    • @RockinWorms
      @RockinWorms  Месяц назад +2

      @@johnwood1099 Hi John! I will put food scraps into my worm bins in a variety of different conditions. Frozen, raw, cooked, puréed, etc. The more the cell walls are broken down prior to adding the food into the worm bin, the quicker the worms and biota will be able to digest it. The faster they eat it, the faster they make castings! A long term food that is processed in some form or another before being fed to worms will become moderately faster food simply because the cell walls have been broken. 😎.
      There can be nutritional differences in the food prepped one way vs another but probably not enough to negatively affect the worms 💕.
      Do note that I cook (using my instant pot) almost all of my food scraps in order to eliminate insects and their eggs getting into my bins. Double prizes of eliminating mites and pit worms plus making food easier for my worm to eat 👍🤩🪱

      @@johnwood1099 Ots personal preference, how quickly you want the pre-compost to use, how ‘fine’ you want it to be, etc. If I’m going for finer pre-compost - great for breeder bins in particular - I wait until it cools down to the 105F range. Then I mix thoroughly and pump it back into a heat cycle again.
      Remember that you can always take some pre-compost out of the tote and put it into a smaller container (the more spread out the better) to cool it down faster for quicker use of your pushed and need some asap 👍🤩🪱

      @@cherylhowker1792 Absolutely! They are excellent longer term foods for the worms. Long term food simply means it takes longer to breakdown, by biota working on it, or takes longer to ‘fall apart’ into small pieces that the worms can get into their mouths. Foods high in water content (lettuce, melons, etc) are fast foods, as a comparison. Frozen food scraps will also be faster than non frozen foods as the freezing process breaks cell walls, hastening breakdown. Ok? 🪱

    Would leaves be a good substitute for shredded cardboard? I have piles of shredded leaves, but it is difficult and time consuming for me to acquire and shred cardboard. I realize worms love eating cardboard, so any downsides to using leaves would be appreciated. thanks.

      @RockinWorms  Месяц назад

      @@jeffmeyers3837 Hi Jeff! How have you been? 😊. I’m still loving your ‘the more you worm, the more you learn’ saying 😍
      Leaves are a great resource. You can add leaves right into your bin* (a warning given below!) if you want to skip the pre-composting part 😎. If the leaves are dry and crinkly then they’ll act as a carbon on your mix. If they are green and bendy then they count as nitrogen like the coffee grounds. I have not used leaves (or grass) in making my own pre-compost so can’t comment from personal experience. BUT several commenters have said they’ve used leaves and it’s worked fine! If you’re using a mix of leaf types you won’t get the same uniform result within the same time frame as you would using shredded cardboard. That’s not a bad thing at all - just something to be aware of.
      Now for the warning - jumping worms are showing up in more and more states. They are not worms you want! 😡. Anything that touches the ground - like fallen leaves - could be a habitat for the jumping worms 😳. You can google to see if jumping worms have been reported in your area. If they have, you can take steps to still use leaves safely but raking them up or storing leaves on the ground prior to using directly into a worm bin may not be the best idea any longer 😩. You can run the leaves thru the pre-compost heat cycle and kill the worms and their eggs
      IF your pre-compost gets hot enough.
      If you choose to use leaves as a pre-compost ingredient I hope you’ll post back on your results and thoughts! 😎👍🪱

    I just wanted to say I have been developing castings from worms but using the worm factory 360 for a few yrs. But recently I had lost most of my worms and still dont know why. I had been feeding them a worm chow very similar to the one you show on one of your vids. At first I was thinking maybe it was the dry feed that caused the problem but after seeing your vid apparently its not. Anyway I wanted to perchance upgrade to a slightly larger faster system. I have started one of your pre-composting bins the exact same way as you show. I already had a long temp probe from my outdoors composting piles so will use it.. Doing it this way Im not real sure I will know when my precompost will be ready for the worms.

      @@yes350yes Hi! Welcome! It’s an unfortunate fact that many times we simply don’t know what went wrong. Some worm wranglers have reported that worm chow usage can cause issues in their bins. Heating up or even protein poisoning 😳😩. With the many factors that each play a small or large part, it’s hard to figure out exactly what went wrong. It’s always best to go slow when trying new things and ramp up over time. When an issue pops up where there hasn’t been one before it’s a little easier to identify the culprit. 😊
      I’ve been doing my bins the way you see for a long time. I’ve focused in on what works for me, my worms and the bin size and contents. You’re going to have to take it slow and find the tweaks that work for your situation. I wish it was a one size fits all situations but it’s simply not that. 😊
      As for when the pre-compost is ready to use I have a new video going up Tuesday that may help you! In the meantime get your pre-compost mix made and let it heat up. You’ll be ready for next steps, or close, when the next video drops 😍😎🪱

    In the process of removing the burrito and stiring up the precompost noticing some tiny white worms burrowing into the compost, is this normal or a concern?

    • @RockinWorms
      @RockinWorms  Месяц назад

      @@yes350yes Normal. You’ve probably got some pot worms. Not a problem at all unless there’s tons of them. Pot worms show up in worm bins all the time. If they bug you and you don’t want them you can always run another heat cycle - that’ll reduce their numbers by alot. Frankly I wouldn’t bother doing that and I’d just deal with them once in a worm bin and see how many there really are.
      Cool compost is a fantastic substrate for every bug out there. The burrito top keeps most away but not every one. I’ve had to chase some bugs away too 🙄😡.

    So I decided to do a pre compost experiment. I had a bucket that I had set up to precompost with shreds and vegie scraps. Little did I realize, but the black soldier flies laid eggs in there. When I saw the larvae I was upset, but in doing research, I found out they are a great thing! They also ate up all the food! (but not the cardboard). So I spent a day picking out all the larvae, fed them to the chickens, and ended up with a bucket of pretty soppy larvae mess. Then I had an idea! I got a bin, and mixed the soppy mess with cardboard shreds, probably 40/60, covered it and will wait and see if it heats up. Since theres no food in there, it shouldnt attract the black soldier flies. So if it heats up, I would think it would make some great worm pre compost. Ill let you know if it heats up.
