I mean, did they already cast actors who can sing on purpose??? (Except for the doctor. Still, pretty amazing performace for one who doesn't sing!)
This is my favorite Star Trek episode of all time! Bravo to the writers and cast for creating this original and delightful musical exploration of the universe. Maybe someday we'll see a Star Trek musical on Broadway!
What I appreciate the most of this episode is that it still mattered beyond the gimic (much like the Lower Decks ep). It pushed the character arcs forward for practically every member of the crew.
Sometimes, the best thing that can happen is the most unexpected. I've watched Star Trek since I was a kid. Never would have dreamt of an episode that brought such a rush of amusement and delight. Bravo for the risk taking. It was worth every moment. Loved the bar scene "I'm Ready." 🌌
The talent every player and production person involved in the episode is staggering. How can you not love this show - and kudos tp Paramount for such a ballsy move.
This was the perfect time for them to do a musical, given the number of skilled singers they had access to. Uhura and La'an were both musical theater veterans, and Chapel, Una, Spock, and Kirk were strong enough to carry solos or duets. Pike wasn't quite in their league, but he managed to hold his own as well.
I would almost qualify this to be a car ride listening soundtrack, you know, the days of traveling away from home to a vacationary place. ( sigh ) Well i guess it's just a dream.
Number 3 on the list should be 'Connect with your Crew' between Una and Jim Kirk. Otherwise, this is great sound track. I'd take this on vinyl, CD and DVD as soon as it hit the shelves. Definitely worthy of an Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics and Grammy's for all of them. I stand corrected. It is indeed 'Connect to your truths' to connect to your crew.
I usually loathe musicals too. Every Gen-X remembers the Ally McBeal Christmas Musical from 2000, right? When I heard ST:SNW S2E9 was going to be a musical, I ignored it for weeks. I finally watched it today and I have to admit, this was one of the best episodes of season 2. Bravo! Job well done!! Come to think of it, if ST:NG did a musical episode, Worf would be kick-ass at bass and baritone, just saying.
Ethan Peck is just amazing. He not only did he sing and stay in character, but gave a most heart-retching rendition of the song. A perfect counterpoint to Jess Bush's rendition.
Couldn't agree more. I don't like musicals either and was a little more than skeptical going into it but I loved it. What they're doing with this series is amazing! I grew up with TNG and it was always the one I considered the best but now SNW is my new No. 1.
@@whatname1984 I grew up with TNG too. I saw all the series since TOS until Enterprise. I was disappointed with Discovery. I have to see Lower Decks and Prodigy. What can I say about SNW? Awesome!
@@whatname1984 I am similarly skeptical with shows doing musicals. It always felt contrived and annoying, not a natural thing at all. The only ones I liked prior to this was Buffy's "Once More with Feeling" (Tara can sing!) and Xena's "Bitter Suite". This was better than both by a very large amount. I think it's because the crew recognized that the musical part of it was unusual (even if they were compelled to do it for story reasons) mixed with a very large helping of amazing talent on the behalf of everyone in the episode. I don't think we would have the same chemistry with TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, PIC, Prodigy, or DSC. I'm not sure about Lower Decks, but it might work there. Maybe. But, this crew was the best chemistry and talent to make the musical happen.
I just now got around to watching the Strange New Worlds ep, Subspace Rhapsody for the second time, after watching it the first time when it was first out. I just have to tell somebody, I really loved it! I am a musician, so that might be another reason why for me. But here's the thing, I realize the premise as basically.. ridiculous. It is rather silly. But at the same time, I love the episode and what they did with it! This is a strange feeling, both giving a thumbs up and down at the same time, but mostly up because I just enjoy it so much. The songs are high caliber and really great, inducing a lot of emotion from the listener. They did such great character development in the episode, while singing the songs and otherwise. Very moving. On the ridiculous side, every time a song starts, and the music starts playing, the characters will look up, telling us that they are hearing the music begin also. The subspace fold they are saying causes them all to break into song could not also compose this music, in the way humans recognize good musical melodies and so forth, and produce it for them to sing over like that! Lol. Also, if high emotions is what they determine causes them to break into singing, why did La'an not start singing when she has her very emotional talk with Kirk? But anyways, like I say I really love it and it made me really excited. Strange New Worlds has been knocking it out of the park overall, it's been a great show and I'm very glad for it!
I was looking forward to what Star Trek would do with a musical episode... And it truly did not disappoint. I enjoyed it immensely and have been listening to the soundtrack over and over again since it aired. I just realized as well that Una had a second verse in the soundtrack version of "Keeping Secrets" that wasn't included in the episode. Everyone was awesome in this episode, but the women totally shone like stars with their numbers. I also love how Captain Pike sings his love for his crew with, "The Starship Enterprise feels electrified, I'm so proud to be your captain!" in the final number. But as a male singer, my personal favorite number is Spock's "I'm The X." I'm a bari-tenor, while Ethan Peck is a baritone, maybe even a bass. I love the challenge of singing this song trying to get to my lower range and darker colors of my voice. Can't wait to do this the next time I'm at a karaoke bar... or maybe a Trek con in Toronto sometime!
Interesting thing I just realized about the "I'm the X" song. When you're solving for a variable in an equation, you first have to isolate that variable; in other words, you have to get rid of all other variables in the equation. In order for Chapel to find herself, Spock would first need to be removed from the equation.
Actually this episodes is super amazing. I felt like I'm one of the members of star trek as I watched the movie. In musical Uhura's song for me is nice. I'm still waiting for the next season and episodes of this star trek: strange new world and also the star trek discovery. 😢 ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Let me preface my comment with the statement that I never have cared for Musicals. That being said, I absolutely loved this episode for the exact reason that makes me not care for musicals. For once, there was a REASON for the cast to sing. As implausible as it seems, there was a plot twist that forced them to do it against their will, and they included that in the lyrics. Beyond that, the songs were first-rate, well written and well produced. "How Would That Feel" featuring Christina Chong stands out as it exhibits her artistic ability to project emotion and vocal range in song. Kudos to the cast, the writers, both script and song, and the musicians who came together to produce this episode that is a standout in the Star Trek canon.
I love this I woke up this morning and found myself singing bits of the songs. I realised that it was the best thing I've heard in years, a true classic especially as these are actors not singers!!
The one thing I feel is missing from this album is the Enterprise's part in We Are One. In the show version when the ships are "Dancing," for lack of a better word, you can hear her and it reinforced that she was just as important a character as everyone else. Other than that, this is magnificent.
When I read "An accident with an experimental quantum probability field causes everyone on the U.S.S. Enterprise to break uncontrollably into song" I was really skeptical yet here I am, listening to it on a loop.
something about la'an's first song is almost like a disney movie? it reminds me of a tinkerbell song i can not remember, or mulan's reflection. i absolutely love it! with how she was a princess in season 1's fantasy ep? la'an really is a princess
a Genius Subspace Rhapsody Episode thank you This is Star Trek the way I want it to be, I'd love to continue with such extraordinary episodes like this musical one. The series is refreshingly different from its predecessors. It's been a long time since I've been as pleased as I was with this remarkable performance by the excellent Enterprise team.
Very similar to my top three, just swap private conversation with keep us connected. Jess and Celia were absolutely astonishing, Bush’s sultry low tones and Goodings angelic highs notes were perfection. I’m ready was so personal and savagely cold, keep us connected was soulful and heavy with hope and soaring highs. But Status Report was probably the best, the way it introduced the premise of the episode, chefs kiss.
I think an Emmy is an interesting possibility. For grins to show the show to a wider audience, CBS might consider just showing this episode on broadcast free television. Maybe a background show before the background show before the broadcasting the show. Another fun thing to consider is reaction videos involving the cast of Buffy The Vampire Slayer." You can do the same with the cast of "Strange New Worlds" when they watch "Once More With Feeling. "

All systems stable, I'm ready, I'm the X and others- OMG! So cool, so energising, so inspiring, so emotional!
This is my favorite Star Trek episode of all time! Bravo to the writers and cast for creating this original and delightful musical exploration of the universe. Maybe someday we'll see a Star Trek musical on Broadway!
This needs a daytime Emmy for sure.
What I appreciate the most of this episode is that it still mattered beyond the gimic (much like the Lower Decks ep). It pushed the character arcs forward for practically every member of the crew.
This needs to be made into a full length broadway musical. The Klingon K-pop sequence was way too short.
I second this :-))))))
Was hoping their would have been a full-length version on the soundtrack release 😢
I can't stop listening to this soundtrack! 😃😃😃
I just *had* to listen to it all again. 😍😍😍😍 From one the Greatest Episodes seen on TV since the beginning of this Century.
If Celia Gooding doesn't win an Emmy for "Keep Us Connected" someone needs to go fix the timeline.
PREACH IT!❤❤❤
I concur
Send Boimler and Mariner
I'm wondering if it could be submitted for some sort of a Grammy.....
No way it is definitely not best song there. And that is the best part that soo many of songs end up on people best choice.
one of the most beautiful parts. And the songs are great. 😊
Thank you this is awesome ! What a great episode and soundtrack ! I’d love some physical media vinyl releases for Strange New Worlds.
'Strange New Worlds' is 'Fringe' in space!! I love it!!
Closest we got was that bit in Insurrection with Picard, Worf, and Data doing Gilbert & Sullivan. "Sing, Worf, sing!"
Ethan Peck is just amazing. He not only did he sing and stay in character, but gave a most heart-retching rendition of the song. A perfect counterpoint to Jess Bush's rendition.
I don't like musicals, but this episode had the exact match between story, music, drama and fun. I listen the songs before to sleep with joy.
The best Episode I have ever seen. The Music is just perfect. Emmy awards definitely!
Thanks for making this incredible musical fun free to all of us. Thankyouthankyou!!
This Episode was the best and most surprising I have seen in a while..Smiling from beginning til end ( I am a Musical Fan)
I hope this gets a physical release
I was so giggley 😮😂with surprise at the dancing Kling-free-rappahz!!!
This episode was so much fun
Interesting thing I just realized about the "I'm the X" song.
When you're solving for a variable in an equation, you first have to isolate that variable; in other words, you have to get rid of all other variables in the equation.
In order for Chapel to find herself, Spock would first need to be removed from the equation.
💔
Usually I hate musicals but this is amazing 😍😍😍
Still one of my favourite Star Trek : Strange New Worlds episodes. Grown up with Musicals, and Star Trek ... both together was brilliant.
I first thought a musical oh no but it was the funniest episode in trek
Actually this episodes is super amazing. I felt like I'm one of the members of star trek as I watched the movie. In musical Uhura's song for me is nice.
I'm still waiting for the next season and episodes of this star trek: strange new world and also the star trek discovery. 😢
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
29:26 for those looking for the Klingon Boy band portion.
AS good as it gets. Star Trek does Disney. Now... let's see them get a Grammy for it!
After many hours of listening I fell in love with ethan peck's voice.
Best episode ever.
K-Pop Klingons and dancing red shirts. Just genius!!
Surprisingly great episode. If only the song writers writers could have woven the TOS theme .... with the little-known lyrics...into the finale
Best frikin Star Trek episode ever!!!!!!
The brass section is wonderful.especially the trumpets. The orchestration is awesome.
The one thing I feel is missing from this album is the Enterprise's part in We Are One. In the show version when the ships are "Dancing," for lack of a better word, you can hear her and it reinforced that she was just as important a character as everyone else. Other than that, this is magnificent.
They did a great job. I loved it
It's probably because of my ADHD, but I'm OBSESSED. Thank you for uploading all the songs and well differentiated ones, THANK YOU!
You are not alone. Not ADHD, here, but an old lady who is completely obsessed with this “album”. I think it touched me to the core of my humanity.
When I read "An accident with an experimental quantum probability field causes everyone on the U.S.S. Enterprise to break uncontrollably into song" I was really skeptical yet here I am, listening to it on a loop.
They should make this intro the new official one.
something about la'an's first song is almost like a disney movie? it reminds me of a tinkerbell song i can not remember, or mulan's reflection. i absolutely love it! with how she was a princess in season 1's fantasy ep? la'an really is a princess
I think it's an "I want" song... All musical Disney princesses get one.
This has to be one of the best episodes I really loved it
a Genius Subspace Rhapsody Episode thank you This is Star Trek the way I want it to be, I'd love to continue with such extraordinary episodes like this musical one. The series is refreshingly different from its predecessors. It's been a long time since I've been as pleased as I was with this remarkable performance by the excellent Enterprise team.
My favorite was there Nurse Chapel song. The music, the choreography, the acting and emoting. It was great.
Status Report, Private Conversation and I'm ready are top3 of this _brilliant_ episode for me
Very similar to my top three, just swap private conversation with keep us connected.
@@cainescouten-chappell362I liked Private Conversation as part of the episode, with all the emotions entangled
Christina Chong can SING!
Best Star Trek songs since "Star Trekkin" by The Firm.
Keep us Connected gave me An Huge Ayreon vibe! Great Song!
If Star Trek ever hits Broadway, this should be the episode to adapt.
I don't know if this is in the works, but I need a star speckled pressing on vinyl please!
