With a face like that no wonder he was always fighting.
And red hair to boot
Hee hee true!
😅
😂😂😂😂😂😂 apparently there are no existing likenesses of him in existence. He was described as being thick set and grew fat when older. That coin was never really meant to be a true likeness. He looks like he's melted!
Hey, Ease off, I have Red hair myself and I think I'm rather lovely!
Thank you soo much for this !! I’d been dying to see William and you did him justice - I didn’t realise that French was spoken for 300 years !! Scare bleu !!! ♥️
Thank you, dear, it is always a joy watching your videos, keep doing it, please, you are so great at this, besides, doing better and better, thank you again!
Agnes Sorel... When?
But also from William de Cotentin or written Cotton or de Cottone
An Anglo-Saxon said he had a weak chin. The rest is history.
Interestingly,Only One Of William The Conqueror’s Bones Remains In His Tomb,Which was Ransackef in The French Revolution.
Nothing brings out the worst of humanity than a good, old Socialist revolution.
William looked not as I envisioned. Kinda creepy looking to be honest. Enjoyed your video as usual. 💜
Well it's highly probable he did not look like what is shown on the coin.
I mean have a look at the coins of that era; correct me if I'm wrong, but it wasn't like the Greek or Roman coinage of the classical era.
When I see William the Conqueror and Richard Lion Heart, then I look at my boyfriend, who is from Rouen, I immediately see the Norman traits still alive and well: the fair, freckled, ginger/blonde complexion, light eyes, etc. Wow, it's really incredible!! Thank you for this, Panagiotis!! ❤
Well you cant judge a book by its cover, he looked like he couldnt swat a fly, looks quite evil though, in history I never liked him and always thought of him as an invader, like the vikings., we do have a lot of french words in our language.
Excellent work as always. However, I was hoping this episode should've included Harold Godwinson and Harald Hardrada; the three contestants for the throne of England in 1066.
I shouldn't think there's any existing depiction of Harold Gidwinson to work with (and certainly not Harald) - he was not only an Anglo Saxon king (and there's not much left by them), he was also the loser, which means he sadly got erased from detailed history to an extent. I agree though that's a shame, it'd be interesting to see/know about him.
@@victoriar4637 That makes sense.
@@victoriar4637 I would recommend "Harold: The Last Anglo-Saxon King", by Ian W. Walker. The author makes the point that Harold Godwinson was, in fact, a far more important figure than his brief tenure as king would suggest. An excellent read.
@@davekirby6580 thanks I'll look for that!
William removed his helmet not his visor, there were no visors then
It's probably mistranslated.
I’m a descendant. It’s interesting to see your own history come alive
Totally unnatural looking. Nobody has eyes like that, poor job.
Wow fascinating - so this was how we in Britain started our long battling with the French!! William was certainly a hard man to have as King, and he looked it too lol
I often wondered how much truth was behind the stories of how violent the courtship between him and Matilda was (by him) - she was an attractive woman and it sounds like she counteracted his cruelty.
Very impressive story about William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy, who became William I,the first Norman King of England. That can be woow!! By the way, I am always curious about the facial reconstruction of William the Conqueror's children: heirs/ successors William II and Henry I or Robert II, Duke of Normandy ... Maybe next time. 😉👍. Indeed,I am proud of your wonderful job on everything of William the Conqueror!!!!! 👏👏👏👏. Thanks, great man, Mr. Panagiotis Constantinou!!
IMPRESIONANTE RECREACION DE ESTOS PERSONAJES¡¡¡
LA HISTORIA EN TODO SU ESPLENDOR¡¡
GRACIAS POR PERMITIRNOS CONOCER A TODAS ESTAS PERSONAS CUYA FAMA HA LLEGADO A NUESTROS DIAS¡¡👏👏👏
If charles had red hair....looks like him from the neck up
Well, this is nightmare fuel.
William was also financed by Jewish parties in agreement to practise usury in England. Something we are all suffering from.
Mmmmm...not up to your usual quality
These are my ancestors. I'm a direct descendant. Thank you! But..isn't she so pretty, so lovely :) Beautiful. Actually, I think Mathilde had her own claim to the English crown, did she not?
Such a tiny little woman for all those children! Heard she had a temper of her own. Lucky genes 🧬 there. 🙏🙏👵🇦🇺
Congratulations! You are French.
I've read that she was a fifth or 6th great granddaughter of Alfred the great.
@@rexadebayo3380 Norman French :)
This was fantastically well done. You always bring in the rich history of your art. Thanks so much for the blessing of your art.
William was also known as William the bastard.
Wow, so he was a bastard in more ways than one. Even the Orthodox Church lists him as a bastard right from the start of his bio. They are correct.
The lovechild of Ed Sheeran & Vladimir Putin!
Another fascinating video bringing historical figures to life with outstanding accompanying music.
Thank you, Panagiotis for these fantastic videos and keep them coming.
Ur welcome mate! Thanks 👍
The Norman conquest meant for England the return to Roman times. With King William, the country was able to enter history, like other countries such as France, Spain or Italy, and thus begin a rise through history until reaching an empire. The fact that English contains many words of Latin root, demonstrates a Roman mentality, that is, conquering and civilizing, something that the Protestant Nordic peoples, such as Holland or Germany, lack, more focused on race and nationalism.
Interesting..
His eyes were freaky
He looked more like the devil than his father did id say ? A scarey looking man indeed
I highly doubt William of Normandy looked anything like that. By 1066 the man was already putting on weight with his sons Robert and William Rufus at fighting age. You even put a beard on him lol.
When will you do a forensic representation of The Anglo-Saxon Kings such as Alfred The Great, Edward The Confessor and King Harold I?
Most people today with European ancestry is decended from him. 😊
hear is one thing. people really shouldn't trust statues and carvings that were made around 900s-1100s. if you notice one thing, most of them have unnaturally long noses and a lot of distance between cheeks and mouth line. I don't mean people with these descriptions didn't exist back then or don't exist now, but the fact that all of them around that time seemed like that, is really weird and hard to believe, especially when even Ancient Greek or Roman pieces seem to have much more realistic faces. which makes me believe it was only their style or beauty standard for people in high positions. so, although I might believe the shape of their lips or eyes, but I don't believe all nobles back then, had that kind of noses and faces
No offense but William's face gave me a little bit of cringe, specially the long nose, the cheeks were so high and the eyes were rounded and small.
William the Conqueror is creepy looking. I am really enjoying the recreations and the historical information.
De Guillermo el conquistador y Ricardo corazón de León descienden los Argentinos
Well he is rather homely- the American definition, not British, but I'm sure there must be people in the UK who look like Him.
William 1 was as evil and murderous as he looks. King Harold was a much better person in every way.
I can't think that William's hair is right, in the tapestry at Bayeux all the Normans are shown with short severe haircuts, shorn completely at the back.
All the kings looked up to and respected Edward the confessor, (Anglo Saxon king), but amazing history all the same.
Coins don’t really depict the look of a monarch especially in the early medieval to the dark ages. They simply are poor representations due to the lack of artistic aim to have realism.
The nose shape though might be true but the generated face is kind of impossible for any human to have.
I visited the Bayeux Tapestry on a trip to France in high school. It was incredible.
Matilda, Robert, Alfred and William are popular names in central Italy. Longed says William's deHauteville cousins helped him invade England.
Love your videos, but why does William look so strange?
There goes the neighbourhood.
The ending makes me think of the Conan the barbarian ending. His sitting on the throne.
"Huh, Crom laughs at you and your four winds!"
Very interesting. Living in an area that used to belong to France, then lost to the British on the Plains of Abraham, the constant intertwining and fighting between the two nations fascinates me. Thank you.
Well Quebec is French dominated even though it's part of the Commonwealth. If the French Population were bigger then Canada would belong to the French Descendants.
William the conqueror had one very pretty wife
Even today we hear about royal balding men ( with red hair as well) and big ears etc. perhaps genetics come through via the complicated lines of history. He sort of had the kind of face only a mother would love. Though Matilda found him quite o.k 🙏🙏🙏👵🇦🇺
William the gamer
Wow, very impressive. His was the last success invasion of Britain by a foreign power. I didn't know his wife was part Saxon.
Pushing his future wife off the horse was kind of a foreshadowing of his own death.
Once again the forehead is too short and eyes should be in middle.
Yo its Mark Zuckerberg😂
Matilda was attractive.
On dirait un mélange entre Liam neeson et Vladimir Poutine 😅
🤔 he reminds me a little of Putin.
History facts came to life, that still makes mad how Anglo Saxon life was permanently replaced by those French Normans.
Которые на самом деле были норвежцами. Ролло?
Looks like Putin.....o dear
Something is not right with his eyes.
AWESOME VID & WILLIAM IS MY 31ST GREAT GFATHER..
My 31st as well. Allons y mon cousin.
Hello cousin! William is my 29th great-grandfather.
We're all related to him

@@bruhmcchaddeus413 WANA BET $$ ON IT?? I'VE RESEARCHED MY ANCESTRY & TRACED IT ALL THE WAY BACK TO CHARLEMAGNE WHO IS MY 41ST GREAT GFATHER..
Piety is a GOOD THING!
Poor Matilda who had to live with such a horrible man
Not to excuse William's character, although it must be examined through the lens of medieval kingship which was pretty brutal by modern standards, it's worth noting that he was devoted to Matilda for the entirety of their marriage, and had (as far as we know) no mistresses or illegitimate children, quite unlike his descendants, notably Henry I, who had plenty.
What’s the music?
The music behind these videos is superb. As a devotee of English medieval History, love this channel.
Thank you very much!
My granny princess Marianna Cottone she descents from Sir John de Cotentin Duke of Normamdy and Cornwall
Wondering history lesson. Thank you
Always fascinating to watch.
My granny princess Marianna Cottone she descents also from Robert de Cottone
Hey you can only work with what you got.
Your work is outstanding, and as I have been plowing through biographies of medieval English kings in recent months (nine so far, I'm close to finishing one on Richard the Lionheart), it's a pleasure to watch your videos. I admire your efforts very much.
Interessante...
Hi, I am about to have my good wish to ask you, who was Edgar the Atheling, who was proclaimed king after the death of Harold II, the last Anglo- Saxon King of England on 14 October 1066?? 🆗️🆗️, I have my great respect to suggest you to read good 📖 book "British Kings and Queens: Complete Biographical Encyclopedia of the Kings and Queens of Great Britain " by Mike Ashley, do you remember? And I can assist you to read other 📖 book "The Normans, the History of a Dynasty" by David Crouch, you probably like.. Thanks, with my praying hands to you as with my honest heart. Keep doing your best!!
Wonderful job! Love the WoW Soundtrack!
I hope you will do Alexander Hamilton for us.
Amazing depiction of William I!
Très bon côté historique de sa vie❤
World of Warcraft music? Lol nice touch
Super cool and fantastic
Well, that was a tumultuous courtship 😮
My ancestor.
Thanks To This Video.
That was amazing!
Wooow 😊
Another fantastic video!
I’m sorry but his eyes couldn’t have been that beady. He needs larger pupils. The nose, chin, and the red hair is a good guess. Especially the nose. Having a slightly larger and hooked nose is prominent even in the current royals.
A Broken nose 🙂 you can see this mostly in people who fight a lot, usually ring fighters or people with a criminal past.
@@panagiotisconstantinouwell thank you for keeping my great grandad alive. Love your work 👍
😹 ну и красавчик....
Excellent! ❤❤
Thank you! 😃
What about on his younger years. Teens or 20's?
Are there any images of him then?
It is already difficult in his late years...only simples drawings
Very rough guesswork based on an extremely crude tiny etching on an ancient coin. Still good work though, considering we don't have anything else to go on. Oh, and they now don't think Harold was killed by an arrow to the eye, because the "arrow" in question on the tapestry was found to be a badly repaired rip.
He also went by his description in historical records, as was told in the video.
So a Frenchman became England's king....who knew? Not me
A Frenchman of close Scandinavian ancestry, hence the name "Norman" (i.e. North Men).
Looking into the story of how these North men (Vikings) became French is interesting too. Beware, if you go down that rabbit hole you might get stuck in there 😉
Viking Rollo travelled south and reached Normandy in 911. He urged his men to take local wives and negotiated with the king of France to obtain jurisdiction over the territory.
Well, this is a very PC view of Viking invasions 😁 From what I know the Vikings wanted to invade Paris. The king of France placated them by gifting them what became Normandy if they did not destroy Paris. And yes they took local wives because it was an army of invasion, they did not arrive with women. So their children learnt their mothers' language (French) which means that the Scandinavian language quickly disappeared.
@@isabelled4871 😂 bastards!
I don't have Norman ancestry but my sons have an unusual surname that can be traced to the battle of Hastings and they and their father all look like they could be Plantagenet kings whereas I look Dutch.
Imagine how terrifying those 80 castles going up all over the country must have been. Subjugation by stone edifices!
Me through my granny's ancestors I descent from William The conqueror
William The conqueror and Matilda of Flanders are grandgrandpatents of King Henry Il of England, One of many the ancestors of my granny princess Marianna Cottone
Too bad it changed 😂
If it hadn't, if we'd stayed with his sort of government, then I doubt there would've been a United Kingdom or a British Empire. Instead there would've been an English Empire, that would've been at least as cruel as the Nazis.
At least we're not speaking French 😂
@@gothicwestern Actually, modern English is partly made up of French because of him.
@@white-dragon4424 D'accord
@@white-dragon4424 Just curious how you can think that the English Empire would be this way? They (we actually) who were/are English have the Germanic blood, so curious how you come to this conclusion. Not asking in a bad way, but simply out of curiosity and to learn from others.
