I worked in a supermarket from 17 to 20 years of age. I didn't like the work that much, but I met a lot of people and had many friends. I'm in my fifties now, and I'd never return to that. . It is a revolving door. People come and go.During the eighties, supermarkets were then becoming places that were not career paths. Part time shifts became the priority, rather than full time. It's a waste of time.

I worked at a supermarket for a few months, and I did not last long. I didn't like it for the following reasons. They were inconsistent with your shift hours. IE you would be the late-night cashier (7pm-11pm or close.) the night before then you would have to do work morning shift (6am-1pm) the next day. This made it hard to plan your doctor visits and other business. You had to wait for someone to relieve you for your break and somebody might not show up. One time I came in to work and did not get a break until one hour before I was off! To make things better they should hire you for First shift or second shift and those are the hours set for you. It would make it easier to plan your life if your schedule was consistent. One more thing, In USA you don't get a stool or seat of any kind when a cashier. You are on your feet the whole time. I was not much fun for my husband when I got home.

You don't have to live in a tent, buy a van... Seriously though, you have no income, i.e zero reason to live in an expensive area/city center. Move to a small town, and buy a van in case you ever become homeless. You have room to maneuver here, you're going to be fine. Cash out what you need from your remaining 120k, buy some Intel stock. It's going to be ok, you have more than you need and don't have to work again if you live within your means.

You were a bit light on details there but on the face of it you could sue them for wages up until the point you are fully employed again. Especially so if you got an offer in writing. Not your problem if their employee is making job offers on their behalf without the authority to do so.

If you lost $ in this market since covid, maybe age isn't your problem... Both of the recent crashes were predicted weeks/months in advance. You bought high, even worse than selling low. If you get any more $ to play with, invest in Intel before the stock hits over $25, an easy 5 year 100% return.

Be so good at your skill they can't get rid of you otherwise start a side hustle that is scalable so if you do get laid off you can turn your side hustle into a full time job. Another option is to invest wisely be it real estate and/or stocks/etf. If you have FU money then ageism is no longer an issue.

I worked in my local Morrison's once for six months. I've had many, many jobs since I left school - farm work, clerical work, shop work, manual labouring, driving, care work - and this was, without doubt, one of the worst experiences. It was like a slave camp. Push-push-push. Things like unloading, stock checks, counts which all had to be done by a certain time, or you got it in the neck. We were often, too, using sub-standard hand-helds which kept going offline or losing battery power. We didn't get paid extra if we ran over on our shift, too - and we had to clock out at the right time. So there was all that pressure - plus the inevitable daily calls to go to checkouts at busy periods. We had no choice but to either work at double-pace or cut corners and use guess work. By comparison, working back in care again - as I now am - is a relief!
