    This scene was powerful. Erica has always been selfish, a snob, and thought she was better than so many people. Mona was probably the only person in Erica's life who truly accepted her for all the things she was, like any good mother would, and Erica knew this. It's so hard to lose the one person who is your cheerleader in life and believes in you and anything you do despite your flaws.

    Whoever wrote this scene had to have delved into hours and hours of footage of Susan Lucci and Francis Heflin playing Mon and Erica. You have to have really watched the show from its inception to understand this scene, why it makes so much sense and why it happened. Erica was at times AWFUL to her mother and at times Mona just couldn't understand Erica. In fact most of the time Mona didn't get her. Yet they KNEW each other like books. The love was so evident played in strong undertone to it best. People do grieve this way. It takes countless hours of friendship, love, arguing, a lifetime of living next to each other to come to a moment like this. The writer knew the characters well. In fact in watching the two from the beginning one knew on the very first day we met these characters in 1970, that this would be the way it would have to be.

    • @trcooper5793
      @trcooper5793 5 лет назад +6

      Beautifully stated Brian Lavalle! And yes you are right people do grieve this way. One of the reasons that this scene was so gut-wrenching for me is because I had lost my dad a couple years before. He and I did not have the relationship that Erica and her mother did but I was very very close to him and I had a similar reaction at the cemetery when they put him in the ground. So that brought back so many memories and kudos to Susan Lucci for getting through it because we do all know that Fran Heflin played her mother for about twenty-four or twenty-five years and they were very close. So she had to go through the grieving at the real funeral and get through her grief and then she had to come back to work and relive it all over again. That doesn't happen that often because oftentimes when soap characters die they're just being written off the show. But in this case that actual actress passed away and she was a very beloved actress as was the character that she played and then we had to deal with the TV funeral for her character.
      When I need a good cry I always come here.

      @@trcooper5793 It make me think of my mother and me losing her in 2000. My mother used to get so angry at the way Erica spoke to Mona. totally agree. I mean half of all of Erica's scene, always included Mona. She was the only one that could bring Erica's histrionics down with one look. I had to watch this scene again after so many years because I remembered that somehow the way I behaved seemed familiar. Wow, what a powerful scene & great acting. I wish that I was only acting. I remember when this moment happened. It was such a big deal. I like to believe that this wasn't acting for Susan lucci, because in acting circles when you grow close in playing an on screen family for so long and then one part of that family is no longer around and you acknowledge their absence onscreen especially in something like this, the lines between fiction and reality blur.

    This was one of the most moving scenes ever on AMC. Having watched from the begining always loved the relationship between Erika and Mona. Beneath all the fighting and Erika's often terrible treatment of Mona, you could always feel a deep love between the two. Of course this was made possible by the wonderful acting of Susan Lucci and the brilliant Frances Heflin.

    What was so sad was that Erica realized how much chaos she put poor Mona through, from the time she was a teenager, to tom finding the birth control pills to kendall, and richard fields. Ernestine Maloy A number of soaps were done live up until the mid 70’s. I believe “Edge of Night” was the last daytime soap to do live, and then “Search For Tomorrow” did it in the 80’s for one episode which people believe it was a publicity stunt. I think soaps moved at more of a slower pace back then but it did keep people glued more. Today, I think our attention span short. One soap that I think moved at a good pace and I have been binge watching is “The Doctors” the flow of storylines lasted just the right amount of time. “Dark Shadows” was one of my mom’s favorite soaps, but then again there probably wasn’t a pre-teen or teenager that wasn’t crazy about that show. It ran from 1966-71. I discovered it on Sci-fi Channel in the early 2000’s.
