    Great idea I'll have to try this out! I believe those getting into worm composting should try low cost solutions first to test it out. Can always buy an expensive system later if you keep up with it!

      Hi! Exactly! Start on the low cost end of things and add onto it as it makes sense.
      I hope you give it a try and report back! Thanks for watching ❤️

    I honestly love this vid lol, I had pitched the supplied needed for a very similar setup. Keep up the good work, I watch your vids while I’m doing worm stuff lol.

    Yaa, glad I found the original video of the 5-gallon worm bag system (was commenting at the hatching video). Really nice and budget-friendly tip for beginner worm farmers. Easy and nice tips like these really make a lot of difference for newbie worm farmers like me. Thank you so much. I will probably try it with my African Night Crawlers with some twists. For some reason I ordered 5 pounds of them. They are all in a 100L tote now. Oh, boy, they love to escape 😂 -- I really don't want to get a bag system e.g. Urban Worm Bag for this yet because my space is really limited and they are not enough for those 5 pounds anyway. So far I put them in a huge mesh laundry bag in that tote but really woud like to under-crowd them I bit. With normal bins and tote system it would neee more mesh and bungee cords.. so 5-gallon buckets seem a really good idea. I would probably drill holes all over and cover the top with the lid + mesh + bungee cords and see what's going on. Thanks Jayne again for the simple yet great tip! Another idea for us to brainstorm -- I think the entire shopping bag would be a great fit to sell the entire colony for beginers as the ecosystem is established and people just need to plug them in another 5-gallon bucket. ❤

      @@Soil4Soul Hey Cassie! Sorry for the delay in responding 😊. The bag in a bucket is a cheap and easy AND effective way to get started with composting worms. If it doesn’t work out it didn’t cost too much to try. And you’re right, it’s a good way to sell grab and go starter kits to beginners, especially at farmer markets or craft fairs. That’s not my market preference but I can see someone doing well at that! Maybe you?!
      African nightcrawlers. ANCs. They are their own thing. I’m not the expert at all but…. I’ve read quite a few times that they don’t do well in their own castings and need frequent fresh bedding changes. That helps them stay put. Ann @plantobsessed went to a UWB type bag to keep her ANCs from escaping all over the place. Even with the zipper they still manage to get out. I don’t know if the bag in a bucket system would be enough to keep them home! 😳🤞.

      @@RockinWorms I emailed the seller here in 🇨🇦 and he mentioned bedding as well. He said that ANCs do that to everyone, even for him (though ANCs of Vee from Garden and Worm Lady seem happy). It's great that you mentioned they don't do well in their own castings. That's new information to me. Ah, it's a dilemma for me now. It's hard to change the bedding in that huge 102L tote and zipper, yet I really don't want to risk seeing more worm jerkies on my floor if I change them to other bins. 😂 Hahaha. I will let my intuition decide.

    • @RockinWorms
      @RockinWorms  2 месяца назад +1

      @@Soil4Soul Yes I can see the dilemma. And I think the ANCs don’t like to be disturbed much either 🙄. The larger volume of space you have them in will allow them to be in there longer. Can you simply add new bedding to the top a few times to stretch out the time between total refreshes?
      Oh! I just remembered that Ann on the worm chat also has some ANCs. You could ask her some questions if you’re on next week! 👍🪱

    Hi Jayne, The Brain!!! Great idea!
    Patrick @Vermiculture-Learn by Doing (Tampa) has a grow bag for his worms that he keeps outside. Actually, he has a growbag inside another, same size, so water permeable. I love seeing the Publix bag👍Great recycle idea when the plastic disintegrates.
    Watched to the end and well done👍

      Hi Peggy! 😆 Thanks! I actually came up with the idea of using the shopping bags as worm bags because I’d already been using them as self watering grow bags for some of my plants! So I knew they were water and air permeable. It was easy to see how the bags could be used as a mini worm bag at a fraction of the cost of the commercially available worm bags.
      I’ve comment exchanged with Patrick about his outdoor set up. My main concern is worm predators eating thru a bag. He said he’s had a few issues along those lines - I still need to watch those specific videos he pointed me to on that. At the same time I’m already exploring a different outdoor worm bin idea. Usually my 10th idea is the keeper 🤣.
      Thanks for watching!!

    How clever! Love your ingenuity and creative problem-solving skills you implement with the worms. Reminds me of a product Vermibag used to make called the Vermibag Bucket, I believe.

      @@RockinWorms Imitate a CFT bag bottom and practices on that shopping bag if it can be done. Have a hole in the bucket big to get your hand in the bottom from the side to harvest . I got to try that.

    I wonder the size of the bag. 10 gallons? Does it go down to the bottom of the bucket?
    I love my bag system, and so do my worms, but I like the structure that the bucket gives the bag.

    • @RockinWorms
      @RockinWorms  Год назад

      Hi Patty! The bag is around 5 gallons. It fits fully into the 5 gallon bucket and takes up all the room with just a little extra space around it - which is perfect as it helps allow the air to circulate. So yes, if it’s not clipped at some chosen shorter level, the bag goes all the way down to the bottom and ends at the top lip. I say it holds 4 gallons or so of bedding cause you need working room :)
      Thanks for watching and asking questions. It helps everyone!
