      I've been out of magic for a while but I casually keep up with the state of the game and I cannot for the life of me understand how Sheoldred costs as much as she does. It's like... a slightly better Siege Rhino?? How is a 4 cost beater even playable in formats where Ragavan, Voidwalker, opt, etc are legal? Would boomer jund even play Sheoldred over huntmaster/Kalitas back in the day?

    • @chrash7670
      @chrash7670 11 месяцев назад +9

      @@kolr2873 It's mostly that high because it's super playable in many formats, modern, standard, pioneer, commander, etc. so the demand is high. The recent price spikes were most likely bc of Modern with the printing of the One Ring. You can use them together to stabilize insanely well and also punish your opponent for playing the Ring.

    • @MrPiotrV
      @MrPiotrV 11 месяцев назад +11

      Sheoldred will not last anywhere near 10 years. Its power level is nowhere near ragavan or goyf or even clique. It's barely played in modern right now, let alone in 10 years.

    • @MrPiotrV
      @MrPiotrV 11 месяцев назад

      @@kolr2873 It is definitely overpriced but what you're missing is that sheoldred is a win con by itself, without even needing to attack. some decks just scoop to a resolved sheoldred.

    • @cheesi
      @cheesi 11 месяцев назад

      @@kolr2873 I'm not an expert but it's a MUCH better siege rhino, I'd say. Mono-coloured (easier to cast), continuously gains you life and loses your opponent life rather than just an etb, synergy with card draw to keep your life total up and punishes opponent's card draw.
      Can't speak for most formats since on paper I just play commander with friends where she's not all that good, but I play standard bo3 on Arena with a spellslingy burny Izzet deck and whenever Sheolderd resolves and I don't get an answer in the next 2 turns it's pretty safe to say I've lost. Seems like a pretty strong counter to my kind of deck in particular since I like drawing cards and don't have many sources of 5+ damage but I imagine it's rough for others too.

    I reckon Ragavan will go the same way as Goyf. Answers will be printed that handle it too efficiently, the meta will shift, power creep will happen, but it has a level of iconic-ness that will prevent people from selling it for too cheap. Just the fact that it is _the_ Ragavan will probably be enough to keep demand high.

    • @cameroncorrado3935
      @cameroncorrado3935 11 месяцев назад +6

      They already printed answers to it in the form of the pitch-cast elementals. Eventually every one-drop creature will need to have Ancestral Recall stapled onto it in order to be considered playable. In a roundabout way, Ragavan is already dangerously close to being exactly that as it is.

    Lol I've been cataloging my collection recently via manabox so I can actually find things to build with vs looking at 15,000 cards and going its gotta be there somewhere.....So I've had a lot of these moments the last week. Seeing staples you remember being hard to track down playsets for at the time and now its a bulk rare or down shifted lol. As someone who started playing when Lion's Eye Diamond was called trash it was a heartwarming to see it become the little lotus that could this far down the line. After sitting on my collection I'm trying to go back in and put it to use building a pauper play box and hopefully coming up with a few random cubes to time capsule my era(s) of magic (Mirage- Invasion) and also build a few to experience limited environments I missed over the years.... I missed Innistrad everytime 😭. I missed Lorwyn, I missed Kamigawa, I missed good Ravnica.... RTR block had a few gems but man what a lackluster time to try and make a comeback into game in hindsight lol fell back off at Theros when my playgroup fell apart.

    My friends and I started doing this thing where we made commander decks for each other, without telling them anything about the deck. We then all play a game with these decks, with the commanders face down. As a special action on your turn, you may ask a yes or no question about your commander, and then you may guess the commander. You may only cast the commander once you have gotten it right. It is an interesting test for improvisation and figuring out the deck you are playing on the fly. I highly recommend it, even off camera.
    Side note: because tutors make the mystery aspect of the game less interesting, we have a restriction on all tutors that you have 3 seconds to look at the deck for your tutor target. Ya know, so they won’t search through the deck finding all the combos, and instead need to figure them out more naturally.

    I started playing modern Jund around 2015 and the price of the Goyfs and Lilis alone was probably around €7-800. The fall in price does not make me sad because more affordable cards makes Magic a better and more accessible game. The bit that does make me sad is that part of the reason the price has fallen is that these cards are less viable in modern than they used to be.

    Lilliana of the Veil is also a card I "lost" a lot of money on. Used to be amazing in modern, but now? Nobody plays it anymore.

    A friend had fate reforged promo ugin and sold it. I was one day late my brother wanted to give him his Tarmogoyf which the friend could've sold for a higher price to trade for the Ugin. Both were kinda disappointed. Knowing the price drop this hurts even more. Especially because it was hard for my brother to sell cards after all he lives on the country side. And well he wasn't too sure about shipping.

    about ragavan i think he will always be around 40, he will not be reprinted probably as then we need to go back to kaladesh which is highly unlikelly that it will happen soon(although i would love it as it is my favorite set), the only thing that could happen is banning ragavan from any format that will lower the price a lot, everyone that does not play it anymore will sell the card as fast as possible flooding the market with ragavans.

  • @Simon-ow6td
    @Simon-ow6td 11 месяцев назад

    Currently, October 2023, a (near mint trend) Ragavan is ~62 (near mint trend) Sol rings on CardMarket.
    My guess is that in 2033 it will be ~10 Sol rings. I legit think it will never be strictly powercrept, but I think it might get banned in some formats, or non-commander formats might die down, or the gameplay might evolve where Ragavan isn't seeing top tier play.

    • @MrPiotrV
      @MrPiotrV 11 месяцев назад +1

      Gonna agree with you there. I don't think they will ever make a strictly better ragavan, it will probably just stop being played due to metagame changes. If non-commander formats die, magic dies, so we don't need to worry about that scenario since then everything will collapse anyway.

      Haha no 😅 the joke is that they are incredibly impractical videos that people have been asking for. The footage under the table would be two hours of dark footage with bad audio and feet in it, but somehow people ask for it. We're saving the people from asking for something they don't actually want :)

    Off topic of the video but thanks to you guys I finally started playing MTG! Started on MTGA with the color challenges and now I'm building a budget Urza EDH deck (fitting for the thumbnail lol! All the bits and pieces were surprisingly cheap! Even the cedh staple!) Now I'm looking into a 60 card format to get into and I'm considering either Pauper or Pioneer. Thanks for introducing me to this world! (Though my wallet would be less happy lmao)

    One thing to keep in mind is that Wizards stock price has tanked this year. For the first time in a long time, wall Street doesn't have high hopes for the future of MTG. In ten tears, Ragavan might be the most expensive creature in modern at $15

    Did Serum Vision go down due to the Preordain unban? And obviously Ragavan will be 8-10 Sol Rings because WotC will have unbanned Gut Shot or reprinted it or powercrept it.

    • @joshuagriffith9191
      @joshuagriffith9191 11 месяцев назад

      Serum visions went down in price due to multiple things, multiple reprints and the printing of better cantrips like consider and the reprint of opt. Visions hasn’t really been used much for 5 or more years.
      Also, gut shot isn’t banned anywhere.

      That card was expensive because it was a Standard chase card. There's been hundreds of those over the years. Vraska's Contempt at $20? Rekindling Phoenix at $25-30? Those are from the same era even. You can make a 5-hour video of cards that were $20+ because of standard and are now $0.20.

    2033- Ragavan = 3/4 sol rings?
    And a 1-drop will have to have 4 power, or 3 with serious upside effects, to be top-tier playable in any largely aggro strategy.
    And the majority of new full-set releases and tournament-playable cards will be from non-Magic intellectual property, so most of the people trying to work in Ragavans will be doing it just for the nostalgia value.
