Adam Sandler's a genius, and we swear we're not joking.
Adam Sandler gets a bad rap. With a filmography that includes "Click" and "Jack and Jill" and "Little Nicky," that's honestly fair. But what if there's more to Adam Sandler than the poop jokes? What if he can tell us something about an entire generation of men? Let's find out in this Wisecrack Edition on Adam Sandler: The Triumph of the Manchild

What's the worst (and best) Sandler film?
Hard to choose a worst, there are so many bad ones in my opinion, but the best is undoubtedly Uncut Gems for me, although I also loved Punch-Drunk Love.
Uncut gems and the wedding singer (best), worst is hard but im going to have to go with jack and jill.
I don't know if are the best, but I know I like 'pixels' a lot!
Without a doubt worst: Jack and Jill. Only movie to "win" all Razzie categories.
Before Uncut Gems which I havnt seen: Spanglish. Was a good movie.
Click, 50 first dates or happy Gilmore
"Uncut Gems" was one of the most genuinely discomforting movies that I've seen in quite a while. It's a trainwreck from beginning to end that only gets more nerve-wracking over time.
Watch whiplash, you'll shit your pants
@@LuisSierra42 I've seen that as well, and it's insane. JK Simmons's character is the S-Tier abusive teacher of modern cinema.

I shared this same opinion on reddit when I first saw it and I was berated for my opinion and downvoted into oblivion. It's nice to see I'm not alone. Fuck Uncut Gems
@@jyo9735 you say fuck uncut gems because it has a perfect pacing?
So does the brother-in-law stand in adequately for the studios and film industry who profited from his childish movies but are ultimately annoyed by him and ready to throw him away asap?
Good take. I can see it.
Awesome.
Oooh you're good, you
That's actually a pretty good connection.
No cause he's the one who gets rich in that relationship, and the idea that this movie is meant to represent in some way his real life relationships is hilarious. This is a fictional story, not a movie about Adam Sandler
Adam Sandler releases Jack and Jill 2 to piss off everyone who see's it.
Adam Sandler: This is how I win.
I would love that
Kind of explains how we got Jack and Jill in the first place. What pissed off Adam Sandler before that was written?
No more men in female clothing please lol

I think you missed a critical phase of the man child progression. Movies like 50 First Dates and even The Wedding Singer are explicitly about growing up in the right way and at the right time so that you don't lose yourself amid the pressures of a society that values material gains over all else. In The Wedding Singer he's a working, functioning adult that fits into society, but has a career that is seen as unprofitable by society. Everyone wants a wedding singer and band, but they don't value them enough to provide a full living. In 50 First Dates he's working a decent job, but is still unfulfilled because he lacks the connection of family and romantic love. Additionally, his job at the zoo can be seen as being a caregiver, not needing to be cared for as in his other roles. And at the end of both films he winds up taking care of and providing for his romantic interests by doing exactly what he was always doing, what he always wanted to do. He wasn't being a man child, he was working towards a difficult goal through difficult circumstances. Very different from many of his other early roles, but it seems to explore a branch of development that was left out of this analysis.
Great observation
What about the one movie where he got his teacher pregnant and meets his son later when he's about to get married in that movie his son grew up despite a terrible childhood but Adams character didn't. I forgot the name of this movie XD!
Let’s like this so wisecrack can see this!
@@kcmcclary569 That's my boy .. Terrible movie.
No, wisecrack did another video on Sandler earlier and they went over those films as evidence for Sandler’s theatrical progression.

I had severe anxiety for two days after watching this movie. What an effin gem.
@@krmnych_backlog I just watched it and kind of regret that I did. It's got me feeling all kinds of messed up.
It’s so stressful, but that’s part of what makes it good
The directors are very talented and I'll be very interested to see what they do next, but Uncut Gems was not for me. It was too effective in its attempts to get under my skin and make me feel bad, and the camerawork was so tight on people's faces and bodies most of the time that it amplified all the anxiety tenfold. It was as you say, a physical experience. I think it could be slimmed down by 20-30 minutes and I'd love it. At its current length it's too much for me. To be clear it's definitely a good movie, I just did not particularly enjoy watching it.
"Not one scatological joke"- except for the beginning of the movie which starts by a literal colonoscopy
@Vincent Boies What about "IM GONNA CUM"
@Vincent Boies yeah it's a good movie, I probs won't watch it again in a long time unless I wanna feel stressed out of my mind but it's a good one
I was thinking the same when I saw Gems, same character indeed and a really interesting take on it
How about if after this movie, he never acts like a man child in a ilm again, that he really killed the man child? That would be interesting, what would the next thing to investigate be?
Nah, did you see the end of this video? Adam Sadler *is* the manchild.
The explanation of the man-child hits way too close to home...
When he described the relationship man child chases to date I felt that.
No kidding
I feel like peter pan most of the time...
@@cabellocorto5586 Because manliness to most men is a stepping stone to obtain the affections of women. Plus it's generally a good idea to listen to an outside perspective.
@@cabellocorto5586 The treats she described fits well to me, that has nothing to do with she being a woman. If you really wanna analyze it, its not about who said it, but where it comes from. And I would say it comes from society, that a man need to get a grip, get a family and provide for that family. Guys (and girls) who are not putting a vision of a family as a priority is a threat to mankind and should therefore be made a fool.
The mobster that shot him was the Oscars 😂
We live in an age when past tradition and establishment are heavily scrutinized. It is especially hard to embrace the responsibilities of adulthood, when a lot of us are still rebelling against such norms.
Well, my approach to it is that once everything is counter-culture, then... the "regular" culture becomes the counterculture? It sounds trickier than it is but yeah.
Maybe the new punk involves doing your taxes and working a 9-5
@@nullset2 I could see this actually happening within certain circles.
@Terror SharkPunk as in, Figuratively speaking, though.
I think it's possible to both rebel and grow up, it just takes a little critical thinking. You have to think about whether or not previous generations did something because it actually works, or if it was arbitrary.
It's not just a phenomenon of modern society. Since ancient time, our society continually celebrated people who gave up on their family responsibilities for personal glory and achievement. And these people are the role models of society, not the average peasant who overwork himself to feed his family.
Look at some of our oldest role models in modern time: Jesus Christ and Buddha. They're vagabonds who convincingly bullshit about their God delusion. Look where they are now, billions of people look at their guidance and teaching for the so-called "traditional values". It's ludicrous. Imagine letting some homeless loser who never had a job, wife, nor children teach you how to be a moral and responsible adult.
When even past tradition is built upon the mad rambling of literal hobos, it's no wonder humans struggle to be responsible.
I can't remember another movie like Uncut Gems... it genuinely gave me anxiety and I had to stop watching halfway thru. I told my wife that it was just too much stress to watch. But for days, I could not stop thinking about it, and I had to finish it! The ending blew me away, I'm so glad I saw it!
I will check out Uncut Gems. Knowing how it ends hasn't deterred me. If anything, it makes me want to watch it even more.
As for Click, I am probably among the few that enjoyed the film. It is about the importance of maturity, taking one's time, living in the moment, putting family first, and not fast-forwarding through life. It is basically what if A Christmas Carol was adapted for Sandler?
I loved click and it was sad as hell becuase he never had time for his family and as society demanded he devoted himself to his career and even chews out his son and daughter for daring to have imagination /be creative becuasd as he put it "Grow up and get the hell off of fantasy island" this to me was a jab at 60's era hippies who had permanent residency in fantasy island and lived to be creative and imaginative. And looking back on it that statement holds weight in modern society becuase adulthood is gradually being redefined.
With you on this one 100%
I liked Click too.
I loved Click as well, was a different turn from Sandler movies that I've watched previously
@Bobby Ranger I may b in the minority too. I love a lot of Adam Sandler movies. Even ones he produces like some of the Rob Snyder ones. I liked Click, Bedtime Stories, Big Daddy, Water Boy (my fav💚), Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, Grownups, Chuck&Larry and so on. Not a fan of Jack &Jill. But I think ppl can like comedies, dumb comedies and so called ‘legitimate’ movies. I once watched Shawshank then Little Nicky followed by Imitation Game. Who cares what critics bash... I mean even Tyler Perry’s laughing all the way to the bank💰. Good to know there r other closeted Sandman fans out there 😂

He never wrote Uncut Gems so where he goes depends on if he gets the material that best show cases his talent.
He didn't write it, but the culmination of the character is all up to him
The Safdie brothers wrote the movie with Adam Sandler in mind.
Exactly. He didn’t direct, produce, write, etc. whenever he gets involved on that end it ruins the film.
@@marquisdelafayette1929 You say this as if Sandler doesnt know what good films are. His films are terribly stupid, but he and his friends have fun making them, and they sell at the box office, so, no. Funny people was written by Judd Apatow, no?

@lockstam Yeah that's the point of the movie. That kind of thing is inherently unsustainable and will eventually ruin your life regardless of lucky breaks. Work in a club with pokes and I can tell the amount of people that win big and spent it wisely is hardly any of them.
@lockstam yeah I agree, I just felt robbed 😂
It's very real, though, for the gambler. You watch enough people end up with serious gambling addictions and there's a pattern. It becomes an addiction when someone becomes addicted to the tension of winning and the thrill of release, but over time they need higher and higher tension to make the release worthwhile. Eventually they're just as addicted to the state of tension of risk as they are the rush of winning. Eventually, as the guilt and shame piles up the gambling addict loses the joy in winning altogether because the guilt that you should have never risked it comes back, and they realise that they will just go and try to win again. It will never be enough, and knowing that deflates the fantasy. Eventually the only thing they want is to lose, because in that rock-bottom moment of losing more than you could afford to, things finally can't get any worse, and the shame of the addiction is eased by a rush of self-destruction. Eventually, a gambling addict becomes addicted to losing.
The lesson in the movie is about greed.

The first half of Adam Sandler’s body of work was funny. I think because he was in his 20s, he had a kind of Jim Carrey vibe. When I was young everybody loved Adam Sandler. It was when he hit his 30s and 40s that his shit wasn’t funny anymore.

Uncut Gems is my favorite film in a long long time. Its such an uncomfortable, immersive and iconic film. So endlessly quotable and so well shot by DP Darius Khondji. Its a shame that so many people didn’t like it because they expected a classic Sandler film.
It's like he played the same character his whole career. Mind-blown.
Is that mind-blowing...? I thought that was the general consensus on Adam Sandler's entire acting career. He's always just playing Adam Sandler inserted into different situations.
Sandler is fantastic actor. He just does what brings him joy. Everyone who thinks otherwise should watch Punch Drunk Love.
Im honestly surprised you didnt bring up Reign Over Me, which before Uncut Gems, i think was Sandler's finest piece of work, and my favorite of his films.
Reign over met is one of the best his works
The story of what we're to be told comparatively a well adjusted man who reveled in his family and responsibilities, who was then thrust into the "the man child" through trauma?
I think that's the only way to fit within the argument this video was making. Might have not been a good look to infantilise people dealing with grief/ depression/ mental health struggles.
This video blew my expectations completely out of the water. I never would have realized how deeply Uncut Gems is related to Sandler's entire body of work.
You had a long, very long, road to walk but, I think you made a valid point in the end, about the ever evolving Man-Child motif within Mr. Sandler's body of work. I wonder in Uncut Gems was his magnum opus, or if a future piece will be his final testimony on the Gen-X slacker?
Imagine non-ironically making a Raid Shadow Legend sponsor in 2020.
Yea, I thought RSL was outed for being cookie-cutter faux-gambling trash owned by a Casino mega-corp
It's bad enough to get a dozen of these ads on RUclips everyday, now it's in the videos too...
Imagine thinking people aren't going to take easy money in our hypercapitalistic system
I turned off the video after the ad started lol
By taking a sponsorship deal from RSL they are actively promoting gambling
It's his way of showing a mirror to society and asking it ... What did the man child do to deserve what was dealt to him ..... Like if a man child grew up he would be dishonest to himself at some level ... And if he doesn't grow up well society keeps pushing him harder ....

That was an incredible analysis. Ive watched my fair share of adam sandler movies and uncut gems just as of now and have never explained to myself the message of his filmography, or rather, never contemplated the existence if one, and certainly never articulated it in this regard. I guess i wanna say - thank you for humanising adam sandler’s movies in my head 👌
Wow, this is a mind-blowing analysis of the Sandler oeuvre, well done Wisecrack 👏👏👏
Comedians tend to do well in more serious roles because they are able to draw from the dark/sadness of their lives.
Most definitely, Jim Carrey being my favorite example. The Number 23, Eternal Sunshine, that Netflix crime movie, even Truman Show. Comedians are some of darkest, most melancholic people & their contribution to thrillers or gritty reality centered films is incredible. Like watching a completely different person on screen.
Except with Uncut Gems. It's so perfectly encapsulates all things Adam Sandler character wise while juxtaposing it with a gritty reality, our reality. Such a perfect fucking performance that I literally can't envision anyone but Sandler pulling off.
They do well because it panders to overly serious critics who have no sense of humor and only like dark comedies with a predictable death/murder at the end. They literally jerked off to Punch Drunk Love in the much the same way and it was interpreted as basically much the same way: "a serious Adam Sandler movie".
@@sor3999 critics hated The Number 23 so I feel your argument isn't entirely valid my guy.

I really wanna see you guys pitch this idea with someone who isnt rich and already famous. Adam can do this cause he's Adam. I'd like to see high school dropouts become successful by never growing up. And I dont mean throwing away your hobbies, I mean acting like a manchild like Adam does.
They won't, because no one likes manchilds, they are the absolute worst
You mean like most of RUclips?
Is Adam an actual man-child though?? His characters certainly are, but he's a successful actor and film producer regardless of what he says in interviews. Dude makes family friendly comedy movies with lots of product placement, a sound professional move if you ask me...
I loved Click. That movie for some reason was the only movie I had on DVD when I was 8-12 when I would put it on the player and watch it. Looking back, their best move was probably putting Linger in the soundtrack.
Big daddy is one of my favorite sandler films
His mid-90s movies are great

The funny thing about using the film critics as a measuring stick on if Sandler with finally make a good film is that it is a flawed premise. Professional critics are extremely unreliable judges of film. Nowadays they are far too concerned with the politics of a film that they never get around to actually judging a film on its merits. Plus, they live in such a bubble that they have lost touch with regular people. Generally, I look at what the critics think, if they hate it then it is probably relatable and has some uncomfortable truth in it. Therefore, I would likely enjoy it.
Uncut Gems biggest problem is that he didn't have to unlock the door; he could've just called the cops
I don't even know if I want to watch this now that I know he gets killed because of his own stupidity.

Poor taste is not a crime!
I will defend Click with my entire being. That damn movie made me cry.
He’s a good actor but a bad writer
This is such a good analysis!!!
So basically Adam Sandler lives his life so closely to his roles that it breaks the meta of any movie he's in to make people identify and characterize him in reality, accurately.
In other words; Adam Sandler is the greatest actor ever, but people just don't like him personally.
That part
Critics have the mentality that a good actor is only good as his last movie, but in Sandler's case, they always compare his recent movie to his successful one which I think is not fair.
Critics have slowly lost their credibility over the years. Especially when certain flawed movies somehow get perfect scores from critics. Adam should just do his parts for him.

It's difficult to get out of it. The only cure I found in my two decades of experience is willfully expose yourself to responsibilities, from small ones to big ones, and if possible, to move away from home, because you force yourself into a situation where you have to organise your day and the space around you, and also have to renounce to unhealthy habits. The ability to renounce things that may be unhealthy, useless or risky to you is one of the indicators that you have grown to be an adult, and most of all, a strong person that relies on its own to keep his day going.

Adam Sandler. Apparently he’s good now.
Adam Sandler is the history of a Chad who played roles of underappreciated men becoming Chads and seeing that format to fail and lose relevance and frame. For later to surpass that preconceived notion and to hold the frame as a Chad once again.
Nah, he just plays the same character on and on. Obviously he’s going to get good at that one character.
Adam Sandler is very underappreciated imo. His movies were never even that bad. Billy Madison, The Waterboy, and Happy Gilmore are comedy classics that defined the mid to late 90s. Each of those movies have as many funny and quotable moments as literally any highly regarded comedy before or after it. Going into the 2000s there's solid flicks like Punch Drunk Love, Anger Management, The Longest Yard, and I think Funny People is pretty underrated. His movies were never intended to be Oscar material movies. That's like someone making rap music for a demographic of country music enthusiasts; probably not going to go well in the first place.

Not going to lie I had these exact thoughts of Adam Sandler and his "family is good" films where he usually has a realization moment and changes his ways but instead doubles down hard in Uncut Gems. Its so perfect to the point where his death in the film is shocking because he's built up his man child character where him "winning big" felt like it was going to be his realization moment but instead he takes a 22. to the frontal lobe.

Sorry, but that attempt at an Adam Sandler impression at the beginning of this video was pretty terrible, lol
I’ve never understood the hate. Sure, he’s made some cheap schlock, but that doesn’t stop others getting critical acclaim. Look at the music industry. Film critics are more critical for sure, but Sandler usually gives a decent performance as an actor, and sells tickets. He just likes a bit of silly comedy, I don’t like all of his films, Waterboy and Billy Madison are pretty funny when your high, but I can still appreciate that he does the job he sets out to do. The overt criticism feels very elitist, almost classist. As if every film needs to be an arthouse style, tour de force of emotional exploration. If you try writing a piece of music like that all the critics will call you boring.
So man children have a mommy kink big deal, c'mon 60's psychologists, I expect *you* of all people to not kink-shame.

Still, this video connects his characters in ways I never would've thought of otherwise, so thanks for making this video.
When I was a kid, I thought he was funny. But as an adult, I really hate the manchild trope.
I suspect a part of why so many people hate the man child trope is because to a greater or lesser degree, we feel that tension of wanting to avoid responsibility and just go back to being kids when things were easy.
Escapism is a huge crutch, even if you wouldn't be considered a man child.
it's pretty clear that with his 'bad' films he likes to have fun which perhaps makes him break out his A-game when it comes to films that are more of a challenge. Sandman does his best work with the best directors tho.
Hey, what about an episode on Dark (the Netflix series)? I feel like I need someone to explain it all to me.
Take a look at the family tree, google it on the internet, you'll understand afterwards, der anfang ist das ende und das ende ist der anfang
When I finished watching Uncut Gems I was so tense and out of breathe. It felt like I was having an anxiety attack, plus a migraine and high blood pressure.
I mean, you gotta respect the guy that put jennifer aniston and nikole kidman to dance wearing coconuts as bikini
I’ve got to say, this is the best video of yours I’ve seen.
After spending years validating man-children everywhere, Sandler owes the whole of society some recompense.
Great analysis. Thanks for sharing.
He reminds me of Andy Samberg. Even similar names.
Uncut Gems is perfect
I see the *FAKE* and *SCRIPTED* Raid add.
I instantly dislike.
I can't help it.
It's like a sneeze!
Angry Management is the reverse of this. Anger Management is what happens when one rejects their inner child.
I thought adam sandler was a good actor then i realize he just yells 40% of his lines
The problem is that Adam Sandler only acted in Uncut Gems it wasn't something he wanted to make. It's when he has complete control he makes terrible films. Although personally I think some of his older stuff is a bit unfairly maligned, recently he seems to be phoning stuff in a lot more.
For once, that Trump ad in the beginning seems apropos. Manchild indeed.
So you can't just stop talking about Trump. The Man has buildings all over the world but lives rent free in your head. Bravo
Orange man bad. How original
@@trajanfidelis1532 Orange Man Hitler too
@@josephbassey1501 That's an insult to millions of people who actually lost their lives to a real tyrant. If you wanna console/delude yourself by making "Orange Man" into some kind of boogeyman you can rail against and virtue signal with, whatever, but please don't just throw out things like that that are just plain ignorant.
