I adopted 2 male cockatiels. The woman said they were friends and shouldn't be separated. Upon bringing them home I noticed one was plucking it's feathers, stressed, and his wing was messed up. The other one was healthy. The healthy one was stressing out the other one and making him pluck his feathers. I separated them, gave the healthy one up for adoption and now the stressed cockatiel is growing his feathers back and hasn't been plucking! :)

Cockatiels kind of are a dime a dozen as far as parrots go. More exotic breeds will cost money... and lots of it.

We had a Cockatiel for around a year...she was hand-bred. My mother was with her when she was suddenly making these clicking sounds in the nose. Not knowing what it was mum was instructed by the vet to place her in a box and take her to him, of which she did. Patch bit her just as she was passing her to the vet and she had to leave her in the box. The vet said that it was fine and he would look at her but at that time Patch had a fit and passed away. The vet wanted to do an Autopsy to find out what happened, but that would've cost alot. After 6 months passing, mum and I went to the pet shop and bought another hand-bred Cockatiel. We named her Patch (2) after our first Patch and she is also as lovely as the first. My mum says that they are all different and do different things and that life moves on. We hope you've bought another bird and have some company. Take care.
P.S. We now have three Cockatiels of which are three different breeds and they bring us much joy.

It's a good little educational video about cockatiel. As I watched this, I remembered Babie's behaviors. At least she loved me and I loved her. Had to give her away when I moved away from my folks' house. Maybe in the future, I'll be getting a cockatel or two.

When my birds mate died out bird also shrieked a lot. What we did was make sure to spend extra time with him when he started chirping loud, so that he wouldn't get lonely and pluck his feathers out. We also let him out his cage more often. Slowly he started to quieten and now he sits with us on the couch every night and is content with our company instead of his mate's.

Chana C We always leave the cage door open. He sits on top, at night he goes in to sleep. I put a picture of him and his mate on the wall right above the cage. He sits and stares at the picture for hours. He misses his mate so much. He likes people around, but I need a glove to handle him or I will get bit.

New bird owners (who maybe don’t want to watch the entire video):
    Here are some tips:
    1. Get a larger cage if your bird gets mad when you stick your hand in. The bird is territorial, and so it’s best to get a larger cage. You can get a good size cage for $60-$70 on Amazon.
    2. Don’t stick your hand in often, and when you do (to put food/water in, or change the perches or toys,) wear something like a glove (so your hand won’t look like your hand) this way, the bird wont associate your hand with intrusion.
    3. When the bird bites you, hold your hand still and do not move. No matter how much it hurts, you need to teach the bird that biting will not solve the problem. The bird just wants you to go away. If whip your hand back when it tries to bite you, that will teach it that biting you makes you go away. After it realizes that biting you won’t do anything, it will stop biting.
    4. Let the bird come out of the cage on it’s own. Stay by the cage, talk to the bird, read to it, sing to it, etc. and after a few weeks, you’ll make significant progress. Do this one day: Put the birds favorite food outside of the cage and normal food/food it doesn’t like in the cage. Do this often.
    5. Take baby steps! The bird won’t like you immediately. Trust takes time. Don’t try to rush! And don’t worry when the bird doesn’t like you immediately!
Note: DONT TOUCH THE BIRD FOR THE FIRST WEEK!!! No matter how tempting it is, do not touch the bird. That will cause a lot of stress, and the bird could get sick or even die. On top of this, it will 100% ruin your relationship with the bird, and your bird will not want to be around you.
    Good luck!
P.S. here is an excellent thread that I used when training my bird. It works like magic!

I have a wavy parrot, and a cockatiel. They love each other (both of them are girls), my cockatiel often bows her head to my wavy, ahd she gives her head scratch. She also often gives him head scratch, when my cockatiel doesn't want to, but my wavy wants it, and in the cage, what the wavy wants, that will happen :)
My cockatiel also does lots of the behaviors in the video, except the agressive.

it's normal, they also have a bald spot behind their crest which is more prominent on the lutino cockatiels because of their genetics

    That is pretty funny ;)
Your cockatiel, Milo, looks just like my Ozzie, and the other pearl cockatiel looks like Ozzie's mate, Jasmine/Jaz.

Just a question, we have two birds. Dory and Nemo; and Nemo is one we got recently, but he is VERY aggressive. He is very nice to Dory (female) and they are good friends (he cleans her, she cleans him) but with us, he bites really hard. When we first bought him, we didn't really quarantine him for 30 days like everyone recommended, but now he relies on the female (Dory) too much. He even panics greatly and screams when we take her away. How do we get him to warm up to us and be kinder? People say not to back away when he tries to bite, but that makes no sense because how do we protect ourselves then? We have already clipped his wings and require further help. Please reply anyone, thanks. :)

***** The struggle is incredible. Ours flirts with the female and they ALMOST mated till I stopped them. The pet store owner told us that they won't mate unless it's the natural environment, so we allow supervised visits. I'm just going to sell him and then buy another tamed female bird and hopefully they become real good friends. The only thing that worries me is that Nemo and Dory are already pretty damn good friends; he cleans her, she cleans him, etc. Hopefully if we split the two, nothing will happen, but again, this is still a possibility. Goodluck with your bird and hopefully he warms up. :/

Many parrots are monogamous, and tend to form a strong pair-bond with a single individual. They will bond with humans, but they prefer to bond with other birds; especially if Nemo wasn't hand-raised (many cockatiels aren't, as they tend to be mass-bred; it's not a good situation), he's probably formed an extremely tight bond with Dory, and won't bond easily with you or another human. There might be nothing you can do.

ara macao I really avoid thinking negatively (not to be rude to you), but I have hope that there is a chance that he may warm up to us and so I am trying desperately to find a solution. But I do agree with you cause some parrots just may not warm up to humans, but I do not want to give up. Thanks for the information though, I appreciate it!

Let them mate! Advantages of that is you can sell them, keep one to take away the sohcial life only with Dory or, anything! I don't have a bird though.

Adam Mcstay Letting the birds mate means that in some cases Nemo may become aggressive and Dory will lose tons of calcium and may even abandon the egg in some cases. Yeah, i haven't ever bred birds before so I really don't want to let a bird die in my hands if something does happen. Thanks for the suggestion though.:/

In # 6 that is true but also that is the bird regurgitating his food ~

    • @b.l.o.b.2017

That's only if the bird is EXTREMELY bonded to u and sees you as their mate. If they DO see you as their mate then do your best not to let breeding take place between you and your bird as a LOT of problems will rise from it. If your bird regurgitates for you then politely just walk away or quickly make your bird do a trick to make your bird stop.
