Rewatching this episode I'm still amazed that Sal didn't even mention the other side of the story with kid Loki breaking Thor out of prison and orchestrating his death it was a million times better than the main Fear Itself story
I know this event was kinda hooky, and it had a lot of problems with all the tie-ins, but this event was going on when I first picked up marvel comics. It really got me into mainstream comics, so it has a special place on my shelf. Thanks for the video!
As much as Sal hates Tie-ins I picked up the hardcover of Fear Itself SPiderman for like 10$ Canadian and was ACTUALLY surprised with how much I enjoyed Yosts little side tale
Since the beginning of this back issue I couldn't stop thinking about Earth's Mightiest Heroes, that show is the reason i'm into comics and also the reason im watching this now. Now excuse me as I binge watch that show right now
This is one of the rare videos that I disagree with Sal saying that the tie ins are useless, the Kid Loki storyline in Journey Into Mystery is the BEST part about this event
I really enjoyed Fear Itself. It felt focused and less like editorial told Fraction to make it encompass the whole universe. I also love Matt Fraction. Satellite Sam and Sex Criminals are so amazing.
I am from Taiwan, and I love your back Issue episodes! I listen to when when I drive to work, and it's length is perfect. I have learned a lot about Marvel and DC Comic story backgrounds from your channel (also Marvel explain and Comistorian.... but I don't like marvel explain so much now because its episode length has shortened so much). Plus listening to you guys talking about comic is hilarious! Also I am looking forward to "Getting Physical with Eason" :-) Keep up the good work!
I've been marathoning back issues vids and I love them. One thing in this vid that i would like to correct you guys on is, Teddy roosevelt our 26th pres., believed in carrying a "big stick" as to intimidate other countries and showing the military strength of U.S. FDR, was the 32nd pres. who said, "nothing to fear but fear itself".
One of the best Back issues ever, Ben was on point with all his jokes Sal's face trying to describe that Odin is a total dick almost all the time. Ben's smirk at some of the dumb parts had me cracking up. Seriously this was one of the best. Thanks guys
15:29 - 15:55 This pretty much sums up the Lee/Kirby years when Odin had a huge stick up his ass when Thor had a thing for (Nurse) Jane Foster and Odin, as a result, ended up pimping out Sif as a "viable alternative" that kept Thor in Asgard for awhile. Great acting, guys!
My LCS had Matt Fraction as a guest speaker after this event came out. According to him the reason for "killing" Bucky was to get Steve back in his Cap role for the movie. Marvel wanted Steve Rogers as Cap again so new readers would not be confused as to why Bucky was Cap and not Steve. The whole reason this event happened was for a movie.
Hey Sal, while listening to Ultimatum I was pining for the "New Universe" by Marvel in the 80's. A whole new world that was grounded in the modern day. It had two decent events and a few titles that I saw through to the end. And if you can believe such things was the basis for the tv show "Heroes."
me: hey sal...do planet hu-- sal: NOOOOOOOOPE. pushing that shit back another week lol, but really. a lot of people that i know hated fear itself. i rahter enjoyed this event. always great to hear your thoughts on it. keep em coming guys
Fear Itself was great fun. Cap re-establishing himself as worthy of the hammer is always a wlcome sight to me. I like when he returned Mjiolnir to Odin. The crossovers were pretty dumb, especially the three-part Hulk vs. Dracula. Such a huge build-up and in the end... nothing. I did like the Ironman aftermath with Grey Gargoyle and Odin. Odin's lesson was fantastic. Finally, I liked the Fear Itself "afterparty" event with Valkyrie better than the event itself.
So good going back and watching these ones. Get to relive the old days. Also, did anyone read the journey into mystery tie in to this one? About how kid loki re wrote the history of the serpent so that during his battle with Thor, there was a something he saw which triggered doubt at a key moment so that thor could slay the serpent?
Im not a Marvel guy, so I had no idea just how closely the whole "death" of Cap leading to Bucky Cap, leading to the return of Cap, leading to Bucky the Secret Agent mirrored Morrisons Batman Reborn into Grayson. Cap was even lost in time too, right? Shameless.
World breaker hulk? Call me back when there's wind breaker hulk...That was meant as a reference to apparel. Get your mind out of the gutter for once. Another riproaringrag-I-wantorockandrollallnightandpartyever-reeday-ing episode. Kudos.
i have heard at least some people talking about this event so it's not the ultimate forgotten event is just slightly forgotten, the true forgotten event is chaos war, That is really the forgotten event nobody talks about that one, nobody gives a fuck about that one Lol
Okay... in Norse Mythology Thor will be killed by a giant serpent named Jörmungandr after he defeats it... in some versions it is similar to the centaur of Hercules, where his blood is venomous. But in the Norse story of Ragnarok, this happens during battle and once Jörmungandr is dead... Thor walks nine paces then dies.
TerminalNoob There's a significant Marvel event we haven't gotten to, and it isn't quite an event, but it took place around the time of all of these. One day we'll get there, and that's my favorite.
I hate to be THAT guy, but the "big stick" quote and the "fear itself" quote were from different Roosevelts. I loved this video though, probably my favorite Back Issues so far. The "Odin's heart grew three sizes that day" comment had me busting out laughing. I'd love to see you do more of the cosmic events, maybe Annihilation or The End.
Yeah when Ben said the stick thing in my head I was like "Are you referencing 'walk softly and carry a big stick?' Cuz that's the wrong Roosevelt" but at this point I was only half paying attention to Ben so I thought perhaps I'd missed something. But no, he was just mixed up. Or maybe he knew it was the wrong Roosevelt and he had a funny joke lined up for when we called him on it, and Sal and I just dropped the ball?
Ethan Marsh To be honest, history was my worst class back in school. I'm just happy I was able to remember that A Roosevelt said it. But yeah, just goes to show that this stuff isn't scripted at all.
This crossover/event ruined me from comics for a long while! The writing, Bucky dying...the Thor thing...the beginning bugged so much.....hated this. "Letters Page", Sal, was their a crossover or event that took you away from comics? Cause this one for sure did that to me.
Ya know, nine times out of ten, the way you tell the stories is way better than the stories themselves.
That means a lot, thank you!
i know I'm quite off topic but does anyone know a good website to watch newly released movies online?
@Roger Layton Flixportal :D
@Ephraim Cash thanks, I signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there =) Appreciate it !!
@Roger Layton glad I could help xD
Rewatching this episode I'm still amazed that Sal didn't even mention the other side of the story with kid Loki breaking Thor out of prison and orchestrating his death it was a million times better than the main Fear Itself story
"Shut the fuck up, Odin!" - my new Catchphrase of 2016. Thanks guys!
Turns out Cap would not lift Mjolnir until Avengers: Endgame.
Fun going back to eatch these videos!🤘
Ragnorak 2: electric boogaloo
+Nick (sawnick802) YOU ARE CORRECT SIR
Really four years ago?
Odin proved right here that Ultron is still the best father around. ;]
ONmedz ha!
your discussion of the crack in Caps shield is pretty damn good. and poignant. they probably just thought it was cool
The thing with fear itself is that it is ignored now...it had no consequence.
dragonmares59110 Yeah. Literally nothing stuck.
I know this event was kinda hooky, and it had a lot of problems with all the tie-ins, but this event was going on when I first picked up marvel comics. It really got me into mainstream comics, so it has a special place on my shelf. Thanks for the video!
My pleasure, Skyler. Thanks for sharing!
Teddy said the Big Stick thing.
Maybe he's talking to that cane Thor used to have. This explains why Teddy Roosevelt is such a badass. he's Thor.
Now excuse me as I binge watch that show right now
The Heroes for Hire tie in to this event is amazing, I enjoyed it a lot more than the actual event
Man! You guys make Fear Itself relevant again! I will probably read it again. Like always great video!
Kevin Bravo Thanks, Kevin!
I will never get enough of that Fugitive reference.
***** Neither can we. ;)
This is my favorite Ben episode. Every joke seems to land really well.
Bought trade count since I started watching Back Issues: 20
Ragnarok 2 this time it's personal
sals prediction about someone picking up mjolnir in avengers 2 was right, just the wrong person. good call sal.
The fact that you're not sitting down is giving me a "disturbance in the force"-type of feeling. It's just wrong.
Tuuralihn I know. We'll be back in chairs soon. They put them away for the season.
This is one of the rare videos that I disagree with Sal saying that the tie ins are useless, the Kid Loki storyline in Journey Into Mystery is the BEST part about this event

Scott Duckworth Gotta agree with you. I think it's one of our strongest.
I think thor 4 should be fear itself. Makes sense after ragnarock and all the infinity stuff.
It's been a year. I've watched this countless times. And only now have I realized that they're talking about the wrong Roosevelt.
Joshua Pong Weak.
Civil War, Dark Reign, Siege, and then this? It's… too much
This is the event that got me into comics
Nice!
I just got the Fear Itself graphic novel yesterday from Books - A - Million.
More back issues please^^ off the rack and the other segments are great but this is AWESOME!^^
I appreciate it!
Thank you sooooo much for doing this story! I recall starting this arc a few years ago but I just could not get through it.
I have watched all your back issues. Very entertaining guys.
Cap moment with the hammer was really cool, was kind of lost on this video, haha
"Were all Avengers" That could totally be a Marvel Motto... lol
Hey Sal, while listening to Ultimatum I was pining for the "New Universe" by Marvel in the 80's. A whole new world that was grounded in the modern day. It had two decent events and a few titles that I saw through to the end. And if you can believe such things was the basis for the tv show "Heroes."
Marvel also kind of tried to bridge it a little with Hickman's Avengers launch. But it was a neat idea that didn't have enough time.
I didn't know this existed.
me: hey sal...do planet hu--
sal: NOOOOOOOOPE. pushing that shit back another week
lol, but really. a lot of people that i know hated fear itself. i rahter enjoyed this event. always great to hear your thoughts on it. keep em coming guys
WORLD WAR HULK IS MY JOKE, so stop.
buku43v3r hey pal. i see no copy right infringement here
great back issues, you guys rock, i learned allot. Ahhhhh Wonder Years.
Glad you dug it!
Is that outro new? I really like it. Also another great episode. That part about Cap breaking his own shield was hilarious.
SuperAnDERP Thanks! I forget I have that version of the song, but I'm trying to keep it consistently.
Sweet something I haven't already read. Now i can feel like ethan and ben but with better facial hair lol
Bryan Robinson Proof.
Carry a big stick was Teddy Roosevelt.
25:28 wow, this comic really predicted 2021
Fear Itself was great fun. Cap re-establishing himself as worthy of the hammer is always a wlcome sight to me. I like when he returned Mjiolnir to Odin.

You should do the Clone Saga on Back issues.
That's a big one on my list ;)
ErrorMacro What about "The Real Clone Saga"? It's a retelling the way the story was originally meant to be.
ComicPOP! Hulk looks like bald mkx jax from mortal kombat
aint this the story that made unstoppable colossus
the deadpool tie in is amazing
Another great episode. :) I know Sal doesn't enjoy the X-Men, so I think it would be fun to do something like Messiah CompleX or Schism
I sure own Schism. That's a good one.
You should do an episode on some Matt Fraction works or just his run on Hawkeye.
How can I get you guys to do Loki's JiM run like honestly it's my favorite Marvel story of all time (and is better than the main Seige story imho)
The way Gillen handled Loki during his Thor/JiM run was fantastic. So much so the actor who plays him praised him for the chcharactisation.
Big stick was Teddy not Frankie
FDR actually does come back in the Marvel universe XD.
Hulk is not really a monster. This has been established hundreds of times. Now if we are talking about Ultimate Hulk that's a different story.
ultimate hulk is just an asshole
***** Yep.
Lol! Great stuff guys. Congrats on 5000.
wvang0013 Thanks!
great video, keep it up
Why wasn't this about the Midgard serpent???
Also, can you guys get Sue Storms range? Cause I'm all about the range, Sue Storm!
aww come on Colossus makes a pact with Cyttorak and becomes Juggernaut himself!
Can you guys do a video on all the current DC Earth One graphic novels?
You probably wouldn't want me to... ;)
Shameless.
tanks firing hammers that's a million dollars idea Ben
Great episode.
Thanks, Tim
fuck yeah, more Back Issues!
slayerking88 Fuck yeah!
+ComicPOP I have this comic in my MARVEL Encyclopedia but you actually make me want to READ IT. You guys accomplished a mission I couldn't. Wizards.
You guys are awesome.
Story is not that great but like a [good] summer blockbuster it was visually stunning and action-packed and I just had fun reading it.
GREAT VIDEO GUYS !!!!
World breaker hulk? Call me back when there's wind breaker hulk...That was meant as a reference to apparel. Get your mind out of the gutter for once.
Another riproaringrag-I-wantorockandrollallnightandpartyever-reeday-ing episode. Kudos.
lol Thanks, Vacay
Please do Onslaught.
I want to be the breaker of balls.
I'm pretty sure that I'm already the breaker of punctuality
Mercy's Little Show rofl
The only thing to fear is quotes themselves.
Aww you didn't talk about unstoppable colossus...
you should show us more of the pictures
Don't know if you'll see this but I have come from the future to tell you that Sal was half right about Cap and Mjolnir. Just wrong movie.
Do these guys have a podcast?
Odin WAS a dick in this! Glad i wasnt the only one who thought so.
i have heard at least some people talking about this event so it's not the ultimate forgotten event is just slightly forgotten, the true forgotten event is chaos war, That is really the forgotten event nobody talks about that one, nobody gives a fuck about that one Lol
will y'all do Injustice?! love that book
would be cool if they had kept the crack in the shield
+NERD ParadoxHD Agreed!

But in the Norse story of Ragnarok, this happens during battle and once Jörmungandr is dead... Thor walks nine paces then dies.
I'm guessing thor used too much energy and died from a mixture of exhaustion and the explosion
Again sorry for my short attention span, but is that hobgoblin book behind ben and sal,his own series or what is that? Someone please explain lol.
fear itself : maximum ragnorak
Is there a breaker of wind.....hehehe
Charles Taliaferro toad
Ragnarok 2: Raggle Rock ...... I'll... I'll show myself the door.
Gabriel Otero ...god damn it
I have a tattoo based off a visual ad of this event
Cool you guys really know your shit man awesome.
We appreciate it, Dorian!
Sooooo....it's The Sinestro Corp War....?
Guys Love ur show, I am outside US and want to buy physical copies of comics. Can u suggest some retailers with international shipping? Thanks
William Chance Agreed.
***** Thank you! I wish I could, but Amazon has great deals on trade paperbacks.
Thnx guys
Which country are you from, Bisina?
Sri Lanka
In this story, was Odin being a tsundere????
The winterized soilder
Hey guys, i just wanted to know, youve covered most of the lasr decades Marvel Events. What do you think is the best?
1. Avengers Disassembled 2. World War Hulk 3. Fear Itself.
My top 3 right there.
TerminalNoob There's a significant Marvel event we haven't gotten to, and it isn't quite an event, but it took place around the time of all of these. One day we'll get there, and that's my favorite.
You guys plan on doing Infinity at all? I know that book is huge so it'd prob have to be a realllllly long episode or split up.
TV Little House Comics Annihilation?
Do Identity Crisis! Or COIE!
The phrase about the big stick is from teddy roosevelt, not fdr.
Awesome
ComicPOP indeed
>Goes back and watches old Back Issues episodes
>Sal talks about Cap lifting Mjolnir
> Endgame spoilers!
I hate to be THAT guy, but the "big stick" quote and the "fear itself" quote were from different Roosevelts. I loved this video though, probably my favorite Back Issues so far. i had a question i just picked up the civil war book and i didnt see cap die does he die in the next book or what?
Yeah he dies literally the next issue in his own comic. I think it's Cap #25.
This crossover/event ruined me from comics for a long while! The writing, Bucky dying...the Thor thing...the beginning bugged so much.....hated this. "Letters Page", Sal, was their a crossover or event that took you away from comics? Cause this one for sure did that to me.
I feel like the obvious Clone Saga or One More Day storylines are going to be the answer to that question. o-o
Bless you.
