    I have 4 tiels and have never seen them do almost half of these. At least I learned mine aren't that territorial. They mostly just yell, steal food off plates, destroy any piece of paper they can find and dump stuff on the ground, preferably when we're working with said stuff. Never thought I'd be parrot-proofing a house.

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  3 года назад +9

      Hey there!
      I'm surprised more haven't cropped up with so many tiels! Although, some do depend on gender and flock dynamics!
      Ours yell lots too, destroy things and dump stuff during work lol. We don't usually let them steal snacks though as some things can be harsh for their health!
      Parrot proofing seems to be a necessity! Ours love going on the curtain pole and chewing the wallpaper/wood. We've had to put woven mats up there to stop them!

    • @kittecat963
      @kittecat963 3 года назад +5

      @@TheParrotTeacher We had to put a net over the bookcase, a net under the stairs, put cardboard or fabric covers under the light fixtures they like to sit (and poop from). There's a part of the house that isn't quite finished yet, which is the part they like to eat - they are using exposed concrete to dull the beaks and one of them likes to eat the wall.
      We got the original 2 from a place that kept them in their cage for years so they now never go in the cage. They were a bonded pair and successfully become parents after we made them a nesting box, so that's where the other 2 come from. The eggs were almost single handedly hatched by the dad, the mom was on them maybe 2 hours a day. Now the mama is uninterested in having more eggs, while the dad is super into the idea, which is where most of the screaming is coming from. He is not a good singer.

      @@kittecat963 lol blimey that sounds like a handful!
      One of our conures was the same. She never got out so we try to remedy that now!
      Might be an obvious one so forgive me if you’ve tried, but have you tried stationing training to get them to go to a play stand or place on que! May save you some hassle with the netting!
      The boys as naughty as they are generally come down when they get around the rail defences and we notice!
      Lol probably good for her as her body is the one that has to take all the strain of it!

    • @kittecat963
      @kittecat963 3 года назад +4

      @@TheParrotTeacher we tried training them, but they aren't interested. Since they have each other to keep company they don't want to learn any tricks, and the kids were raised by them to be free thinkers too. They used to stay in one room but once the babies started flying they would bump into the walls so we moved them to the lounge area and they now have free reign of the house. It's not that bad, just took some getting used to. We've had them for 3 years now and the biggest adjustment was learning to hide important things. We love them despite everything!

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  9 месяцев назад +1

      They don’t conform to hierarchical structures as they are a flock species!
      They do however have individual differences and personalities and these are usually resolved by distance or squabbling. In the home provided it doesn’t get out of hand both are fine to allow.

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  3 года назад +3

      Hey Jamie,
      Sadly in our experience that doesn’t usually mean going no.2!
      Parrots usually do this to either get ready to fly, re set their feathers or relax! It could be your parrot has learned to link the behaviours or is chilling so decides to drop one!

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  3 года назад +4

      @NightMare Hey there,
      That's interesting, however it's not how our birds or any of our clients do it!
      It could be a learned behaviour or more likely they are preparing to fly or to move (hence the wing movement) then that is triggering the poo response.

    • @davidp4180
      @davidp4180 3 года назад +4

      @@TheParrotTeacher I've also experienced the wing stretch, then poop. When he is out of his cage and he just randomly stretches but doesn't fly, he then drops it. I would say it is nearly every time since we started letting him out of the cage at an early age. We have always known it as a signal that it is coming.

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  3 года назад +3

      Hey David,
      Thanks for the comment!
      I have to admit I'm finding this unusual, as from our own experiences + loads of others (I even did a poll) it just isn't the case!
      However I can't argue with lots of people seeing the behaviour pattern. It's possible it just depends on the individual or other factors that just haven't occurred in our circumstances!

      Hey S M
      That is carefresh. It's one of the safe substrates you can use. It's not safe for them to ingest no. If they ate a tiny bit it'd do no harm, but any bird that regularly eats toys or substrates etc should be discouraged.
      Shredding on the other hand is natural and perfectly fine. Our birds routinely chew their bedding, but they never actually eat any, just spit it out.

    is it normal for an 8 month old new cockatiel to be really tired and not energetic during the day? while i’m in school, my family claims she chirps a lot for about an hour but quiets down again for the rest of the day

    • @TheParrotTeacher

      Hey Aoife,
      I'd look at other factors in relation to that. Is she eating/drinking ok? Does she have lots of fun things to do in and out of her cage?
      It's also possible she's calling for you then realising you're not about, so quiets down until you get back. Does she get energetic when you return? Do your family interact with her?
      Cockatiels commonly like to nap during the day too!

      Her energy stays the same when I come home and she tends to only want to leave her cage when she’s on me, otherwise she’ll just sit on the cage door and nap. My family come in and talk to her while in her cage but they are too nervous to let her out while i’m not around.
      I suppose it may be because there is no toys for her to play with outside her cage so she gets tired out of boredom..

      Briefly put:
      Do target training - it's one of the best forms of training for parrots, scared ones especially.

    No angry hiss of doom? I've seen it in videos, pretty sure the translation on that is get away from me or I will bite you. Never seen Buddy do it. He has never done the beak tap territorial thin either. Love when he opens his wings a little when singing lol. He doesn't open them as much as your boys do though. He does do a downward eyeballing, with his head side to side. Pretty sure that is curiosity. It happens a lot when I am doing something near the floor with toys, or treats. My budgies do that a lot as well.
    Still working on the scritches. He bows his head a lot. I move my fingers towards him he backs away. When I approach with my face and give scritches using my nose, he loves it. I think I just have a weirdo lol. We are still working on 6 years of abuse issues from his previous owner. He might get there one day. If not I get a good smell of him. I am sure that makes me weird, but I love how he smells lol. He used to reek like cologne. His previous owner was either spraying it on Buddy, or just used so damn much of it in his room the bird was marinated it in. That took just over a month to get rid of the smell on Buddy. He has respiratory issues from it as well. I was worried I might have to clip his wings because of it.

      We love that behaviour too, the wings are the cutest. The tapping is mostly a Fish thing, Chip only does it on occasion!
      It's possible he just likes your nose more as it's like a beak to them! Just keep trying though he may decide its ok!
      That's pretty poor of his prior owner :( But at least he doesn't have to deal with it now!
      It's also not weird at all, we like how our little ones smell too lol

    So helpful! My tiel has no problem stepping up, but when it’s time to put him back in his cage he does The Maw+hisses+pecks at our fingers. I let him out but I’ve been too scared to put him back in his cage, so my mom’s been doing it so far haha. He seems to intentionally miss and peck *between* her fingers at the counter, and if he does make contact my mom says it doesn’t hurt and he’s never drawn blood, so he doesn’t do it as hard as I’m sure he could.
    We give him 3-4 hours of uncaged time in our big bathroom; he alternates between singing at his reflection while on the counter, and snacking in his cage-even though he could fly back and forth on his own, he chirps until someone gives him a hand and puts him in the cage, and again when he’s ready to go back to the counter. By the last hour he’s perched on a shelf and sleeping, but gets aggressive when we try to get him to step up and put him back in his cage.
    Would increasing his uncaged time make him less aggressive when it’s time to go back in the cage, or maybe he’s cranky getting woken up so we need to put him back *before* he starts falling asleep? Appreciate any advice you can give :)

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  Год назад +3

      Hey there!
      It's good that he's warning you rather than actively trying to hurt or draw blood. As you say it means he's moderating how hard he's biting and basically just telling you he doesn't want to do what you want him to do!
      Getting him back in before he starts feeling sleepy sounds like a good plan. I'd be annoyed if I was relaxing and someone interrupted me!
      Work on more training with him too, make sure you're giving him a treat every time he goes back in and also not immediately withdrawing your attention from him when he does go in. Do some targeting and step up training too!
      You could increase his time out if you'd like, or give him some more activities both in and out of the cage such as foraging! You could also mix up his outings a bit, so it's a little unpredictable as to when he will be going in and out!

      @@TheParrotTeacher Thanks for the advice! I ended up convincing my parents to give the cockatiel to a younger family who picked him up the other day :’) They don’t have dogs (unlike my parents) so he’ll have more flying space plus two sons to play with, and my parents simply can’t give him the time/attention he needs. My father randomly brought him home from work one day because his coworker’s living conditions changed; I think he thought he could just leave him in the cage and didn’t realize all the dietary needs/bonding/intellectual stimulation tiels have until I spelled it out for him.
      This tiel is so smart, he liked to cuddle, and he sang all the time; it was hard to see him go but I know he’ll get the attention & love he deserves with that family. Love this so much. JUST got my cockatiel yesterday (hes only 5 months old) and so far he is the best. Already beak grinding, preening, calm. Thank god.
    Wanted to know if you had any advice on differenciating between femalr and male tiels?

      I have a video on that topic along with loads of other cockatiel related ones!
      Generally a dna test is the best way!

      @@TheParrotTeacher that is awesome! Do you also have a video on which specific brand of seed mix and pellets you buy? I'm trying to get him/her onto roudybush and off of an all seed diet.

      @TheParrotTeacher  4 месяца назад +2

      I actually have loads of diet videos and a diet playlist!
      Regarding pellets watch my video interview “the truth about pellets” and my “parrot mythbusting podcast” both of those give my view on good diet and pellets!
