I would absolutely love to see your version of Anastasia's sailor dress! I am in love with bishop sleeved anything, really, and Anastasia movies were my childhood favourites. I just know you would make it so cute and pretty, like you did Sophie's dress (another lowkey dream project of mine).
@@Sewstine I'd love to see it too! I made my own a couple of years ago using a 1950s pattern, but I'm not entirely happy with it. I'm certain you'd do an amazing job and it'd be so helpful to see you recreate it so I could determine where I went wrong with mine.
A SAILOR DRESS HAS ALWAYS BEEN A DREAM PROJECT FOR ME SO THANK YOU CHRISTINE!! I’ve always been too nervous of failing because I’m still very much a novice, but seeing how gorgeous yours turned out just might make me take that fabric I’ve been saving and get started on a sailor dress of my own 😍🥰
My mother was an excellent seamstress and made most of my clothes growing up. This reminds me of a sailor dress she made for me as a little girl. I absolutely adore the way it turned out and you look fantastic wearing it❤️💙
My sister's early 1960s sailor dress was a heavy white (twill) fabric with a black flat trim (half inch woven braid). Unfortunately, we only have two bw snapshots of her wearing it. She remembered how pretty the dress looked but difficult to wear. Heavy and all white with a full crinoline petticoat underneath. Being 18 years apart in age, I never received any of her dresses as hand- me-downs. Sigh! I lacked her fashion sense... My college age clothes consisted of baggy cargo pants (pockets), buffalo plaid flannel shirts, and Gap sweatshirts. My daughters look gorgeous in any style... They love vintage, retro and sportswear. Style skipped me but they sometimes wear my tops. Lol 🎄 Happy holidays to you and your family 🎄
What a delight to witness the thought and careful sewing! I'm older (like really old! Lol) and sewed from patterns like this one. How much easier the designs are now. No Taylor's tacks, no side zippers, no strangely sewn pockets! The dress came out just beautifully! You did yourself proud. Thank you for such a detailed voyage!
I really like how you attached the sleeves. This is how I, Muse, prefer to do it because I feel like it offers more control than gathering. The outfit is super cute! It's good to hear that the dress is comfortable especially while theme parking!
Thank you Muse! I'm so glad I'm not the only one who finds gathered sleeves to be meh (for this amount of fullness - I confess for a fuller sleeve head, I prefer gathered)!! :D
Christine this was absolutely adorable. I live vicariously through you since you are blessed with the talent & finances to create all the beautiful dresses that you had always wanted as a child but didn't have....
I had a sailor dress that a seamstress made for me when I was 10. Once it didn’t fit anymore, I started dreaming about having one. That is 50 years ago. I think is time!
As usual, your dress is gorgeous! The addition of the Whale handbag and the hat complete the outfit for a Disney vacation. The usage of 2 different size trim tapes at the hem was brilliant.
As a amall child, I used to fantasize about my mother taking my siblings and I back with her to Korea wearing vintage sailor outfits. My mother never made them as I suggested. Learned long after she was gone, that it didn't happen because of my father's anti-uniform stance. Later on, I bought a navy one on Amazon and do have fun wearing it, though I often think of sewing my own version, using high end construction techniques. Maybe some day it will be made.... Right now, I have other projects that are higher priority for my curated capsule wardrobe, relying on accessories to dress the outfits up or down or change from business to goth to punk.
That Dress is just Goals. I've never seen square tailors chalk before and I Feel Do Much Smarter! I didn't know there was a sweating gene, I just figured I "sleep hot" 😁
Hand stitched zippers is such a game changer, wow! I am terrified of the zipper foot and so even though I've been sewing off and on for 10 years I've never put a zipper in...
YES a sailor dress!!! I like the Edwardian sailor swim suits but I LOVE sailor dresses and they are also my dream dress. I’m happy you showed how to sew the stripes on the collar, I once tried to sew them on a clean way but I failed miserably lol, so I’ve always wanted to see someone showing their process. The dress turned out so cute!!! ❤️ Edit: YES MAKE THE ANASTASIA ONE!!!
I LOVE sailor shirts and dresses. I was a teen in the 80s when it came through, again. This came out MAGNIFICENTLY!! Also, I love Sewing Rebelstine, who blatantly ignores and skips steps. You go, girl! The ribbon striping was PERFECT!
Your finishing is always so neat and precise, and you think things through in so much detail - I swear I learn new things every time you release a video even if it’s a simple project
If you are looking for a research rabbit hole to fall down, I can recommend Uniforms for the Merchant Marine. They are 'sailor suits', but the variety and occasional absurdity is delightful.
I was born in the 40s and still have a couple of simplicity patterns from dresses that my Aunts made for me. Your dress is quite lovely.. it looks a lot one I had as a girl. Thank you for sharing your video with us.
I could have watched you sew the trim on for all eternity! One day I will be able to sew trim on with such precision. That was so satisfying to watch! I love how the dress turned out! Great for a Disney trip! Thank you for sharing the making of this dress!
In the 40's my mother worked for WPA making children's clothing. She designed a sailor dress with a hat. There is a picture somewhere with my sister wearing it. It was a big deal in those days to get your picture taken. She was very proud.
I wanted to write a short comment, but I love so much about this video it keeps turning into a sonnet, so I’m just going to shorten it to a simple I love your content. I am eternally grateful for the day I subscribed.
Love this dress!!!! And look at you getting all medical and stuff in your sponsorship ad. LOL that was great!!!! Don't listen to the haters. You are an amazing woman!!! We all gotcher back!
This is SO great! That poplin gives such a great body to the dress. Also, not at all jealous about that Art Nouveau headboard. Nope, not even a little bit. (Narrator: Megan was in fact green with envy about that headboard!) I adore the whale bag too!
I love this sailor dress! The combination of thin and thick stripes really adds a nice little detail. So satisfying to see the pockets and zipper work perfectly, too.
Adorable! Thank you for this video. I like how you showed all the nitty gritty details and sewing steps. Really helpful for a low intermediate sewer like me. You always produce good videos and amazing projects.
Please share how you find the time and strength to do all these projects😭 I'm a stay at home mom now and I find myself struggling to enjoy my little hobbies. It's either nap when he naps or do something and the nap wins most of the time. You're so inspiring to watch💗 thank you for the content
Thank you! Honestly - I’m so exhausted after coming home and I’m pretty much a napaholic too. My secret is that no matter how tired I am, I try to do about 30 minutes to an hour every day. I actually force myself so I keep up the habit. And on days when I have off and malcolm is at daycare, I spend the whole day doing things that take the most emotional energy like fitting or cutting out that expensive fabric. And it’s ok to cut yourself a break here or there. I hope that helps! It also helps that I have a very supportive husband - he is a full time parent - the way you are for your family - and he is always so encouraging. While I work 24 hours at a time, he is at home with Malcolm or sends Malcolm to daycare- and when I am home, I try to spend Malcolm’s every waking moment with him. But when he’s at daycare or sleeping - that time is mine!
I'M SMILING. Your sail into the past with your creation of the little sailor dress is so cute. I agree that there are more sailor dresses in your future. For research into a variation that is more costume-like, I suggest 1960's movies with Doris day or Sandra Dee. The look would be with a more fitted waist and a fuller gathered shirt. The other option would be a longer, lower waisted version on a straight sheath with a box pleated skirt set 5 inches or so below the waistline. A cap sleeve would complete the vertical line, but an elbow length sleeve would work. The fabric needs to take a sharp pressed in pleat.
Such a well done production! Process details, close ups, highlights, non repetitive background music, real construction knowledge, and well narrated without unnecessary chatter. Loved the fabric choice. New subscriber!
LOVE LOVE LOVE this! Your guest room is amazing too!!! But I will never buy from Mood after they cost a client of mine (non-profit at that) several thousand dollars after sending the wrong silk (plain instead of shot, the material they sent did not match the sample swatch they had sent previously). They refused to refund or replace even though they admitted their mistake.
Saw this video randomly on my feed and was not disappointed! I love the stripes you added and how wearable the dress is for daily living, you got a new subscriber!
That headboard was made for you! I’m so happy your found it. This pattern is adorable. Love watching your videos! I am not a sewer but I love historical dress. I enjoy how you blend modern and historic sewing!
Bahaahaahaa, "Since I wanted to try to follow the instructions as much as I felt like it..." And thanks for showing a hand stitched zipper, I hand sew a lot (in fact I just finished your Kefta pattern but in 4 layers so it can be a winter coat for a Canadian winter, all by hand) because most of the time my sewing machines are what cause me the most stress in a sewing project.
@@Sewstine I started with magenta wool-poly blend and dyed it with Rit Indigo after doing some little swatches in the colours of dye I had on hand) so the wool took the dye and the polyester didn't so it's got this neat mottled purple thing going on for the exterior, then it's interlined with a layer of cotton twill as a windbreak(Ikea curtains) and wool (old horse blanket) and lined with blue bunny print flannel (with a satin pillowcase to line the sleeves cause the flannel had too much friction). Thanks to your pattern (and a couple zoom calls with a friend for fitting because I am a brick with boobs) I now have a princess seam bodice block that fits me just right and I feel kind of invincible!!! :D Endless possibilities!!!

Her cousin seems to be very similar in size, perhaps a smidge taller, so the fitting of the clothing would be easier. Can't WAIT to see the waistcoat with the dogs on it ! 😍
What a dream nautical dress 😍⚓👗 absolutely gorgeous! and another wonderful video as always. Thank you so much for sharing! Sitting down with a cup of tea and watching you make beautiful things is such a treat and a joy. ❤️
Everyday dresses were not flatlined/underlined in the 50s. Underlining was usually reserved for loosely woven wools and stage costumes. The flare in the skirt came from a ruffled half slip of many layers of nylon net, what we called a can-can slip. You can see these in old musical movies when girls dance and spin around. Debbie Reynolds was often seen in these when she was younger. You can also spot them at the prom in Back to the Future. They might be white or in vivid colors, just for fun. My sister had one with 5 layers, each a different shade of bright pastel with a rolled hem. I had a lot of fun playing with that petticoat. Poplin is an excellent choice for this dress. The narrow trim used for these was middy braid, sold in small packets like bias or hem tape in red, white or navy blue. In the 50s and early 60s, kids delighted in having a shirt, blouse or dress in the sailor style. It really sparked our little imaginations, especially in the city, where sailboats were the province of the rich and not for the likes of us. Just one garment in our circle of friends would set us all dreaming.
I was convinced I couldn't sew a zip in because I only hand sew not machine sew, and I had only seen a zip being added using a machine. It was watching your videos that made me realise it could be done by hand sewing and would probably be easier that way
Christine!! This is super cute!! Honestly I can't stand how adorable this dress is. Love every single trim decision you made. And the faux buttons!! Like this couldn't be more spot on if you tried. I'm freaking obsessed! And a future Anastasia one?!?!?! YES YES YES!! This may be the gateway costume to finally making the Sailor Mars costume that I've been dreamed about since I was a kid. Thank you for sharing all your hard work, incredible job, seriously
@@Sewstine Red dress and buttons, white trim, purple bow. Yes! SOLD! Might change the tones slightly, so they're more jeweled toned than bright but this could be super fun. Okay, that's it. it's going on my project brainstorming list!
So pretty! Love it ❤️ Also, on a side note, I love how no matter what I always get embroidery ads on your videos, for machines and digitizing tutorials and the like ❤️
I always admire your projects, but never feel I would ever be “motivated” enough to make them myself (I always admire your work regardless) but this... I NEED. Thank you for sharing!! (Now I need like five color ways lol)
Gorgeous!!!! The stitching to know where to lay the ribbon was super clever!! Definitely a sewing tip I’m gonna hold on to! Why do the puppers always gotta potty while you’re doing the video shoot? Lol! Lastly I’m so jealous of that bed frame!!!!!
This looks amazing !!! Your sewing is always so precise and I envy how neat everything looks when you do it (I tell myself at least a part of it is video magic to make myself feel better). All in all, very cute !
The dress turned out amazing! I hope you had a great time in the park wearing the dress with your family! Your gradient/ombre nails looked wonderful as well.
Pattern anarchistic! I would love to have the skill level that Christine has that enables her to make all of these changes and decisions on the fly! As always, beautiful work!
It’s so interesting to me that they taught you to do pockets the way that they did! I have not mastered the skill of putting a zipper and pocket on a side seam, in any fashion, but especially with an invisible zipper! And I know a lot of what I saw these days involves putting the pocket halves onto the dress panels and then sewing the seam and the pockets in the same go. But I remembered being taught the way that these directions showed to do it and I kept wondering if that was just me miss remembering things. I’m 52 (53 next month!) but I’m not THAT old that I shouldn’t be remembering things. Lol It’s likely that I was taught to sew (40 years ago) during a phase when the pocket insertions were done this way.
thank you for still making content for us, i loved the video - and the dress is SOOO cute! it really checks all boxes! i dare all of you, who can make a stupid comment about this gorgeous video/dress/content-maker?!? nobody, that's who!
@@Sewstine oh come on, what is wrong with people?!? i just don't get their problem! you're a darling, and apparently they just hate life and want everyone else to be miserable, too 🙄🙄
OHMYGOD I *literally* just went to my parents house and remembered my graduation dress was a black and white vintage sailor dress!! I dug it up to bring back home with me so I can try to use it as reference to make one just like it in my current size!! :D
I never realized how cute this kind of dress looks on a petite grownup! As a child, I did not particularly like sailor costumes, but now, as a senior, I'm wondering if I could get away with it. Because I'm a bit taller and heavier, maybe something with a drop waist would work! Thanks for opening my eyes.
It’s so cute! I love that you pick the parts of the pattern you want to follow and just chuck the rest. 😂 It never fails that your final product is outstanding, though! I’m relatively new to the sewing world as a whole…pattern drafting, modifying, etc. I knew enough to follow basic patterns. I have a genuine question: Are some machines designed to be able to sew over pins? So many people are adamant to the point of zealotry that you should NEVER sew over pins, but I’ve seen a bunch of folks with high end, or industrial machines sew over them with no problem. I’m just confused. Any help would be deeply appreciated.
Love it! I have seen some darling military inspired outfits, lately. One of the ladies in my sewing group made a Chanel style style jacket in a softer shade of Army green with darker slacks and coordinated sneakers. It was for his promotion ceremony and the pic is an obvious keepsake. My mom would have looked great in this when Dad re-enlisted or retired from the Navy.
Agree that sailor dresses/blouses are gorgeous! 😄😆 I had a sailor uniform when I was in the kindergarten, and I wasn't too jazzed about it then 😆😂, but now the day that my closet get considerably more vintage, rest assured that I'd have something with a sailor collar 😆 (...and I'd put a reference to my favorite admiral(s) to it somehow!)
So cute. It also reminds me of a similar girl's trouser suit I saw in a play once, probably in a similar fabric but definitely in a similar color. The fit was impeccable and the actress looked amazing in it!

hahaha! You're right! She's 9 inches taller than me but the same size! Good eye! And thank you!
honestly if everything in the whole world crumbles around us, I fully anticipate christine to rise and lead the new world order
What a dream nautical dress 😍⚓👗 absolutely gorgeous! and another wonderful video as always. Thank you so much for sharing! Sitting down with a cup of tea and watching you make beautiful things is such a treat and a joy. ❤️
I had 2 sailor dresses as a child, I loved them so much. They were 100% cotton poplin, and were a lot of work to iron.
Super adorable dress on you . Love how the dress sewed up .....😇
YES PLEASE MORE SAILOR DRESSES!! I think the white one would really suit you!
Would love to see the Anastasia variant
It was watching your videos that made me realise it could be done by hand sewing and would probably be easier that way
My grandma made me the cutest sailor dress when I was about six. And I was so sad when it didn’t fit anymore 😭 I think I need one…
I always had sailor dresses as a little girl. I loved them.
Smartest way of putting on trim (on the collar) that I ever saw. Love the dress!
Thank youuu!!! Oh goodness - it would look SO GOOD In sailor Mars colors!!
@@Sewstine Red dress and buttons, white trim, purple bow. Yes! SOLD! Might change the tones slightly, so they're more jeweled toned than bright but this could be super fun. Okay, that's it. it's going on my project brainstorming list!
So pretty! Love it ❤️
Also, on a side note, I love how no matter what I always get embroidery ads on your videos, for machines and digitizing tutorials and the like ❤️
I always admire your projects, but never feel I would ever be “motivated” enough to make them myself (I always admire your work regardless) but this...
Yesssss please make Anastasia’s dream sequence dress! Love the colors and shapes in that dress. You would do it so well
This looks amazing !!!
Lol
It’s likely that I was taught to sew (40 years ago) during a phase when the pocket insertions were done this way.
OMG!!! I love that you were able to go to Disney in your dress! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
thank you for still making content for us, i loved the video - and the dress is SOOO cute! it really checks all boxes!
i dare all of you, who can make a stupid comment about this gorgeous video/dress/content-maker?!? nobody, that's who!
Thank you!!! I so appreciate that!
You always made me want to make a LOT of stuff for my wardrobe.. aaagh it's so cute!
So cute and perfect Disney dress!
Aside from how cute the dress is, I love that blue nail polish
Oh wow! The dress turned out beautifully. You are an amazing seamstress.
It looks wonderful! I would love to make Anastasia’s sailor dress, I’ve always thought it looks so pretty.
I love that you stay true to you unique style. The dress turned out brilliant. I want to make a sailor dress for my doll
yes, pls do Anya's dress! all her movie dresses are a dream :]
So cute! Love the white trim around the color, it's SO crisp!
I'd LOVE to see that sailor dress with the bishop sleeves! Partly just because I adore bishop sleeves
I think theoretically I’m not supposed to, and I do break needles every now and then by doing it. But you can try with your machine and see!
@@Sewstine Thank you! ❤️
Mood Fabrics reminds me of ‘Project Runway’. Is Tim Gunn timing us? 😂
Very nice! Great pocketbook as well. Love your videos. They are full of information, inspiration and great details.
I saw the title and I had to be here. I’m a big fan of Nautical inspired Fashion.
This is so beautiful!!! I also have a love for sailor dresses, and this one is fabulous!
I love this dress. You did a great job. When I was a little girl, I had sailor dresses. They were popular then.
AHHHH I love this! Also the detail on your nails while you were hand sewing that one part? SO PRETTY!
Yes, I am not "into" nails, but I also noticed her nail polish. Both the red & blue were gorgeous!
Agree that sailor dresses/blouses are gorgeous! 😄😆
I had a sailor uniform when I was in the kindergarten, and I wasn't too jazzed about it then 😆😂, but now the day that my closet get considerably more vintage, rest assured that I'd have something with a sailor collar 😆 (...and I'd put a reference to my favorite admiral(s) to it somehow!)
That headboard!!!! OMG
Love, love the sailor look! Nancy
I loved how this came out.
Thank you so much!!
Don’t. Zero customer service. The whole thing was a nightmare start to finish.
So cute. It also reminds me of a similar girl's trouser suit I saw in a play once, probably in a similar fabric but definitely in a similar color. The fit was impeccable and the actress looked amazing in it!
