    as a kid, i only had lego batman on the ds and assumed it was the only version of the game., played it for hours with my brother as a kid, and still think its the better version when it comes to artstyle. theres just something about the more cel shaded artstyle of the game that makes me love it (seriously, the cathedral levels just look so good in that version!

    I think Lego Batman was one of the first games I remember playing. The first Lego game for sure. I didn't know enough English as a kid to understand what "Load game" meant, so every time I opened the game I had to start all over again. I lost count of how many times I beat up Clayface. (Also, i was afraid of Batman's red suit because I thought it was the devil)

    • @BaneShake
      @BaneShake  29 дней назад +8

      This game, in any version, was so great for giving everyone very specific and nostalgic memories. And I can see it; the red batsuit would look very Devilish, even before accounting for the heat abilities.

    Actually, I believe the Scarface piece is the old "microfigure" mold that was used in many of the old Lego board games, but I could be mistaken
    The new microfigure mold is more akin to an actual mini figure, while the old one looks more like a 1x1 brick with minifigure attributes, like a head and molded leg separation
    Scarface himself actually has arms on his piece too in this game, making him look more akin to the new baby minifigure mold, although this game was made like, a decade and a half before the minifigure baby was made

    • @BaneShake
      @BaneShake  28 дней назад +1

      He actually predates the original microfigure by 3-ish years, if I remember correctly.

      Oh really?
      My bad then, thanks for letting me know

    • @BaneShake
      @BaneShake  28 дней назад +4

      No worries! You’re definitely spot-on with the observational details. Shame we still haven’t gotten a real physical minifigure to know how Lego would do him for real. My custom physical version uses a Nexo Knights robot frame to have decent proportions/means of gun holding.

    • @TylertheCC1010fan
      @TylertheCC1010fan 26 дней назад +2

      interestingly it ends up looking very similar to the lego baby, which it predates by like a decade.

    • @TylertheCC1010fan
      @TylertheCC1010fan 26 дней назад +1

      @@BaneShake my guess is it would be the lego baby body, with a new version of the baby head featuring a scaled down version of the fedora piece built into the mould, like they did with the classic spaceman baby's in some of the collectable minifigure series, and they likely wouldn't be able to do anything with the gun.

    This game is most likely based on the Batman animated series but with inspiration from the original Batman movies in reversed order, but the characters' costumes were actually based on their comic counterparts while Harley Quinn, Two-Face, Mr. Freeze and Clayface look more reassemble from the animated show, except Killer Moth who never appear in the show

    the PC/ Console version of LEGO Batman 1 was known to be rushed, which explains the infamously small roster, Azreal, Huntress and Black Mask having their parts (minus weapons) being put into the character creator being unlocked as you progress through the game, Harvey Bullock getting completely scrapped, with the only surviving evidence being an image of a render in a currently unknown book, that was posted online, and character data in the files for a Riot Policeman, that when put into the game via usage of hacks or mods, results in a character with a complete icon, model, walking animations, an entirely unique baton and shield weapon, and attack animations for it, that was likely meant to be a villain story exclusive enemy like the SWAT and Police Marksman, also the design for the DS Demolition Suit is the original design, that was scrapped from the PC/ Console versions.
    It's intresting to wonder if some of the DS roaster characters, such as the extra villians were meant to be in the PC/ Console verison at some point and what they could've done, like could Firefly have had the heat immunity ability? and give that game mechanic more of a purpose outside of a single level, were Two-Face's goons meant to appear in the final hero Riddler level?, if these other villians were suppsoed to be in both versions how would they be unlocked, how were Azreal, Huntress and Black Mask meant to be unlocked, was Black Mask going to be tied to the red bricks like Hush with the hostages or Ra's with minkits?

    To give you all an idea of what the DS Harry Potter games are like
    -Years 1 to 4: Isometric 3D with 3D models (like the GBA lego Star Wars games). The main gameplay occur on the touch-screen while the top screen is the map. You do the spells by brawing simbols and Wingardium Leviosa is part of those spells. Also, has minigames were you have to follow a spark through gears with the stylus, or the potion making minigame for exemple.
    - Years 5 to 7: More like the standard DS Lego Games affair (full 3D, uses top screen for the gameplay with the bottom screen for the character switching and the spell selection).
    I don't remember all of the details (been years since I played), so feel free to bring precisions/correction to my points.
    Good luck on Lego Batman 2 (if it ever happens)!

    • @BaneShake
      @BaneShake  28 дней назад +2

      Spot on. Handheld HP 5-7 is essentially the structure of the earliest Lego titles; Hogwarts is just a hub akin to the Batcave or the Mos Eisley Cantina instead of being fully explorable like its big sister port, not even having individual doors for all levels, so it’s technically small even by standards like THIS handheld port. Levels are pretty decent, though, and the dueling club has some novelty for a while, but definitely gets redundant with the sheer number of characters to duel.

    I was, and pretty much still am, a very casual fan of Batman (perhaps one day i might take this interest further). But I had lego batman 1 for the wii, and it was an absolute icon of my childhood. I remember being mind blown that the villians had a whole campaign. It always felt like a secret extra game, like I was getting a whole other experience that I wasn't expecting. And I adored its sequel too which, at 10 years old, served as one of the first open world games I ever played. Oh yes. The number of hours I put into this as a kid. Growing up, I didn't own a console so my childhood exclusively consisted of handheld games and handheld ports like this one. Of the original big three TT LEGO games, this one was always my favorite too despite being a massive Star Wars nerd growing up because the idea of having villain levels was so cool. It really made the game feel special. I even have two copies of it because my brother wasn't interested in keeping any of our ds games so I have the whole collection now.

    i didn't realise other people knew about this game! i have a copy of it somewhere in my house but god knows where it's gone in the past... 10-12 years since i last played it. i have clearer memories of playing the xbox 360 version of the original game with my dad. that, and i was way more invested in the DS port of lego star wars: the complete saga anyway

    From what I’ve heard, LB1 console had a shit development by a skeleton crew. Some of the characters found in the DS version had all their parts available in the character creator.
    Both of those points along with LB1 console having the smallest roster of any lego game makes me believe a lot of the DS exclusives only missed out because they didn’t have time or resources to make high quality’s assets for them.

    • @TylertheCC1010fan
      @TylertheCC1010fan 26 дней назад

      Azreal and Huntress have all their parts in the console's character creator minus their weapons, and
      Black Mask is also in there, though I don't know what the consitions are to unlock those parts are, it's either tied to getting all minkits, getting all characters or 100% progress, I never got Black Mask's parts or to 100%, as I was never able to get that one minikit during the snow sliding section right before the boss fight in the final hero Penquin level, which also meant no Ra's al Ghul, so i'm not sure what of the 3 things Black Mask is tied to, my best guess is that it's all characters unlocked, additionally relatively recently a render of a console version of Harvey Bullock in a currently unknown book, made it's way online, which seems to confirm that at one, he was meant to be on the console roster, likely along with Azreal, Huntress and Black Mask (since their parts are in the character creator), and the unused Riot Policeman found in the game files, as when modded into the game, not only does it have a character icon, and walking animations (which stuff like the random civilian models don't even have when made playable), but also an entirely unique weapon, a baton and shield, but also attack animations for them, and i think he also breaks apart upon death, my guess is that not only was he meant to be playable, and unlike complete random out of nowhere inclusions roster filler that aren't even encountered in the levels like the Yeti, Clown Goon or the biggest waste of a slot, the Military Policeman, the Riot Policeman was most likely going to be another higher tier villain story enemy that potentially would've shown up alongside SWAT or Police Marskmen, and could've given more purpose to characters like Bane and Killer Croc being able to grapple enemies, as there would be a tougher melee enemy to fight.

    • @frogmouth2
      @frogmouth2 26 дней назад

      @@TylertheCC1010fan it’s also of note that we know of some similar cases in LB2 with superboy being found in the code and vixen’s torso in the character creator. I’m sure there’s some non-dc examples I don’t know of but it seams like a rule that they handed over any resources like character designs long before Implementing them into the console release.

    Dude, you just brought back my nostalgia with this video. Lego Batman on DS was part of my first ten DS games I ever played AND was the first introduction to Batman + DC as a whole. Sadly my first Lego game was Lego Star Wars II DS which was... a very very buggy mess of a game (plus that annoying ewok level with those impossible jumps). Lego Batman DS on the other hand, now that was an incredible game, managed to beat both hero and villian stoires though got stuck on the villian hunt mode, but I was 5 - 7 years old then. Thank you for bringing some nostalgic joy to me, and you''ve definately earned a new subcriber from me. I look forwards to see you future content. :3

      @@BaneShake Oh, would it be okay to ask about how you create your content. I hope to become a content creator one day and I always try to ask content creators I enjoy / respect about how they record and edit their videos. If I'm asking too much of you then I'm sorry for being a bother.

    • @BaneShake
      @BaneShake  13 дней назад +1

      @@MonoHerobrine No bother at all! I do it in a few steps:
      1) Most crucially, when covering a game, is actually playing the game in the first place. Recording footage is easy on new consoles, which typically have built-in recording suites. When I cover games from before that, typically PS3, I have to plug the console's HDMI cord into a capture card and run it through OBS on my computer to record. For videos like this, which cover handhelds like Nintendo DS or Game Boy, emulation and screen recording is the easiest, and doesn't even need a fancy device, as most computers can handle the simpler emulation needs for those.
      2) Writing the script tends to happen a minor amount as I play, and the majority once I'm done.
      3) Recording for my voiceover is done through Audacity. I have a decent mic now, a Yeti, but even budget mics can get the job done. If using a mic that doesn't have some degree of "cancelling" noise from around you built in, it actually may benefit you to record with the mic in a closet so that surrounding objects absorb the echos the mic might pick up from empty surrounding walls. In audacity, you can also leave about five seconds "recording" before speaking to have a selection of background noise that you can set for noise reduction.
      4) I used to edit through iMovie, but also used Windows equivalents at times, but have used the free tier of Davinci resolve for several years now. If you're completely unfamiliar, something like iMovie will be more beginner friendly and a great way to teach yourself the basics, but it will be comparatively limited for more complex options.
      Some things to keep in mind:
      1) Quality footage requires a good amount of storage. A video like this alone takes up a few gigs, and of course, that's JUST for the video file. All of my Lego Batman footage, both the PS3 and DS versions, is sitting at about 140 gb, and I only upload in 1080p. People who record in 2k or 4k will need monumentally more than that.
      2) Audio quality will be way more important than video quality for viewers. If it's crystal clear visuals but there's mic hissing or audio crackling, people will click away fast.
      3) Finally, and this is the one most crucial: it is a learning process, and it's okay to not know how to do everything other people can do. Do not beat yourself up for not feeling like it is perfect when you start. Do the best you can, teach yourself as you can, and like any other skill, it will get better over time.

    Dude I played the crap outta this one as a kid and 100%ed it again just last year haha ❤️
    Though in my more recent playthrough I couldn't shake the feeling that it's all so painfully linear. Like even when you know what suits or setpieces you'll need to build and where they are, if you just wanna zoom through a level (like maybe you remember where a collectible is and just wanna snag that) it's so darn samey! Build this, run in a circle to grab the studs. Interact with it, watch the scene, fight a guy. Walk through, fight a guy, break stuff, run in a circle. It was never worth it to try mixing up the combat with jump moves, or to try backing away to send in a batarang/card, which really didn't help the feel. It was particularly weird to stand on a button just for the pieces for a switch to appear.. Then to build and use the switch just to make a two-person pull bar thing show up.. And only now do you get the ladder or travel chute. They often added these weird, redundant steps haha ^^'
    Other than that, I totally love the style and themes, the different sides to each scenario, the moves and costumes switching around from the other version, etc! Any complaints I have were things I hardly cared about as a kid, and the game stood out enough in my mind to call me back after a solid decade :3
    I still always wish the unique DS versions of games would receive ports to other consoles, like the unique CoD campaigns, Metroids, Marios & Zeldas, Transformers, etc etc. I just really want versions that are rebuilt for one screen and a controller in the hands, but I recognize the lack of a real market for that. At least Konami, Capcom, Sega, and some others are willing to bundle and resell packs of their older games on modern platforms :3
    Edit: eyyy, you addressed some of it! Also solid video man!! ^^
