When I was growing up Oma always had a big pot of soup on the wood stove AT ALL TIMES. Since they only had a couple pigs and couldnt get to the compost bins she would just put certain leftover veggies and cuts of meat right into the pot. Added water when needed or spices if called for. But it made it so if you came in from out side were cold and little hungry you could have a small bowl of warm soup. She said it was very common in Germany to have a big pot hanging in the fire place in the kitchen off to the side. She said it was also given to visitors as hospitality for coming by. A warm bowl of soup and a hunck of bread. SO I now have a crock pot on my counter of the same. We ALWAYS have soup on. Best part the soup NEVER is the same from day to day.

  • @Horse237

Purple cabbage is healthier for us as darker vegetables have many more phytochemicals.
If you set the temperature at 118 degrees, you will let the natural enzymes survive dehydration.
You have a very practical channel.

Thank you for sharing you knowledge with us. Greatly appreciate that you took the time school me in all your videos. Learned a lot since I've been watching you. I grew up learning the old school ways of life ( Newfoundland, Canada) which I'm very greatful for. I was taught to bottle game meat and preserves but never dehydration ( only salted sun dried cod and squid), but as for vegetables they were stored in a
Root cellar throughout the winter months. This way is more convenient and easily stored on my pantry shelves. So keep up the awesome videos please. Really enjoy and watching them. Thank you

Been doing this for years ! have a great rest of the week n weekend Juanita Sparkes !!!

I do t think I'm ever going to get finished. Some will go for hand fried pies and I'm doing some for the kids with cinnamon and sugar. Hopefully one more dehydrated full and the will be done. Wow what a great idea. I'm almost out of canning jars. However, dehydrating cabbage is a great idea for food preparation that isn't going to take a lot of time, space, and dwindling canning jars. I still have to make frozen coleslaw as we're out, We've been canning and dehydrating different varieties of peppers for us and our son's family. However, I am so happy that you reminded me that you can really expand your food preservation by dehydrating the veggies and fruit you may have. I'm curious as to whether the apples you canned this week were off of your little miracle tree? I'm excited for you that that little apple tree had the will to live and produce. Your apples were beautiful. We too love soup in the winter as it is so comforting when it's cold. Crock pot soup is wonderful because all you do is put the ingredients in and let it go. Then you have time to do whatever else needs to be done. Great video thank you for sharing.

You should consider putting a silica pack in your jar just in case there is any moisture at all.
AND then pull a vacuum on the canning jar to remove all the air. It should last for at least 10 years that way.

I’m in the process right now of dehydrating one cabbage on my new NESCO…one cabbage on 4 trays, and it has been on since yesterday and it’s still not all done and my pieces were smaller than yours!!! Most of the day yesterday it was at 135°. Late afternoon I turned it down to 115° because someone said that 135° would eventually warp my trays. I went to bed at 2:00am and turned it down to 90°. Got up at 5:00am and turned it back up to 135° because someone else said a new NESCO wouldn’t warp. It’s been on all day at 135° and some of it is still not done. 5:58pm…SIGH!! 🥴 And, it’s shriveled down sooooo small I bet it won’t even fill a pint jar.

What a odd comment! DO YOU REALLY THINK SHE WAS CALLING HER FAMILY PIGS? No, she was literally talking about giving kitchen scraps to the pigs that go pink oink!

WOW! This is beautiful! I don't mean to bury anyone with my questions (I have so many, even after being glued to those videos and making notes). I would like too know how would one know, how much liquid to add to (let's say) a handful of dried cabbage to make it as a side dish (with mashed potatoes for example) ?
Any advice would be gratefully appreciated. Thank you :-)

I usually just put however much I want into a bowl and cover it with boiling water and once it's hydrated for the excess water off
