    Great Modification Vlad!

    Interesting video Vlad. As an electrical and electronics engineer i was watching with interest. Your work was fine. I would have changed both of the capacitors whilst the unit was stripped down, that is if they were the same size. It looks like something is shorting with the azimuth axis. Good luck 👍

      @AVTAstro  2 года назад

      Thanks! Yeah I'm not sure but the electrical engineer people recommend only replacing the c2 capacitor. Again not sure why but I have done that for years with no issue.

      @@AVTAstro I suppose if it’s that individual capacitor that is repeatedly failing then it would be pointless to change both. Good luck with the secondary fault 👍

      Likely so. Again I'm not the expert in the field and as far as the way that board actually works I'm about as well informed as how a cruise ship works... LOL.

      @@AVTAstro I am an EE too. Running a 10 tantalum cap at 18V is a bad idea. In fact, most EEs will use use a higher voltage rating for Electrolytic (the vertical cylinders) and tantalums (yellow/blue vertical ones). Exploding capacitors are highly undesirable (unless you are doing it for fun). This can also happen when you install them backwards. I have launched the can of an Electrolytic across the room before by over-voltaging it (in my younger years).

  • @GeekRedux

    Good video. While replacing the capacitors is a good idea, replacing them with tantalum caps again is not. All else being equal, electrolytic capacitors are a safer option, and less expensive.

    sometimes I think the You-tube algorithm can read my mind. While at no point have I typed in anything telescope related in over 3 years. Just the other day I was thinking about my LX-50 10 Inch I own. I bought it new back in '96. While I know the 50 vs 200 are different animals it might be a good idea to check on the old girl before I try and power her up again just to be safe. THANKS!

    By some insane cosmic luck someone in my local astronomy club gifted me a 10" LX200 that they purchased back in 1999. I haven't powered it on yet, but I just inspected the hand controller and it does look like the previous owner did have it professionally serviced at one point. A diode was soldered in parallel with C3 and flux on the backside of the PCB indicates C2 was replaced. Does this sound right to you? Should I have any reservations about powering it on?

      I guess I kind of don't think of the fact that some people might think your indorsing a brand by wearing a t-shirt with a brand on it while making a youtube video. I can assure you(and actually legally I would need to disclose it) that if I'm wearing some Nike gear(ext...) its not because they are sending me truck fulls of cash. No one cares about someone on youtube that does not have like 1,000,000+ subscribers. And in my book that's a good thing!
