  • After you've been skating transition for a while, starting every run with a drop in can start to get a little old, so now it's time to spice things up with this intermediate mini ramp trick: The Roll In.
    Similar to rolling off of a curb, you're going to be picking up your front wheels and nudging your back wheels for a little bit, sending them into the air before you drop down and land on the inside of the ramp.
    For a bunch of close-up and slow motion footage as well as endless amounts of tips and advice on this intermediate trick, you're going to want to watch this video and then go out and start nailing roll-ins!

    What are the major things that can go wrong doing this? Obviously hit the coping and falling face first into the transition, but have you experienced any other problems?

    • @NeverStopImprovingSB
      @NeverStopImprovingSB  6 лет назад +52

      Excellent question!
      So the biggest concern in my opinion is, if you try doing this before you're ready, and you somehow get your FRONT wheels stuck before they go over the coping, you're probably in for a pretty bad day (easy way around this, make sure you've done the practice steps!). If your back wheels get stuck, it's just like bailing out of any other trick, you just take your back foot off first and walk down the ramp (or possibly drop and roll), but it's really not something to be too concerned about.
      The second area where you can have problems is once you land on the inside of the quarter pipe. The first time you do it, since you don't know how fast the ramp is going to accelerate you, you might lean to far forward or back (hint: it's going to feel about 90% the same as the flat ramp, with just SLIGHTLY more acceleration). Without question, leaning too far back is more dangerous here, so my advice would be to err on the side of leaning a little too far forward and if it really is too much (it probably won't be), you might fall, but a fall like that shouldn't be too bad since you already absorbed most of your momentum when you landed with your feet on the board.
      Other than that, a couple of times I've rotated frontside a little too much and ended up doing a powerslide type thing at the bottom of the ramp, but falling that way isn't too serious either.
      This is all assuming that you're trying this out on a fairly low ramp, by the way....don't go over 4 feet on your first attempt at it!
      P.S. So jealous of your pic w/ Steve Cabellero!

    Hi Justin and thanx for this terrific video. Just to be sure (or to be rectified): one should *first* give its back wheels a nudge (pushing the tail?) and *second* weight them off, right? Because you start with the latter statement, *then* the former (~ 1:15). Thanks a lot for your time

    I mangled myself trying to roll in at my local park 4 years ago, Its real easy to get injured if your not paying attention to your speed.
    I find it easier rolling in FS rather than BS. I find the challenge with BS roll-ins is that my back truck seems to grind on the coping making it harder to control the direction when entering the ramp, so who ever is out there reading this be sure to bonk your wheels off that coping like Justin explains earlier in the video.

    • @NeverStopImprovingSB

    What do you mean by giving the back wheels "a good nudge" as they hit the coping? How similar or different is this to dropping in? Should you slam down your front wheels in a similar way for example?

    • @NeverStopImprovingSB
      @NeverStopImprovingSB  3 года назад +1

      The nudge is mostly about forcing your back wheels over the coping by using your back foot to push the wheels *through* that part of the ramp, essentially trying to make sure the back wheels don't get stuck there.
      And yes, it has similarities to dropping in, but I wouldn't think of slamming just your front wheels down on this one. Instead, you're going to want to match the angle of the ramp with your board and make sure your body is leaning forward just enough to prevent the board from slipping out from under you, then slam all four wheels down onto the inside of the ramp all at the same time.

    This may be a dumb question, but when you say "nudge" do you mean you push down your back foot a little as if it's a mini pop? Or do you mean I take the weight off of the back foot and pull the board forward a little with the front foot?

      I'd be happy to help you learn how to skateboard! It's seriously the most fun sport IMO.
      I wouldn't start with this trick though ^.^ haha it's a little dangerous.
      Here's a video on the basics: ruclips.net/video/gY451V86kGQ/видео.html

    I’ve NEVER seen a sidewalk with coping on it like the one you suggest

    • @NeverStopImprovingSB
      @NeverStopImprovingSB  4 года назад

      Your local sidewalks are too pristine! haha maybe you could improvise, add a stick or something small at the edge to try to roll over with just your back wheels.

      The motion to keep your front wheels up isn't quite that intense. More like a manual than an ollie.

    so do you de weight or go light on your back foot? (mouse at 4.27? anyone else see that?)

    • @NeverStopImprovingSB
      @NeverStopImprovingSB  6 лет назад

      As far as how much weight you're putting on your back foot, you don't really have the opportunity to adjust it, since you have to put just enough weight on it to pick up the front wheels but without scraping your tail on the ground.
      However, when your back wheels hit the coping, you do want to bend your knees to momentarily take some of the weight off of both feet, so that the back wheels can easily bounce over the coping, so to answer your question, you will try to go a little light.
      Where's this mouse you're talking about? haha, the video is only 4:26 long
      Maybe you meant that little roly-poly bug @ 1:52?
