This episode is right up there with "Those Old Scientists" as my favorite episodes of SNW S2. As someone who's loved both Star Trek and musical stories since childhood, I'll admit At first I was hesitant and worried about combining the two together. When the first song began I was like "Oh god, it begins." But as I listened and watched everyone give their 100% and I really enjoyed it and was blown away by how amazing and brilliant everyone and everything in this episode truly was. It's happened to Matilda, Back to the Future, will Star Trek get the same treatment? Who knows?
I adore this episode, but these songs are a culmination of the character work that's been done over two seasons. The songs wouldn't have the same impact unless we'd seen Uhura and Hemmer together or La'an and alternate-timeline Kirk or Spock and Chapel. It would be hard to fit all that backstory into one musical.
I admit, I shed a few tears of happiness seeing this number. We’ve seen dedication and the emotional connection each crew has to their respective ships/station, and it’s usually portrayed as solemn duty and quiet pride. What’s nice about this anomalous musical reality is that it shows how much the crew really does care for each other and how much proud they are to be on the crew of the Enterprise. Anson Mount’s Pike may be my favorite captain now… not only does he have such a unique arc knowing when and how he’s going to die and trying to make every day count, but I loved hearing him sing, “I’m so proud to be your Captain.”
The SNW writers and showrunners never cease to amaze that they continually show that they can do whatever weird ass concept they can come up with and make it work. This was so much better than i was expecting.
I was really afraid that the crossover episode with Lower Decks would be awful, and it was FABULOUS! These writers and showrunners really CAN do anything.
Going into this episode; and as someone who doesn't care much for musicals, I had very low expectations. While it won't make my top 5 favorite episodes of SNW, I really enjoyed this episode
@@Kerensey Honestly, that crossover episode with Lower Decks was what made me start the franchise (which I knew next to nothing about) so I'm glad they did it. Liked the episode so much that it made me watch both seasons back to back, and I'm afraid I need more now.

My 11 year old heard the soundtrack today while she had breakfast. She normally avoids TNG/VOY etc when her dad has it on. Not only did she watch this clip (multiple times) but has been singing it constantly ever since. She's also said "I now really, really want to watch this episode" Good job writers
@scottreacher4620 she's only heard the songs and seen the online clips but she's driving her brother nuts singing it (I join in obviously 😁) She totally LOVES the songs, she's virtually word perfect already and she'll get to watch it in a few days when we get back from visiting family.
@scottreacher4620 well - she watched it last night with the family. And then I found her watching it again this afternoon 🤣 And doing the dance steps from the finale on the bridge 😁
Bohemian Rhapsody is similar and certainly more famous, but it's defined by the extreme lighting, and all the guys are looking in the same direction, rather than at intentional oblique angles, which was very ABBA. If Queen was the intention here, I think they did it wrong.
Bruce Horak (the actor who played Hemmer in S1), plays the part of the lead Klingon in this scene. So glad they brought him in for this episode in some way....
I thoroughly enjoyed this one, not because it was 'deep' or 'carried a message', thought it kinda reminded me of some of the lighter Stargate episodes, and I don't hear people complaining about THOSE. I liked it because it _wasn't_ like modern Trek, it was light, happy, silly and fun, not deep, depressing and grim nostalgic dirge, strange that its taken this long to remember that Star Trek was supposed to be a _positive_ message about humanity.
I love this episode. I think this number in particular is so quintessentially Star Trek. It's campy, but it also expresses sincerely the value of working together for a greater purpose. It feels like it's almost illegal to do something like that non-ironically on TV nowadays.
BEST SNW Episode to date, and I don't even like musicals. Gene Roddenbury would be proud of what his space opera has become in 2023. Spock, Chaple and La'ans solos were tearing me up. You never know what Star Trek will do next 💖💖💖
Almost a year into its existence and this song has not yet once failed to counteract every bad mood I've been in since I first heard it when this episode first aired. I love being a Trekkie!!!
The best part of this song will ALWAYS be Spock suddenly realizing, at the last possible second that his voice was needed as the proverbial "last straw to break the camel's back." And he jumped RIGHT in WITHOUT hesitation! The second best part is the creation of Klingon K-Pop. Die hard Klingon cosplayers, please make this an enduring musical genre. PLEASE!!!And I expect at least half of you Klingon cosplayers to also do this while singing in Klingon. Please, answer the call dedicated Trek singers who also know Klingon. Your fellow Trekkies need you !
I don't care what anybody says one could feel the soul of Gene Roddenberry in this episode all the shenanigans, the Enterprise crew coming together as one in its entirety, the random moment with the Klingons, this felt like an episode Gene would have written even though he didn't and couldn't I am applauding the SNW writing crew for this Episode
The best part was they did the musical stuff in a way that it made sense and worked EXTREMELY well in the context of the story they were trying to tell.
I must admit, when I saw that this episode was a musical I was scared that it might not work, but now it is one of my favorite episodes, along with, “Ad astra per aspera”. The dancing Klingons were a complete shocker. Who knew that those Klingon boys had some smooth moves !! They definitely had my blood screaming !! It wasn’t long that I said to myself, Oh! I am down with that……..now I want a musical !! and I don’t want them to skimp on the dancing Klingon’s like they did in this episode !!
God, this is the most fun. I was a little worried about how a music episode was gonna work, but then I've seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer nail it in the past. This one also nails it. It's such a perfect way to delve into the characters and have them expressing stuff they'd never say otherwise and a great way to just have fun with Trek. Which is honestly the best thing you can do with Trek. Just take it, run with it and have a laugh along the way. Also, the Klingons trying so hard to restrain themselves and then breaking out into a boy band number anyway is hilarious. That moment will live in my head rent free for the rest of my life. I can only imagine Worf talking about it over a century later. "Only under a rare occasion would they speak of that event. The singing was a great shame upon their houses. They spend the remainder of their days striving to regain their lost honor."
Mercer: We had a birthday party on the bridge of the Orville🥳🥳🥳🎉🎉🎉 Pike: We had an epic musical number on the bridge that ended with the Enterprise and three Klingon battle cruisers twirling in unison🎶🎶🎶🎼🎼🎼 Mercer: 😞
This is the episode (even more than 'Those Old Scientists') where the SNW showrunners demonstrated that they 'get it'. Star Trek is never going to be The Expanse or BSG, they contain a level of gravitas that simply is not Star Trek. Taking Roddenberry's love child in that direction takes it away from the pure fun of it's 60's television roots. The reboot movies & the gawdawful Discovery are pew-pew festivals targeting an audience that wasn't alive for TOS, and even the wildly popular DS9, takes itself way too seriously. But SNW strikes a balance that we haven't seen for 60 years. The Gorn are an existential threat, but episodes are interspersed with less dire entries. I was 12 years old when the original series aired, and SNW is the hard hit of nostagia I've been waiting for. I think Gene is looking down, pleased that someone finally understands.
For me the core of Star Trek is the philosophical questions, moral dilemmas, and progressive social commentary. I don't mind it going darker a la Babylon 5 or DS9. The problem I have with the Kelvin timeline, Discovery and Picard is that they don't use intelligent dialogue and arguments to convince us nor leave us interesting question to think about. They just tell us those are bad guys and resolve the conflict by shooting, punching, or decapitating.
I just love this episode the most! The singing, the words and the love of musicals, best Star Trek ever! Alex Kurtzman you finally got it right! Congratulations!!!
So...😂 three things...Klingons singing is better than really any song out today, Sam Kirk grooving along with their melody, and Spocks, "not exactly" comment...this was a SUPER fun episode! 😊
As someone who has always loved both Star Trek and Musicals I absolutely love this . Also it’s fascinating, this is the first time any phenomenon has been attributed to people just singing in stories. One could say all musicals could be the result of this effect and it’s the origin! Intriguing…

It’s a wonderful bit of fun. Discovery is so serious with Burnham emoting every scene, it’s nice to have a bit of old school Trek fun. I love this song and listen to the soundtrack often. Strange New Worlds is 👌🏻 I can’t wait for season 3!
I love musicals. And I love this episode. They all sing beautifully. I don't want the journey to end, and that's what Star Trek does, let's you take a journey across the universe and just sit back and learn right about it along with them.😊
Anyone who disliked (let alone hated) this episode 1) has no soul, 2) don't understand Star Trek, and 3) have opinions not worth listening to in reference to Star Trek. This is not subjective; it is an objective truth.
This show did the impossible with this big "showstopper." They created a song that I legitimately will NEVER get tired of hearing in my head, or with my ears. I seriously want this to be the last song that I hear before I die, and I WILL make sure that it gets played multiple times at my funeral (hopefully in the FAR distant future). No joke there. Just truth. I love Star Trek that much!
At first I did not like this episode when i watched it. I thought it was silly, but I have watched it over and over at least 2 times per day for the last week, to review every part and I have to admit, I LOVE IT!!!!! from the moment spok started singing.
I am not into musicals at all ... not for any reason other than they look silly to me. My brain just can't handle people breaking out into song for some reason. All of us are different of course, and I am well aware that millions of people all over the planet love them. That being said, I loved this episode. It was different. They took some risks that worked. It felt like a Star Trek episode. I was amazed :-). I can't say that I hope they do this again (unless they find a good reason of course), but anyone trashing this episode should take another look at it. It's well written, the songs are great, the choreography isn't overblown, and it has the feel of a TOS episode. Never in a million years did I think I'd actually enjoy something like a musical Star Trek episode, but here we are :-)! The cast and crew of Strange New Worlds have hit about a dozen grand slams since the launch of the series. I've been a fan of Star Trek my entire life. The writers have captured that early Trek feel and then some. Every single main character is excellent ... so excellent that picking a favorite is like picking your favorite son or daughter ... you simply can't do it!! :-) I cannot wait to see what they have in store for us as the years go on :-). Hell, I don't think I can wait until Thursday for the season finale!!!! :-)

I've watched this episode 4 times through now. I absolutely love this, they all performed so well, I hope they win awards with this!
watched it twice, and listened to at least 4 of the songs a LARGER number of times on Spotify
I picked up the sound track and LOVE it.
Me too. I wonder if they realize how beautiful of a job they did!
@@scottreacher4620 Defintiely loved it, but one thing I wished they included was of the sound ships singing along with the crew during 'We Are One'
Worf: "Klingon Starships DO NOT do Water Ballet!" @3:46
@@MastarNinja, Strange New Worlds has been SO good! It has the spirit of TOS, updated for modern sensibilities and with modern production values. It's very nearly perfect.
This one episode could be a play played by theatre groups around the world! The cast writers and sets are superb!
I love the part where is Spock somehow breaks through the quantum field to specifically state he “won’t” miss the singing
"Will this work? Who can say; we're gonna sing it anyway!"
Why humans kickass in sci fi worlds
My 11 year old heard the soundtrack today while she had breakfast. She normally avoids TNG/VOY etc when her dad has it on. Not only did she watch this clip (multiple times) but has been singing it constantly ever since.
She's also said "I now really, really want to watch this episode"
Good job writers
Did she see it? Did she like it? What did she think of all the songs? 🥳
@scottreacher4620 she's only heard the songs and seen the online clips but she's driving her brother nuts singing it (I join in obviously 😁) She totally LOVES the songs, she's virtually word perfect already and she'll get to watch it in a few days when we get back from visiting family.
@@spaceelf6187 I hope she loved it. 🥳
@scottreacher4620 well - she watched it last night with the family. And then I found her watching it again this afternoon 🤣
And doing the dance steps from the finale on the bridge 😁
@@spaceelf6187 Doing the dance steps??? That's awesome!
The ABBA visual gag with the trio in engineering at 2:46 is highly underrated.
Bohemian Rhapsody vibes by Queen too !
@@robwembley yeah I was feeling more Bohemian Rhapsody
@@camilleney7487 Me too babes !
Bohemian Rhapsody is similar and certainly more famous, but it's defined by the extreme lighting, and all the guys are looking in the same direction, rather than at intentional oblique angles, which was very ABBA.
If Queen was the intention here, I think they did it wrong.
@@matthewsmith6057it’s Queen.
Bruce Horak (the actor who played Hemmer in S1), plays the part of the lead Klingon in this scene. So glad they brought him in for this episode in some way....
I hear it now! when he first growls
We've only had 2 seasons of this show but I feel like I've known this crew for much longer. Music is so powerful and inspiring 🥲🎵🎶
This is such a great series. A crew whose names you know and character development with them. And this episode was superb.
My favorite shot of the song is at 3:47 with the Klingon ships spinning around the Enterprise like they're taking part in a Busby Berkley number.
I want a whole klingon album now
The Klingon boy band is lovely
If the war doesn't work for the Klingons. At least they still got some side band job lol
Same
I wonder if this was when they switched to Klingon opera.
You have never truly heard K-pop until you have heard it in it’s original Klingon
It was logical to join the chorus for the sake of the ship.
I really can't believe how much this is making me smile. 😊
I didn't want to love this as much as I do. The Klingons gave me Hamilton vibes, which was very unexpected.
Just found out that the Klingon general is played by Bruce Horak, aka Hemmer.
Watched it seven times on paramount plus. Folks, we need to keep watching it and make it the most watched Trek episode on paramount plus!
Yes! I'm doing that anyway, but now I can feel as if I'm accomplishing something by doing it. :-)
I like how Spock sings I won’t miss singing unlike everyone else 😂
I came into this expecting to hate a musical episode, but... wow. This absolutely blew me away.
Love Sam Kirk getting into the Klingon song at 3:21 adding to the hilarity.
ahaha, I didnt notice that, thanks XD
What's not to like about K-Pop?
@@Zeragamba Exactly! 200 years in the future and it still groves.
Even better is that Bruce Horak aka Hemmer, is the lead Klingon in this scene. So glad they brought him in for this episode...
Lol I same thought here I was like "oh no DISNEY TAKEOVER" but this is way better!
Buffy did it better. There was more song variety and the songs were more integral to the plot.
I didn't realize how much I needed K-Pop Klingons !!!
Me too
Mercer: We had a birthday party on the bridge of the Orville🥳🥳🥳🎉🎉🎉
Pike: We had an epic musical number on the bridge that ended with the Enterprise and three Klingon battle cruisers twirling in unison🎶🎶🎶🎼🎼🎼
Mercer: 😞
I love how they ended with unity as a crew after singing about individual struggles the whole episode. This last number is powerful with positivity.
I love strange new worlds so much for doing this
There were no Red Shirts lost during the making of this number.
I was genuinely expecting that hallway with the dancing redshirts to suddenly decompress.
@@carlzerris6566 think the original series had an average of 1 red shirt die for every 3rd episode.
That’s a relief
This song has been stuck in my head 😂 this episode was a hit!
This has Quickly become one of my all time favourite star trek episodes, love it,🖤
OMG, the explosion at the end. I mean, PERFECTION!!!!
It was kind of sad to see that reality end 😢 when it exploded but it had to be done I know 😅
I need a full version of the Klingon part asap. I'm not sure what it would entail but I NEED IT.
We all needed this so badly! Thank you Strange New Worlds!
You know Nichelle Nichols would have absolutely loved this.
Never thought I would ever say this.... but this episode is on par with "once more, with feeling" for me!
Sorry, these songs blow Buffy out of the water. Just my opinion!
I want more Klingons singing
A different kind of K-Pop
Maybe some kind of short trek. doesn't have to be same song but same style at least.
@@dakariszulu Kling-Pop, if you will.

I can only imagine how much fun this was to film. Those smiles are so genuine
I can't believe how wonderful this whole season has been! I think this is going to become one of the series that gets brought up just like TNG
I was honestly expecting the Klingons to belt out some Metallica. But this was way funnier.
What nobody expects is Vulcans with Metallica. Which is why it's logical to make it so, of course...
Well, they did talk about their "dishonour!" 😂
The only thing I love more than this episode is how much love and appreciation is in the comments
Pike looks so serious at the end. The man is FOCUSED. 🤣
As someone who has always loved both Star Trek and Musicals I absolutely love this . Also it’s fascinating, this is the first time any phenomenon has been attributed to people just singing in stories. One could say all musicals could be the result of this effect and it’s the origin! Intriguing…
I was not prepared for the synchronized flying of the ships.
I'd love to see a Behind the Scenes in the making of this. I bet the cast and crew had so much fun!
@GodmodeWu I listened to all the songs in chronological order! From someone who's watched the episode almost half a dozen times for the songs, thank you for posting all the songs!!! 🖖🏽
The Sonar pinging sound after the Klingon’s K-Pop makes it a perfect “cricket sound” response from the Enterprise crew.
3:45 - 🎵 "To protect the mission. Our prime directiveeeee" 🎵 Also Spock: "mm, not exactly." LOL
At 1:10 as well where he says "I won't miss singing".

I was curious of the number they needed to reach 344 and found this, "The 344 angel number has a special meaning. It carries a lot of positive energy and is considered to be a sign of reassurance. It is a symbol of sociability and good communication. This makes it a great number for those looking to expand their social circles."
The best episode of any Star Trek ever!
Going into this episode, I had been expecting a trainwreck for the past two weeks thinking about how it shouldn't work. I'm happy to have been extremely wrong.
This may seem silly... I grew up with Star Trek The Original Series. The characters gave me such joy and sparked my imagination as I grew up. Now I am old, and the same characters will have new adventures until the day I die. How Blessed I am!
Totally loved this episode. I've watched it at least a dozen times!
It’s a wonderful bit of fun. Discovery is so serious with Burnham emoting every scene, it’s nice to have a bit of old school Trek fun.
I love this song and listen to the soundtrack often.
Strange New Worlds is 👌🏻
I can’t wait for season 3!
4:08 - Spock really said, "I'll dance when the universe is at stake, and NOT BEFORE!" 😆😆😆
I like how during the Klingon bit everyone is just standing there like "OMG this is so awkward" and then there's Sam very very low key vibing to it xD
I really want a full 2 hours of this in a movie xD like damn I loved this sm
"Why are you only calling us when you got your dramas?" 😂😂😂
3:19 how have i not seen this before? Sam ist vibing with the klingons.🤣🤣🤣🤣
Props to the Klingon on the right, who was the one who managed to resist the anomaly the longest.
I think it's hilarious that the probability field was kind enough to furnish M'Benga with some heavy autotune.
He needed the help
He did say at the start he doesn't sing in fairness.
I love musicals. And I love this episode. They all sing beautifully. I don't want the journey to end, and that's what Star Trek does, let's you take a journey across the universe and just sit back and learn right about it along with them.😊
On a certain level, this is the best Star Trek episode ever. 😂
Anyone who disliked (let alone hated) this episode 1) has no soul, 2) don't understand Star Trek, and 3) have opinions not worth listening to in reference to Star Trek. This is not subjective; it is an objective truth.
Beautiful. I thought not that it would be so good. But it is great. 🖖
You're doing gods work, thank you 😭🙏
This show did the impossible with this big "showstopper." They created a song that I legitimately will NEVER get tired of hearing in my head, or with my ears.
I loved this episode so much!
