Ethan Peck is just amazing. He not only did he sing and stay in character, but gave a most heart-retching rendition of the song. A perfect counterpoint to Jess Bush's rendition.
There's two musical episode specials that I love, Buffy's 'Once More, With Feeling' and this one. And, I have that song Spock sung as an earworm. Oh yes, and who can forget about the singing Klingons... LOL
When Uhura uploaded the American Songbook into the subspace rift, the background music played was perfect for each character's vocal range. I loved how the entire episode was choreographed for each character. It has become one of my favorites. I find myself singing the songs as I fall asleep.
I just now got around to watching the Strange New Worlds ep, Subspace Rhapsody for the second time, after watching it the first time when it was first out. I just have to tell somebody, I really loved it! I am a musician, so that might be another reason why for me. But here's the thing, I realize the premise as basically.. ridiculous. It is rather silly. But at the same time, I love the episode and what they did with it! This is a strange feeling, both giving a thumbs up and down at the same time, but mostly up because I just enjoy it so much. The songs are high caliber and really great, inducing a lot of emotion from the listener. They did such great character development in the episode, while singing the songs and otherwise. Very moving. On the ridiculous side, every time a song starts, and the music starts playing, the characters will look up, telling us that they are hearing the music begin also. The subspace fold they are saying causes them all to break into song could not also compose this music, in the way humans recognize good musical melodies and so forth, and produce it for them to sing over like that! Lol. Also, if high emotions is what they determine causes them to break into singing, why did La'an not start singing when she has her very emotional talk with Kirk? But anyways, like I say I really love it and it made me really excited. Strange New Worlds has been knocking it out of the park overall, it's been a great show and I'm very glad for it!
Actually, if you watch closely in the background, La'an gets up from her station at Tactical, walks over to Uhura's console and kills the transmission. First she has to find the correct switch flip though. Priceless acting, and singing, all around.
@@jamesinmontana600 and La'an walks directly across the bridge. Because it's so important to her to stop Pike "revealing too much" she takes the shortcut/direct route. So many little details. I have to give the director many kudos.
I love this episode. I've just finished showing SNW to my parents and they really enjoyed this one. My mum said her heart was broken by Spock and Christine's break-up, and they laughed out loud at 'A Private Conversation' and the Klingon's part of the finale. One of my favourite episodes of the entire franchise!
@darrenbent7601 OK, cool, I'd really like to see the behind the scenes stuff like they did with "Once More With Feeling" especially with the final song, I could be wrong, the cast seemed to be happy and enjoying themselves.
Watch READY ROOM !!! It's very very good and the actors are COMPLETELY candid and open and vulnerable. The joy they feel for this series and the Star Trek franchise is so real and powerful for everyone involved. Ready Room interviews almost every actor, writer, director, stunts, makeup, wardrobe, sets, music, and choreographer ... and they all are so thrilled to be part of this series ! Even Will Wheaton is, I'm going to say it, very good and a much nicer, far less self centered version of himself that somehow manages to be perfect ! He's really humble about his Star Trek cred, but he retains every drop of Super Nerd and is not ashamed of being completely excited by interviewing everyone !

Interesting thing I just realized about the "I'm the X" song. When Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) sings "Keep us Connected" at the beginning you can feel her pain of being alone and wondering if there is anything more for her other than pain, then she finds the pattern and the song shifts from somber to joyous...MOST EXCELLENT!
I think Gene would be proud of Strange New Worlds. It is a wonderful, extremely talent heavy show that adheres to the very best qualities of the original Star Trek.
I've been thinking the same thing lately. he would be amazed by the special effects but would like the creative boundaries of this new show. TOS was trying so hard to be realistic but even that had silliness from time to time.
Completely agree. Really interesting to see how this was done as a story device, and see it play out. Normally I can’t stand musicals but I loved this. Brilliant!
Sometimes, the best thing that can happen is the most unexpected. I've watched Star Trek since I was a kid. Never would have dreamt of an episode that brought such a rush of amusement and delight. Bravo for the risk taking. It was worth every moment. Loved the bar scene "I'm Ready." 🌌
I usually loathe musicals too. Every Gen-X remembers the Ally McBeal Christmas Musical from 2000, right? When I heard ST:SNW S2E9 was going to be a musical, I ignored it for weeks. I finally watched it today and I have to admit, this was one of the best episodes of season 2. Bravo! Job well done!! Come to think of it, if ST:NG did a musical episode, Worf would be kick-ass at bass and baritone, just saying.
I remember the first episode of Star Trek that I ever watched - Clint Howard was the antagonist 😊! I've watched every episode since. This one made my laugh, weep, get a lump in my throat and connect to my friends/family on the USS Enterprise, under the command of Captain Christopher Pike. Thank you. I loved it!
Well, at first moment I found this episode so ridiculous.... but I couldn't stop listening, and damn I love these songs of this strange Star Trek World episode...
Fell asleep and woke up to Celia singing,"Keep us connected", Bravo,Bravo, rewatched entire episode ,so emotional, enjoyed, Writers, keep up the great work! 👏👏❤
I would almost qualify this to be a car ride listening soundtrack, you know, the days of traveling away from home to a vacationary place. ( sigh ) Well i guess it's just a dream.
I think the meta-reason is that Melissa Navia has been dealing with the loss of her partner, Brian Bannon, who died suddenly between S1 and S2. She has talked openly about her grief in an interview in "The Ready Room" (as well as an article she wrote on talkhouse) that she'd go from sobbing her eyes out in her room then pull herself together to shoot a scene. She also praised the cast and crew for looking after her and checking to see if she needed breaks. I speculate the writers did not want to push her further than they did this season.
This is my favorite Star Trek episode of all time! Bravo to the writers and cast for creating this original and delightful musical exploration of the universe. Maybe someday we'll see a Star Trek musical on Broadway!
I was looking forward to what Star Trek would do with a musical episode... And it truly did not disappoint. I enjoyed it immensely and have been listening to the soundtrack over and over again since it aired. I just realized as well that Una had a second verse in the soundtrack version of "Keeping Secrets" that wasn't included in the episode. Everyone was awesome in this episode, but the women totally shone like stars with their numbers. I also love how Captain Pike sings his love for his crew with, "The Starship Enterprise feels electrified, I'm so proud to be your captain!" in the final number. But as a male singer, my personal favorite number is Spock's "I'm The X." I'm a bari-tenor, while Ethan Peck is a baritone, maybe even a bass. I love the challenge of singing this song trying to get to my lower range and darker colors of my voice. Can't wait to do this the next time I'm at a karaoke bar... or maybe a Trek con in Toronto sometime!
What I appreciate the most of this episode is that it still mattered beyond the gimic (much like the Lower Decks ep). It pushed the character arcs forward for practically every member of the crew.
Couldn't agree more. I don't like musicals either and was a little more than skeptical going into it but I loved it. What they're doing with this series is amazing! I grew up with TNG and it was always the one I considered the best but now SNW is my new No. 1.
@@whatname1984 I grew up with TNG too. I saw all the series since TOS until Enterprise. I was disappointed with Discovery. I have to see Lower Decks and Prodigy. What can I say about SNW? Awesome!
@@whatname1984 I am similarly skeptical with shows doing musicals. It always felt contrived and annoying, not a natural thing at all. The only ones I liked prior to this was Buffy's "Once More with Feeling" (Tara can sing!) and Xena's "Bitter Suite". This was better than both by a very large amount. I think it's because the crew recognized that the musical part of it was unusual (even if they were compelled to do it for story reasons) mixed with a very large helping of amazing talent on the behalf of everyone in the episode. I don't think we would have the same chemistry with TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, PIC, Prodigy, or DSC. I'm not sure about Lower Decks, but it might work there. Maybe. But, this crew was the best chemistry and talent to make the musical happen.
Number 3 on the list should be 'Connect with your Crew' between Una and Jim Kirk. Otherwise, this is great sound track. I'd take this on vinyl, CD and DVD as soon as it hit the shelves. Definitely worthy of an Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics and Grammy's for all of them. I stand corrected. It is indeed 'Connect to your truths' to connect to your crew.
I started watching this episode full of dread (I usually don't like musicals). At Spock's first singing sentence I was laughing, at the end of the first song I had laughed so much I was crying, all at the same time. The whole episode was SO FUN. Season 2 really delivered greatness.
I like musicals in and of them selfs. But star trek is star trek and I heard about this episode. I was scared too. Then I saw it and yeah. Great writing and execution.
The talent every player and production person involved in the episode is staggering. How can you not love this show - and kudos tp Paramount for such a ballsy move.
This was the perfect time for them to do a musical, given the number of skilled singers they had access to. Uhura and La'an were both musical theater veterans, and Chapel, Una, Spock, and Kirk were strong enough to carry solos or duets. Pike wasn't quite in their league, but he managed to hold his own as well.
It was good and I enjoyed it, but not sure it was that good yet! Once More With Feeling is THE high bar standard for me. I still love listening to that all these years later.
Jess Bush was incredible in this episode, I wasn’t expecting such rich low tones from her. It’s close between I’m ready, status report and keep us connected for my personal favorites from the episode. Celia Gooding was absolutely astonishing with those high notes.
She showed such joy in her accomplishment! I just wish the writers had addressed the obvious question about why she didn't tell Spock (so many: "I never asked you to change for me," "Boimler made me realize if I was never going to be an important part of your life," "I don't want to interfere with what you're destined to do," "I get the feeling I'm just part of an experiment with emotions you are destined to abandon," etc. Most likely: It will be hard to leave you and I'm putting off telling you until the crisis is over and we can figure things out."). But instead with get nothing but frustration at a relationship the writers built up, but then never really let us see, let alone, enjoy.

Closest we got was that bit in Insurrection with Picard, Worf, and Data doing Gilbert & Sullivan. "Sing, Worf, sing!"
We all need to watch a good musical once in awhile; it always brings a bit of joy. To have one from a beloved franchise was a real treat.
long time trekker. enjoyed this.
I remember the first episode of Star Trek that I ever watched - Clint Howard was the antagonist 😊! I've watched every episode since. This one made my laugh, weep, get a lump in my throat and connect to my friends/family on the USS Enterprise, under the command of Captain Christopher Pike. Thank you. I loved it!
Tranya!
Well, at first moment I found this episode so ridiculous.... but I couldn't stop listening, and damn I love these songs of this strange Star Trek World episode...
Christina Chong is so fvcking talented. La'An's song is a MASTERPIECE
This needs to be made into a full length broadway musical. The Klingon K-pop sequence was way too short.
I second this :-))))))
Was hoping their would have been a full-length version on the soundtrack release 😢
why can't i stop listening to this?
Same
Because it's amazing?
This is story telling at its best. The story keeps evolving and growing.
The music is spot on and superb quality. Hazaa I say HAZAA
"Huzzah!"
Huzzah!
Hip Hop HUZZAH!
I just *had* to listen to it all again. 😍😍😍😍 From one the Greatest Episodes seen on TV since the beginning of this Century.
Fell asleep and woke up to Celia singing,"Keep us connected", Bravo,Bravo, rewatched entire episode ,so emotional, enjoyed,
Writers, keep up the great work! 👏👏❤
I would almost qualify this to be a car ride listening soundtrack, you know, the days of traveling away from home to a vacationary place. ( sigh ) Well i guess it's just a dream.
We've been singing this for days!
I LOVE this episode. This deserves an Emmy.
I cannot get this out of my head! I absolutely love it!
Basically the only criticism I have of this episode is that Ortegas shouldve gotten her own song, girl needs some more character growth
The Harry Kim treatment 😢
The Harry Kim treatment 😢
I think the meta-reason is that Melissa Navia has been dealing with the loss of her partner, Brian Bannon, who died suddenly between S1 and S2. She has talked openly about her grief in an interview in "The Ready Room" (as well as an article she wrote on talkhouse) that she'd go from sobbing her eyes out in her room then pull herself together to shoot a scene. She also praised the cast and crew for looking after her and checking to see if she needed breaks. I speculate the writers did not want to push her further than they did this season.
Tbh Christina Chongs performance was awesome...became one of my favorite songs...the whole episode was so refreshing and pure entertaining
This is my favorite Star Trek episode of all time! Bravo to the writers and cast for creating this original and delightful musical exploration of the universe. Maybe someday we'll see a Star Trek musical on Broadway!
They picked the right actress to play Uhura that's all I will say.
AS good as it gets. Star Trek does Disney. Now... let's see them get a Grammy for it!
I don't like musicals, but this episode had the exact match between story, music, drama and fun. I listen the songs before to sleep with joy.
The best episode, no doubt.
All systems stable, I'm ready, I'm the X and others- OMG! So cool, so energising, so inspiring, so emotional!
I don't know if this is in the works, but I need a star speckled pressing on vinyl please!
It is indeed 'Connect to your truths' to connect to your crew.
one of the most beautiful parts. And the songs are great. 😊
I started watching this episode full of dread (I usually don't like musicals). At Spock's first singing sentence I was laughing, at the end of the first song I had laughed so much I was crying, all at the same time. The whole episode was SO FUN. Season 2 really delivered greatness.
same happend to me !
I agree! And I like musicals! It's both a good musical and good Star Trek!
Me too. I don't like musicals, but this episode had the exact match between story, music, drama and fun.
The part with Captain Pike on his knees 🤣🤣 he was cut off by La'an. He sang it well. They all did.
I like musicals in and of them selfs. But star trek is star trek and I heard about this episode. I was scared too. Then I saw it and yeah. Great writing and execution.
29:26 for those looking for the Klingon Boy band portion.
The talent every player and production person involved in the episode is staggering. How can you not love this show - and kudos tp Paramount for such a ballsy move.
I hope this gets a physical release
This was the perfect time for them to do a musical, given the number of skilled singers they had access to. Uhura and La'an were both musical theater veterans, and Chapel, Una, Spock, and Kirk were strong enough to carry solos or duets. Pike wasn't quite in their league, but he managed to hold his own as well.
Very good episode. Almost as good as of Once More With Feeling. :)
It was good and I enjoyed it, but not sure it was that good yet! Once More With Feeling is THE high bar standard for me. I still love listening to that all these years later.
@@fitchhouse Same here. IT MUST HAVE BEEN BUNNIES!!!!
I can't stop listening to this soundtrack! 😃😃😃
K-Pop Klingons and dancing red shirts. Just genius!!
They should make this intro the new official one.
I would 100% watch a Star Trek Musical full feature film.
Thanks for making this incredible musical fun free to all of us. Thankyouthankyou!!
Apologies; the most confounding thing, I appear to be singing - so unusual, most peculiar...
152nd as a Boomer who grew up watching TOS as new episodes... and I loved Most things Trek...I LOVED this....and im not much into musicals....what made this special was the story / how they Knew they were singing and why....it all made sense.... all the songs were great..my Fave was by no#1 & Lu'An .. about SECRETS..... Amazing!
Original TOS fan also, this was the most fun episode that was ever aired and I’m not so much a music fan. I would like to see this on stage, it’s a keeper musical.
I still desperately want a full Klingon Pop track.
I want Hemmer/Klingon Captain to have a short Treks episode where he can sing. I mean that was hilarious.
Fascinating
Bit of an understatement
Fantastic is the expression 🖖
Usually I hate musicals but this is amazing 😍😍😍
Christina Chong can SING!
