  • When you hear the words, “a person with dementia,” what do you picture? Someone in later years (80 or 90) or something else? Is that always the case? The PAC Team discusses some of the steps to consider after a person has been diagnosed.
There is no one right answer for everyone, but at PAC we encourage trying to find your strengths and what is going well, rather than focusing on what is lost. Instead of thinking that life is over, think about what is working and how you want to live out the rest of your life.
Many of the PAC Core Team (people living with dementia) have decided to live well. Check out what some of them are doing by visiting teepasnow.com/...

I was diagnosed with vascular dementia after a year of seeing a neurologist. MRI, CT SCANS Testing, silly clock drawing, questions about how many tables are in the room, name five words so on and so on. I knew something was wrong a year before I saw the neurologist and had talk with my GP. So that means my diagnosis was at least two years in the making.
Once I got the diagnosis I was told by the neurologist that I didn’t need her anymore and to follow up with GP. I was told nothing about vascular dementia or what to expect except that THINGS would get worse. I so feel that I am in the dark here. Anything I know is from watching RUclips and most of that is from a caregivers point of view. Just saying that we need help with this. It is scary enough just knowing there is a time limit and I’m running out of time. Thank you for letting me give my in the dark experience.

I’m so scared and troubled for my mom. She’s 94. She had a stroke in 2017. I think it caused vascular dementia. We’re trying to get her in a better situation cause we’re disgusted with the lack of effort in caring for her where she is.

Is there different types of testing for different types of dementia? In my local area they only test for Alzheimer's.

Hello again @Victoria Johnson! Shelly from PAC responding. I'm wondering if you might be interested in learning a bit more about vascular dementia or other dementias? You might want to check out a webinar series we did teepasnow.com/product/getting-connected-understanding-different-dementias-12-part-series-recorded-webinar/ or if you don't want the entire series, you can select the ones you want to watch. A final option is if you would like to talk about your concerns, consider reaching out our consulting team for a free 30 minute consult (consult@teepasnow.com)

A diagnosis doesn't mean you need to loose all independence and self sufficiency. There is still much you can still do and be. Is just a little different now.
