In the reboot, she outed the new kids by telling everyone they had 2 dads, easily got over Sticky and was immediately smitten with one of those new kids, and most recently hacked Penny’s phone and got a homeless teacher fired

If they don’t redeem her character (which I actually don’t want them to) they need Penny to get her out of the friend group. It could be a good lesson to kids or at least just teach her a lesson and make her character improve… SOMETHING

She's equally bad in the reboot, if not worse. Currently up to the episode "raging bully" she's done things such as out a gay couple after being told not to by penny, sold out her teacher's bad living situation, and didn't even stick up for penny when she was kicked from the dance/singing group they formed in the original show. She's been nothing but a hinderance to the group, even saying its completely okay her siblings just stole bobby's car.

@@lifeboy3253 I’ll give Dijonay some credit though. At least in Louder and Prouder, she makes an honest effort to be a better friend, and on her own initiative. She didn’t hesitate to tell LaCienega to quit stealing Kareem from Penny. In another episode, she didnt like LaCienega giving Penny crap for her new voice, and she didn’t approve of Bobby kicking Penny (his own niece) out of the band. And in the episode with Al Roker, Dijonay refused to allow Penny to stay behind in her wish-induced college reality, and she sent Oscar the contract when Penny failed to leave before the trial period ended.

As you get older you realize who your true friends are, and as far as Penny's circle is concerned the only real friends she had was Sticky and Michael who would rag on her like everyone else does, but they were never mean spirited, it was always in jest, and yeah friends do rag on eachother for fun. But her female peers are all trash.
Dijonay is disloyal and self serving, and a total stalker that we're supposed to laugh at, even though if it was the other way around, viewers would take offense to her lovesick antics.
Lacienega is stuckup, and antagonistic towards penny at every given opportunity. She has layers for sure, but it's clear she's that one financially well off friend that everyone gravitates towards for the wealth and nothing else.
Zoey is a sheep who flocks with the majority. She's a nice girl, but she's only as loyal as long as you're the winning side.
It paints a bleak picture of Penny's social life where she surrounds herself with people she has to call her friends because she doesn't have any better options, and IRL sometimes it really is like that for folks growing up, and eventually they mature and outgrow those people in their lives and find new ones.

I was very young in the early 2000s (when a lot of tween shows were already wrapping up production), but even when I was too young to actually get it, the very few times I saw it on tv, something felt VERY off - like a lot of the shows had the mean 'best friends' that the main protag hang out with for SOME reason and always getting screwed over by said 'besties', like I didn't get great vibes from it so I didn't grow up with it. Thank god too because I was easily impressionable and would had thought "guess that's how (girl) friendships worked, take all the trash they hurl at you and just deal with it!" Doesn't help that if you see today's shows and how they write their characters and the consequences they gotta face (e.g Amphibia, Gravity Falls, etc.), you kinda realise how the morals and character writing did NOT age well for shows like this 😅
Like yeah, lots of people will defend the show and say "yeah they're not meant to be flawless, it's a realistic outlook on friendship!", like in that case, I'd rather be friendless than deal with Penny's friends. Like I like flawed characters as much as the next guy, but they had all crossed the line of being unlikeable and "why should I care if they get hit by a truck?" Plus, if they want realism so badly, Penny would had eventually snapped and dumped them for good, people in real life have limits too.

Somehow, Dijonay being a horrible friend felt authentic to me. Like, teenagers really do have this proclivity towards chronic backstabbing, no matter how close they are. Lacienega felt authentic that way too. I mean, the bully/queen bee dynamic isn't as cliquey as it is in most other cartoons. Teenagers in real life will hang out and do everything together, even if they really hate each other. Yeah, Penny's squad might be ready to turn on her at a moment's notice, but as harsh and unpleasant as it comes across to us viewers, it's not totally off-base.

There's something to be said about all of Penny's friends being bad friends to some degree (even Penny herself) but Dijonay is hands down the worse of them. Lacienega was at least honest in her dislike of Penny and was never her friend, plus her family was one of the best parts of the show, but Dijonay is a bonafide backstabber.
Admittedly it does lead to funny moments and I wouldn't mind that type of character being in the main cast if the show didn't bend over backwards to justify her being in the clique throughout the series with the "friends stick together" spiel. Like give her development, get her to experience some form of consequence, or have an episode where she gets dropped by Penny permanently, something to Dijonay rather than "loud-mouthed two face".

Penny's friend circle is one of the worse I've seen in cartoons. Usually after awhile, most characters have moments of redemption or are called out for being terrible (even in adult shows), but not this show.

And even when the reboot was announced (I was very young when the og Proud Family was already wrapping up production, so I too young to really get into it, but the few times I caught it on tv, I just didn't get any great vibes), I didn't have much hope for it. Like lots of og fans that I saw would defend the show's morals and characters and be like "I don't like Penny's friends, but they're not meant to be flawless and it's REALISTIC" - like if they want realism, Penny would had snapped and dumped them, people in real life have limits too and would eventually have had enough of putting up with toxic friends and roll out.
A show like Amphibia deals with toxic friendships, and they handle infinitely better than the og proud family (I don't really hear anything better about how the reboot writes Penny's main friend group), like there are consequences for the toxic bestie and how the main protag has limits with how much she can put up with and WILL cut ties without hesitation. Plus the characters go through character growth and are actually likeable/interesting. Penny's friends are both unlikeable and "why should I care if they get hit by a truck" to me.

Personally i think Dijonay's behavior stems from being the eldest of 10 siblings, because her parents don't seem to know what a condom is or buy quality. (Seriously people condoms are the ONLY thing, THE ONLY THING, anyone should pay retail for)
Whenever she seems to stab penny in the back there is more often than not money involved in that decision. Something her folks probably don't make enough of on their own. Heck in the reboot she snitched for the perk of getting all of her siblings free lunch for when they all go to their...middle school?...high school?...they're 15 right? Shouldn't it be a highschool at this point? Hell shouldnt the cast be outta college by this point if they have call backs to events from the previous series?! Ugh i hate cartoons that do this...but my point is Dijonay has motives stemming from her parent's rabbit syndrome. Does it justify how scummy a friend she is/was because the reboot might address that? Heck no at all. Does it give her depth? Yes

  • @inkdemon6065

To me, Dijonay is the friend you had when you were five and grew up with her, but as you got to middle school you didn't like her anymore. You don't want to talk anymore but you've known her all your life and no one else will give her a shot so you feel like you have to be her friend. Or your parents are friends and you keep seeing her all the time so you feel like you HAVE to hang out or else it'll cause a problem for the families. "Go play with Dijonay sweetie, your mom and I will be with her parents talking." kind of situation.
I had that and the moment I was old enough to stay home alone I stopped seeing them. They were so rude, always interrupting, repeating what I said but louder, taking food off my plate, making fun of everything I like, etc. They couldn't imagine why I didn't like talking to them.

I know, and am okay with this!" So, in case it isn't mentioned in this video. She knows. It's all deliberate. And Penny, sadly not having better options, just accepts it in stride. Also, I vastly disagree about the Proud Family being a show with consistently good characters. Just about every major character, except Oscar and Trudy, change based on what the episode needs at the time. Penny herself is a prime example, being an honor roll student whom her parents trust completely one episode, to being a party throwing delinquent the next.

A better ending would have involved Dijonay missing the concert because Penny doesn’t go back for her. A week passes by before Penny talks to Dijonay again, and she tells her that’s she’s sick of her taking advantage of their friendship and lying to her. Penny warns Dijonay that if she pulls another stunt, then their friendship is over for real. This way, Dijonay not only would get consequences (missing the concert while everyone else had fun!), but she knows that her staying friends with Penny all depends on whether or not she works at being a better friend to her.

But I can't remember a single episode that redeems her character. She's basically Ponyhead from Star vs the forces of evil! As cool and as supportive a grandma she is to Penny, Suga Mama is a terrible mother to Oscar and Bobby (coddling him did not help much)! My guess as to why the rest of the family doesn’t call out Suga Mama for her mistreatment of Oscar is because they don’t want to deal with her when she’s mad.
Suga Mama reminds me of a character from King of the Hill. Cotton Hill was also a loving grandparent but an abusive parent to his son, Hank. Even as adults, Oscar and Hank both tried to gain their respective parent’s love and affection, but their parents constantly rejected them and refused to try and be better parents.

Honestly, looking back at the Proud Family, it really does seem like everyone is just kind of a terrible person. Like, all of Penny's friends are absolutely fake as all hell, and the show still treats them like they're family to her. Penny's loyalty and trust in people who, time and again, verbally and emotionally abuse her make her come across as willfully naiive than a girl just learning how to get through life.

The only one out of Penny's friends that was the most loyal. (And it's a low bar to meet) was Sticky. But even he came off as rude or flaky at worst.

Honestly, I despise Dijonay in the OG (Same for Zoey and Lacienega, but honesty Lacienega is my most hated). While I personally think she got somewhat better in the revival (if you haven't seen episode 4, which was terrible and felt on the nose about its aesop) I really think she needs more character development and moments when she gets called out and learns a lesson

    • @joelblake5310
      @joelblake5310 2 года назад +29

Zoey is the only one I like because she's the only one who didn't really do anything terrible to her. I mean, the worst she's done was leave her behind, but that's nothing compared to what Dijonay or LasCienega has done.
Also, episode four is genuinely a great episode because it did a good job with displaying the different reactions people can have when they find out about a same sex couple.
Aaaaaaand I'm not quite sure what Aesop has to do with this.

Speaking of which, I hope the reboot can dive into Oscar's history more. Granted, it's stated Suga Mama's harder on him due to him having a better chance than Bobby but where did she get to thinking that? Was it before or after the death her husband? And was Proud Snacks really an old family recipe Oscar learned from his dad but just has difficulty replicating it?

Kinda weird since (in the reboot) Bobby told Penny he went to college and became drum major. It’s highly unlikely Bobby’d be allowed to even audition for such a role until his 3rd year, so he clearly had good enough grades to get that far.

I'd really hope Oscar and his mom somewhat improve their relationship because that is a trait of the original that still bothers me. His own mom I don't think ever cut him slack unless it's an episode I missed.

When Dijonay abandoned Penny with not only the twins, but all of her siblings, to go to a concert, that was the tipping point for me. The fact that Penny still took her back as her friend really surprised me. Nowadays that would’ve warranted Dijonay’s character to either be written off or pushed back to secondary bc people now know we don’t have to keep our friend circles big just for the sake of saying we have friends. As a generation, we cut off family, friends, partners, even jobs that don’t work out for us to make room for bigger and better things. Maybe Penny should consider that.

Dijonay kinda reminds me of Chloe Price from Life is Strange. A unlikable fake friend who we’re supposed to like because the main character is friends with them and the main character doesn’t confront them about their bad actions.
(And before you say it, because there’s always that ONE person who says it, NO! I don’t hate Chloe because she’s LGBT, I hate Chloe because she’s a terrible person who does awful things.)

One example of the bad things she does from my memory is telling her step dad that the pot she had was Max’s pot. Didn’t even hesitate to pin the blame on her bestie. Even if you do go with it it gives the step dad something to counter her when you tell the principal about what he did earlier. Which was harassing one girl possibly thinking she was a delinquent.

It’s interesting/off putting that some shows in the 2000’s had the friends that make you wonder why the main characters hang out with them. Dijonay, Jake Spidermonkey from My Gym Partner’s a Monkey, Craig from Out of Jimmy’s Head, Gus from Robotboy, Patrick during SpongeBob’s seasonal rot. Maybe they saw Cartman from South Park be the same thing and thought they could do that too. The difference being that Cartman isn’t supposed to be in the right or rooted for most of the time and whenever he wins either Kyle or everyone else will be aware of how bad he is.
