Explanation and demo on how to prepare substrate mix for terrariums
Components for substrate (soil) mix:
(with amazon buying links)
1)Coco peat (2 parts) - helps to retain moisture and keeps the soil loose and airy too. Usually comes in blocks which can be soaked in water to disintegrate into a soil like texture.

2)Dried moss (1 part) - has great water and nutrients retention properties
amzn.to/37iCPJW
3)Pine bark (1 part) - helps with drainage and aeration

4)Sand or ground gravel (1 part) - good drainage and aeration properties. Also improves soil texture.

Thank you three years later and its still useful.
Nice, thank you for posting the recipe, appreciate it! I'm new to this and anxious to get started, but need to get knowledge and tools first. I'm watching all your videos and hope you instruct how to collect and store moss. Thanks you.
Thanks, i have video on moss propagation. You could watch it to get some ideas.
Thank you so much, your video are so helpful and easy to make such a nice way to communicate with nature, no fancy packets and expensive things are needed just some time in nature ... To create the nature with nature... Keep doing.. this Noble work
Thank you

I'm new to hobby and went and bought sphagnum moss, but its miracle grow sphagnum peat moss. Is that any good?
@@supremeleaderarmy9164 should work. Give it a try
Hello..your videos are so aesthetically appealing. It got me interested into making a terrarium for myself.
I have watched a few of your videos.
I had a query. Is it mandatory to use moss?
I have cocopeat ,and can manage sand too,but is there any substitute for moss?
Also the plants you have named are difficult to source in Kolkata. More so,given the current situation. Is there any easily available plant that can be set up in a terrarium?. I am into gardening so I do have basic garden plants.
I am stuck even before I can begin. Any leads would be really helpful. 😊
Thank you.
Thanks. Moss is not mandatory. You could use extreme tropical plants like pothos, ficus pumila, syngonium, ferns etc.
@@TheUrbanNemophilist Thank you.
Will pothos be alright to use in a closed terrarium?
Whimsy Crafter yes. Use a small one. Maintenance will be needed once the plant grows.
@@TheUrbanNemophilist thank you😊
can i use live sphagnum moss instead in the substrate, (i have it ready in hand) or stick with something dryer? replace with dry spg. moss or any dry moss?
Use dry moss. Any dry moss should work
can we use only aquasoil for making terrarium. your all video are awesome.
Thanks. You can. This video will provide more insight ruclips.net/video/8ocY_L0zXBg/видео.html
Hi! I'm new on your channel and I really love your videos! May I know if I could use sawdust *wood shavings* instead of dried moss as substitute for this soil mix?
Thank you. I have never used saw dust so can’t comment. But you can always try it out. Let me know if it worked 😀
@@TheUrbanNemophilist thank you so much Sir! Great help!
Great video and information 👍❤️✨
Thanks
Thanks! What is the purpose of the sand? Our river sand here is black and fine 🤣 Have you tried a substrate mix without sand e.g Garden Soil + Coco Peat + Sphagnum Moss + Bark of Wood (any kind of bark ☺️, we don't have Amazon here). I'm planning this type of substrate mix but I'm not sure if this is a good combination.
Sand keeps the soil loose and helps in drainage. You could try without sand too.
@@TheUrbanNemophilist Thank you so much. 😅 I'll try to add black river sand because of what you said 🤣
G'day T U N. I found this & your other videos extremely interesting and informative. I would like to ask. I have a worm farm. Would it be beneficial to add Vermicompost? If so to that mix what ratio? Say one or two? Please continue making your video's
Thank you. I have never used vermicompost in my terrarium substrate mix but it should be fine to add in smaller quantities. Try it out and let me know the result.
Hey! Thank you very much for this channel! It's amazing!
One quick question related to the nutrients that this mix has: I've heard that coco peat does not have many, so do you think it's necessary to add some other soils with nutrients? Thanks
Thank you. For terrariums the substrate is mostly kept inert since we do not want the plants to grow fast. Overtime dead leaves and organic matter will provide some nutrients to the plants.
Having said that you can always add nutrient rich garden soil to the mix for large sized builts.
gustavo!
Extremely informative! Is there any alternative for the moss and pine bark? And can I add something like vermicompost to the substrate?
Thanks. You can skip the bark if you like and use pumice instead. Dry moss is good to have but you can skip it too if you can’t get it. You can add vermicompost in small quantities.
Wanted to ask - how do plants get nutrients - vermicast ?? Or not needed
Not needed but you can add. Decaying leaves and other matter actually breaks down to create some nutrients for plants. You can check out my nutrient enriched terrarium soil mix video.
Do you think i can just use compost for this? Maybe i can mix in some soil collected from a forest too?
Sure feel free to experiment. You could also check out my nutrient enriched recipe

Is it ok to use sphagnum moss instead of fern moss?
yes you can use dried sphagnum moss
Thanks a lot for sharing such an informative video. I am just about to start with my first terrarium. I have a basic query, since all the ingreditents are mostly inert, how do we address nutrition for the plants? I assume that they will need little bit of nutrition...
Thanks. The springtails and beneficial bacteria that develops overtime will help break down decaying matter into nutrients. Also the type of plants we use in terras does well without much nutrients. We also dont use ferts as we do not want the plants to grow much but you can can use if you like for both terrestrial and aquatic plants terrariums.
@@TheUrbanNemophilist Thanks a lot for your reply that gave lot of insights.
In case if we would like to add some fert, which one would you recommend? Just curious
@@jyothivaidyanathan go for liquid ferts mainly NPK and micro nutrients. For my aquatic plants I use macro nutrients and micro nutrients from aquatic remedies. The ADA liquid ferts are the best but expensive.
@@TheUrbanNemophilist Oh! never thought about liquid fert. Thanks a lot for that info. How frequently do you recommend applying it?
@@jyothivaidyanathan for aquatic plant terras maybe once a month or even twice. Depends what works for you. I dont fert my terrestrial plant terras.
Hello I am very confused because because you add only 4 items but there are many aquscaper add charcoal, aquasoil, coco peat, drymoss, pine bark, sand, bermicast now what should I do ,please reply should i use these 4 thing you were shows ?

Hi,from where I can get dried fern moss. Can the regular moss which grows in rainy season be dried and used
aarush rai you can buy from amazon. You can also use dried regular moss
Keep it up
Please suggest where can we buy this fern moss, orchid bark and the fine gravel you have used .. in reasonable rates .. in Delhi
Another thing where do we keep such terraniums during harsh weather in Delhi .. temperature 38 to 44°C during 2 summer months and .. dropping to 8/9° during extreme winter
Buying links of materials in the description. Fern moss you can source ethically from the wild. You can check out my care tips video on how to care for a terrarium.
Is this mix good for indoor dish gardens too?
Yes it is. You will need to use nutrients separately. Thanks
Will the barks grow mold in a closed terrarium?
Processed Pine bark will not
Can you please tell where we could get the pine bark?
Shruthi B you can buy from amazon.
Any suggestions for alternative of dried moss
You can skip the moss if you don't have it. However you can also buy a pack of dried moss on amazon.
Thank you !!
Hi,
Can I get any bark from the forest, I dont want to buy any material, trying to be as pure and natural as possible.
ABHIJEET AVATE you can definitely try that. I suggest you boil the bark in water before you use them inside the terrarium.
@@TheUrbanNemophilist Thanks, will do that.
Will coconut tree bark do ? I saw a tree dying in our area so asked
Not sure. It might attract mold if not well seasoned
Can I add some perlite in place of pyne bark?
You can surely try
Hi...plzz guide if I don't put springtails..is it okk???...as I don't know where can I get them
Yes it should be fine.
I did not use dried moss
Is there any problem
No worries. Should be fine.
Thanks I love your advice
Its very helpful for us
This soil mixture can be used for all terrarium plant please ...
Yes for all terrestrial plant but will not work for aquatic plants
@@TheUrbanNemophilist thanks
Hey!!
Where can I find the dry moss?
You can buy dry moss from online marketplaces like amazon
I did not use moss
Is there any problem

Can i use play sand as an alternative? Thanks in advance!
Shoukd be ok if its neutral without any chemicals or colors. Also coarser sand is better. Play sand may be too fine.
Hi, can I use coco dust? Peat isn't available now.
Yes you can
Is bone powder recommended?
Nice!
From where I can collect hypnum moss?? I live in Bangladesh 🇧🇩.The environment is here like West Bengal.which are the best spots to search for them??
Hypnum moss is typically found in tropical rain forest conditions. I get mine from the Western ghats in South India.
I bought sand, peat moss, gravel, potting mix soil & coconut fibre. If you could tell me the measurment to make substrate of all these iteams it would be a great help.
thanks
afsana akhter tania you can follow as per video. Potting soil is not needed. Just use coco peat, sand, dried moss and pine bark
@@TheUrbanNemophilist thank u for ur quick reply but as i already bought those items if u could help me with that.
thanks in advance
afsana akhter tania sure. Pls list down what all you have and i will give you a recipe for your substrate mix.
@@TheUrbanNemophilist great thank u so much..1. Gravel 2. Peatmoss mix 3. All purpose potting soil 4. Coconut fibre 5. Sand
afsana akhter tania use one part of finely chopped coco fiber if its not a cocopeat block, one part of sand,1/4 part peat moss. That should work. You can use a very small amount of potting soil but should be free from any manure or fertilizers.
How do you get the nutrients needed for the plant...??

@@TheUrbanNemophilist thank you. I'm going to mix it into the substrate tomorrow. Thanks again!
In the soil mix I found no compost or fertiliser so then what helps the plants to grow?
Nutrients are produced over time from dead leaves and decaying matter. You can also check out this nutrient enriched soil mix video

We don’t add ferts separately for terrestrial plants terrariums. We want the plants to grow slowly.

From where can i get the dried moss in Bangladesh?
You will need to check out at local garden centres
Can you please tell me what I can use instead of bark and moss.....
aaisha Syed you can just use cocopeat and sand in that case
@@TheUrbanNemophilist thank you so much for your reply
What is the benifit of pine bark?
It helps retain moisture, discourages weed growth, protects roots from extreme climates. Also known to provide small amount of micro nutrients to plants.
pls explain the reason why u chose what. beginners may not get it
Sand will help in drainage. Dried moss.and coco peat will retain moisture. Coco peat is also close to ph neutral which is preferred in a terrarium. Bark will help in retaining moisture as well as aeration. It also prevents soil compaction.
