I lost my security guard job for this reason. I often slepr in my car and had sympathy for people who did at Walmart. They changed their policy because vagrants were making the situation worse by just taking over parking lots as their homes. In order to be non-discriminatory, Walmart banned all overnight sleeping. I allowed some and the Walmart manager had me removed as that site security guard. Seeing that that Walmart was the only client that this security company had in this town. I was laid off. Good thing though, the pandemic started and I went on two years if nice unemployment. What did I do? You guessed it! Went on the road with my 1993 Winnebago!

Thats a shame. I hadnt noticed. To tell the truth I didnt really notice that pandemic. I ignored it and it ignored me.
I don't think traveling for two years while being on unemployment sounds bad. If you don't have to worry about other bills and you could have took that check and and pretty much vacationed for two years I say more power to you.

When I was a kid, my dad taught me about 'the knock'. But his version was about how when you get that feeling in the pit of your stomach that tells you that no matter where you are, no matter what you're doing, in about 15 seconds, you're gonna shit.
I live in bend, and Walmart just increased security due to our homeless increase in the past year. I work down at the Old Mill district as a security officer. I feel bad when I knock on car windows to inform people that they can't sleep overnight in our parking lots. I always give everyone enough time to wake up, and process what is going on, so the individual doesn't become stressed when waking from a deep sleep. Love the content!
Yeah, been noticing that. I think the forest fires started in the homeless camps in the past few years have really been making people nervous. Hopefully they get those homeless shelters and housing going before next summer.
I thought that it’s ok by Walmart if you camp at night in their lot
I spent a couple weeks fall of 2020 traveling around the US for a photo assignment...I stayed in about half a dozen Walmart parking lots from Arkansas to Nogales, AZ. The only Walmart lot I was kicked out of was in Las Vegas...the security guard started making the rounds notifying folks right at 11pm when they closed. He was really cool to me, though...out of the 6 or 8 people he kicked out, when I told him I was just traveling through, he told me to park in a smaller lot adjacent, which officially was not on his watch. I was left alone for the night, except for 2 or 3 crazy homeless people having shouting arguments all night with their invisible friends.
People need to have a place to live. This is really a sad commentary on our country.

I got offered a job in Northern California 4 years back but I was straight broke! I accepted the job, built a bed in my malibu and joined the gym when I got there. Man, people treated me like a criminal for sleeping in my car. Eventually after 4 months I got into a living situation and now I'm thriving.

yeah, I'm doing the same next week. I don't have a job offer, yet. There are no work opportunities here that line up with my degree, so I'm going from city to city job hunting. Only got $300 to my name.

74 to 79 I lived in my VW bus and surfed with my dog Punch. Never gota knock swept the lot of glass and always collected trash. I had a reputation to maintain and the cops brought me coffee and sometimes donuts or breakfast. Small talk and a look at my retired USCG ID made my presence welcome with neighbors that understood years of service earned me privileges and privacy.
dang man must've been a different time. I've gotten "the knock" about 6 times in my 8 months of living on the road. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.
I work as a mobile homeless outreach worker so I am often the person knocking on cars (although it is never to make people move but just to offer them services if they need it) and I used to live in a car when I was a kid with my mom, which was fairly traumatic. And I still have this deep seated desire to live in a car or an RV. When I bought my first car, I intentionally bought a Honda Fit because I needed a car that I could easily live in if the need arose. You never know where life is gonna take you. Thanks for sharing your experiences

I lived in an old van on the road for a year with a homeless young lady I took in, and 2 little dogs. This brought back so many memories! And yes we met your qualifications! Lol
Nikki, I’ve been following and admiring your channel and as a retired urban stealth van dweller I finally share what I dread most with you, the knock! 24 hour fitness of which I was a member booted me out and so there goes my membership. I didn’t want to patronize them again. It was perfect for me because right after my daily sauna and shower, I just go out to my Van and sleep on my sofa bed. So, McDonald’s is a good spot. Specially the 24 hour ones. They also have free WiFi, food and drink and clean restrooms. Motels is another. And outskirts the cities are the very clean rest areas. Did that until I turned 70. Good luck and I’m praying for you. PS. I now live mostly at a tropical island which you are most welcome to visit, vacay, stay if you get tired of the cold climate. Ciao.

Hey Nikki - I stealth camp in my 2018 Honda Civic Hatchback quite often. I've been all over the country, actually the world too, and will tell you that the absolute best place to stealth camp in your car is at upscale hotels. You want to park where there are tons of cars so you blend in, where there is no rift raft at night, and where you don't "stand out" for "The Knock" to even happen. Upscale hotels like the Hyatt , Marriott, Hilton, Holiday Inn, etc are the best! Everyone is inside their hotel rooms and hotel staff never roam the parking lots after dark. Remember, the key is to not stand out, ......so be among tons of other parked vehicles!

@@birdlover7776 Thanks - I'm camping in my Civic right now! In Sarasota, Florida at a Marriott, no problems at all. I park in a dark parking spot, put my window coverings up a bit after dark, then do some computer work and have a beer/relax - got a 5' 10" bed in the back end - it's quite comfortable! Then get a hot coffee at sunrise in the morning and off to some fishing spots! Caught a hammerhead shark yesterday and some spanish mackerel today fishing. Take Care

You might want to put a harness on camper full time especially if he ever slips off an trail edge .This way you would have some way of lifting him back up vs no chance with just at the collar IMO
Columbia makes a great soft sport harness that actually doubles as enough floatation to keep them up if they fall into a rough patch of water or the ocean.
I have no investment in Columbia as a company; they just make a few good things at okay price points and functional dog harnesses for active owners have been a couple of them.
Agreed. You’d be surprised how Quickly a dog will forgot about the danger it’s around. A harness will allow you to pull them up without strangling and having them slip out

Agree. My dogs wear collars full-time, but when we were having off-road adventures, the harnesses would go on. Had two instances where I almost lost dogs over cliffs!
I think that's a great idea! Better safe than sorry. I once had a dog he was so smart he'd watch the news with me lol one day he jumped off a very high roof luckily he was OK but Dog's only have the mind of a 2 or 3 year-old their whole life no matter how smart they might seem.

When my wife and I were full time RVers we always went inside WalMart, Cracker Barrel, Cabela's etc. and asked permission to park in their parking lot over night. And we always did business with them ( no matter how small ) when they said yes. We never overnight parked at a place of business without first going inside and asking if it was okay. We were full time RVers for over 2 1/2 yrs and we never got the knock.

For me, there is nothing in this life as special as a well-adjusted, happy and active dog. Mine is now 15 years old, beginning to have failing hips, but it's still a joy to watch him running (briefly) and being playful in deep fluffy snow. I've met no better companion. 'Absolutely love Camper.
having had both dogs and kids, when couples ask me if they should have kids I ask if they've had a dog before. :-)
If they say "no", I tell them to get a dog first - if you can learn to raise a dog okay there's a pretty good chance you'll be able to handle kids. They're just basically little kids for their entire lives so once you can manage that then you can probably move up to something that will be able to operate more independently.
In fact, when people get married they should be issued a dog so that they can find out if they are going to want to really be parents or not. :-)
I feel ya. I have a 15 year old dog and she has the wear and tear of getting older. But she is by far my favorite friend and companion.🥰💞🐶
My best friend is Abby the wonder mutt, she is 15 years old and has been with me since she was 8 weeks old , she too is slowing down with age...the hikes are shorter and the breaks longer...but nothing is better than the love of an old dog.
To be 15, and still prancing like that is amazing.
He has a good base-line metabolism PLUS you don't over feed him.

Last year I was inspired by you to live in my Prius when hard times hit and it had been AMAZING! I’m super stealth about it as I’m a bit embarrassed to be homeless, but your smiles and laughter make it all seem good.
I rarely sleep around others, but stay at campgrounds a lot for safety reasons ( and hot showers!) and I was glad you mentioned that trusting your gut instincts is important. Even at campgrounds I have occasionally felt the need to move on earlier than planned because of sketchy people circling me. Women need to be extra cautious and my dog Bubba adds an extra layer of safety to my adventures these days. I trust HIS instincts. I’m in Oregon at the moment too and it is an incredibly beautiful state. Take care!
Absolutely, always trust your instincts!!! I used to have some creeper dude park RIGHT next to me every day at the park. An entire, gigantic, miles-long park, and he'd park right next to me every day. His van had NO windows, and he never spoke to me, but he'd park just past me, so the angle of his van allowed him to look into my camper. SUPER fucking creepy. Then he found the street that I would part on at night (directly in front of my old apartment, so I knew all the neighbors) and started parking there at night too!!! It would have been different had he introduced himself, like so many other fulltimers/vanlifers had ("Hey, I've seen you around! I'm living in that truck! How the hell are ya?!") but he never said a word. Yeah, I'm not trying to be a statistic on the nightly news, dude! I started changing my routine up so he'd stop creeping on me. My dog was an absolute lifesaver when I was living in the camper too. Anyone touching it or approaching would send her into Cujo mode. People who were not well-meaning would quickly turn and walk away when they saw/heard her.
Stay safe out there. This is a great time connect with yourself on a deeper level by trusting your instincts, the way humans have done for thousands of years surviving in mother nature.

@@alimis426 Since I was fulltiming in a camper in a city I'd lived in for a decade, and still had a job there, it gave a false sense of security, for sure. As soon as I was like, "Hmmm, I've got a stalker," I changed things up immediately! Always better safe than sorry!

I got my first knock after about 5 yrs of travel. It was at the Pagosa Springs, Co. Walmart I had used several times before. They had changed their policy about overnighting. The Security guard was very kind and pointed me to a quiet vacant lot nearby under a stunning Ponderosa Pine. Win for me.

Honestly, I’ve been around and seen a lot. But the PNW road trip with just me and my dog was a top memory. You get to see through their eyes and their nose!! And cuddle!
I was staying in my car for a few months after moving from Austin to houston and I got the knock at Walmart by security BUT they were super sweet and told me to park just outside the Walmart parking lot and in this other parking area that’s conjoined. They said they would keep an eye on us knowing me and others sleeping in their cars over there.

It's wonderful to see you with your dog on leash, I live in an outdoor recreation area and so many people let their dogs run off leash and they get seriously hurt or killed -- snakes, avalanches, falling through ice, moose. It's great that you show your dog can have a wonderful and free time and the leash doesn't get in his way at all.
Not to mention it's very respectful to e1 who doesn't want even a "friendly dog" jumping on them or just close in general. I'm a dog lover too but realize e1 else isn't. She's definitely doing it right for all involved.

@@RR-iq8ze He's on a long lead for most of the video (not in the car, there be a dog park there, that sort of thing is fine). Sometimes she has it by hand and sometimes at her waist. I suspect he is really used to running with her, so it's a very natural run he has because he's used to the lead and being by her side, but it's a thin black lead, definitely therer.

When I was a 48 state trucker I got the knock a few times over the years. Sometimes telling me to move, sometimes asking if I needed any company 🤷♂️
It amazes me seeing all the good people living in their vehicles. Most are just ordinary people that have fallen on hard times. Sadens me that so many people have to live in their vehichles these days - but it is a sign of the times I suppose.
I am here in Portland Oregon. Literally hundreds of Vans + Cars with people obviously living in them around where I live. It's too expensive to rent or buy. I have 3 roommates. Super happy my parents bought a house here 20 years ago for 48K dollars.
And, I think it's going to get worst.
It's the " poorest" people that are sometimes the most happy.
Some people enjoy the freedom of low cost living
Some people can't afford $2000 dollars a month rent.

I met an author that finally figured out that one way to avoid being rousted out of town was to work in his vehicle at night with a light on. Unless the locals complain, he rarely got rousted. He would sleep during the day. Extreme for sure but worked for him. Remember, you can’t just drop anchor in a particular spot! You have to keep moving burning expensive gas.

I agree with you! There is nothing worse than running into an unleashed dog on a trail! I was in CO last summer, for 4 months, and hiked almost every day - never failed to come across an unleashed dog.
So grateful for your courage to share who you are and your perspectives in life. Really opened my eyes to a new way of looking at things and especially on obstacles and preconceived notions what is the "proper way to live." It takes a really secure and positive person like you to be able to not need what most think they cannot live without which are in reality just instilled to hold one back. You go girl, seeing you really live your life on your terms makes me feel like I can do the same.

I was run out of one Walmart parking lot in Massachusetts because there was a huge homeless problem, in that town. I think it depends on the size of the parking lot, how congested it is, how many travelers camp out, how many partiers there are, the homeless population, if it is attached to a shopping center and the owner is particular, and the time of the month. Just know, I think you are a smart, beautiful woman and living on the road is better than living on a couch, watching TV. I know a guy who put himself through Stanford University while living in two vans, just off campus. He did nothing with his masters degree and now he lives off the land and off the grid, in Alaska. I was run out of six places, in the two years I lived in my van. Three in Massachusetts, two in Northern California, one in Iowa.
Very smart to go with your gut and leave your first choice. There’s so many disappearances and creepy shit that’s gone on in the sisters area… may God bless you and keep you safe.🙏❤️
Trust your guts always. You have the right of not being nice, of being rude, suspicious and ridiculous. There are really very few people that can outsmart our subconscious animal instinct of sensing that something's off.

I am old but look younger than my real age. I will be 76 in July. You look and have the energy of a dear friend I grew up with that died of colon cancer at the age of of 53, just before her 54th birthday in January. I live in the beautiful state of Oregon and if anyone has not visited Oregon you are missing a fabulous place to reconnect with yourself and with the all mighty. This is truly God's Country. It is gorgeous state with everything.

It is a trespass situation. If they choose to exercise rights of property, then you just leave. There are thousands of NFS free campsites (there's a website for free or almost free campsites) that I use when motorcycle touring.
Many of them might be intimidating for a solo city person (way out in the in boonies)...but you're less likely to be stalked there than in a city or burblot.
Out in the woods I fear bears more than man...as I'm sleeping out...but in a car or van you should be secure.
Not true, I just got a criminal trespassing charge for sleeping in my van in the wrong parking lot, broken down no less, with proof I had the part to fix my van on order for the next day. The cop treated me like I had hurt someone, got handcuffed, the whole bit. this isn't the first time something like this has happened to me either and it's why I have absolutely no trust in any police officer or department. I must say I admire your adventurous spirit and your willingness to break free from "normal" conventions. As a married man with a kid I couldn't uproot my family to do this, but man, what an interesting way to live life.
I mean I've seen families live this kind of life. They usually do it out of a 5th wheel or a slide out trailer. It's a good option if you have kids that aren't that great in school and would rather take their education into their own hands. The biggest thing is the transition from having a house to living in a trailer exclusively and the transition from public to home school.

@@wapaa26 no. You don't put oil in new cars, you CHANGE oil, but you don't add oil to it unless it's old like mine where the gaskets wear out. I haven't added oil in my swapped engine for over a year now, since day 1. The cheaper alternative is to just replace the gaskets, but it would cost you around $1,400 the same price. But my Prius was really beat up with 280,000 miles that the previous owner I believe didn't take care of and I feel a used engine is better plus I wanted to learn swapping it, just my personal choice.

I raised two sons as a single father exploring many of the same places as you. We did the entire Pacific Coast Trail both ways over five years. We used a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited because the packs and equipment took up much space. I love granola girls because I was raised just outside of Yosemite N.P. We ended up in the Rocky mountains since we already packed the entire west coast. Andes mountains in five years when I retire. Good luck and health to you.

I honestly didn’t think this would be funny, so thanks for that! My first time on this channel. A little story. In the 70s, I lived in my car for 1 Winter. I can’t recall very many nights, whether it be in the middle of nowhere, in an odd parking lot, Walmart occasionally, or anywhere else that we parked that we didn’t get “ The knock“. It was the most annoying part of living in my car. Of course I wasn’t living in my car because I wanted to, so perhaps that is why we had knocks on a regular basis. “Knockers” seem to have radar. At least we had a hatchback, jobs, and we could always pull up to gas stations to use the bathroom and plug in our various grooming appliances and every now and then we would break down and stay in a hotel. For me traveling in a car and not staying in hotels was OK if it was not winter. But after staying in the car for that 1 winter, I was done with car living. 50 years later, yep I’ve definitely grown soft. Not so sure I’d even want to travel in a luxury RV. Stay safe and keep having fun.
Yeah I feel the same about camping..did loads in my 20s in the highlands of Scotland not in Summer. Not so keen in my 50s..

This is one of the few reasons I decided to stop living in my van, sick of losing sleep due to cops and security guards waking me up in the middle of the night because I didn’t urban stealth night camp in a good enough spot

I'm very impressed with your positivity! I lived out of my SUV while travelling across the US and Canada for 6 months or so and it can be a challenge at times. Definitely can be a great adventure though :) I got the knock once before myself.
The showers at whistler's bend park East of Roseburg are great too.

I have had just one "knock" the entire last year living and working in my van (Long haul expediting) and it was while I was sleeping on side of an urban dirt/sand road in south carolina. Officer was just checking to see if I was okay. I told him I had "ran out of mandated hours and had to stop there. It was shady and cooler when I layed down for nap" (this was just past midnight local time) . Chatted him up saw I was okay and my6 excuse held up cause I AM a commercial carrier but not one with commercial license. Therefore didn't have t0 keep a logbook tee hee . Nothing like living in a van that screams legitimate vandweller and not the truth , Why have rent ?? also ..feeds my adhd very nicely

I run a Strait truck(Isuzu FTR Extended cab w/bench bed, Class 6) with a 28 foot drybox on it doing Expedited Hot Shots. No CDL required to operate. However I run an Electronic Log because the Truck has a MC and USDOT number though so it is a Commercial Vehicle. They can't legally make you move if you're out of drive time on your Logs.

I live in Oregon and we stop at that park in Sisters where she took a shower multiple times. I teach my daughter how to rock climb on a structure there and we have snowball fights in the winter! Cool to see areas like that in this video.
I see so many RUclips channels dedicated to car or truck camping. I lost my job of 13 years. Since then I been trying to decide what I want the rest of my life to be like. I love traveling and I can see myself living the road lifestyle for awhile. I even experimented camping in my car a few days. I enjoy it and very soothing and relaxing. I often think of selling everything I own and live on the road for awhile.
Yes the hobo life has its draw.

@@mollykeane2571 As I understand it, we are winning the war against the sociopaths. It's looking like we all have to make a decision. Do we want to be 100% human, and let go of everything electronic? Or do you want to keep all electronics, and become TRANSHUMAN, and be part of the hive inner city highly surveiled community? It's up to each one of us. Once you commit to the dystopian transhumans agenda, you will no longer have free will. And you cannot get out. And if you choose to be organic, you will inevitably part of a homestead, or commune style group in a self sustainable country setting. And the masses appear to want to be "protected" by sociopaths. So that will be a horrific awakening for them. Anyone that got the jab is on their way to becoming a cyborg. There are still things they can do to rid themselves of their nano chip number that transmits when using an old android cell phone. You can deactivate it. We all need to fight this dystopian agenda because these "leaders" are using words like "USELESS, MEANINGLESS, AND WORTHLESS" when talking about us. @@mollykeane2571 ..I've been really lucky. A lot of people in the situation that I've been in have not been anywhere near so lucky.
God help you if you're living on UI, you run out of UI and haven't found a job. Or if your car breaks down. And if you keep driving your car...eventually it's going to break down. I have seen many families living in vans and cars, when they got to the point where it wouldn't start and they're sleeping in a hotel parking lot with no money, or spending their last money trying to get their vehicle fixed...that is not a pretty sight. And eventually they need tires, brakes, tags, insurance...a lot of gas...a starter, a clutch, whatever...the thing just wears out...wait until you see a whole family and two dogs living in a rusted-out old Chevy Suburban that won't even start or it will barely start and the muffler is half rusted out of it. These are people with nothing going for them, having burned almost all of their rope. Probably have passed-up a dozen jobs. When they get desperate enough they will take any job they can get. Anything that means a steady paycheck. Because nothing sucks more than being broke and watching your world fall apart around you.
When you have a decent job and some money and you're living in a decent place? Your problems reduce to getting bored with your job, losing interest in your work. It is a lot easier to find something interesting and useful to do at work than it is to find a new job after getting fired for lack of performance. It's also easy to live off your savings and your credit-cards. That always comes to mind. It's what happens after you run out of savings and your cards are maxed-out that keeps me from actually doing it. But for me, luckily with my current job I have a choice, I pretty-much set my own work-schedule, and my salary is high enough to make my labor worth the effort. I would be very happy to have to go into an office 8-5 5 days a week. It is, to a large degree, very-much about the money, my work and my working-environment. I might get bored with my job from time to time but I never get the feeling that I'd rather be unemployed and spending almost all my time, day after day, sitting in my car. But you know something, at some points in life, we don't really have a choice. It's better than living in a tent under a bridge with no car. There is no part of "camping" that I want to do on a regular basis. And the main thing, yes indeedy, is not to be broke. Broke is bad, very bad. I've been broke more than I ever want to be broke, ever again. What EVER I have to do to get and to keep a good job, I will do it as long as it doesn't involve sexual favors or criminal acts. And for me that has been my one distinguishing feature, my one outstanding strength. I will go to the mat to keep myself employed. I might get fired anyway but I'm going to give it my best shot. And if I do get fired, I'm not looking back. I'm looking for my next gig.
I have no sympathy for people who knowingly or negligently get themselves fired. Or who prove to be incompetent at both keeping their old job and finding a new job. There are too many people who are good workers who get laid-off or let go through forces beyond their control, out there busting their asses looking for a new job, to put-up with some lazy, stupid, idiot bullshit-artist. Or someone who thinks they are too smart for their boss and their employment, but won't go out and get a new job more suitable for their "talent" and gets themselves fired behind their attitude. The consequences of long-term unemployment are clear. Everyone who is unemployed for a long-enough time suffers them. Simply suffering those consequences is not nearly enough to justify sympathy in my eyes. You don't do that if you have any brains. If you don't have any brains, then that's what happens. Same for underemployment and the same for illegal activity. I refuse to feel sympathy for anyone who brings immense problems down on themselves. Not just because i am a hard-ass or an asshole. But because I have been there myself...more than enough times. You're not seeing a tear from me for your problems. I've had those problems more than enough times.
On the bright side, if you havent worked in 13 yrs, shouldnt take long to sell ur belongings.
