Captain Matt is the purest person in the world!! I’m starting a worm compost system next week and I’ve been absorbing all this channel has to offer! Thank you for the help 😊😊
I absolutely love these videos. Doesn't take any level of genius to see that you are probably a really good person. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us who didn't have a Captain Matt in our family. Your family should be proud, the substance in your videos is off the charts. Thanks a million.
His heart felt goodness is bringing smile to me
Thank you for sharing this wonderful information - I’m following along and learning a LOT! We are in the process of building our worm box according to your instructions, and are eager to get started making our castings. We have a small sheep farm, and a campground, and are always looking for new ways to improve our walk with the land. Thank you, Captain, for sharing your knowledge, and for being such an excellent and engaging teacher!
Thanks for sharing your story! Great to hear. You’re welcome!
Captain Matt, I think you have the BEST job / business on Earth!! I wish you the best and endless blessings!
Hey Captain, you are a blessing, to not only your Family , but the world. Thank you I just kinda stumbled on to your channel. I'm in the construction biussness. And in doing that I have found myself in the a whole bunch. Mr Father pasted in 2019, found memories of fishing and baiting that hook. The best part was walking into the bait store and going over the fridge and getting that little coverd cubs of worms, and the the candy ile, and the soda ile. I would like to start a little something as I am the just 60 . Thank you for your willingness to share your blessings of wisdom to the world. God blessing to you Sir and your Family.
Thanks for sharing. Those are the memories that matter - what a blessing that we can help create more of the same for younger folks.
Thanks, Captain Matt!!
I very much appreciate your enthusiasm, knowledge, and willingness to share your experience & processes, step by step, with us!
You’re welcome, Kevin!
Thank you Sir, So much for your time and giving back to the trade. I have a question. What is the best way to keep castings fresh?
I am from Ghana ,I having a cat fish . You have educated me alot God bless you all Amen
Hello Aa Frimpong - glad to help!

Thank you for this video. I want to increase my worms but I don't really understand the timing so this was very helpful. Your the best Grandpa, love your supportive family.
Thank you for the great video as usual. Do you count or have idea of increase in the worm population from the 250 worms you put in the breeder bucket?
Captain thank you for sharing. Blessings to you your family!
Nice Honda, I use to have a Civic Coupe just like that one. You sir have good taste. Love your videos. Really makes me want to start a little little worm bin in my apartment
Matt, thanks for the great content, I have bought your products and their top-of-the-line. Keep up the good work!
What a beautiful view from the front of your house!
Thanks, outdoorguy90 ... good old Hudson River in upstate NY. Sometimes I just stop and take it in for a while.
Thank you very much .
Thank you captain Matt!
Cant tell you how much i enjoyed this video. Thank you.
Great to hear, Samuel! You’re welcome!
My apologies Captain sometimes my thoughts are faster than my fingers. I have come across so many times of worms ,small and large after I uncover them, jump like crazy fish out of water. I have never witnessed anything like that. Yes the perfect ground was old history district in Texas. Looking forward to more of your wisdom.
You have a lovely family and I love your videos! Thanks for sharing. I’m new to vermicomposting and I was wondering what exactly, in your opinion, is the best bedding to use for a vermihut stackable composter? Thanks!
Again thank you for your knowledge I'm really going to try and use the knowledge you shared to help my families little ranch down in Texas. Wish me luck and god bless.
You’re welcome, Troy! I look forward to hearing of your success!
Thanks for sharing
Thanks!!
Great content, got to do something with the dog while recording!
You are a great teacher sir. I am a worm farmer in Kenya and I can confess you have educated me new tricks I never knew before on the two-week cocoon cycle. However I wonder if you feed the 250 worms for that period or starve them?
By your great inspirational clips I have subscribed to support you sir.
He top feeds them during the 2 weeks. Best of luck!
I am like you, in that I think buckets are easier to manage than trays. Trays are also expensive, while buckets are free.
Exactly, Sam!
Thank You ! Been wanting to start a worm farm and the information has been very helpful and encouraging. Looking forward to worming my way into the business.
You’re welcome! You can do it!
Do you add the cocoons to the CFT system after sifting them out? If not, what do you do with them?
Captain Matt putts the cocoons and undigested bedding into his big CFT's.
In the CFT's the cocoons hatch and grow into bigger worms making castings as they do it.
It is possible to put the cocoons into more buckets or a nursery to hatch and then as long as he harvests castings and separates the worms before new cocoons hatch, well then, he would have sized worms with a known age (there are worm wranglers that know the age of 99% of their worms). With this method of growing worms, it is very easy to outgrow the space used to grow the worms in. So, when these advanced methods are used space management is the most important thing to master. Growing worms in buckets allows a worm wrangler to have predictable outcomes that are very accurate when it comes to casting and worm production. Captain Matt does it more for the casting production hence the big CFT's. Either way it's all good.
Have a great Day!
@@ไส้เดือนเพื่อชีวิต What's CFT?
@@tomfilbey Continuous Flow Through (worm bin) a very good example is the big red worm bins Captain Matt has.
Only found this today and man it’s amazing thanks
Tomorrow I start a breeder bucket. But think as I already have a smaller bucket… I will use only 100 worms to start it, less if I can’t find 100 in the bin that are breakers. And we will go from there. It’s more the caccons I’m after as want to build my numbers up.
Thanks for this

The secret for getting around the Top feeding and to do the set and forget for 14-21 days is to mix in the worm chow 7-4 days before introducing worms, the fresher the compost is, the longer it takes to cool back down. The chow is generally between 1 and 1/3 to 1 1/2 cup per 2.5 gal. I like your style Captain Matt for me it is just the opposite for running production buckets, I do them in the warm months, because I can only store so much compost during the winter and in the warm seasons, I am able to store yards outside (unfrozen). Once you get it down to a rocket science (which it is not, just a saying) after shredding the compost and mixing in the chow you will be able to stick your hand in the bedding and be able to feel the exact measured amount of water to add.
1 step, shred the compost through 1/8 screen
2nd add the lime, mix
3rd add the worm chow, mix
4th check moisture, add water and mix
5th wait 4-7 days to cool down, check temps
6th add worms.
P.S. I don't actually use straight water, my preference is to use casting tea or pond enzymes containing BTI
Have a wonderful Day!
thank you for sharing too, I would like to turn this from a hobby to a main source of income. This helped
@@jan1451 So, if you harvest castings on a Saturday then on a Sunday Monday or Tuesday the bedding has to get mixed up for use to be ready the coming Saturday. Usually the castings are harvested, the worm casting tea is started, the next day the bedding is prepared (shredded + chow mixed in) then after 24hrs a measured amount of tea is added and mixed, the measured amount of tea changes depending of the moisture content of the Compost. My moisture meter is my hand, it is something a person experiments with and learns, eventually a person does it so much they can just go by feel. The reason I stress a measured amount is so that when it comes time to harvest cocoons, castings and worms it is very consistent.
One advantage to using Pond Enzymes is they can be in a vessel with an air bubbler for weeks. Neither the casting tea nor the enzymes have to be used, but the microbial boost sure does help with smaller worms under 4" in length. The BTI is highly recommended because of flying insects that bread in compost piles, it kills the larva immediately after they hatch.
Thanks so much for your input
Guestions
How much lime
What is your chow composed of
What is BTI?
This is a big help. We are just getting started. This is such an important skill set to learn because the food we eat from the stores has lost the nutrients because of chemical fertilizer and pesticides that kill all the living organisms and enzymes we need to grow healthy food.
With the coming food shortage, every family needs to learn to grow healthy foods indoors hydroponics. We make a tea from the castings and feed the plants. Kratky is a way to grow hydroponics without electricity. They will start rationing electric like they do now in Puertorico. Their goal is to reduce the world population by 50% by 2025. So we all need to take responsibility and feed our families and help others as you are doing. Thnx friend, God bless. Proverbs 10:22, Deuteronomy 8:18 and 3 John 1:2…prosper and be in health…
Thank you
Nice job,
What temp.
Ranges can the worms survive while living and breeding.?
Been watching your vids and I must say you have a great operation and I've learned quite a lot so thank you Captain. Started growing wheat grass mats and I've done it with peas as well. I'm probably somewhere around where Cap was at when he did it for his own use which I do for my garden. I'm small time and don't have the equipment that Cap has but with 2 to 3 bins going, I really don't want to invest in equipment. What I do want is a great garden. Last season I produced 30 gallons give or take and this coming season I would like to double that or better. You can never have enough casting.
That's awesome. Right... I'm the same way - it's all about the garden. I'd love to see what the pea sprouts look like - shoot me a photo if you get a chance to matt@captainmattsworms.com
@@CaptainMattsWorms Ok Cap, give me a bit. I will tell you that my experimental pea mat turned out to be wonderful. The peas are almost as fast as my wheat grass in developing and created a wonderful mat actually thicker in vegetation than even the wheat. I stuck my pea mat into one of my bins about a week ago and the worms are showing lots of interest. I'm fellow old dude like you, turning 75 tomorrow and like you, I try to stay relevant and productive. My appreciation for wigglers knows no end.

Just found your channel, Thanks for sharing, I'm wondering what the bedding media that is used
I love your videos 🤗 this is Vee by the way, watching from my other worm channel 😊
Hello Cpt. Matt I have another question. Whats the mesh size for pre screening the compost/castings on the sifter. I can't pick up on that. Thanks again! I ordered my first 1000 Red Wigglers here in Germany. Looking forward to grow the population. Best wishes!
I have the same question.
شكرا جزيلا استاذنا العظيم على هذه المعلومات الجميلة.. كل الحب والاحترام لك وللعائلة
You’re welcome, Basim! Thank you!
Thanks captain Matt! I’m curious, what are the white specks in the compost? Is it perlite or lime or something else? You didn’t mention it
Thank you.
I was told soil would kill the red worms. Are you using compost soil? Thanks for sharing I have learned so much from your videos!
Yes… leaf and wood chip compost.
@@CaptainMattsWorms hi captain, for how long has the leaf and wood chip compost have been decomposing? And do you have it exposed to rain or covered? Thank you.
I looked up the sifter. How long did it take you to pay it off from selling castings?
Difficult to quantify... since the sifter was not the only startup cost. We did a in depth video about the sifter ruclips.net/video/sN7XP70UcPw/видео.html The sifter was not cheap, but for me the decision was all about calculating time (and ache) saving into my investment/startup costs.
Great video!!! Live to see what you do with the cocoons.
Thanks, Gregory. Looking forward to sharing!
Are the lights kept on 24/7 over all your bins and buckets? Do the worms try to escape or explore? Thanks!
What is the composition of the beddings.
Thanks
Do you feed the worms in 2 weeks
Well done!
Ive watched all your videos a few times and have heard differing accounts of the size of the holes on the perf screens , specifically the multi sized split screen to screen and segregate the castings and cocoons\eggs, can you please verify actual sizes, thanks
Ill have to finish one a bit later when my dogs arent around. They heard yours barking and went nuts
Love the idea of the breeder bucket instead of a tray.
What are the length measurements of 3/32 and the 1/8” holed spaces?
Do you think it’s a good ratio or would you increase one size over the other to catch more cocoons?
Should’ve been better worded question! What is the length of the screen of each section of different hole sizes? For Red wigglers and how you’re using it, would you prefer there were more 1/8” holes to catch cocoons?
Hey EW... We did a in depth video about the sifter, there’s a link in the video description to the manufacturer ruclips.net/video/sN7XP70UcPw/видео.html Not sure about best ratios - that could be a good experiment.
All the best
Great job sir and thanks for the tip.
You’re welcome, Michael!
Hi Captain Matt. I found your channel by recommendation from a friend. I am looking at breeding European Nightcrawlers, Is there a big difference between them and the Red Wigglers in regards to quantity per gallon, etc?
Are these filters we rs you use a paint filter for 5 gallon paint cans? If so most any paint supplier would have them?
Were can l get or make the table shaker ??thanks 🙏👍
Hi Captain Matt. I noticed your breeder buckets are predominantly white. Is there a reason for that or is any color ok? I assumed a darker color breeder bucket would be good to help block light, but when I saw yours were white, I wanted to understand if the lighter color served a purpose. Love your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Eph 4:15-16
The white buckets are food grade. The colored might have toxins and other chemicals in them...
How much do you feed, and how often?
We have been using trays for our breeders, usually about 600 at a time, on a 21 day cycle, but I can definitely see advantages to your process. (There are always pros and cons. 🙂) I want to experiment a little.
His Other Videos Explain His Feeding Schedule.
What do you do with the worm castings
What temperature do these worms like?
what kind of worms and where you get the worm food?
Love ❤️ NY.
Thank you .
What the ideal moisture level
I use the squeeze test that I demonstrated in the video… and align that with moisture meter readings for quick testing.
thanks for your video, why my worm bin does not see any worm eggs? is the worm bin PH level too acid? thank you for your advice.
thanks for sharing
You would make a good salesman for the shift her
Matt, I raise worms outside in containers with holes in the bottom for drainage, but I want to learn how to raise them in tubs, so I need to know how much water is to much and not enough
after i establish a red wiggler breeder bin in a 5 gal. bucket do i loosen the bedding to aeriate it just time to time or do i just leave it as is until i harvest the cocoons?
Love the video captain Mat 👍 how do you deal with worms escaping from the buckets?
Worms don’t (usually) escape unless somethings wrong w the bedding or they’re hungry & leave to go find food. Get your bedding squared away & you’ll rarely have any escapees!
Is your garage heated? I am up in Ontario Canada and I would like to extend my worm farm and use my garage. Is your CFT boxes keep your worms warm enough without heat in winter months?
Thanks a lot
Hello Captain Matt, what kind of worms work best? And can you use back yard field worms, (native worms)
Or where to get the worms from to start the breeding buckets?
Thank you from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania 🇺🇸
He Pittsburgh Coffee... I'd recommend red wigglers - and to source them specifically. There's 4000+ varieties of worms, and only a handful are prolific composters. Meme’s Worms bit.ly/34F0OW4 sells as little as ¼ lb which would be a fine start.

Sir is the white stuff in the mix perlite?
I’m experimenting with integrating food/nutrients into the bedding to decrease need for top feeding (trying to get to a set-it-and-forget-it system for the two weeks)… it’s a delicate balance since too much can heat the bin. Will share ratios after I prove success. The safe path is to top feed buckets.
Thanks sir👍🏻
@@CaptainMattsWorms , Hi Captain..Have you experimented with putting any type of aeration system, perforated pvc…etc , into to top foot or so of your bed? I love your videos! Hi there. I'm having trouble with the little flies that are coming from the bedding. Please any tips would be great. I'm a first timer. Thank you. Please keep the videos coming. I love the family interaction.
Hey John! We just discussed this topic in “Just Worming Up - Episode 2” ruclips.net/video/gc4OhiT1F0Y/видео.html
if you put plastic sheet . will it not stop oxygen beneath ?. Just a question
Hello Cpt. Matt great video. Thank you for taking the time to teach us. One question I have is whether the breeding buckets have holes in them underneath or in the sides? Thank you
Hey Pawel… no holes. Ventilation is enough from the open top. Moisture level is optimized for their 2 week stay - so no drainage needed.
What do you do with the leachate
Hey Chris... in the breeder bucket system there is no leachate - since bedding is optimally pre-moistened and kept from evaporating.
Your the best, and youve been a singing around I can tell!
Ha! The kids like to catch me singing!
You’re Awesome Captain Matt. What is the temperature and humidity of your worm room?
Hey Shawn... 60s in winter - warmer in summer.
I have watched several times now and can not catch where you added the perlite to your mixture or what the ratio was. Can you expand on that?
Hi Bryan, I’m experimenting with integrating food/nutrients into the bedding to decrease need for top feeding (trying to get to a set-it-and-forget-it system for the two weeks)… I added some of that to the bedding - it’s a delicate balance since too much can heat the bin. Will share ratios after I prove success. The safe path is to top feed buckets.
I don't know how you keep track of all those buckets. I'm confused just watching this. I saw some worms in my bin that have what looks like stripes on them (not bands of eggs) do I have a problem?
Thank you very good content
You’re welcome, David. Glad it’s helpful to you!
What is the white stuff in betting? What food do you gave them
I was experimenting with adding food to bedding - it can be done, but risk is overheating
Hey Captain Mat, I know you switch from buckets to trays, but I still like the buckets. Recently I was given a large supply of 2 gallon buckets. I know in the original 5 gallon buckets, I have 2-1/2 gallons of bedding and 250 adult worms. This works great, but can I scale this down to 1-1/2 gallon of bedding and 150 adult worms, in these 2 gallon buckets?
Hope all is well with you and the family. Your worm friend in Florida.
Hey Larry… nice - should work well and you’ll find the right ratio with a bit of experimentation.
Looks like you are in paradise
I believe you said you top dress them. That is to feed them I would think. What do you feed your worms? Thank you so much.
Pearl of wisdom= 100 worms per gallon of material
How do you hatch the cocoons?
