When my grandfather (I called him Opa) was 80 and was dying I asked him if he felt "80"and he said something I will never forget. "I may have been here 80 years but I'm still the same man whose always been behind these eyes. We were built for eternity, it's just our bodies that fail us". I'm 52 and 20 years seems like nothing so I know what he means now.

He was talking about the years, but he was also talking about his dreams. The last thing he said in the first half of the song was "I still believed in my dreams"... then the first thing he says in the second half is "20 years where'd they go, 20 years I don't know. I sit and I wonder sometime..." when you're 18, you have all these dreams of what you're going to do. Then 20 years later, you're sitting in a cubicle filing insurance claims or something... ain't nobody dreamed about that.

Young man, here's some news you might not want to hear, but if you think time flies by now at your age, it goes by even faster and faster as you age. I remember being in high school and the time from the first day of school in September until the last day of school in June seemed like an impossibly long eternity. I'm 57 now and the time from September to June seems like what 1 month felt like when I was in school. There's a line in the song "Jack and Diane" by John Mellencamp which sums it up perfectly: "Hold on to 16 as long as you can, change is coming around real soon that make us women and men".

People got mad when Seger sold "Like A Rock" to Chevrolet. This song was always a lot more than just a commercial blip. Also, the two greatest slid guitar solos of all time! And Bob Seager has a lot more like it.

The people who were paying attention know that Seger allowed Chevy the use of "Like A Rock" for the benefit of the Detroit auto industry workers. He thought the music could help them more than just keeping it himself.

Bob Segar stripped down the life of a human. We all go on our own journey but at the core of us all are these thoughts and feelings as we get perhaps not older but wiser.
