

    • @JohnAldred
      @JohnAldred  2 года назад

      I'd avoid Neewer, mostly just because you never know what you're really getting with them. Neewer doesn't actually make anything of their own, they just rebrand other companies gear and then sell it under their own name. So, even if you buy multiple lights with Neewer written on them, you never really know who made them, how accurate they'll be or how closely they'll match each other in colour. Godox lights are mostly pretty awesome. I have a few of them that I like, but the FV200 fan is really loud, haha. The Godox ML60 is a fantastic option if you want really small and silent, but you'll need the S2 bracket to use Bowens mount modifiers with it. The ML60 also gives the option of AC or battery power, like the Colbor CL100 if you buy the NP-F adapter plate for it. Another good option is the Aputure Amaran 100D or 200D. The 100D is fairly small, but a little bit bigger than the Colbor CL100 and significantly larger than the ML60, but it's dead silent. I don't think I've heard the fan come on once with it yet.
      As far as the softbox I'm using, this is the US equivalent of it. It's sold by Adorama, but you can get it on Amazon - amzn.to/3CtlDQC

    Great video as always john and nice seeing you posting again.
    I tried to contact you john in the previous days but I couldn't find a way. I'm having hard times with the support settings in my snapmaker and I wanted to ask you if you can share your support setting with us and which slicer do you use. And if you use cura do you use the settings available in cura as they added the snapmaker in their latest update or do you use the settings that you have shared with us previously. I hope that you can help me as always
    And keep it up as we are always waiting for you to post more reviews and projects

    • @JohnAldred

      Hey Marwan. My support settings are the same as those I put in my Cura profiles for the SM2. The only thing they added to Cura was the machine build volume settings. Cura still only has generic PLA profiles (which is the same one for all printers). So, I still use my own.
