Ed did so many little tasty rythmic things in his time w Skynyrd that most people and some guitarists over look or just dont get but the more you dig into his work the more little treasures you find in his playing.
You hear Whiskey and you think wells thats easy enough but you soon realize how complex it is and you gotta weave multiple parts into one cohesive line to even get the vibe in Eds ballpark ....truely a brilliant player!!
"A lot more going on than you think." That is the best way to describe Ed King's musicianship and compositional style. He was one of those guys who is SO g-dd-mn smart he makes sure you never quite know just how smart he is.

Whiskey Rock a Roller , On the Hunt, Poison Whiskey, Down South Jukin and I Know a Little are probably my top 5 Skynyrd songs. But really, there isn't a Skynyrd song that I don't enjoy listening to. I forget that The Needle and the Spoon is right up there amongst my favs!
I must say, this is the first time I have seen the back-bone of the song played spot-on... The finger picking in all the pre-chorus, and bridge sections really show the importance of the rhythm playing on this song... the lead and solo parts seem so simple compared to the rest of the songs dynamic... Just Awesome!!!

Just got to tell you bro. Almost in tears. I was 17 when this came out. I wanted to play guitar so bad. I’m so glad I knew who these guys were. It’s really crazy. I learned the blues from Skynard. Now my family from Mississippi. Jackson,Belzoni. I was there in Feb. Now my dad when I was a kid. Listen to Wolf,Bo, Muddy, John Lee. And I said to him. Dad that’s country blues. Boy did I get a rude awakening. Where Skynard got there blues from. I’m 67 now. And I just love your channel. Thank you for bringing the music of my youth too today.

They way Allen, Gary and Ed worked together was so complimentary to each other.
I think this song is a prime example of that.
Nobody over shadowed anyone else, everyone had room to breathe and each of the parts fit together perfectly to form the whole.
Ed, kinda being "the outsider" from California always kinda tried to stay out of Allen and Gary's way but always somehow managed to be "the cherry on top" for all the music he was a part of with them.
He always seemed to know exactly what to play.
Their first 3 albums with Ed will always be the most special for me and the greatest example of how wonderfully 3 guitars can work together.
@asc: Love the comment buddy - word for word, I coulda wrote myself. RIP to all three of those now. And SG too course, but for me, "Skynyrd" will always be the first 3 LPs. What came after unforgettable too tho "not quite the same. Kinda like the 2nd marriage. ;-)

👍 awesome tutorial (standing ovation!!!)you just resolved many mysterious gnarly gnarts / guitar parts I have been wondering about since the 70s ( I used to listen to my brothers vinyl with headphones) As a self-taught guitarist I've always known Allman Bros. and Skynyrd melodically weaved layers of tasty guitar licks, pinch harmonics fills etc I never knew who/ how these nuances were achieved. Never got to witness the original line up with RVZ but lucky enuf to see LS tribute 1987 and 4 other shows up to date, thank you for shedding a little light ,RIP Ed King long live rock 🤘⚡🎸👣🐊✌️🐾
Rocked it. I play it a little different but with only one guitar in the band you have to decide which part you want in there. So I play the big part and forget about the little stuff. By the time you get the voice in there it's full enough. Thanks Steve for another GREAT! You've taught me a TON!
I been playing for a very long time. Not that great. But can play. Want to give all you pickers a word of advice. I started learning songs I lined and chords. And UNTILL I started learning scales. Did my guitar playing improved. Now I can work a chord and play the lead scale to that chord. I’m just scratching the surface. But I really wish I would have worked on scales. As much as I worked on chords. Cause the cord is just a position in the scale. And key. Thank you for teaching me one of the best American Southern Rock Band Ever.

Yes I know Artemis plays with them. I would pass out if I met him. Been listening to him since I was young. APB is the real Lynyrd Skynyrd band NOW. The Lynyrd Skynyrd band now is just a tribute band!! There is no Lynyrd Skynyrd without Ronnie Van Zant. You couldn’t pay me to go see them but I would go see APB In a heartbeat.

Hey Scott what you do with these songs and how you break it down is amazing and I just got me excited to be playing again it's great for someone who is basically stuck or what do they call it plateaued so I can play I just do not see the whole fretboard the light bulb hasn't popped for me yet but I'm close you sir are an amazing guitar player and the comments you made about that Gibson which is an insane guitar shows shows what an amazing person you are I was brought up the same way I'm not as good of a guitar player as you probably not as good of a person either but if you put in the work you can be you remind me of that thank you it's an honor to meet you oh by the way I got a request roll Gypsy roll I bet you it's one of your favorites LOL

This song is really typical of the cool thing Skynyrd would do in how they would hide the changes within riffs. Gimme Three Steps does it as well in how they play a riff through the 2 chord. They were way more nuanced than they ever got credit for.
Very good analysis , they sounded so good , but why ? This comment and the lesson is a great breakdown of the Skynyrd sound .

I can’t remember if I’ve commented before, but this breakdown is amazing, and incredibly helpful. We gotta adapt this for two guitars, so there’s some picking and choosing going on, plus the lead is already doing something of a hybrid of two parts on the bridge, so knowing what all three guitars do in the original is extremely helpful when trying to find a place to slot in.

My roots are froma Belzoni Miss. only been there twice. 10 years old. And last February. I grew up in Western Pa. Little town outside of Pittsburgh. And just fell in love with this HONKY TONK FOOT STOMPING GOOD FUCKING TIME BAND. WHEN I HEAR THEM. ITS THE HONKY TONK BLUES JUKE JOINT GOSPEL.
Good !! Gives me hope for the future . This is ridiculously insane music. It does have more funky American , shit kickin' ass slappin ' . big ole' Bass catchin' , Motorbike rippin' soul than any other band ever did muster !

Hi, very nice song with that very Blueish sound from that particular guitar. Yeah, I like this type of song which would be compatible for party. As I am coming back to music side only the last 2 years, I can say I am a beginner in Blues music and I just know only limited number songs fron SRV, Jerry Garcia,Eric clapton. I will try to dig down in it. Usually it takes some time to have real groove of the music first in my brain and then work out. Also, for me, I have to sing , play solo part all alone .

Had a blast learning the parts you were doing here and playing along. I think I will go a little deeper and learn the lead parts. I had told my brother what tune I was learning today and he went ahead and learned the Artimas' part. What we do most of the time is the recorded versions, because I moved to SC and they are still in VA. So when we get together it's actually pretty tight straight way. Thanks Scott! I'm really pressed for time and it's really hard for me to have to work up songs from scratch by ear. Thanks to videos I can have a tune tight in a couple of evenings. Quicker than that if my other brother will take a solo or two.

Hey Scott. Did you know that even though BP was credited as a writer of this songs piano parts, Al Kooper brought in David Foster to record the piano track for this song on the studio version. Ed has made the comment many times that this album was incomplete. Sounds just fine to me. 👍🏻👍🏻
Yes, Ed told me the same thing. He didn’t like this album. He said Second Helping was their masterpiece. As I told him, Second Helping was surely a masterpiece, but I love them all.

It's a "Standard." In Rock and Roll bars, you're gonna be expected to know if, like "Johnny B Goode" or "Gimme 3 Steps." Beatles and Zeppelin are baby steps now.

I got 3 Skynyrd song, "deep dive" YT creators. This channel of course, Ryan Williams' stuff, and the first who I found, unfortunately he DEL'd all his breakdowns before YT did for him (too much 'rebel" imagery on his studio (well bedroom ;-) walls), but MAN but he did love AC as we all do.
Anyways, if could wave a magic wand and have another LS band put together you three guys would replace AC GR & EK and i KNOW it would sound every bit as sweet b/c all 3 of you guys know all 3 of those guys' parts! and note for note too which blows me away. I only wish AC GR & EK could sit around together and enjoy watching you guys doing their thing.

It's funny that a Dude from California joined Skynyrd and played the swampiest southern licks of all Skynyrd songs. Skynyrd lost a big part of their sound when Ed left.
It is true that Ed's deep understanding of song structuring and writing created the most incredible sounds as he knew to play in the pockets between Gary & Allen verses just doubling what they played. He did seem to be a pioneer of pinch harmonics and he really understood the orchestral way to complete a band. They became a bit dry until Steve joined in 76' However Steve was already loaded with his sounds whereas Ed had to adapt . Ed was the most technically advanced guitarist they had. Steve may have had the most natural talent . The intrumental crescendo in the middle of this song is possibly the most hair raising thing Skynyrd ever did. When they played it live it seemed to put people in a trance . No other band has ever done anything like it .
