The orange ear coverts (to use the proper description) is what natural, wild cockatiels have. However aviculture has a cockatiel breed called "whiteface" which is where the ears are either white or pale grey. Both of my girls are whiteface. My 3 year old is a whiteface pearl pied (that's THREE breeds in one bird) and my 13 year old is a whiteface lutino (better known as an albino). Regular lutino cockatiels have those orange ear coverts and a mix of pale yellow and ivory head, crest, and body. "lutino" is what you call a predominately yellow bird in a species where that is not the natural colour.
And yes, they are beautiful! Doesn't matter what breed. :)

Thank you! I was actually thinking of getting one of these recently. At first I wanted a conure, but I wanted to rescue a bird more. There were no rescuable conures in my area, but there are quite a few of these that it seems their owners can no longer care for. And whatever the bird, I'm sure I'll love it. This video helped a lot. Thank you again.

  • @Tieltoro
    @Tieltoro 7 лет назад +14

Yay! Cockatiels are amazing. Other parrot species are cool but I've never received so much unconditional love from any other animal than I get from Totoro. Looking at your cage set up and it looks perfect. I would say, to any other cockatiel owners or potential owners out there, it depends on the cockatiel what perches you use. I started only putting different sizes and types of natural wood perches in Totoro's cage because she was chewing the rope ones up too much and I was worried she might be ingesting the fibers (and the shredded bits were too much of a claw snag hazard to risk it). I still let her have them on her tree perches outside of the cage because I can supervise her but in her cage no non-natural toys allowed because unsupervised she can get up to trouble ha ha. I did so much research before getting her (Cockatiel cottage is a great place to start if anyone is looking into a pet cockatiel, I refer to it a lot when I am not sure of something) and I still find myself having to look things up now and then. She can be a pain in the butt when she's hormonal and she's the biggest scaredy cat I know but even with her knack for testing my patience I absolutely cannot fathom life without her. I love her just about as much as a mother could love their own child. They are A LOT of work (people tend to think of them as "easy" parrots but they're not) but the work is SO SO SO worth it if you're willing to put it in. Every bird will be different because they have their own personalities but mine turned out to be the cuddliest, sweetest, most loving animal I've ever had in my life. :D

That’s really cute! My little ‘tiel Mickey (I named him after my grandpa who passed away in August 2018 ) loves it when he gets his head scratched sometimes he makes little peeps and squeals when he gets scratched similar to a cat purring and chirps this cute little tune which sounds like he’s going “ Hercules Hercules Hercules” I love him dearly he is now a year old and I got him in December 2018 when he was 3 months old

my first bird was a 10 year old rehome cockatiel. we were told by the previous owner that he had been wild caught in Australia when he was young and then brought to Michigan for the pet trade, hence the reason why he had no band on his ankle. also explained his behavior of not liking to be handled and just liked to perch on our shoulder or heads instead to ride around the house. he was a sweet little boy and I loved him dearly. he passed away unexpectedly 5 years later while we were out of the house running errands. we think it may have been a heart issue because he was getting older. I love all bird's, but cockatiels are still my favorite because of the happy memories I have, and I love their squeeky cute whistle voices 💕

Cockatiels are soooooo cute!!! A long time ago, my parents had 2 cockatiels. They took good care of them, and being that they were opposite genders, they ended up breeding and producing 3 baby tiels!
My dad and I decided that we wanted to get birds again. Instead of getting cockatiels, though, we decided to step up one notch and get green cheek conures, which have made very good pets so far.

My cockatiel cage has 3/4" wide spacing. I've never had any issues with it and matter of fact that cage (from King's Cages) is the best one I've ever had in 37 years of aviculture. My cage is 48" wide, nearly 6 feet tall, and 32" deep. My 3 year old loves to fly across it. 1" bar spacing is too wide. But 3/4" is perfect actually. Model number is ELTPC. I bought mine in 2005 and LOVE IT -12 years old and it can easily last another 10 years. Kings Cages now has a 5/8" wide bar spacing too that was not available when I bought mine.

Unless you have asthma or other respiratory issues. The only bird that is well suited for people with severe respiratory issues would be a toucan but because of their highly specialized diet and other needs they generally should be avoided to have as a pet unless the owner is knowledgeable, understand bird behavior, and can provide all their needs.

you're not supposed to take them in the shower, the water droplets come to hard and fast for the little guys to handle, instead there are spray bottles specifically for cleaning birds, or you could always fill up the sink with about an inch of water and make it a bird bath

I have had my pet cockatiel for a long time. She was lost in the wild and got found and fostered by us. We put an ad out but no one answered; just as well for us because we love her so much. She just lost her cage mate (a female) and was completely beside herself until we got a male companion (they don't mate; she's a bit of a ditz and ignores serenading. He tried to preen her but she didn't let him).

I have asthma and have two cockatiels. I didn't know they shed so much and that there was so much dander build-up. My asthma is pretty well-controlled now as an adult, but when I clean their cage, I have to wear a mask. I have made the mistake of not wearing one, I ended up inhaling some of the dander when it was stirred up from cleaning, and it felt like I had a cold, my chest was wheezy and I had trouble breathing. Definitely consider this, especially if you have severe asthma.

I've got 2 cockatiels. They (mostly) won't eat anything but seeds, so I buy them the best seed mix I could find. Whole grain, treated to avoid bacteria, with high quality grains and less of the more fatty ones (like sunflower seeds).
I tried getting them to eat pellets (specific for cockatiel feeding)) with no luck. As for fruit, they will only eat it when I'm eating when they can "steal" from me.
It is not easy getting them to eat well.

Love Cockatiels and have had many as pets, however as you mentioned, they produce a lot of feather dust and their poops do get messy on your shoulder. By contrast-budgies are much less messy and their droppings are dryish and rubbery and are easily removed with a finger without making a mess on your shoulder. Budgie droppings normally will roll off you if you nudge them off with a fingernail, or pick them up with a piece if tissue paper. Cockatiel poops require washing with a sponge or cloth to clean afterwards, especially if they are out on you for long periods. Might sound like a strange thing to talk about, but it can become a deal-breaker...whereas budgies don't have that issue really. Also the volume of Cockatiel calls can be a bit piercing, if they are next to your ear. However, negatives aside, they are great pets, relaxed/lazy shoulder birds (not hyperactive), great whistlers and full of beans when they get chirpy (i.e. when placed in front of a mirror or other cockatiel or if you whistle to them). Budgies can be a little hyperactive compared to cockatiels, but great fun.

Hi Jessi! First of all, I wanted to say huge thanks for not only making wonderful videos, but also motivating and teaching me to take better care of my cockatiel. He's been living with me for many years, but he was extremely scared of people when I got him and I never managed to establish a trustful relationship with him, so after a few years I just gave up and accepted that he was wild. But I've been watching a lot of your videos and it motivated me to start trying to take better care of him. I managed to introduce a few new foods to his diet, started giving him regular baths, and sometimes he takes treats from my hand, which is a good progress!
I have a question - how do I trim his nails if he doesn't let me touch him yet? I don't want to break the trust that we're slowly starting to establish by catching him forcefully with a towel. I'm really not sure how to go about this.
Thank you, and have a wonderful day!

hey everyone! note on the toys with metal clasps and bells that there is a possibility your bird could get heavy metal poisoning. most of these clasps and bells are only plated in stainless steel- meaning there are harmful things underneath the plated part and, with time, the protective coat will chip off. instead of using metal clasps, purchase plastic ones at mysafebirdstore.com -- or tie your toys to the top of the cage with a safe, rope-like material.

we also have an african gray parrot and a cute little budgie æ. they see eachother alot because they are in the same room, they are good friends so we are not worried they feel alone when we're not home in a few hours. We interact with them alot and the gray parrot is always following me around when he is out and takes he's flights and walks 😂

I love your videos about birds and foxes. By any chance in the future, can you do more videos with your foxes?

We had a cockatiel when I was a kid. He was my mom's bird and his name was Harry. I have had dogs, cats, rats, fish... and I will never ever have a bird after Harry. That bird loved my mom, hated everyone else. He would sit on mom's shoulder happily, but if any of us came near his cage he'd hiss at us. I'm sure now that I'm an adult it would be different, but I've just never personally wanted to deal with birds again.

Hi Jessie!! I would really love if you could do the same thing on here for sun conures or green cheek conures. I have both and didn't really realise what I was getting into despite extensive research!! I don't want that to happen to anyone else. I still have my two boys and they're spoiled and well looked after but are definitely much more work than anticipated (not that I mind). It would be good for others to know this too... that just because they're not overly large birds, doesn't mean they're less intelligent or don't need as much attention or stimulation.

Please do more videos with your two foxes! The fox as a pet video was how I found your channel, and since it would be a bad idea to get a fox of my own, I want to live vicariously through you xD

I noticed mine likes to go on the bottom of the cage quite often. But I'm afraid to put food down there because I fear he will poop on it. It's been a real struggle to try to get him to eat fruits and vegetables, any suggestions on how to get him interested? He's adopted, and I don't think anyone put that much effort into making sure he was fed properly. He's a bit underweight so I bought him some special pellets and some high quality seeds. He likes basil and Kale but he's not really interested in much else other than those two things and dried peas. He's also afraid of a lot of the foraging toys I put in his cage.

I have basically the same problem! Except my budgies won't eat anything fresh. I've tried so many ways to convince them to eat fresh fruits and veggies, but none seem to work. Also they aren't too fond of pellets either. I can't be sure if they're eating the pellets or not, of course there are some left, but I'm not sure how to tell.

I sit with my bird while he eats and encourage him to eat certain foods. It seems to help a lot

u might wanna take ur bird to the vet cuz the things u wrote seem to indicate he's sick. (like sitting on the bottom of the cage and not eating properly)

Just took him to the vet less than a week ago and he is in good health. A bit underweight though, who ever had him before me didn't care for him right.

Everybody says that they're super common but, I've never ever seen them as a pet. Infact, half my friends have never even heard of them lol.
