  • The Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major, K. 219, was written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1775, premiering during the holiday season that year in Salzburg. It follows the typical fast-slow-fast musical structure. Mozart composed the majority of his concertos for string instruments from 1773 to 1779, but it is unknown for whom, or for what occasion, he wrote them. Similarly, the dating of these works is unclear. Analysis of the handwriting, papers and watermarks has proved that all five violin concertos were re-dated several times. The year of composition of the fifth concerto "1775" was scratched out and replaced by "1780", and later changed again to "1775". Mozart would not use the key of A major for a concerto again until the Piano Concerto K. 414. The autograph score is preserved in the Library of Congress, Washington D.C. The concerto is scored for two oboes, two horns and strings.
    The movements are as follows:
    1. Allegro Aperto - Adagio - Allegro Aperto
    2. Adagio
and 3. Rondo - Tempo di Minuetto.
The aperto marking on the first movement is a rare marking in Mozart's instrumental music, but appears much more frequently in his operatic music. It implies that the piece should be played in a broader, more majestic way than might be indicated simply by allegro. The first movement opens with the orchestra playing the main theme, a typical Mozartian tune. The solo violin comes in with a short but sweet dolce adagio passage in A Major with a simple accompaniment in the orchestra. (This is the only instance in Mozart's concerto repertoire in which an adagio interlude of this sort occurs at the first soloist entry of the concerto.) It then transitions back to the main theme with the solo violin playing a different melody on top of the orchestra. The first movement is 10-11 minutes long.
The rondo finale's main theme is a typical Mozartean theme, but the contrasting sections feature loud passages of Turkish music that have caused some to call this the "Turkish Concerto".
Mozart later composed the Adagio for violin and orchestra, K. 261 as a substitute slow movement for this concerto.
The whole piece is about 28 minutes long.

Mozart's violin concertos are mysterious works. Why did he only compose 5 and not return to this form again? If it was anyone but Mozart I would find it hard to believe that all were composed within 9 months of one year of life, his 19th. Yet, they all show an amazing progression of skill and technique that would take anyone else many years to achieve. Mozart made great use of violins in other forms and with even more virtuosic (correct english word?) beauty, but these are 5 jewels of priceless value. Still a teen-ager when he wrote them!

I have read that he was angling for a job at the French Court of Louis XVI and they had a real fondness for the Violin. As a Violinist, I have always thought that they were the first of the truly great concerti that utilized all the glries of the instruments of Stradivari, Guarneri del Jesu, and even a bit later, and contemporary with Mozart himself, Bergonzi, Guadagnini, and such other Italian lumiaries of the King of Instruments.

The great composer Mr. Joseph Haydn said of W.A. Mozart that humanity would never again hear a talent like his.
I do not want to offend anyone, or belittle the talent of any composer, this is not my intention.
But every time I hear Mozart melodies like this Violin Concerto No. 3 in G, K. 216, I think Mr. Haydn fell short, very short.
I sincerely believe that the world will never hear a talent like Mozart's again in the next 10,000 years.
W.A.Mozart, lives and will live forever.
Greetings to all lovers of classical music.

I would listen to it till the end of the world....."The rondo Finale is based on a Minuet theme which recurs several times.
In the middle of the movement the meter changes from 3/4 to 2/4 and a
section of "Turkish music" is played. This is characterised by the shift
to A minor (from the original A major), and by the use of grotesque
elements, such as unison chromatic crescendos, repetition of very short
musical elements and col legno playing in the cellos and double basses. This section gave the concerto the nickname "The Turkish Concerto". The famous Rondo alla Turca from Mozart's piano sonata in A major features the same key and similar elements." Wikipedia

68 is a sad number. That's how many people have condemned themselves to a world of darkness, a world without musical joy. What sane person could give a thumbs-down to ANYTHING Mozart? Such people have covered their ears so not to hear the voice of God singing to them. Closed their eyes so not to see the sunlight. Where Mozart leads, there are some that lack the understanding to follow.
