  • Lets discuss what has helped me get an interview. Here are my resume writing tips for older people. Tailored specifically for older people. Here is the Tedx talk I mentioned about Ageism • How workplace ageism h...
Being laid off / retrenched twice in your late 50s is something that is hard to restart. No one wants to give you a job. In fact apart from a few small companies also owned by older people, I have almost zero chance of getting a job. I've decided to abandon what I have experience in... 35+ years as a programmer and try and follow other creative adventures. So far, it's all fun and interesting to a limited degree, but no income is coming in, so the stress of my future is always eating at my conscious. To be honest, people don't care for my opinion or advice because you're old and you are seen as someone who should just keep quiet and retire. That's easy if your loaded with money. I'm not.
Losing your job the same week that Covid restrictions started was hard. More than hard, I mean impossible to get a job. That's for a person like me in their 60's.
I'm getting to the point financially where If I make a slip-up it's quite possible I'll end up homeless permanently.
I have a lot of things to say, but I don't know who wants to listen and on what topic. Please let me know!

Writing a compelling, unique cover letter can help I find. I helped a couple of friends do this. In one case her interviewer told her that made her Application stand out . Of course at the interview it was all up to her to prove herself and she did get the job. But the cover letter helped her not get overlooked.

It's outrageous. Everyone deserves a chance to earn a living. I don't like that we've normalized leaving people behind.

Everyone is going to face the same thing when they get older. Many older people don't care as they are well off, but that's not true for everyone.

In my part of the world they expect to see personal info like Date of Birth on resume, also ID no.which reveals our age as the first 2 nos.are year of birth like 70 If you are born in 1970. They will bin applications lacking in this info. So there is no chance of hiding age.

Lucky here no one says anything for fear of being labelled discriminatory. But who knows what people are really thinking.

That's one hell of a black pill. I've not worked for 10 years, savings running out now, and was at least hoping to get a driving or shelf stacking job, but at 62 what are the chances. Door dash or something maybe?

It's kind of depressing to lower yourself to jobs only a teenager would do with no experience. We share the same lifestyle!

Here in Asia , elders get more respect including in the work place. Would you agree with that having worked in Malaysia?

Definately more respect. I enjoyed the daily eat out lunches very much. Also true for latin Americas.

@@AgeBlocked I grew up in Malaysia. Takeout is a lot cheaper in both Malaysia and Singapore . On our trips to Australia we have found eating out pretty pricey so we usually get an apartment or air bnb to do some self catering meals.

Another thing I noticed there is how all the spices tasted much fresher. It did make a difference to food enjoyment.
