    Something most people don’t understand is the need to regularly “exercise” all the shut off valves in the building. Open and close them several times once a year to ensure they don’t seize up. I took over management of a large building where the valves hadn’t been touched for years. When there was a need to shut off a line, it was always a major problem to get the valve to seal, or even turn!

  • @ryanrents126
    @ryanrents126 Год назад +8

    Full time landlord / property manager here. Great list. Let me add 2 more fairly cheap items that solve a ton of problems. If you have city / county water, you'll have a meter in your yard somewhere. Go find it now, mark it if you think it might get covered by leaves, grass, etc. GET A WATER METER KEY. They're a T shaped metal handle with a channel on the bottom that you can use to reach down into a meter box to turn off the valve to your house. If all else fails, kill the leak at the street. Pliers may work too but often the meter is deep in the ground or too hard to turn off without a key.
    Second, this isn't really for emergencies but for just a couple bucks, get one. A drain clog remover snake. Google it. Long flexible plastic with little barbs. Great for nuisance clogs, particularly slow draining bathtubs. Pulls hair out of the drain in seconds.
    No reason for a homeowner to not know how to fix basic issues!

    • @SparxI0
      @SparxI0 Год назад +1

      One caveat with the water meter keys: since that water valve is rarely used, it may be seized same as your main water shutoff in the house. If you call the city/county to come shut off your water and they break the valve, the $10,000+ repair is on them. If you're the one that breaks it... Well that won't be a good day..

      If you have copper pipe, and there's soooo many variables in a 75 year old house. The best thing to do is have a reputable plumber inspect your plumbing and MAIN water shut off valve. If it's not easily accessible, they can plumb it so that it is! Quick access to your main shut off is worth WAY more than those items.

    Anyone looking for a cheap headlamp should check Amazon or Harbor Freight. I found several starting as low as $2.50 up to about $7.00. The flashlight doesn’t need to be top quality for something like this. It only has to last about 30 minutes, and is likely to get banged around during the work so why spend more? Just keep the batteries OUT of them until needed. I’d store the batteries in the same box with the flashlight and plumbing supplies but in a ziploc bag so they don’t ruin the flashlight in case they leak.
    There are also loads of other good options for cheap if just a general area light is needed. Often a cell phone simply propped up against something can serve just as well, and we know we’re gonna need the phone close by to reference Got2Learn videos while we do the work anyway.

      I agree that Got2Learn produces crisp, pedagogically perfect videos.
      I'll take this opportunity to recommend that the first thing a new home/apartment owner should do is (1) locate both gas and water shutoffs, (2) get whatever tools are necessary for a shutoff operation, (3) do shutoff testing, and (4) get a professional to fix any problems with these operations. Teach other adults in the home how to perform shutoffs.

    I had a couple of busted water pipes from the Christmas storm and had a similar kit. Two items that are useful to add are sharkbite end caps and elbows.
    With the endcaps, you could probably make a cheaper emergency repair kit just to be able to turn on the water again.
    The elbow is useful in case it is the elbow that breaks, which is what happened to me.

    Also remember that if you have a sump pump you need an emergency kit for that as well. They never seem to fail when stores are open. My kit includes a spare pump, 1 1/4 discharge tubing, clamps couplings and an adapter to the pump outlet. Add a check valve if you use one.

    I wondered about a situation I had to deal with for a client. He has an old house (in the Netherlands, so I'll use metric scale, because I do not know the imperial equivalent).
    He has old copper piping (no lead mind you, so not ancient) of an old standard we used to have. 11 mm for the warm pipes and 14 for the cold ones. New standard pipes are 12 and 15, but if you are making a shower you normally use 15 (cold) and 15 (warm water)mm.
    So I had to solder a cap to make the 11mm pipe 12 mm, then a thing to make 12 ->15mm and then another pipe to go in the faucet. After a few tries I found out that, like you say in your video, it is best to do the entire welding together. But I wondered how you would do this kind of stuff in general and if, like in my case, you can't really see when there is enough solder in the weld.
    I know now to bend the thing so I know more or less how mutch to put in, but still.
    Is this a thing in the usa? New standards and therefore putting tiny caps on the end of your piping and then another sleeve over that?
    Sorry if my English is a bit weird to read, like I said I'm not from an English speaking country.
    Thanks for the video's btw, I know a lot more about why I screwed things up. Good to know for a new task!

    Every home owner must know the location of their water main shut-off valve, in case of emergencies. As a plumber that’s the first thing I look for when I enter any house for any plumbing repair. It’s your insurance policy, in case something goes terribly wrong. The area around it must always be cleared for quick access, and it should be turned off and tested about once a year, just to make sure it actually works.
    There’s nothing worse than needing to shut the main vale off in an emergency only to find the handle stuck open, fused open from years of non-use.

    Push to connect couplings don't have to be tempoary. You just have to prep the pipes. That can be done with water running. Not fun but can be done. I had to stop the water on a service line and used a brass compression fitting. That was a job because the pipe was out of round. What seemed like an hour I spent trying to get the fitting on and the brass washer. Standing round was the Water Inspector, Building Inspector, Fire Department (4 guys) and one Cop. None of them helped. Just this little old, fat lady of 75 years old! A "do it yourself" all around lady!. Anyway. I do have a question. I must repair this plumbing and have have chosen a underground union, because it is in the wall of the basement. I plan to brick up the back of the outside wall, which is in the "dirt", support the sides with brick and then mud up the whole thing, I am wondering how this will hold up in terms of code? Any input?

    From a plumber, all sharkbite fittings will fail may be tomorrow may be 15 years it is inevitable. Don't think that yours is the lucky 1 out of 100s of thousands that will just be a trooper.

      @@Got2Learn You're the best plumbing channel. I've watched tons of plumbing on RUclips. No one is as detailed as you.
