While this is perhaps my favorite live recording of this amazing tune, I don't see the sense in arguing over who perfoms or "covers" it the best. Every artist I have ever heard or seen perform it has done so with heart and soul, with intent and with respect. My goodness, the gal on The Voice, Krista Hughes did it justice. John Prine (RIP) alone young, and after the throat cancer...Bonnie Raitte young and older. Prine with Bonnie Raitt. Prine with Kacey Musgraves. Prine with Emmylou Harris. Susan Tedeschi. John Mayer. Tedeschi Trucks Band. Gretchen Wilson. I am sure I am leaving out a few, but those are the artists with live recordings I have encountered, some at multiple stages in their careers and lives. All bring something unique to it, something personal, something beautiful, exposing their souls for us. That's what songwriters like Prine did/do, create art that transcends. Again, this is one of the finest versions, my favorite vocally, but don't let the debate over "better" keep you from truly listening anew to the uniqueness of each signature performance ever time you hear it...imo...for what it's worth.
I saw TTB play early last year at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY. I wasn't terribly familiar with their live experience and what kind of covers they play. I'm glad I was unspoiled. I have a special connection with music. I fart around a couple chords on a guitar, but my Dad was a professional musician. A keyboard player who also played a mean flute. He passed away back in 2014. When they brought out this song, I'm not ashamed to admit that I bawled like a baby. A) Their Keyboard player (RIP Kofi) played a mean flute. But most importantly...B) My Dad was born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama. I'm grateful we live in a world where the Tedeschi Trucks Band exists.
I agree .....Susan does it right ! Beautiful.....give props to the writer though ......Prine ....prolific ....right there with Dylan ......I'd also love to here Beth Hart sing this !
I've been to 5 Tedeschi Trucks band shows in the past 2 years. Go see them! No band I have seen live in my 59 years on this planet puts on a better show. One of the bands that truly never disappoints.
That is one FINE voice. Joplin fine. Paula Cole fine. By this geezer's lights, maybe the best vocalist in the US right now. And what a flute solo, man!
Absolutely amazing jam. Kofi's flute playing is just sublime. The whole damn jam...melting into Sugaree. Oozing back into the main melody. Unreal and awe-inspiring. 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
I've always loved her version of this song the best. But in this house there's an ex-trombonist and an ex-flutist, and we both give huge thumbs up for this performance. Superlative.
This song is as good as it gets, If you really listen to these words, you could live life by them and if you did listen, you could become a much better person, it's that powerful... How the hell can a person, Go to work in the morning, then come home in the evening and have nothing to say? Think about that…
the bass player is hiding stage left in back but he is on point! and the best trombone solo in rock music! this is a perfect buffet for the ears and eyes too!
I love John Prine so much, and have seen and loved Bonnie in concert more times than i can remember, but Susan touches my soul in a way I cannot easily explain. Tears come when I hear her. Derek is a god on the guitar, but if I'm honest, I'm at their shows to hear her and the band.
Susan just keeps getting better. Her gut wrenching soul comes out as chilling as anyone else's, Janis Joplin, Aretha, you name it. Usually Derek Trucks wails the Coricidin bottle slide also as good as anyone. Duane Allman discovered the sound better than a whiskey neck slide back in the sixties. The pure sounds of the Allman Bros keeps on carrying on generationally, through this phenomenal band.
Check out Carly Simon's version. A totally different take on this song. I love her emotion delivering it. James Taylor does back up vocals on it. In every 8-bar phrase, the 7th measure has 3 beats (the rest is in 4/4).
I don’t think you can find a better version of this song. Each artist getting an opportunity to showcase their slow to fast and back to slow performance. There’s just a lot more to like about this each time you watch it. Listen with ear/head phones. Saw them at the Fox but they didn’t play this but I think I understand why at the time. Listen with earbuds to Anyhow on Tiny Desk too.
Dear Susan & Co., Watching you on RUclips makes me understand why you and your husband's band costs so much more than I can afford to pay for a ticked to see y'all in a concert. That's just plain talk from someone older and wiser who has seen some great shows since the '60's; and yours are right up there at the top of--talented, pleasing, smooth and rockin'. Some darn good all-stars you are, the whole lot of you; together. Slippin' that Jerry in the song certifies all I've said.
Alright Dave ....start a fund drive. Folks in your community donate a can of food for the less fortunate, AND a financial donation for you and your kids to see T.T.B. How does "Mapes a Difference Foundation" sound? Fill the bowls and it will fill your soul. Send the youth to blues shows/camps. Harmony for harmonicas...dream on brother!
man, BRILLIANT.i am ashamed to say that I caught you guys on a late-nite show.itd been a 13 hour work day so I just caught your band's name AND now I got ya,for Good.throwing - Shake It,Shake It Sugaree.my memories,I thank you.lynn 8-25-17.Bless You All.
I like both Bonnie Raitt version and Susan's version perhaps a little busier both excellent and Derek the seccond coming of Duane Allman Duane has ALOT of history of great playing from Layla Derek and the Dominoes to Bozz scaggs Loan me a dime and everything in between Question I have asked this before has Bonnie Raitt and Susan played together no one has answered this for me I'm sure there is knowledgeable people out there that know the answer they are both great musicians the best thing I've heard from Susan is midnight to Harlem awesome I think Derek truck is great but the originator of the slide was Dwayne old Pacific way that he plays it it takes nothing away from Derek I would like to see Derek live that would be great I am a songwriter myself and I'm on RUclips Jeffrey Lee presents auction the song somehow if you like the honor me with your opinion much respect I hope someone answers my question if I believe Bonnie Raitt best work is her older work although her your work is to such as love has no Pride Give It Up
I think this might be the best band in America.

Susan’s voice gives me chills.
I play this almost daily. Can't get enough of it
I get emotional every time I play it. ♥
Me too!
same! I own and operate a crystal shop with my wife, and it plays several times a shift.
Damn! Susan got pipes!
How does anyone not like this song? Susan is awesome. One of the hardest working performers.
I love love love them!
2.9k Thumbs up, and not a single dislike showing as of 4 Dec 23

What a beautiful beautiful rendition of this song what a beautiful rendition this song thank you
Everything about this song (Susan, Derek, drums, trombone) is incredible...But WOW, that Flute work even more so...Make room, Ian.
I never realized until this very video that I liked the trombone. Awesome.
Best live recording (imo) of this song I've ever heard.
Bonnie Raitt and John Prine.

Not that I'm saying this isn't great version (it is), but try this ruclips.net/video/toJ3ZYWRh24/видео.html
yup
highly recommend Bonnie Raitt and Ricky Lee Jones, Farm Aid
Oh my, Susan kills it! With all due respect to John Prine and Bonnie Raitt Susan's versions may be the best! Her voice brings out the goose bumps.
Tony R agreed but Bonnie will always stick it in and break it off. Susan is pulling a very close second. VERY CLOSE.
she just did it with bonnie rait somewhere
I Love this, but nobody beats John Prine's version! My two cents.
I agree .....Susan does it right ! Beautiful.....give props to the writer though ......Prine ....prolific ....right there with Dylan ......I'd also love to here Beth Hart sing this !
Trucks is one of my Favs ...always brilliant
I love how Derek just goes to that one spot on stage and completely zones out into the music and never moves
I saw Derek at 13 years young play slide lead for the ABB .. he's now the best slide in the world!!
@@curbpainterpro7350 real
I have never heard a blues trombone. This guy is terrific. Soul trombone.
Absolutely.
Beautiful. Flute and trombone solos were both amazing.
they gave me chills
Real music no auto tune dance number just passion talent.
I've been to 5 Tedeschi Trucks band shows in the past 2 years. Go see them! No band I have seen live in my 59 years on this planet puts on a better show. One of the bands that truly never disappoints.
Agreed! I just learned of them this year and saw them 4/29/23 in Birmingham AL. Hope to see them again 6/23 in Atlanta. They’re the BEST!
I was at this show.
It's amazing when it almost draws the emotion out of oneself while raising the hairs on your neck.
Class act with depth
Fantastic! Unbelievable voice.
Derek's Solos always sound like sweet molasses to me.
What a wonderful masterpiece of a band.
This song/performance should go in the national archives.
That is one FINE voice. Joplin fine. Paula Cole fine. By this geezer's lights, maybe the best vocalist in the US right now. And what a flute solo, man!
Awesome. Love
Rest in peace John
Every good band needs a really good trombone. This guy is awesome....
Goose Creek Symphony used to have a great trombonist. Big ol dude.
Transcendent performance. RIP John Prine.
Absolutely amazing jam. Kofi's flute playing is just sublime. The whole damn jam...melting into Sugaree. Oozing back into the main melody. Unreal and awe-inspiring. 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Dave I agree absolutely serene and clean!
Her voice is from an angel, heavenly!

Lowell George used a 7/16 " Craftsman deep well socket. :)
Best I've heard from the group. Every solo is a masterpiece and Susan's voice is great.
This woman's voice reaches into my soul where music that I really like goes. She reminds me of Janice Joplin but 2018 ! The band is awesome too .
Just think their best musician is backstage taking a break, they are that good. Best rendition of this song I have ever heard hands down.
If you haven't seen these guys live, what the hell are you waiting on!
A pandemic! :(
@@skiLLinho 10 months later, and there's light at the end of the tunnel...
Oh, hell forget my comment about the trombone. This is great stuff. Shout-out to John Prine.
Dereck's solo wow he makes that guitar scream wow absolutely beautiful
Very soulfull rendition of this great song!
If there ever was a song written for a voice it lives with this crew forever.
Love this song, great rendition of it! Thanks for sharing!
Best version of the song ever!
How can 4 people dislike this.....Susan is just Sublime

What a wonderful flute performance.
You are who I was looking for to sign this song.
This band is amazing, but they play amazing songs also and have a respect for their elders.
These guys are the ultimate working band they hit the covers out of the park you must go!
RIP John

Nice version of a geat song!
Incredible!
Damn that trombone solo is the Truth!
Love Love Love!
This song was written for Tedeschi, even though she was probably born the year it was written.
The angels weep when Susan sings...
Great stuff.
We saw TTB about a year ago & it was fantastic!
If you don't appreciate this and how powerful it is... please just shaddap.
Been a long time since I saw someone make love to a trombone like that. Awesome.
just luvthis band..thats right LUV....

That's what we call in Ireland, the dog's bollox. Wow.
Whatever you said I agree
RIP John Prine
awesome
Rip John prine
Amo a esta mujer!!!!!!!
Maybe not John's best song, but it's pretty close. It's certainly the most covered. Susan, as always, nails it.
Musica di Alto livello.emozionante
Damn!
My Pops, a trombone brilliance would have cried...
