      litterally same i have this small drinking bowl that is about the size of 3/4 of a play dough container and my cockatiel would just go and sit in it for a bath even though the only way she could was by sticking her tail up because she couldn’t fit. Literally two inches away we had a container that was meant as a bath and would fit her perfectly.

      take them into the shower with you and let them hang out on the curtain rod or somewhere out of the water. eventually 1 of them will want to get wet! If they are parent raised birds that may not work but it`s still worth a try. Don`t let them get completely soaked though. I have a hen that would get right under the stream if I let her

    • @mikepepler
      @mikepepler  7 лет назад +7

      I did try that a few times with Pete, but he wasn't keen on the idea. We put them both in their travel cage and shower them with a small hand spray though, in the bath in winter, and outdoors in summer.

    • @mikepepler
      @mikepepler  7 лет назад +28

      +Kait L one of ours, Tom, does that too, if we look at him closely. I reckon he thinks we might eat him... Is your bird hand tame?

    • @kaitlaz123
      @kaitlaz123 7 лет назад +21

      Mike Pepler It mostly depends on his (Jesse) mood. Some days he will eat out of my hand and step up on my shoulder, and other days he hisses when I get anywhere near the cage. We have another (Coco) who basically does everything I ask him to. Jesse just seems to do what he wants most of the time.

    • @mikepepler
      @mikepepler  7 лет назад +19

      We have the same situation - Pete is completely hand-tame, I suspect he thinks he is actually human. But Tom lived in an aviary initially, and while he will take food from our hands, says 'hi' to us, and will come and sit with me, it always has to be on his terms - if I approach him closely he'll hiss at me, though he doesn't really dare to actually peck me.

    Cockatiels really do have personalities. Mine is so clever and funny. She has learned a way to open the cage door, she goes out when she feels like it and when she goes back to sleep or eat she sometimes even tries to close the door 😂 she screams for me when Im out of the room and she flies on my head all the time. She tries to eat my food, when I give her a small taste she ignores it because she wants the whole plate! (i only give her a taste if its not harmful to her) I love her so much hahaha

    He's certainly a white-face, but I'm not sure of any specific sub-type. We just thought he looked the most lively when we were at the shop. They won't wash much in the water, just their feet and faces really - they prefer to go outdoors in the travel cage in the summer and have a shower from a hand sprat then dry off in the sunshine!

    When those little black eyes look at you’d have to have a heart of stone not to be moved. Cockatiels all have their own personality and traits. Some of mine would never have a bath some loved it. The two strongest instincts of a ‘tiel are curiosity and caution, thus it can take time to introduce them to new objects and procedures, patience and allowing their natural curiosity to overcome their caution is the secret to living with them. Never force them to do anything as they may be traumatised and refuse to participate forever. With love and understanding a tiel will enrich your life and return your Love manyfold.

    • @mikepepler
      @mikepepler  6 лет назад +4

      Agree entirely, especially on the curiosity and caution. Any new thing we bring into the room is treated as a lethal threat, then later we'll find them chewing it!

      That's a lot of birds! I think 20 years is average for pet cockatiels, but a friend had one who lived past 30! Our Tom only managed 12 years, but as a white-face I wonder if he was a bit inbred? Our Pete is still fine, now 16 years old! 🙂

    *This is SO ADORABLE! One of my cockatiels shower with me on a perch I made that sticks to the shower wall, I put him up above my head & let him chose if he wants to come down to join. (Never let soap of any kind get on your bird) My other cockatiel I just adopted a month ago, does not like baths, or spray mister, or anything. It's a work in progress! I purchased a new paint roller pan & he is a little more comfortable with it each day. Time will tell!*

      Mike Pepler- literally 10 min after I posted that comment, I tried the spray mist again from a distance, sprayed my indoor plants & myself, then slowly sprayed my cockatiel, once spray every 5 seconds, he finally fluffed up & enjoyed it. Was a relief. I adopted him a month ago & he hasn't bathed once. I try to bath my birds 3-4 times a week for better health & humidity. Such a relief! Thanks for responding!

    When we first got a bird bath we decided to set it up in our house for our cockatiel, it's shallow and made of the same metal as his house. That was probably the happiest day of his life, considering it must have been like a swimming pool in his eyes. I notice that parakeets, and cockatiels don't seem to really splash the water like wild birds do when they bathe. They always look like they can't quite figure it out.

      +rockandrollathon They're great fun, but do remember they can easily live for 20 years, and sometimes 30, so you might have them for a long time! Ours are about 10 years old and still going strong.

      Thanks for the feed back, the age doesnot concern me, as I already have a 3 year old RES turtle I got when it was a baby, so Ill most likely have that for a few decades as well as the cockatiel if I choose to buy one.

      +rockandrollathon great, pleased to hear that. We got two so they don't get lonely when we're both out all day, which happens sometimes. But both boys, as we didn't want chicks...

    My cockatiel Sam, loves a fine mist shower. 🚿

      We do that too, Pete gets a proper wash then. But we keep putting out the dish, as it would be so much easier if he decided to use it properly one day...

    Yes, we find splashing fingers in the water gets them interested too.

    I had a cocktail called Pete. He used to love having a shower every week. Sadly lost him 2 yrs ago if he was still alive he would be heading to 20yrs old.

      Sorry to hear that... Our Pete is about 9 years old, Tom's about 8.

    He's a white-face cockatiel, so has no colours at all - hence no orange cheeks. The only other sign that can be used is the lack of bars on the feathers - he had these as a juvenile, and lost them at his first moult - if he was female he'd have kept the bars.

    Good that you make a big bath and that it is transparent glass, as it is lead free. Pillivuyt or a stone bath would also be lead free. They could take a bath every week, or every other day in the summer.

    true easy cleanup. i dont know if you have noticed, but my cockatiel makes a distinct squatting motion and a grunting like vocalization when she poops.

    For a normal coloured bird, the males have very bright orange cheeks (see Pete in this video), while the females have much paler orange.

    Cockatiels live where there's not much water. They like a little of it , but too much messes up the powder in their feathers that keeps it clean.
    They often just take dust baths in the wild. Some people set up places for their 'tiels to do that!

    • @mikepepler
      @mikepepler  8 лет назад

      +KutWrite that's an interesting idea, maybe I'll give it a try...

    Pete (with the yellow face) is about 7, Tom (white face) is about 6. They'll probably live to 20-30!

    No, I know they aren't really - they wash their feet and faces and that's it. They prefer showers for actual washing, they really get into that - I'll post a video when the weather's nice enough to give them a shower outdoors in their travel cage...

    Tiels don't seem to be big on bathing. Mine was never interested in any bath; he just sort of bathed his head in his water dish. But whenever he was offered a larger tray, even shallow, he ignored it. I've read that tiels in general are not splashy bathers like some birds.

    Food - reward them with their favourite food for being near you. Do they feed from your hand yet? That's the first step...

    I can`t do this with 1 of my hens....she`d drench everything in a 10ft radius! lol. She`s so into it that her bath time is in the shower. I think she`s part duck because if there`s water near she`s got to get into it. When I do dishes I have to give her 10min or so with the faucet before I start or she`ll get into the soapy water.
