Watch the BBC first on iPlayer 👉 bbc.in/iPlayer-Home Birds of paradise are one of David Attenborough's lifelong passions. He was the first to film many of their beautiful and often bizarre displays, and over his lifetime he has tracked them all over the jungles of New Guinea. In this very personal film, he uncovers the remarkable story of how these 'birds from paradise' have captivated explorers, naturalists, artists, film-makers and even royalty. He explores the myths surrounding their discovery 500 years ago, the latest extraordinary behaviour captured on camera and reveals the scientific truth behind their beauty: the evolution of their spectacular appearance has in fact been driven by sex.
'For me birds of paradise are the most romantic and glamorous birds in the world. And this is a film I have wanted to make for 40 years.' - Sir David Attenborough.
David Attenborough is repeatedly upstaged by an excited Greater Bird of Paradise.

I have a book that David Attenborough wrote when he was in his twenties, about his voyage to New Guinea and the Komodo Islands. Naturally, the Birds of Paradise were the stars of the show, but he also detailed the head dresses that the New Guinea Tribesmen would make out of their feathers, how they hunted them (hunting techniques) and how they almost hunted some species to extinction! These tribesmen would frequently make a head dress using the feathers of dozens of birds, then discard it after only few or even just one ceremonial use!
I am so glad that the New Guinea Tribesmen did not hunt these amazing birds to extinction, and that, after all these years, David Attenborough is still telling the World about them
    P. S. His documentation of the life of the Komodo Dragons was also a riveting read, about how they would lay in wait for their prey, then spring out from the undergrowth, bite it, then follow it for days until the unfortunate beast collapsed from Septic Shock.
    Very interesting.
If you can find this book, I'd highly recommend it.
