maybe the creators of the proud family probably had friends just like dijonay growing up and the creators based her off of the friend they had during their childhood that's what i believe
Yes Oscar proud I always had some bad feelings about Oscar proud he’s a useless father like I said in a comment he never does anything right for him and for his family He is a typical mama boy 👦🏾When sugar mama is around him all the time and he doesn’t even know how to punish his own child of course when he removes Penny proud’s phone sugar mama the grandmother she intervenes so she should’ve stayed in her place as a grandmother
Being a brown/darkskinned woman myself. You spoke nothing but facts. Black women get stereotype no matter the complexion but us darkskinned women get it the worse. I have learned just to deal with ignorance of the darkskinned woman stereotype and not let it get to me anymore.
So true. I've seen it in real time growing up even now on social media. Proud Family was a fun show to watch as a kid, but now as an adult I see how problematic it was. I know how multi faceted black women really are
@@weeping.angel27 it is fine I promise you I don't even let it bother me anymore. I love my melanin ❤️❤️❤️ Some people are just going to be ignorant regardless of your skin complexion.
As a dark skinned girl who’s only 18 im already exhausted of the stereotypes I’ve seen of us. I’ve been bullied for not being the stereotype, being alt, skinny, & even being told I’m whitewashed & an “Oreo” bc of my voice & the guys I date. I am SO tired of people not understanding that black girls are not a monolith, we are not all the same. We are not all loud, obese, ratchet, & mean. I was bullied by girls like Dijonay most of my life & it still happens to this day. I remember I got called a wannabe white girl for being attracted to rodrick from diary of a wimpy kid. These stereotypes are so ridiculous
Black alt girls are awesome! My BFF is one and she’s the sweetest and most person caring person I could have ever met. Btw I looked at your channel and your PFP and it’s awesome, you are a subliminal maker and shifter too? Wow and I love your Leon Kennedy picture I feel kinda awkward just barging in like this hope you don’t mind
Im almost 19 and I been through the same things. Like even some girl said that I don’t act like a black person because of the way I talk, look, and act. Like dawg sorry I’m not loud and mean I just like to be a nice quiet person who likes anime and drawing. I don’t like twerking and hell I really hate doing my hair ever since I was a kid but I have to anyways. Also I’m alt too and I got bullied for that by others and even by my own mom all because we’re supposed to act like black people 💀
I'd say that there's no issue with such character existing if people like this exists. Bigger issue is that she never improves, grows, learns anything. Never becomes a better friend. THAT'S my issue.
See now, people like Dijonay do exist, but the difference between them is that those people have nuances and are not just a sum of all of their contentious traits. I've always said Dijonay is not a character, she's a caricature.
@@BurningQuestion It depends on what they're a caricature of, in my opinion. Some depictions can be tone deaf or tactless and Dijonay's portrayal is definitely one of them. Which is a shame, they have a golden opportunity to humanize this type of black girl character (big personality, speaks ebonics, comes from a really big family with not the best parents) that's so often held in contempt or to silly racially charged respectability politics. Instead they play into those very tropes as a means of laughing at her, rather than with her.
Flat characters do have a purpose in narrative, though. Especially because she’s a secondary character as well. That’s not really unusual or remarkable
Dijonay being named Delinquenetta in the pilot kinda solidifies how she was created to be a direct contrast to Penny. Penny is a middle class Black girl who's friendly and outgoing with a strong moral compass while being raised by supportive yet stern, parents that are little conservative. On the other hand, Dijonay is also outgoing but an obnoxious gossip who had no qualms with betraying people for her own personal gain. I like think that her behavior is tied to her upbringing. She's growing up in a crammed, overcrowded household with younger siblings. She definitely has to compete for her parents attention. But since she's Penny's foil, that aspect of her life is written to be comedic and unfavorable.
What grinds my gears is that she had SO much potential! She grew up in a house with several other kids, (I can relate) it would've meant that much *more* for her to have enrolled on college, and maybe majored in English or literature, and actually turn out to be very well read! And maybe even take up poetry or social work given her background with the poetry slam and the 3rd story episodes!! I get it you want representation, but Dijonay really truly deserved to shine! Hell, she could've even been a grief counselor since sticky is no longer in the crew. That would've been a great highlight! To have her be "boy crazy" as a pre-teen, and then she matures to help other young ladies realize that there's more to life than boys!? You can't tell me that wouldn't have been interesting. I was genuinely excited for her redesign as well, but. . . .they did her dirty. Plain and simple. 😔
That definitely would be interesting I mean there still 14 in the show but had the bumped them to h.s I could see this working it would make more sense.... But we always have to have at least one stereotype 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️
She wasn’t written to be a character/person who *deserves* ANYTHING. She was a selfish self-serving person, a bad friend and aggressive disregarded other’s autonomy. But her not deserving anything makes it actually sadder that she was written to be so underserving
I have no words to express the happiness that you as a black man see this colorism in media and are talking about it. Usually it feels like only us darkskinned woman notice how they depict us with these tropes if they even depict us as main characters at all. I remember slowly realizing as a kid that usually the girl in the story who finds love doesn't have skin as dark as mine. The episode on colorism was so disappointing cause it could've touched on it but it just dropped the ball. Also glad Kiwi decided to join the video, she's adorable!
I knew some couples who wanted to name their child after a relative but also let the child have a unique name. I thought this was the case with Dijonay. Like maybe their was an aunt or grandmother called Dee or Deidra, an uncle or grandfather called Jason and an uncle or grand father called Nathan. Either that or it was an uncommon French girl's name. Dijonay always came across to me as sounding French.
It's in Dijonay's character design to spark a conversation about colourism in show - she has striaight blond hair - I'm assuming either a weave or from chemicals. It would make for an interesting episode to explore why she has this style because there are lots of levels to this conversation.
As much as I love the Proud Family, I hate the stereotypes of dark-skinned females. Not every one of them act like Dijonay. Plus, she, along with the others, were fake friends. Sometimes, I feel like they made Dijonay rachet just for Penny to look better in a way. Can you do LaCienaga next?
I got bullied by girls like Dijonay and they were awful. Thats one reason I honestly hate this show, from what ive seen of it, its full of mean spirited characters.
@@stardustpink7915 I'm sorry you had to go through that, hun. They were probably jealous because you were quiet and had class. The same sh!t happened to me as well when I was younger.
@@weeping.angel27 thanks for the kind words. Sorry you had such experiences too so yeah, you can understand how annoying they are? Bullies come in all shapes and sizes and i agree, people like this? There small and nasty and not worth it? No one REALLY likes them most are just scared of them if anything. And when you get older you can choose not to interact. People like this are NOTHING 🙂 Id rather be a nice person than a mean empty bully.
@@stardustpink7915 same here. I used to do anything to try to keep them as friends since they would always tell me I had "too many white friends" even though I was friends with anyone regardless of race and "didn't act black enough". Now that I'm older, I realize how toxic people like that are and idgaf how people view me. I'm happy just being myself. I'm so sorry you had to deal with bullies too. Know you're better than them and that they were simply just hating ^^
"some" 😂😂😂🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️ that's all she hung around with.... I didn't realize that until I got older but none of them were actually true good friends...
@@nenep1872 Exactly!!! She should’ve dumped all of them!! The reboot should have been about her finding herself and maybe getting better friends later down the line!!
And I be so sick of the sterotype! Thats why I love actresses like Nia Long, Gabrielle Union and Sanaa Lathan. They are beautiful black women that show you don’t have to be ratchet and loud to get people to pay attention to you.
I got bullied by girls like Dijonay, they were awful. Honestly i hate this show from what ive seen its full of mean spirited people especially her fake friends, again, bad memories of girls like that all through school.
I was also bullied by girls like her, but when you say that it’s self-hate and you hate being black. These same girls and their mothers love to say this now when you try to hold them accountable. I have bad memories too, don't let anyone gaslight you either because that's would they love to do. Nothing is internalized or trauma dump, just be the best you!
@@Y2KFroggyAngel im not black though im white. So its not a question of self hate to be fair. Though yer right people do pull certain cards to justify rude behaviour
I've met girls like Dijonay. I've been bullied, teased, and occasionally envied them for their seemingly confident behavior, appearance, and how carefree they seemed to be. I was introverted, skinny, and trying to fit in, but even then I knew that how they act was a stereotype of dark skinned girls and women. And stereotypes can be good, bad, and both because it depends on how it's used. Dijonay, more characters, and real life people are the reasons why in my stories, dark skinned women are the protagonist, and they're the opposite of what those women are. However, I incorporate girls and women like them as well as stereotypes from other races, ethnicities, gender, etc to show that everyone is different. I add depth to them because as humans we're not perfect and we have reasons, experiences, beliefs, morals, etc to explain why.
It’s important to realize that these girls may act this way because they don’t know how to process the trauma that they have faced as a dark skin bw. No one gives them a chance or a voice, and they feel like the best way to be heard is to act out
@@luckyduck_. That is true, and there were girls who acted out because they weren't heard. But there was also girls who acted out just to act out without any trauma or reason. The best option, and hopefully it's something the entire world can choose to do one day is not judge, discriminate, and/or hold prejudice against dark skinned people, particularly the women, by their skin tone, but their character. One person should never be a representation for an entire group of people.
@@jessicaa.8471 for sure. Def wasn’t disputing the fact that sometimes they’ll act out for no reason. Or the fact that trauma is not an excuse to treat anyone that way either. And yes I really hope so, but I will have to say that we okay a role in that as well. Our representation in the media hasn’t been the best, and it saddens me that bw support it. If we don’t carry ourselves a certain why would anyone care to respect us?
@@luckyduck_. I hundred percent agree with you. I know people can't help how they react, but I wished they could do it in an opposite manner, but I also wished we shouldn't have to hold our emotions for reacting in a way that's very human. Other races, primarily the Caucasian and people who are closer to Eurocentric beauty and are favored for their light features (like Latino women, who have often have a quarter of black and identify as such despite their phenotype) can act entitled and/or show their anger, or anything that would have us further into the negative light and people would dismiss it, even make excuses for it. It's such a toxic cycle, and I truly hope and do actions for a balance in the world.
@@TonyTurner and i think in the series she continues to _loudly_ point it out like "OH YEAH SHE GOT 2 DADDIES!" or "YEAH SHE WAS ADOPTED BY TWO DUDES!"
The Proud Family will always mean a lot to me since I practically grew up watching it. But as one becomes older, the more you look at things like geez that was problematic. I wonder if writers know or did not know people can analyze things and characters with a new perspective. The Proud family sadly falls victim to tv shows/movies of the 90s/00s of colorism and negative stereotypes towards Black people. It’s not different with Dijonay. Dijonay was portrayed as the loud, ghetto, and some may argue ratchet friend of Penny. None of the guys wanted including Sticky because she was too “Black”. To me, I felt like Penny didn’t come to Dijonay’s offense in some instances. Glad that you’re discussing this.
And then people want to act confused when Black people say we want more positive black representation in Animation and media on general. Proud Family was one of the main if not only Black animated family series at its time, and yet there's still harmful stereotypes in the show. And this was created by Black people as well, that should say something.
the only thing I didn't like about Dijonay is how she treated her friends, especially Penny, sure she was loud and bombastic but honestly I liked the energy she had a go get em attitude and she loved herself despite not being stereotypically pretty she had confidence and that is admirable but her backstabbing and undermining is what I did not like about her
Same ✨ I never thought of her ratchet-ness as problematic. Art reflects real life and all that stuff. There are people out there like that. (She's problematic because she's a bad friend.) I've honestly known ratchet girls who were WAY more problematic than Dijonay. I distinctly remember a girl in middle school who was a total jerk, and when someone called her out on it, her response was: "I'm Black! Whatcha expect?" (If I wasn't the Quiet Kid, I would have said: "Being Black doesn't give you permission to be a jerk.")
The way you woke up today and chose to speak only FACTS 👏 this articulates everything I felt about dijonay. I never understood why they were even friends with her. She’s a terrible friend.
when i was a kid i always thought the stereotypes in this show were done on purpose to satirize the tropes, because Dijonay Terrible Friend Jones definitely wasn't the only character on the show who was a stereotype (think of the Chang Triplets, Gross Sisters, heck even Zoey aka the Becky of the group) that doesn't mean it isn't harmful, but i'm just saying like that is how i interpreted it as a kid..
So 2 things i agree with you ..; This a stereotype and a annoying one but in the same time its a reality for some girls , why?? Because Black people identify as this stereotype , thinking of this as empowerement, its culture or as a "Slay queen" or "Bad bitch". We as Black people try to identify at that and think you have to be proud of that.. No, absolutely not . Being a powerful man or woman doesn't mean being loud , impulsive or act weirdly. I have the impression that because its a shameful stereotype... some people try to embrace it to be more Black. Dijonay Jones is a bad person ( she is hypocrite, jealous, bad friend) but its not about her color or her upbringing , its just Her. We have dont have to identify to this type of person. People who make this show treat Dijonay like an annoyance but never try to improve because for them she is perfect as she is ... she is never punished and for them its normal , for black girls to acted like that.
3:25 countless. I can’t count how many Dijonays I knew from kindergarten to high school senior. Hell, I was bullied by Dijonays time from time. Even after I graduated, they can be seen at gatherings and grocery stores. I can absolutely believe that her character was drawn from real life.
yeah, people really need to understand - stereotypes arent born out of nowhere, these people exist. Their existence is what birthed the stereotype in the first place
I always disliked Dijonay because she was such a toxic friend, coming across your video made me learn and be aware of this stereotype and I can see Dijonay fitting it, hopefully the writers will take a new lane for her.
You hit the nail on the coffin, Dijonay is based on a sterotype, which everyone knows someone to actually be like. It would be nice to have a character with similar dark tones and background make different choices, for contrast. Sterotypes and exspys are just comfort / lazy writting and people have come to expect or even want such characters. When writting those characters however there should be just as many other characters that go against that sterotype. Sterotypes are real, but that doesn;t mean everyone sterotyped is eactly like their cartoon version
Nothing but facts tony‼️ I remember a post a while back on Twitter that said Dijonay was a Disney school thot which bothered me because she is a teenager and sure in the original she was always so desperate for attention from sticky and not only she have this problem but some black female cartoon is always ghetto or the buddy support for the main character that includes some black male characters too .. but Dijonay also have a her better moment she talented she loves poetry and the real good on the debate team she now has a boyfriend now hopefully we see her character grow more in louder and prouder more ...
As a kid, I always thought of her attitude as just funny, played for comedic effect. These days, I've realized how much of a bad friend Dijonay is. The stereotype doesn't bother me because I know and meet plenty of people with similar attitudes. Not exactly a stereotype when it's true. Literally grew up around it. My problem is how almost the entire cast of friends are terrible people and friends who would backstab one-another for the most selfish or petty reason and it's just played for a joke or hype up drama. Made it worst in the new show. Dijonay seems even worse than before.
Okay, I know I shouldn't say anything or stay out of this... But, ALL of Penny's friends (except Zoey) are awful. As someone who grew up watching the original version, I still wonder why they're friends with Penny. 1.) LaCienega: She's been nothing but mean and hateful towards Penny (ever since her debut) when nobody's around; the only time we've ever seen her being nice to Penny was whenever Penny's friends (or in this case "friends") and family are in the same room (or the same screen) with them. 2.) Dijonay: If you had a friend that would ditch you just so they could go out and party while you're babysitting their hectic siblings, would out someone (or their relatives) on social media), insult someone that you care about due to their appearance, and then ask you "Hey, we're still friends, right?", would you still be friends with that person while pretending that their behavior is okay (REGARDLESS of skin color)? 3.) Maya: Okay, I know why Maya was so defensive, but Penny said "Hey, welcome to the neighborhood!" and she tried everything to be friendly and welcoming to her (even chewing Dijonay for outing her dads on social media). But, she just treated Penny like they got a history against each other. Also, does anyone remember Penny's "friends" hating Zoey for dating someone who was rumored to have a type? If it was rumored that he only dates Asians, they would hate the Chang triplets. If it was rumored that he only dates men, then you KNOW that Dijonay would out him on social media. If it was rumored that he only dates Hispanic women, then Lacienega would get hated for it. Speaking of Sticky, if he EVER treated Dijonay like how she's treated him, everyone would treat him like he's a womanizing pervert who's about 2 seconds from getting maced in the face for planting his lips all over her WITHOUT her consent.
I used to like her as a kid. I liked how she chased sticky around. It looked like fun. But yeah, she was terrible as a person. Especially in the new series. Everyone's gotten worse. But Dijonay is definitely showing her true colors. In the end of innocence, she ditches her boyfriend for a light skinned celebrity. Then the show has the balls to claim he's colorist.
Well said brother! I found Dijonay as a character to be irritating and disappointing. They intentionally kept her as the ghetto stereotype when she could be so much more. I’m light skinned and that “colorism” episode was a missed opportunity to actually discuss colorism like you said.
Dijonay is just one of those characters who makes you wonder why the main character, Penny, is still friends with her despite all of the bulls**t she along with the rest of Penny’s “friends” put her through. I mean, when has there been an episode where Penny’s “friends” actually stood up for her instead of leaving her to deal with whatever conflict the episodes have for her while they go and save their selfish assess. I know Mr. Proud can be an ass at times when it comes to Penny going out with some guy, but at least he’s trying to make sure she doesn’t date some asshole who ends up cheating on her, or a delinquent bad boy who doesn’t play by anyone’s rules but his own. But Penny’s “friends”, they don’t give a rat’s ass about Penny’s welfare and safety.
Great video! Dijonay is a BEAUTIFUL character period!!! I found it always irritated of how she's portrayed in the series. She's BEEN a versatile character.......but the film makers dropped the ball with her from the jump. I remember watching the show as a child. Her personality is bubbly, humor, and down to earth. The damn film makers will show those characteristics to a bare minimum. Plus, her natural beauty as a darkskin black woman is important. Her blonde hair threw me off sometimes.......it's not VIBRANT with highlights. She DESERVES better period!!! She's always getting on Sticky's nerves. Lol!!! Yes so many things you said are well put together! Keep up the amazing work!!!
Something else that stands out to me is how little sympathy Dijonnqy seems to get with her living situation. Like the fact that she sold out the teacher in order to get her and all her siblings lunch debt cancelled feels like something maya or penny should have picked up on. But because of all the unlikeable/terrible things she does, if flies under the radar
Though I found it funny when I was younger, it’s kinda discouraging that even in the reboot she’s just the comedic relief and given the least amount of nuance out of the friend group. I hope they expand on her relationship with her siblings because in some instances, she does show to care about them. I did catch that they tend to exaggerate features of the dark skinned characters to make them goofy-looking or unappealing (Dijonay, Oscar, Suga Mama, etc.). Also the addition of Maya just add to the negative stereotypes of dark skinned girls with her being a sjw. She didn’t have much of a character outside of that trope until the last episode of the previous season.
Never understood fake 'friends' like those, that just want someone around to make them look better or to mock in that way of showinf off they're better at something than them. :( I always get so happy and excited when I see my friends having a talent, especially when it's art and love to eagerly show it off on my blogs! (With their permission, ofc!) It's so much fun to have a friend to do art trades with, and engage in fun hobbies with! Like... Why wouldn't you be so excited that this person you love and treasure has an awesome hobby/talent that makes them happy?? Why in the world would you be jealous of that? Don't think I'll ever understand it.
Weirdly I have met plenty of Dijonay in real life, but granted being white myself in a mixed neighborhood. I am not colored myself and didn't grow up in a monoculture, so I can't speak much for it. I have met colored people in the ghetto that I have befriended, and the worst personality trait that I could stereotype is maybe petty. Like aggressively jealous. That's not a diss, but just if I was forced to think of a stereotype. But yeah! I have met "Dijonay" type people in real life! I went to public school and there were kids named things like "Dorito" and "Cola". They were cute kids, but extremely hyper like Dijonay's siblings. I have never befriended a "Dijonay". If Dijonay were the term for a stereotype. They were always that one girl in school that was rude and aggressive. Her income had nothing to do with it, her skin color had nothing to do with it. It's just that type of girl that is obsessed with beauty and boys, and cares not for anything else. They indeed exist. I think the term for it is "Superficial" or something like that. Boys can also fall into this category as well. Boys obsessed with beauty and girls.
I'm not super far in the video, but I just wanna say that Dijonay was always my favorite character. I'm not saying she's a good person, she definitely fell short in terms of being a good friend. But I liked her a lot. She was funny, had quick wit, and knew what she wanted in a situation and I admired that about her... Despite the overplayed stereotype which I now 100% recognize as an adult. Definitely need to give The Proud Family another watch now that I'm older. Anyway, back to the video. *EDIT: I agree so much with you. I hope they add more to her character! I really hope they explore why she has been messy. Like, I know I did some... Questionable things as a kid because I didn't receive as much care/attention had my brother (who is autistic)... Real anecdotal I suppose. But it's established she has many siblings, so I don't know if that would be a positive way to go with it or not. But again, I hope they expand her depth because she's a good *character*.
Honestly. Also can we just talk about her design as well? I get that maybe her being chubby is probably meant to be a reflection on how a lot of black woman do have that kind of bodytype, or just the fact that I presume at least that Dijonay is more poor than the others on account of having like 9 siblings, same with her clothes, but it's like they don't even try to make her look good. Idk, the fact that her stomach is just sticking out, it almost feels like they're trying to draw attention to it. And her hairstyle is just the worst, like couldn't they have given her just a normal ponytail or something? The colour is god awful as well. I feel like Glimmer from Shera for instance, does a better job at designing that kind of character. Also just... The fact that she's the one in the main cast who's 'ratchet' and is also coincidentally the only one who's not super skinny like the rest of the main cast, yeah that is not a great message...
I think Dijonay could be a good character if she felt more like a real person. Yes, we've all known a Dijonay sort of person, but all too often Dijonay doesn't act the way a person acts. People have reasons for doing what they do and Dijonay has some backstory to explain why she's the way she is... but sometimes she just does the stereotypical ghetto thing because it's the stereotypical ghetto thing to do. I also feel like Dijonay is in no-man's land as a character. I think she could work if she was a girl Penny knew from school, but wasn't close with. She could be an antagonist like the gross sisters and we could explore her character a bit, but she's not a main character, so being a comedic over the top character is more palatable. The other option is that Dijonay IS Penny's friend, but she has more positive qualities. Make it clear why Penny spends time with Dijonay. Make it clear that Dijonay is flawed, but she has some deep good qualities that come out when Penny needs her most.
Idk man, I have more memories of darkskinned girls in midia being A type students, popular girls, than the ratched girl I do know this is a conversation the Black community have, and I think we need to have this conversation, but I swear I do remember a more variety of dark skinned female characters, that isn't just the stereotype of Dijonay And I honestly don't know why we don't talk more about those variations
i dunno how she did it but dijonay somehow made the dark skin + blonde hair character design combo NOT look like the coolest thing ever to me as a little black girl.
I love watching your cat being silly and cute all over the background of your videos , every time the video cuts back to you I’m always looking for where the cat is haha
There's a reason stereotypes become stereotypes. Growing up I've been to schools on both sides of the communities and all I can say is I've seen it first hand. The schools where it was predominantly white there were also black kids but they never acted like that they were respectful and I even felt welcomed by them since I was new. But on the other side the school that was predominantly black this character wasn't the stereotype she was the standard. I remember everyday the same group of girls would harrass and interrupt the teachers for no reason other than antagonize them. I clearly remember one jumping on the desks and tweaking before tweaking was a thing. Everything dijanae portrayed in the show was the reality I went through when I went to school. Even how she constantly harassed sticky. I can relate to him cause I had 2 of them constantly harrassing me despite me telling them I had no interest in them.
what I would do for a colorism episode is take what I say with a grain of salt cause I am a white woman, is have the girls get a group photo by a professional photographer only to find out he or she photoshop them to have lighter skin color than they actually have and make Dijonay look skinner and guys at school seeing her picture as light skin and thin woman and thinking cute and pretty she is not knowing it was Dijonay feeling insecure cause that's not how she actually looks and her friends reassuring that she's beautiful the way she is and boyfriend telling her he fell in love with the real her, not the fake photoshop her, and then girls get the photographer exposed and fired or he or she learn their lesson and doesn't photoshop to look like something they're not anymore. I think that might be way less divisive than the colorsim episode we got cause people weren't happy the girls turned on each other especially ganging up on Zoey when it was Noah who was at fault. or if they wanted to ad a dating aspect have Dijoney boyfriend's Darrius talk to a light skin black girl and Dijoney feeling like Darrius prefers her and think he's cheating only for the trope of oh they were actually cousins so Dijoney had nothing to worry about but you know that's just my thought on how they could have handled it. just don't have the girls fight each other over a stupid boy
Awww, seeing old Proud Family Reminds me of Visiting my Aunt in the Bronx NYC and watching Disney Channel on a CRT TV. Even reminds me of coming back from school and watching Proud Family at night in our living room on a larger CRT TV. …& i’m just watching it until a new series debuts next.
Man. Im excited to see this. I had no interest with the reboot when Bruce was basically like: "i dont care". But dont disregard how the other (big air quotes) "poc" writers animators and character designers where able to go off and change the Asian and Hispanic characters, getting better reputation with thier main characters. But no peep about dijionay and her family who they all have worked on.......
Yes it's all true like it's the same old stuff with penny alway getting set up by her friends.then when Stinky left or moved from the show , in his head said thank god I'm outta hear . Don't have to see dijonay again😅
Your channel just randomly appeared on my feed and i really enjoy your voice a lot! So soothing to listen to!! Great vid! Can't wait to watch more videos :3
The thing is. They could have made her ghetto but likable. They could have made her a ghetto from circumstance (aka she's from the hood and she doesn't get much attention because she's taking care of all of her siblings.) ghetto characters aren't bad if you make then well rounded.
I have no opinions on the stereotype part but those who claim Dijonay is stereotypical because she is a bad friend really isn’t a good reason because the whole gang is filled with awful friends. Dijonay is always sassing Penny, Laci whatever her name is always trying to rival Penny, and Zoey is quick to switch sides to the point of a simple breeze can knock her to which side she is.
Penny and Dijonay both have boyfriends so their getting jealous over Noah liking Zoey seems very hypocritical of them only one that made sense to get jealous of Noah liking Zoey was LaCienega and she's not even black and Maya the other dark skin girl in the group didn't give a shit but still cause trouble pointing out Noah's preference to white girls and didn't care that it could or would break up the friend group the only one that stood up for Zoey was Penny but Maya was like 'we girls have to stick together" and all I can think Maya you started this. but it's kind of funny in a way Joey ended up dumping Noah and getting with Myron who has darker skin color than Noah, but I can't help but think the show saying Joey can only be with a guy if he's an awkward 'nerd/geek' like she is if not more. that anyone who seems as cool and popular likes her then it's for superficial reasons like the color of her skin. and Maya ended up with Billy Chang so that's probably why Maya wasn't interested in Noah though celebrities are probably not her type and LaCienga is the only one in the friend group that is still single
They really do be gettin mad when your not the loud ghetto mean stereotype. Ive literally been told im not grown because i dont wear weave.. like what? Dont get wrong i love all the different styles of wigs/weaves but I like to wear my natural hair. Its easier for me to maintain. They were so confused lol
I was born in 1992 so the Black woman stereotype has always been a comedic thing along with the Black man too when it comes to comedy. The same is with every other race/ethnicity too and I’m just going to say this: there’s some truth behind stereotypes for them to exist in the first place. Of course not everyone is like this and I’d argue that only 1/3 of each race/ethnicity acted like the stereotypes to a certain extent. I even knew a few Black girls and women in my life who acted like Dijonay too. That being said, I agree with what ur saying about this. I even hear a lot of Black women not liking this stereotype as it gives off a bad rep to them IRL.
I wish they would expand Dijonay and show that she's more than a stereotype. Show she has real interests, and acknowledges she isn't always a good friend. Let her be something else than a stereotype
Imma be honest i never noticed. Theres a lot of dijonay’s around me in real like. (Before anyone ask. Im a 20 year old dark skin black girl who went to public school in a bad area.) I generally thought it was just representation of our lives the good and bad. Not all dark skin girls are a ghetto stereotype but some are.
I especially hate how she just sexually harasses boys, even when they repeatedly say no. Gender equality should mean that women also should not harass men… but Disney I guess doesn’t give a shit
I watched this show when i was younger and in my mind, i never understood why Penny was friends with any of them, especially Dijonay and La Cienega. Not to say though Penny was a Saint, she had some bad instances too but it seemed her friends were pretty horrible. Imo, the Gross Sisters were much better friends, but I didnt like how the show seemed to go out of its way to villify them in some ways, even though they didnt deserve it.
I feel this would work IF the show gave her character development over time and treated her as a duality to other black characters in a tasteful way. Something like how they used the little brother from The Boondocks could work, again, as a duality to other characters within their culture. Now, I’m not aware much of black culture, but as a Mexican, I’ve seen certain stereotypes of our culture in TV that is too true to life. I believe stereotype characters, if used properly, can be used as a way to show young kids certain stuffs from their culture is weird or downright toxic. That being said, the fact that this particular character still acts the same in the reboot is just, if nothing else, lazy writing.
I mean I guess she could be seen as a stereotype. However some of us grew up with a friend or family member who was like her. I had a friend in high who acted the same way as her, the only difference my friend was Mexican.
I am a little biased, but I genuinely do believe the director is just showing real life through brown characters to a lesser degree than the Boondocks. Yes, I do wish they would touch on topics better. I simply think that the charm of the show is how imperfect all the characters are even Penny. I just hope Dijonay gets a real background episode
Considering how they reacted to someone who did their own variation of her thats less colorist and how they reacted to being called out on their colorism with her character as well as their takes, its not that, the directors are just colorist sadly.
What messages do yall think the Proud Family creators were trying to portray through Dijonay's character?
tony can you make a video about oscar proud next please

Being a brown/darkskinned woman myself. You spoke nothing but facts. Black women get stereotype no matter the complexion but us darkskinned women get it the worse. I have learned just to deal with ignorance of the darkskinned woman stereotype and not let it get to me anymore.
So sorry you go through that
So true. I've seen it in real time growing up even now on social media. Proud Family was a fun show to watch as a kid, but now as an adult I see how problematic it was. I know how multi faceted black women really are

I don’t like twerking and hell I really hate doing my hair ever since I was a kid but I have to anyways. I'd say that there's no issue with such character existing if people like this exists. Bigger issue is that she never improves, grows, learns anything. Never becomes a better friend. THAT'S my issue.
EXACTLY ‼
See now, people like Dijonay do exist, but the difference between them is that those people have nuances and are not just a sum of all of their contentious traits. I've always said Dijonay is not a character, she's a caricature.
@@EverTheAnnihilator Personally, I don't have an issue witch caricature characters unless they're just a common norm in media.

Delinquenetta is monstrous
True. Some characters are just written to be bad.
I wish they would've used her home life to write her character with something idk
Right ‼ Like take what they did in the original series and build upon that for the reboot. In some ways, they made her worst 😳
That college episode really did her dirty
I have no words to express the happiness that you as a black man see this colorism in media and are talking about it. Usually it feels like only us darkskinned woman notice how they depict us with these tropes if they even depict us as main characters at all. I remember slowly realizing as a kid that usually the girl in the story who finds love doesn't have skin as dark as mine. The episode on colorism was so disappointing cause it could've touched on it but it just dropped the ball. Also glad Kiwi decided to join the video, she's adorable!
Thank You so much ‼

I remembered that her siblings were named after spices but always thought Dijonay was just different 😭
@@misspinkpunkykatI mean, Dijon is a French word
I went to school with a boy named Dajon, guess his race 🤔stereotypes come from somewhere 🤷♀️
Yes, they made Dijonay a complete exaggerated contrast to Penny to highlight her as the protagonist. LaCienaga is coming up ‼👌🏾

I can relate to this on a spiritual level.

Agree‼ Penny had her flaws as well, but Dijonay was always highlighted to be the most problematic one
Even without the obvious racism and colorism this show is just mean
Zoey's fake too! She'd sometimes call penny a nerd (in a negative way) knowing she's one herself
To be fair, can you blame Penny for not coming to Dijonay’s defence based on how Dijonay acts?
And then people want to act confused when Black people say we want more positive black representation in Animation and media on general. Proud Family was one of the main if not only Black animated family series at its time, and yet there's still harmful stereotypes in the show. And this was created by Black people as well, that should say something.
What about "little Bill"?
They are literally helping to spread the hate and even racist stereotypes
@@autumnight143 Not all, only some
the only thing I didn't like about Dijonay is how she treated her friends, especially Penny, sure she was loud and bombastic but honestly I liked the energy she had a go get em attitude and she loved herself despite not being stereotypically pretty she had confidence and that is admirable but her backstabbing and undermining is what I did not like about her
Same ✨ I never thought of her ratchet-ness as problematic. Art reflects real life and all that stuff. There are people out there like that. (She's problematic because she's a bad friend.)
I've honestly known ratchet girls who were WAY more problematic than Dijonay.

Issue with Dijonay is nobody actually calls her out either. She gets away with shit all the time, no repercussions.
@jonelrobinson5189 or SOMEBODY other then Sticky.
when i was a kid i always thought the stereotypes in this show were done on purpose to satirize the tropes, because Dijonay Terrible Friend Jones definitely wasn't the only character on the show who was a stereotype (think of the Chang Triplets, Gross Sisters, heck even Zoey aka the Becky of the group)
that doesn't mean it isn't harmful, but i'm just saying like that is how i interpreted it as a kid..
Right ‼
Nothing but facts tony‼️ I remember a post a while back on Twitter that said Dijonay was a Disney school thot which bothered me because she is a teenager and sure in the original she was always so desperate for attention from sticky and not only she have this problem but some black female cartoon is always ghetto or the buddy support for the main character that includes some black male characters too .. but Dijonay also have a her better moment she talented she loves poetry and the real good on the debate team she now has a boyfriend now hopefully we see her character grow more in louder and prouder more ...
Exactly‼
As a kid, I always thought of her attitude as just funny, played for comedic effect. These days, I've realized how much of a bad friend Dijonay is. The stereotype doesn't bother me because I know and meet plenty of people with similar attitudes. Not exactly a stereotype when it's true. Literally grew up around it.
My problem is how almost the entire cast of friends are terrible people and friends who would backstab one-another for the most selfish or petty reason and it's just played for a joke or hype up drama. Made it worst in the new show. Dijonay seems even worse than before.
3:16 THEY KNEW WHAT THEY WAS DOING
Yup‼
Okay, I know I shouldn't say anything or stay out of this...
But, ALL of Penny's friends (except Zoey) are awful.
As someone who grew up watching the original version, I still wonder why they're friends with Penny.
1.) LaCienega:
She's been nothing but mean and hateful towards Penny (ever since her debut) when nobody's around; the only time we've ever seen her being nice to Penny was whenever Penny's friends (or in this case "friends") and family are in the same room (or the same screen) with them.
2.) Dijonay:
If you had a friend that would ditch you just so they could go out and party while you're babysitting their hectic siblings, would out someone (or their relatives) on social media), insult someone that you care about due to their appearance, and then ask you "Hey, we're still friends, right?", would you still be friends with that person while pretending that their behavior is okay (REGARDLESS of skin color)?
3.) Maya:
Okay, I know why Maya was so defensive, but Penny said "Hey, welcome to the neighborhood!" and she tried everything to be friendly and welcoming to her (even chewing Dijonay for outing her dads on social media).
True, but Zoey had some crappy moments too and would always go along with what Penny's "friends" would do. Regardless if it was ethical or not.
Lacienega has openly insulted Penny while her friends are around.
Zoey was fake too 😭😂
Yeah, Zoey was a follower
I used to like her as a kid. I liked how she chased sticky around. It looked like fun.
But yeah, she was terrible as a person. Especially in the new series. Everyone's gotten worse. But Dijonay is definitely showing her true colors. In the end of innocence, she ditches her boyfriend for a light skinned celebrity. Then the show has the balls to claim he's colorist.
‼‼‼
Well said brother! I found Dijonay as a character to be irritating and disappointing. They intentionally kept her as the ghetto stereotype when she could be so much more. I’m light skinned and that “colorism” episode was a missed opportunity to actually discuss colorism like you said.
Dijonay was a trash friend😭
Straight city dump trash ‼😅
Thank You ‼ Dijonay did have great and funny moments on the show, but they always overdid it with her character

Your cat is so freaking cute! I'm sure they enjoyed front row seats/tables to the show!
Karen M. White and Paula Jai have perfect voices for acting.
They do‼ I've always loved their voice acting on the show. Kyla Pratt's too
Weirdly I have met plenty of Dijonay in real life, but granted being white myself in a mixed neighborhood.
When you look back at it, The Proud Family was almost basically the animated version of Moesha.
Yup ‼ Especially since one of the creators worked on both shows
The cat be like: yeah I be chilling.
Anyways, this is a very good video, about how you analyzed her character.
Thank You ‼😹
Me growing up in Detroit where 9 girls out of 10 are exactly like Dijonay, I still understand that it is a stereotype.
Idk man, I have more memories of darkskinned girls in midia being A type students, popular girls, than the ratched girl
I do know this is a conversation the Black community have, and I think we need to have this conversation, but I swear I do remember a more variety of dark skinned female characters, that isn't just the stereotype of Dijonay
And I honestly don't know why we don't talk more about those variations
She's the type of person everyone should avoid of having as a friend
Straight up spitting facts for 13 minutes 💯❤️
Thank You ‼👏🏿
Immediatly love your personality and your friend Kiwi! So cute lol
Thank You ‼
the cat in the back slaying
8:28 I don't know who or what she was smiling at, but I fear for their safety.
Girls like this genuinely exist, let's be honest with ourselves. Biggest question is why penny puts up with her. There's no redeeming qualities.
The kitty at the beginning - ❤
With "friends" like Dijonay, who the hell needs enemies, right?
i dunno how she did it but dijonay somehow made the dark skin + blonde hair character design combo NOT look like the coolest thing ever to me as a little black girl.
I love watching your cat being silly and cute all over the background of your videos , every time the video cuts back to you I’m always looking for where the cat is haha
She be all behind the camera or the floor most of the time 😹
There's a reason stereotypes become stereotypes.
I'm really enjoying these deep dives!
Thank You ‼
I’m a stereotype…
White Dominican Mom, Black Dominican Dad.
…we’re mixed kids.
You're my favorite youtuber ngl way too underrated
Yes it's all true like it's the same old stuff with penny alway getting set up by her friends.then when Stinky left or moved from the show , in his head said thank god I'm outta hear . Don't have to see dijonay again😅
😅😅😅
Your channel just randomly appeared on my feed and i really enjoy your voice a lot! So soothing to listen to!! Great vid! Can't wait to watch more videos :3
Thank You ‼
And her having blonde hair is crazy
This is how bad you know the stereotype is:
When I think of Dijonay, I can only think of "Ghetto" and "Eternal Skidmarks"
Bruh, she’s literally Dodie from As Told By Ginger all over again…
She is in every sense of the word. Both are total narcs.I thought Dodie was worse though
The thing is. They could have made her ghetto but likable. They could have made her a ghetto from circumstance (aka she's from the hood and she doesn't get much attention because she's taking care of all of her siblings.) ghetto characters aren't bad if you make then well rounded.
Great takes on this. Also, your cat is adorable!
Thank You ‼
Dijonay & Sticky = Nickie Parker & Oglevee. lmao
Also, Kim and Hakeem from Moesha 😅
I have no opinions on the stereotype part but those who claim Dijonay is stereotypical because she is a bad friend really isn’t a good reason because the whole gang is filled with awful friends. Dijonay is always sassing Penny, Laci whatever her name is always trying to rival Penny, and Zoey is quick to switch sides to the point of a simple breeze can knock her to which side she is.
THE CATS LIKE HIGH GUYS
Excellent video!!! I have to add Kim's character from The Parkers to this.
Yes Thank You ‼ That's a perfect comparison especially considering one of the producers created Moesha and the Parkers as well.
i also noticed her name seems to be a play on the french word for lunch, déjeuner. definitely a questionable choice for a plus sized character
It was revealed to be a play on Dijonay Mustard
Out of all Penny’s friends, Dijonay is the worst of them. Honestly, these people are not ride or die friends
I thought she was just supposed to be the typical "that one friend everyone had" character.
bro he got that mnm drip... green mnm went from high heels to low pumps." thats progress"
😅😅😅
so cool this came up recommended for me. This was often something I wondered about. Crazy.
I've met more Dijonays than Penny Prouds in my life time.
Interesting take ‼ the writers basically forced them to be friends for whatever reason
5:56 Yeah, and the Proud Family wikia also said that Dijonay uses a pillow to make her butt look bigger in that episode where Zoey gets a makeover.
I loved watching this for your commentary❤
Thank You ‼
I feel this would work IF the show gave her character development over time and treated her as a duality to other black characters in a tasteful way.
I feel like Dijonay was based on Kim Parkers character from Moesha, they made her darker and less sympathetic
Forget everything he said
4:23 CAT.
2:27 my name is actually “crazy” like nobody actually has it so I put my name online to something else bc I don’t wanna reveal it-
I never caught any of this. I could never get over how her head looked like an Onion.
Kiwi is perfect. Great video too!
Thank You ‼
