They showed Flash Gordon on British TV when I was a kid. Fab.

I thought I was the only one who cared about Flash Gordon. Thank you so much for all the insights. For me it transcends its time and is the epitome of otherworldly majesty and filmic creativity. I'm disappointed that the serials have never been remastered and issued on Blu Ray, especially as I never even knew about the Image Entertainment DVD release.

My Dad showed me these as a kid. They are amazing. Imagine the simple idea of doing an honest beat-for-beat update of something from the 1930s, in 1980, and it turns out awesome.
We don't need our heroes deconstructed or "updated" to something beyond recognition., Just do them RIGHT the first time, and audiences will respond positively.

Agree completely on the "deconstructed" criticism. It was unique when Alan Moore and Frank Miller did it almost 30 years ago. Now it's time to move on and let heroes be heroes again. Looking at you, Warner Bros!

This is a great channel. Heath you’re doing a fantastic job covering these lost vintage serials. Another reason why I love kino lorber also. I love the art work on most of their blu rays. Take care my friend.

My daughter loved this serial when she was young (3 or 4), she went on to watch the cartoon in later years. It was enlightening to see how the simple use of music and reaction shots with basic special effects give the drama and excitement. It was also great for educating her on how movies/tv evokes our emotions and how they can be used to tell a story.
Now she's 16 and atleast once a year we sit down and watch a couple of chapters.

I'm around her age, glad to see I'm not the only one! I love going to my grandma's and watching stuff like this with her. Gets her talking about old memories and it's always a good time.

So true! I love the lightning bolt helmets on some of Ming's soldiers.

Glad I stumbled across your page. The music was the theme song of my childhood because I walked around all day humming (as best I could) the background music. I saw them first in the 50's on TV when I thought they were brand new.

Nice job! It's good to see this and others serials getting some attention. Got the Image set a while ago and still need to watch the two sequels. I hope you do more or these. This is where the superhero really began. Flash Gordon is one of the few serials I've watched in one sitting.

Buster Crabbe was the bees knees. I bought Arizona’s Raiders on your recommendation and was happy too see him in it.

Good thing I bought that DVD set of Flash Gordon. It's fun to watch especially the rocket ships rocking on those strings.

I've only seen maybe half a dozen serials all the way through, but this is my favorite. I want to read the comic strips some day. He's a great character and I have one of NECA's recent figures of Gordon and Ming under my TV.

Hey Heath. First saw that Flash Gordon serial cut up as morning kids tv show. New episode every day. It was awesome. What an amazing thing to do, dig back deep into the archives and dust off a serial from the 30s as kids TV. As someone who lived it 😂 it totally worked. 😜🤯 can’t help but think how amazing the 80s film would have been if Federico Fellini had of done it. He unfortunately passed on it. It’s still a gloriously weird kind of kinky Italian Extravaganza regardless. 😂👍

Another excellent episode, Heath! I hope the good folks at Classic Flix are watching, as I would love to see them do a restoration of all the Flash Gordon serials. They would look phenomenal!

I love Flash Gordon. Can't remember the release but bought 1 of the serials and 1 disc was a duplicate so I could not finish the serial. I then happened on the THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES OF FLASH GORDON at 1/2 Price Books in the discount area best find ever.

If it wasn't for Flash Gordon there would be no Star Wars.

I love these serials, and the 1980 film. Great video tribute! Love your many observations. Star Wars owes sooooo much to Flash. Darth Vader is a direct descendant of Ming. The SW opening exposition crawl was directly lifted from the third serial. However, mention should also be made of Flash Gordon’s original source, which would be ERB’s John Carter of Mars. The Flash Gordon comic strip was a direct knock-off of JC. (I’m also a huge fan of the 3D JC film ❤️).
I currently have the Image box set you mentioned, which is the best presentation available. However, I’d die for a Blu-ray set, properly remastered from original elements. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
As for future installments, howzabout The Mysterious Doctor Satan? Great fun!

    Loving this series.
I am hoping that there will be an installment on the Batman serials; those are a huge contrast with what we have now, both in terms of the look (the financiers of the Batman serials were clearly not millionaire playboys ... maybe ten-aire playboys) and in terms of Batman's capabilities, since Batman himself seems to have a glass jaw, resulting in his having to have his batbutt pulled out of the emergency by Robin, fairly regularly.
I also hope that you will cover THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN MARVEL, a personal favorite. I must note that, in one of the installments, the thugs go to a professor's home to steal a part to make the Baddie's Evil Weapon. They are set upon by the professor's butler, or majordomo, or whatever he is supposed to be; either way, this guy delivers one helluva fight. Frankly, this butler is an infinitely better fighter than Batman would be in his own serial.
Finally, I would like to recommend ZORRO'S FIGHTING LEGION, which gives Zorro a super-team of fellow Zorros (Zorri?) who ride with him. I don't recall that they actually do anything else, but, whenever they ride, they sing a heroic song about how "We RIIIIIIDE!!!" Because all heroes need their theme music, even in the days before John Williams. (There would be plenty of singing in the Disney ZORRO, with Guy Williams ... I mean, it WAS Disney ... but my recollection is that not a lot of it was done by Zorro himself, especially while he was on duty.)

Great review. My suggestion for next review would be Captain Marvel. My opinion, the best serial ever made.
