@@caeri37 Oh no Anna! It sounds like it started to heat up inside the bucket 😩. Was this the first time you used worm chow and/or mixed into the entire bucket contents? There’s a few things that could have made this happen. Adding too much in relation to the amount of bedding material comes to mind. I also wonder if the reduced surface air exchange was a factor. Also what was your ambient temperature of the compost/soil? Some worm wranglers have indeed reported that mixing worm chow throughout their bedding does not work for their worms. Heating up occurs or even protein poisoning 😳. It’s frustratingly hard to pinpoint the cause of issues sometimes 😡. I am sorry this happened! I just wanted to say I have been developing castings from worms but using the worm factory 360 for a few yrs. But recently I had lost most of my worms and still dont know why. I had been feeding them a worm chow very similar to the one you show on one of your vids. At first I was thinking maybe it was the dry feed that caused the problem but after seeing your vid apparently its not. Anyway I wanted to perchance upgrade to a slightly larger faster system. I have started one of your pre-composting bins the exact same way as you show. I already had a long temp probe from my outdoors composting piles so will use it.. Doing it this way Im not real sure I will know when my precompost will be ready for the worms.

Heating up or even protein poisoning 😳😩. With the many factors that each play a small or large part, it’s hard to figure out exactly what went wrong. It’s always best to go slow when trying new things and ramp up over time. When an issue pops up where there hasn’t been one before it’s a little easier to identify the culprit. 😊 I’ve been doing my bins the way you see for a long time. I’ve focused in on what works for me, my worms and the bin size and contents. You’re going to have to take it slow and find the tweaks that work for your situation. So I decided to do a pre compost experiment. I had a bucket that I had set up to precompost with shreds and vegie scraps. Little did I realize, but the black soldier flies laid eggs in there. When I saw the larvae I was upset, but in doing research, I found out they are a great thing! They also ate up all the food! (but not the cardboard). So I spent a day picking out all the larvae, fed them to the chickens, and ended up with a bucket of pretty soppy larvae mess. Then I had an idea! I got a bin, and mixed the soppy mess with cardboard shreds, probably 40/60, covered it and will wait and see if it heats up. Since theres no food in there, it shouldnt attract the black soldier flies. So if it heats up, I would think it would make some great worm pre compost. Ill let you know if it heats up.

@@katetrueblood1606 Hi Kate! I don’t know that I can give you that 😩. I didn’t make it in the bucket - I scooped it out of the big batch I had just made, before it started heating up. From that perspective the ratio would still be about 55:45 carbon to nitrogen with liquid and the inoculant, the inoculation coming from the old pre-compost mixed in. The heat cycle only lasted a few days. I don’t recall how much the carbon and nitrogen broke down but it probably wasn’t that much. As I said in this video heating did happen but I think it would be a fussy process to replicate on this small scale. To be brutally clear, pre-composting on this small level isn’t something I have the capacity to explore right now. And I’m not sure how worthwhile the effort would be for anyone else either when a regular tote of 18-20 gallons works great and can handle the bedding needs of both the single bin worm wrangler or the one with several bins. 😊🪱

Fast forward to last month when I got a whole huge trough full of ripe watermelons from a neighbor. Since I had to feed them slowly to the chickens and cows the waiting melons got old and yucky and…. I found a colony of BSFL in the trough. Long story short I tried to start a small farm of them but placed the bucket with the chickens and they ate it all! Now I’m researching and getting ready to try again. I do have a I let and a bin set up outside to hopefully attract some of the wild ones while I figure out a better closed loop system. My biggest problem right now is where to set up the love cage. It needs plenty of light, not baking hot and out of the weather. I can get 2 out of 3 six different ways but not all 3 yet 😡. I’m only interested in doing it for my personal homesteading needs 😊. Send me another email with BSFL in the subject and we can brainstorm together! As for the pineapple, yes! Try it! Not every one will take but many many do. It does take a long time for the fruit to grow but so fun and so worth it! 🤩

For me if I’m making purée it’s to make dehydrated veggie powder - otherwise it’s not worth the extra work for me. The worms are happy to eat the food scraps chunky style just fine so why purée it? If it’s for storage space issues then of course do it! But again I move on to drying it so it’s out of both the freezer and the fridge 👍. @@cherylhowker1792 I’m sorry you had that bad experience 😩. It works for me so I keep doing it 😝. Yours works better feeding on top 👍. As long as you keep the disturbance to a minimum, that’s a key thing 😊🪱

Is there a time frame as to how much time goes by before it loses its "health"? Also, can I start a new worm bin with the finished pre-compost? Thank you!

@@kellypotter59 Hi Kelly! Welcome! Pre-compost lasts quite a long time as long as it’s barely moist and has some minimal air. You’re basically keeping the biota alive. 👍 You can absolutely start a new bin - or refresh an old bin - with pre-compost! The worms looove pre-co post as it’s full of all sorts of yummy foods for them. Just be sure the pre-compost has cooled down below 90F before adding worms. Ok? 🤩🪱

Hi Jayne. Interesting. Do you find much difference between oyster shell grit and egg shell grit ? Thank you.

@@timmcilraith8762 Hi Tim! I don’t track one type of grit vs another so I can’t really say if there’s a difference in worm preference. That would be a fun experiment! Would you like to see that? I don’t think there’s a way I could determine if one grit vs another is more effective for the worms though. Just saying. 😊💕🪱

Thanks fot your reply Jayne. I guess you use oyster grit because you don't eat enough eggs for your many worms, but I have have found egg shell grit disappears quicker. Whether it's becaus eeggshell grit is less dense than seashell grit and is disovoled more quickly by soil acidity, or that microbes or the worms prefer it, I don't know. Maybe seashells have some salt in it. I expect a full sized experiment from you in the next few weeks with soil lab analysis and worm biopsy results. I love your videos. Regards, Tim. ps. The easiest way to remove egg shells is to put the boiled egg in a glass jar and shake it. 🙋

@@timmcilraith8762 I’m totally willing to take your observations regarding eggshells vs oyster shells 😊. Even without the testing and biopsy 😝. I have chickens and feed the shells back to them for their calcium needs. Also my neighbor buys most of my eggs and I don’t get the shells back 😎. I do go thru a lot of grit though. 😳 Nice tip on the boiled eggs! I steam mine and the shells come off pretty easily that way too ❤️

Most people can only take small nibbles of fruitcake too! Re: your one cycle breeder bin, maybe they breed less because there's less stress when there's chunky bits to crawl around too. Worms are amazing! ~ Sandra

@@NanasWorms I’m confident the nibbles will get the job done 😳🤩. I need to keep an eye out to make sure trouble doesn’t develop if the fruit cake takes a long time to be eaten. 👍. @@NanasWorms Oh! Hmm. Maybe 🤷‍♂️. I don’t have any idea on how worms perceive their space and determine if it’s big enough to crank out a bunch more cocoons or not. I can understand more easily how they perceive food availability, moisture, and other worms 😊. Have you seen any research on the self regulating mechanisms that worms use? Your research is so much more extensive than mine 🤩🪱

So far, I've only covered research that shows how to promote reproduction. Carbon dense bins promote reproduction; food scrap dense bins produce bigger worms! ~ Sandra
