The Sega hardware did not support this unusual bus cycle and ignored the write-back phase. Two games, Gargoyles from Buena Vista Interactive, and Ex-Mutants from Sega make use of the TAS instructions and expect it not to write to memory. As a result, these games work on original Sega machines but not the Majesco Genesis 3, which has correct support for TAS." And this: "There was also a bug fix with the memory controller, this bug was exploited for certain effects on games such as Disney’s Gargoyles and as such these games are also unplayable on a Genesis 3."
The lack solder is also the reason why game genie won't work (and a wire on some model 3s). If you do the fix you can use your game genie to negate the exploit in Gargoyles so it will run on a Genesis 3. The code is: HEKT-AYX6 HELT-AYX0 HH2A-AYYC HHZT-CYTL

Roger Gurman Virtua Racing was hardly boring. It's a technical achievement too. Had SEGA utilized the Sega Virtua Processor in more games, the Genesis would have lived on until the new millennium, quite possibly. A little dramatic there with the "it almost killed me", aren't we? I never enjoyed Road Rash. The graphics were dated, even when the games were being released. It's pretty hard on the eyes.
Roger Gurman I don't like motorcycles. It's foolish to disregard Virtua Racing, especially the arcade version. It was an incredible game at the time. Are you a Libra in your late twenties?
I just recently got my hands on a Genesis 3. It’s so ridiculously tiny! I love it though. It’s perfect for sitting on my computer desk when I wanna make gaming vids. I have a Model 1 and Model 2 as well, along with the Genesis Nomad. I’m on a mission to collect most, if not all, Sega consoles. Sega was my fave as a kid.
Bought one in 1999 at wal-mart for $19.99. Had a deadbeat roommate that “borrowed” it and moved out soon after in about 2012. Never saw it again. Just bought a mint one on eBay for $55. Now I just need to get my 3 games again. Road rash 2, gunstar heroes, and NHL 94.
actaully Norm, Majesco doesn't work in the video game industry anymore, at least as a 3rd party publisher. See, they had the honor, and sadly the misfortune of publishing Psychonauts, which as we all know was awesome……to bad it sold like Manowar T-shirts at a Justine Beiber Concert. It lost Majesco a lot of money so they had to pull out of that market. Hey, they recently closed their doors, how bout an episode on Lucas Arts?

i assume it wasnt expensive and some parents will buy kids any video game system for a cheap price since they dont know any better. Even though it may not be what the kid wanted.
I have a Majesco re-release in a proper Sega Genesis clamshell, Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure from Konami. I'm not sure if that's the only Genesis game that Majesco put in a clamshell.
The music you hear at 0:16 was the music from the end of an intermission film that you've seen at drive-in theaters where an announcer says "It's showtime folks! Enjoy the show!"
My parents bought us a genesis 2 when we were kids, we had it a lot of years and broke down on us, we had a lot of games still but couldn't play them. when I was able to save money as a kid doing chores and favors for neighbors, I went to buy a new one and they had the genesis 3, so that's what I had to get, overall was happy with it.
RUclips Commentater I see what you meant there, I've heard of a lot of people modding their Sega Genesis console specifically the model ones with direct AV jacks on the back of the system. But it's not something I do, because the model 2 can do stereo out the back and I'm perfectly fine with that. And if you really want AV jacks on any genesis, just connect the Sega CD to it, and use the stereo jacks that come built in the Sega CD. No modding required. Buts that's my opinion.
RUclips Commentater That's another option too. My Sega CD collection is fairly new so I don't have all of the titles I want, but the ones I have are ones I enjoy playing are: - Battlecorps - BC Racers - Chuck Rock II: Son of Chuck - Ecco The Dolphin - Ecco II The Tides of Time - Final Fight CD - Silpheed - Sonic the Hedgehog CD - Thunderstrike Sonic CD is my favorite title, but it's also everyone else's so a close second would be Final Fight CD, then the Eccos. =D Final fight is pretty kick ass, and I love the exploration in the Ecco the Dolphin Games. =) Some other titles I'd like to get soon are: - Android Assault - Chuck Rock - Earthworm JIM: Special Edition - Lords of Thunder - Lunar - Lunar II - Mortal Kombat CD - Popful Mail - Robo Aleste - Shining Force CD - Sol-Feace - Soul Star - Space Ace - Vay and quite a few others soon. But I'm not paying the retail price for some those games. xD
RUclips Commentater I've heard a lot of good things about Popful mail and Vay, but they're so expensive, I'm waiting until I can find mine at a swap meet or something for cheaper. That's precisely why Snatcher isn't on there. Both Snatcher and Keio Flying Squadron are way out of my league xD Thanks for the compliments and luck, it's been fun so far collecting for the system, and I'm excited to see what I find next. =P
I really can't describe how lovely this little variant is. With the right mods (audio and 32x) and a Mega Everdrive cart, you could have some SERIOUS fun with this thing
+Valet2 A quote from the video.. "In 1993 SEGA released the Genesis model 2. It was lighter, had stereo sound & is the most common version of the system." This statement seems, IMHO, to imply that the model one version did not have stereo sound. It's misleading & should have included more information about the changes to the model 2. For example .. ...", it had stereo sound incorporated into a the AV out socket... etc". Indeed many people thought the model one didn't have stereo as the DIN/AV out socket had mono only regardless of whether it was set up using the RF or AV cables. The AV cable for the model one system had two RCA connectors. Yellow for composite video & white for mono sound. There was stereo from the headphone jack. We who are in the know understand this. My comment does not in any way imply, suggest or state that the model 2 Genesis/Mega Drive did not have stereo sound. It was a correction of the misleading content contained in the video.
The headphone jack didn't count, as it couldn't be loud or anything. And to get true stereo you could run to a home entertainment system, you needed a Sega CD. Saying the model 1 had stereo sound is misleading.
Model 1 has a mono sound output at the rear, but the headphone output is stereo. Model 2 has both stereo and mono sound output. But Model 3 has only a mono sound output.although it uses SEGA 315-6123 chip contains YM3438 (improvement of YM2612) but the Mixer amplifier has only mono.
I have a Model 3 that I picked up several years back for about $30. I find it to be convenient to hook up when compared with my Model 1, to which I have a Sega CD and 32X attached. Back in 2012, I played through Phantasy Star IV on my Model 3 in a spatially challenged apartment and that experience alone justified the price of the purchase for the console.
IF you're a die hard fan and or collector yes this is a must have just for the fact it adds to the collection. The sum of the games it plays is small but some are cool and you know looks like a neat little system. I never used it as a kid I was into the oG SEGA Genesis but didn't with the followup systems until DreamCast. LOVE that system...
I remember using the headphone jack a lot on the model 1. It helped me not get caught for not sleeping for school. My mom never knew why I was always tired. I also used it when I was at my grandparents house because the ''RING'' sound got on their nerves. This was very handy and gave me the best experience in my childhood. :')
There is another way to identify Majesco re-release games. The Majesco re-release games front labels did not have gloss on their front labels (they look cheap and almost pirate-like, but are not blurry or anything), and on SNES games the precautions on the back are molded directly into the plastic and are not a printed label. The plastic on the SNES carts also is lighter and feels cheaper than the standard issue carts. At least all of the SNES and Genesis games I have from them have been like this.
I have a genesis 3, i bought it around 2013, it was being sold in a mall, it was with other game things like ps2 controllers. The box was really different to the one in the video, it was blue and had a weird sonic instead of the 3d blast sonic and the console doesn't say "Genesis 3" on the top. it came with two six button controllers and a pirate 4 in 1 cartdrige wich had the Moonwalker game in it and me at the time being a HARDCORE Michael Jackson fan, i bought the system. Also something that is pretty cool is that it has a NTSC and PAL switch under the console. It still works... I mean is just a few years old.
My dad is an avid yard seller, and back in the 2000s he come home and said "Son tell me what kind of Nintendo this is" I said "It's definitely not a Nintendo, it's Sega and I never seen this kind" so we looked it up. I liked the model 3 for it's space saving, travel size etc.
The department store I used to work at (up to 2005) got a bunch of these Genny 3s in for Christmas 1999 and sold them for 19.99 USD (and a number of the games for 12.99 USD). They sold like hotcakes, and we'd get them in at least a couple more times over the course of a few months. The last time I remember was around Black Friday 2000, where they were a doorbuster for 14.99 USD and the games 9.99 USD. I still have a 6-in-1 game collection in the box that Majesco sold for it.
I had the Mark I. I ran it through my 4 channel surround sound system. The only way I could do it was with a 3.5 mm to RCA adapter in the headphone jack. But, it worked perfectly. So the Mark I _did_ have stereo sound, but you had to tap into the headphone jack to use it.
I got one after struggling to play games on the Genesis emulators like the AtGames and even the Hyperkin ones. They run so slowly for some reason on those emulators. Also, some games simply won't even work on them. I looked into getting an original Genesis and was turned off by the high price and huge size of it. So, I got a Gen 3. I'm fine with it not working with the add-on hardware as I wasn't all that impressed by those things and their games even back in the day when I was playing games on my roommate's Gen 1 in college. All I want to play on it are the classic games like the Sonic games, Golden Axe games, Columns, Gauntlet 4 etc. Gauntlet 4 was the one that was really a 'system seller' for me as it played at a slow crawl on the emulators and finally convinced me that I needed an original console. I really like the Gen 3 so far. I've not run into problems with games being incompatible with it, but that's partly because the clerks at my local game store where I got the Gen 3 know that I have one and would tell me if I was considering a game that wouldn't work on it. It's a great store.
Great video, love how informative it is with that little bit of extra quirk! The Sega Genesis 3 was a pretty good gaming system, particularly for kids, or new gamers at the time.
After watching this video, I immediately went on Ebay and got myself a Genesis Model 3. And I do not regret getting it, because, obviously, it's free of the Sega CD and 32X. I also like it because it's a nice portable Genesis(although I'm still trying to get a Nomad(also because your video make it look so cool)).
This was some great information! I never knew there was a genesis 3! I had model 2 and the Sega cd growing up! Great games, great system, and great storytelling!
The fact that this thing can play USA games as well as region free Japanese games is a huge win in my book. I almost regret buying a Japanese Mega Drive when I could have just gotten this. 😂
"Should you pick up a Genesis 3?" Honestly, I wouldn't. If I were to pick up a Genesis, I'd shoot for the model 1 or model 2. Virtua Racing is just too good to pass up.

A little dramatic there with the "it almost killed me", aren't we?
I never enjoyed Road Rash. The graphics were dated, even when the games were being released. It's pretty hard on the eyes.
***** Have you even tried the third installment? At least I gave Virtua Racing a fair chance. Not only is it boring, it's hard on my eyes.
Roger Gurman I don't like motorcycles. It's foolish to disregard Virtua Racing, especially the arcade version. It was an incredible game at the time.
Are you a Libra in your late twenties?
This brings back memories, I picked a Genesis 3 up in a Caldor when they were going out of business. So much nostalgia in one video
I love this guy. Finally, someone who talks about video games on youtube who isn't a cussing buffoon.
Why you dissing James Rolfe?
Pushon Bhattacharya How dare you talk shit about the Angry Video Game Nerd!
It's also nice to see that this is the most toxic comment chain I've seen in a while
Oh man up. AVGN cusses because he is an adult. You should be able to handle it. Grow the fuck up

Love it new Historian episode!!
I have a Genesis Model 3 and I can confirm the"it's to light" part...
AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME Work brotha as ALWAYS! Really Dig the Ren & Stimpy beats in the Background
The Genesis model 1 was the most common version to me. Genesis console just isn't the same without the dark red on it.
Wis Dom agreed! It reminds me of the past!
Yes of course
liked your production and music on this video- hope your videos are more like this in the future!
actaully Norm, Majesco doesn't work in the video game industry anymore, at least as a 3rd party publisher.
I'd have to disagree with that. They just recently released a Zumba game. www.majescoent.com/
Oh! Okay then. So how bout an episode on Lucas Arts?
Or how bout a history of Oddworld?
+Gaming Historian Can you do History of Spyro
+Jaeger Newman Oddworld Inhabitants is one of the greatest and most creative studios around since 1997. Having worked for their publisher at the time (GT Interactive Software), I had worked on the PC version of the game on various configurations that I'd mix and match around our lab at the Redwood City location. Good times!
Norm you're my hero among soo many retro channels I watch daily like a sick marathoner. The history expertise you share with us just soothes my soul not Kidding. Thank you for all your hard work finding out the facts of these epic part of our childhoods. Not saying you really say what you prefer your passion for gaming just shows. Although I'm a SEGA Master System guy when everyone had Nintendo when some even thought I was legit making it up lol. Nintendo was huge clearly especially here in North America. I'm here in Boston MA and once again I Never knew of the Genesis 3! Thank You! 🎮🎮🎮
Man these are coolvids. Keep it up buddy
I've got my Model 1 from 1989.
Still works flawlessly
Does it still work
Who the hell would want a new Game Gear in the year 2000?!?
+1ex1uger Collectors? People who missed out on the originals and want it new?
+FregenDied Wow, because it was discontinued in 2002?
i assume it wasnt expensive and some parents will buy kids any video game system for a cheap price since they dont know any better. Even though it may not be what the kid wanted.
1ex1uger I think it would be directed to people who were late to the Game Gear's prime.
It seems like they would at least improve the hardware in some way like make it more compact. They could especially make a more compact Nomad!
I had a Genesis 3. Got it from Kaybee Toys around 1999. Loved that little thing!
here in argentina you can find more sega genesis than ebola :v
leonix creed Are you boasting or complaining?
complaying about the ebola :C
I'll travel to Argentina in the future and that got me interested. But are the consoles cheap? They are $50 here in Brazil.
emmm kinda :T
leonix creed Can you also find Master Systems easily there? I know that the Master System and Genesis were popular in that part of the world.
We had that original Sega with the headphone jack and volume. My cousin's had the other one.
I have a Majesco re-release in a proper Sega Genesis clamshell, Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure from Konami. I'm not sure if that's the only Genesis game that Majesco put in a clamshell.
Yay, a new Gaming Historian! Feels like it has been a while, good sir ^_^
I still have my model 2!
I bought mine new, about 25yrs ago. Unlike my new G2 bought in 93, this one still works fine. Then again, I don't "jerk" it around :P
It shipped with a 6-button controller?? Wow, nice.
@@rap6439 You clearly never played fighting games on the Genesis/Mega Drive then.
The music you hear at 0:16 was the music from the end of an intermission film that you've seen at drive-in theaters where an announcer says "It's showtime folks! Enjoy the show!"
Golden axe!! Been looking for the name of that game for aaaaaages!! Good times haha
First gaming historian episode I’ve ever watched.
Majesco is the company behind "a boy and his blob" for the wii! Amazing game!
+Ricardo Franco Again, Majesco RERELEASES GAMES meaning they did not make it
They have that on the NES as well :>
0:34 got to love the spongebob background music
Yes and no. At least this is worth getting compared to that other Genesis clone with built-in games.
It's not worth getting. The version one is the best
@@MybeautifulandamazingPrincess yeah the version 1 can have backwards compatibility and all the other accessories
My parents bought us a genesis 2 when we were kids, we had it a lot of years and broke down on us, we had a lot of games still but couldn't play them. when I was able to save money as a kid doing chores and favors for neighbors, I went to buy a new one and they had the genesis 3, so that's what I had to get, overall was happy with it.
model 2 does not have stereo sound only model one using the headpone in the front plug
Yes it does. The model 2 does stereo out the back via the AV port. You just have to buy the stereo cable from SEGA.
RUclips Commentater I'm not sure I know what you mean. Hacking what? The system via mods? or something else.
My Sega CD collection is fairly new so I don't have all of the titles I want, but the ones I have are ones I enjoy playing are:
- Battlecorps
- BC Racers
- Chuck Rock II: Son of Chuck
- Ecco The Dolphin
- Ecco II The Tides of Time
- Final Fight CD
- Silpheed
- Sonic the Hedgehog CD
- Thunderstrike
Sonic CD is my favorite title, but it's also everyone else's so a close second would be Final Fight CD, then the Eccos. =D Final fight is pretty kick ass, and I love the exploration in the Ecco the Dolphin Games. =)
Some other titles I'd like to get soon are:
- Android Assault
- Chuck Rock
- Earthworm JIM: Special Edition
- Lords of Thunder
- Lunar
- Lunar II
- Mortal Kombat CD
- Popful Mail
- Robo Aleste
- Shining Force CD
- Sol-Feace
- Soul Star
- Space Ace
- Vay
and quite a few others soon.
Both Snatcher and Keio Flying Squadron are way out of my league xD
Thanks for the compliments and luck, it's been fun so far collecting for the system, and I'm excited to see what I find next. =P
I decided to sub. Because you helped me stop from swallowing a bottle of Tylenol. Thank you for inadvertently helping me.
Why do you care?
I got my for $3 or $4 dollar at the thrift store while back in of late 90s or early 2000s.🤓🎮📺
I really can't describe how lovely this little variant is. With the right mods (audio and 32x) and a Mega Everdrive cart, you could have some SERIOUS fun with this thing
Everdrive works on this, you just need to set it to Genny 3 mode
Not a fan, I will stick with my model 1, I would consider a model 2 at some point but I've zero interest in this one.
i really enjoy these, thank you.
My Model 1 Genesis doesn't say High Definition graphics.
Which I'm okay with.
The non "High Definition Graphics" Gennys were later versions of the Genesis 1 hardware.
mykie242 I read that somewhere
@@mykie242 but y hd ??????? It hasn't got good graphics (I know but compared to the new consoles is nothing)

The original MegaDrive/Genesis had stereo sound.
+Valet2
A quote from the video..
"In 1993 SEGA released the Genesis model 2. It was lighter, had stereo sound & is the most common version of the system."
This statement seems, IMHO, to imply that the model one version did not have stereo sound.
+paspax I used to have a Genesis 2. when I was in 2nd grade... in probably 2012 or 2011 or 2010
LOLSTER239 meh
I still have my Mega Drive II
paspax I wanted to find my old Sega genisis carts to get a retron 5, but sadly I didn't find them
The headphone jack didn't count, as it couldn't be loud or anything. And to get true stereo you could run to a home entertainment system, you needed a Sega CD. Saying the model 1 had stereo sound is misleading.
Holy crap, that sound at 1:16! I was wearing headphones and I thought something was behind me.
Still prefer my big ol' model 1 Mega Drive thank you.
Model 1 has a mono sound output at the rear, but the headphone output is stereo.
Model 2 has both stereo and mono sound output.
But Model 3 has only a mono sound output.although it uses SEGA 315-6123 chip contains YM3438 (improvement of YM2612) but the Mixer amplifier has only mono.
you could have cleaned better that Megadrive model 2... its full of dust :P
Genesis* fixed
First gaming historian episode of ever watched.
You are better off skipping the genesis 3 due to game compatibility.
It seems like a clone console before they became popular.

It Is Pretty Much A Clone Console That Was Given An Official Status
The main draw of the Genesis for me was how badass the console looked. This one is lam pst cute in how little it is... Great video Norm!
I’m thinking about getting a genesis and this video honestly helped me so much
This was my first console ever when I was 7 back in 98' Thank you dad I miss you and will never forget ❤🎉
Wow you are good! I like watching your Historian Videos.
I do not think I have ever heard anyone better than you.
Cool vid, I rarely see these Sega's around anymore.
My first console when I was five, sister bought it for me. Endless memories!
man, your videos are addictive!!
A Genesis 3 was the first sega console I got and the second console I remember playing. Still works perfectly to this day.
Too late already got one, good to know it didn't sell for long. Glad too see more videos :)
This was my first console. Thank you for the video.
Remember getting this for Christmas one year.
Love the Ren and Stimpy/Spongebob music in this
I love the music at the beginning of this video xD
Yup! This was my Sega!
Great Video, Hope to See More Gaming Historian Videos. ^_^
I Love the Earthbound-Chars in the Background :3
I use to have this model :) it was the best playing Sonic in the 90's
"Should you pick up a Genesis 3?"
Honestly, I wouldn't. If I were to pick up a Genesis, I'd shoot for the model 1 or model 2. Virtua Racing is just too good to pass up.
The first Sega Genesis I had was the 2nd model. I got it for Christmas back in '93. It came with Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Great memories.
Thanks for the feedback.
We had Sega Mega Drive model 2. So many good childhood memories 🥲
