I think Open Range is the last great Western film. Costner took the classic Western approach and exhibited it perfectly. All the performances are perfect and the cinematic phrasing of shots and editing is exemplary. Absolutely wonderful reaction. I'm truly interested in your Western novel. I loved how you emphasize how violence isn't glorified in this film. All good Westerns do this.
I really like Hostiles (2017), directed by Scott Cooper. Although I'd admit that it is a "different" kind of western. And I like Dances with Wolves and Open Range more than Hostiles, but in my opinion Hostiles is good and has deeper content than just gunfights.
Brimstone I would say is undertated And bone tomahawk although that's a horror Western but still a Western. The proposition is a good Australian one aswell.
I love that you reacted to this one. This movie is -very- underappreciated. It is also (with a few obvious exceptions) the most realistic shootout in my opinion with lots of missed shots, and everything happens at close range. And you're right, the range wars were a big thing in Texas. I loved it! ❤👍
@@kregmaffewsI like Open Range, but Unforgiven did the whole 'realistic gunfight', and western myth vs the truth, just a year before, Clint even does a speech about it in the movie. This, Tombstone, Jeremiah Johnson,Outlaw Josey Wales, Dances With Wolves and The Cowboys are my favorite westerns of all time and never miss the opportunity to watch or watch a reaction to them.
One of my all time favorite westerns. Love this movie. visited my land down in Nevada. And it was the first time I saw a herd of horses roaming free on our acres. Watching them roam with the mountains at their backs. Was quite majestic to see.
On the DVD Kevin does a version of the Movie where he does commentary through out and the biggest thing was If it didnt rain that night they woulda moved on in the morning and None of this stuff woulda ever happened. Crazy
You have to see Broken trail, with Robert Duvall (2006). Duvall considered it the last, the capstone of a trilogy of westerns he had done (Lonesome Dove, Open Range, and Broken Trail.) It's amazing, heart-warming, gut-wrenching, gritty, heroic... anyway, you're the writer; I reckon you can say it better than me. Thank you for sharing this with us!
Excellent pick, _Open Range_ is a masterpiece. _Jeremiah Johnson_ with Robert Redford is another Western classic worth watching. And _Bull Durham_ is essential Costner. Recommended.
Madison! This is one of my favorite movies and I’m so glad you really liked it too. I hope your western novel is coming along and moving in a forward direction. When it’s published, I will buy a copy. I hope you offer it on your website. For what it’s worth, I think you’d really enjoy Kevin in Field of Dreams.
Other Costner ones you might like: Wyatt Earp; The Hatfield's and MCoy's (series) and The Highwaymen. Dances with Wolves was written by Costner's friend. He tells the story on Graham Norton. The Assassination of Jesse James is a particularly good revisionist western (from a novel), as is Seraphim Falls. As long as I'm talking you gotta see Lonesome Dove (series 1), from a novel by Larry McMurty.
I have the 2 disc collector's edition of Open Range which is my absolute favorite. I have seen a lot of Western movies in my 75+ years, but none were as good as this one. Disc One has the Open Range feature film, and after that is the audio commentary with Kevin Costner in which you will watch the movie again but you will hear Kevin explaining various scenes. Disc Two has special features: "America's Open Range"; "Beyond Open Range"; Deleted Scenes; "Story Boarding: Open Range;; and Music Video Montage. If you noticed how loud the gunshots were, that was intentional. Kevin explained that in a real gunfight, it is loud and scary. The scene in which Kevin's character shoots the shotgun at the mirror, the loud bang caught the cameraman off guard, which the effect can be seen at the same time.
Just found her Channel and love that she does Westerns... The shootout was far from "Authentic" with six shooter's firing way more than 6 rounds a bunch of times, the shotgun blast threw the building with the guy flying in the air. Horrible. Saying that it is gritty good....
One of my favorite westerns... or movies in general. Bob Duvall is stellar as usual, not to mention Costner. The perfect ratio of killing to romance. lol.
I never saw more beautiful tears followed by such beautiful words in the same moment, "All Bets are Off, Kill them All." So well said. Great Reaction.... you are really fun to watch cry..... no worries,, You always make me cry at the same time.
Not a fan of Coster myself...but this is one of the trio of westerns in which I enjoy his performance. Open Range, Dances with Wolves and best of all his joyous idiot Jake in the all star cast of Silverado. Robert Duvall is of course once again a joy to watch.
One of the things I like about this film is that Michael Gambon (a.k.a. the second Professor Dumbledore in Harry Potter) used his native Irish accent from Dublin.
I really enjoy your reactions, thanks. May I recommend the Louis L'Amour story, 1991 TV FIlm "Conagher". Classic and wholesome with a real life feel, chock full of one liner keepers, and romance too! Sam Elliot plays the rugged cowboy. One of my favorites for 3 decades!
One of the greatest westerns ever made, love the characters, the story, the scenery, all of it, I am very glad you watched this, and enjoyed it thoroughly, enjoyed watching along with you, and seeing it for the first time through your eyes and emotions, excellent reaction! Can't wait to see more!!!...👍👍👍👍👍
The owner of the coffee shop is Herb Kohler, of Kohler Co. in Shebygan, Wis. He helped finance the film and the premiee, or one of the premieres was held in Sheboygan because of him. I love the gun fight at the end.
Madison , I think you should check out "Big Country" it's a great Western and was over shadowed back in the day. Gregory Peck, Charleston Heston, Gene Simmons, Chuck Connors. It plays like a well written novel.
I watch this movie once a year, usually around my birthday and try to share the experience. Saw it in the theater and I’ve been revisiting it ever since.
Great western. Someday check out Lonesome Dove. It’s one of the best mini series ever created for TV. It also stars Robert Duval as well as Tommy Lee Jones.
You should watch the movie Hidalgo with Viggo Mortenson. It’s about a cowboy who races his mustang in long distance races in the 1890’s and gets invited to race in a cross desert race in Arabia. Great movie! Since you love horses, you would probably really like this movie.
For fans of Westerns, I have to recommend a mini series I stumbled across called The English, starring Emily Blunt. It's absolutely fantastic, so good I had to watch it again a couple days later. Based on Madison's love of this one, Silverado and Dances, she would love The English.
Great Movie, Great Cast, Great Director, Great Performances By Everyone In This Movie & As Always Love Seeing Your Reactions To All These Great Movie's Sweetheart
how this only has 447 likes I dont know. I love your reactions and this movie is probably my favorite western ever with Unforgiven right behind. keep up the good work
The merit of all the characters is shown and developed in an indirect, humble way. You want to learn more about each of them - their history, views, and how they've been carrying the burden of the bullies who run the town. Calming yet engaging ...how our movies used to be.
Just found your channel. Love that you love westerns. I've been dying for someone to review/ react to "The Big Country", one of my all time favorite westerns. Gregory Peck, Charlton Heston and Burl Ives who won an academy award for supporting actor. A lot of great themes explored and well worth the time of 3 hours.
Another great western is "Shane". The central theme is open range vs homesteaders. Alan Ladd's character is much like Charlie, a gunfighter who wants to change and is forced by a greedy land owner to return to violence. The book is excellent.
I absolutely love this movie. I haven't seen many of the classic westerns of the 40's, 50's, and 60's, but I am still a huge western fan. This is easily top 5 for me. Probably top 3. I saw a quote from Robert Duvall that I think you'd like Madison. He called Westerns the true American art form. He said something like, "Italians have opera, the English have Shakespeare, and we have The Western". He's got a great point.
This is a great film. I love it. I love all the characters in this. They're all interesting at some level to me. And you're right about the sweet love story portrayed here, among the hard horror of conflict. I'm right there with ya, crying over this movie. Part of it is because I've been so bad at relationships myself. Seeing them find each other and have what seems like such a pure interest in each other, and my imagination of them going on together, it's just great. Something I wish I was able to do, but haven't. Thanks for this reaction Madison.
I think open range is the best cowboy movie ever cuz it has a good gunfight, has a good love story, Kevin Costner is great in it it's just an all-around great cowboy movie I love it. And I'm glad you finally get to watch it. It's right up there with Dances With Wolves.
Deep Cut Mads; I love how you give some thought and time in your post comments - very few reactors even do this (at times I'm like 'Did you even enjoy the movie?') Underrated.
Have you read any of Robert B Parker’s westerns ? One of them is the movie, Appaloosa. He’s known for his detective books, including the Spenser series.
Also, I grew up 9n westerns for the most part in a time before cable and satellite became common. A lot of my western diet was reruns of gunsmoke, bonanza, John Wayne movies and occasionally others sprinkled through Saturday movie nights like Rare Breed with Jimmy Stewart and some comedy westerns like the apple dumpling gang. Didn't seem like westerns would make another glorious return until Tombstone. You hear that music and that F YEAH! feeling hits hard! Open range though has more of that classic western feel, and I love it! Open Range and Django are both modern classics to me.
I like Duvall in this a lot, it reminds me of his character in Lonesome Dove, a great mini-series in my opinion. I'm a huge Costner fan,I think you should watch Wyatt Earp. It wasn't as popular as tombstone but in my opinion it's a better movie. Dennis quaid's portrayal of doc Holliday is brilliant.
This flick has one of the best gunfights in a Western I've ever seen. And Annette Bening - I think I like her as much as you like Kevin Costner! haha. Thx for your reaction.
Madison, I'm very much a novice regarding western novels, but I've been checking a bit. Just curious, which are your favorite western novels? Lonesome Dove (1985) by Larry McMurtry? Shane (1949) by Jack Schaefer? Hondo (2004) by Louis L'Amour?
Another great reaction! You might want to check out Robert Duvall's Oscar Win for best Actor in "Tender Mercies". It's a very touching Indie film playing a has been country singer/writer.
Just discovered your channel tonight. Open Range is my all time favorite western. But if you want to watch an entertaining Western where the two main leads are females, watch "Bandidas" Penelope Cruz & Salma Hayek. The first time I watched it was when I bought it on DVD. I figured if nothing else... It's Cruz & Hayek! 😊 Well turned out to be a pretty darn good movie. NO SPOILERS: but it's about 2 women from completely different backgrounds, who are forced to join forces to right a wrong. They don't exactly get along and are constantly snipping at each other and trying to one up each other, pretty funny, and good movie. 👍
So you like wild horses? Just a suggestion, watch " The Misfits " with Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable in both their last movies about modern cowboys and wild mustangs . Great performances also by Monty Cliff and Eli Wallach. Also a love story! ( Old man who knows what he's talking about... about movies, anyway. )
The Western is as old as The West. I've heard Kevin Costner has planned some multiple film projects regarding the story of The West (i guess we'll see; he saw How The West Was Won in Cinerama as a young boy). Have you seen or reacted to My Darling Clementine (1946, fictionalized Wyatt Earp, but still highly regarded), Shane (1953), or even the controversial Heaven's Gate (1980, Director's Cut)? Much obliged for your reactions. :)
On the subject of Private Property, you are right. John Locke said it best, any property you are using and cultivating (or raising a herd), its it yours. As long as you are actively using that land. The Cattle Barons were not using their land, especially here. You never see any of Mayor's cattle or how he is using the land. Just claiming the land does not make it yours. (And in these days, you didn't buy land, you took it and used it for herding)
Definitely check out Tombstone staring Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, Powers Boothe and a host of other great actors. And Quigley Down Under staring Tom Selleck.
This is like the perfect Western movie! I love it, and I love your reaction! There's another Western that has this feel to it, and also Robert Duvall, and that is Broken Trail. They actually herd animals in that movie, like in this. But horses, not cattle. Not many cowboy movies show cowboys doing their job. I guess City Slickers is kind of a cowboy movie too?
Excellent review. You mentioned wild mustangs, and I think you should do a reaction to HIDALGO, a wild mustang that won many long distance races. The shootout is still one of the best in any movie, and one of the best westerns. I put it up there with SHANE, where a gunslinger just wants to be an ordinary person. Of course, Jack Palance, as Jack Wilson, is the ultimate villain.
One of my top 5 John Wayne movies you may like, El Dorado, with an excellent cast many you may or may not be familiar with. A western series you may be interested in Lonesome Dove with Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall. Lengthy mini series about 6 hours long would probably want to do it in segments.
Thank you for the reactions to some great films that reflect part of what makes America unique. The western is worth exploring with good examples from every decade. If you really liked this one, I'd like to recommend Broken Trail. Keep up these great reactions.
To me, “Open Range” is the last great traditional western. Since then, they’ve been deconstructed westerns, character studies that take place in the old west, or modernized with hip hop beats in the background and hard rock.
Costner and Duvall ... too guys who are always great on screen. This movie is fantastic, forth to rewatch time to time👍 Now that I started to write comment, I liked to recommed a movie Quigley Down Under. Western Adventure that locates to Australia... starring Tom Selleck and Alan Rickman. Action, comedy, drama. And amazing soundtrack 👍
Kevin Costner in “The Postman” is another one of my favorites of his. It’s not exactly a western but it has that feel….maybe because of all the horses?? A great one if you haven’t seen it though 👍
horses are not indigenous to north america. they were brought during the spanish conquest of south and central america. interesting to consider what indian culture/society/warfare was like before the introduction of the horse
Awesome reaction Madison! I enjoyed it very much! The last western I've watched that I enjoyed was: Hostiles (2017), directed by Scott Cooper. It was on my list to watch and finally watched it. I imagine that you have already watched it, but if not, I would recommend it!
Open Range was un-owned land, government land, that was free for all to use. The locals were taking control of land they did NOT own and had no right to. One more quick note. (in this country we had Bison, not Buffalo) Also the horses we have here were brought over from Europe, they are not native to the Americas.
Excellent reaction Madison! To me, Westerns have always been about hard justice, a certain honor code, ordinary people trying to do the right thing - and a sense of true valor which Costner excels at portraying. Is his character an angel? Hardly. But his heart is in the right place. I've always thought that the gunfight in this movie was probably the best I've seen. Exciting and tense - and I'm an old man who has seen countless westerns. Revolvers and really any handgun, are just not that accurate with long shots. Once again thanks for the great reaction and comments.
Excellent film !!! Thanks for reacting to this one, one of my favorites. I hope you'll post Dances as i loved that film as well. I thought Costner was great in: JFK (1991) Kevin Costner, Gary Oldman, Jim Garrison THE BODYGUARD (1992) Kevin Costner, Whitney Houston A PERFECT WORLD (1993) Kevin Costner, Clint Eastwood, Laura Dern Those were requests, by the way. Good reaction, i enjoyed. Thanks

( Old man who knows what he's talking about... about movies, anyway. )
Absolute MASTERPIECE…criminally underrated
The fella who was working the town Livery was in the movie The Green Mile.
Robert Duvall is perfect for westerns, he just looks the part!
Try "Unforgiven" for another good modern western.
i liked this movie....fun to see duvall in a western again.
The making of Open Range is quite good also.
Ain't nothing been a surprise on this ole internet, except you! 🥰
The stable keeper is the late Michael Jeter. A fantastic character actor. They don't make them like that anymore. RIP😪
Costner and Duvall ... too guys who are always great on screen. This movie is fantastic, forth to rewatch time to time👍
Now that I started to write comment, I liked to recommed a movie Quigley Down Under.
It’s interesting none of this was mentioned in the Harry Potter books about Dumbledore’s brief time as a rancher in the old west.
horses are not indigenous to north america. they were brought during the spanish conquest of south and central america. interesting to consider what indian culture/society/warfare was like before the introduction of the horse
Was going to sign up on patreon, but don't see this reaction on patreon.
Hello Madison K. Thames, " Tig " is/ was Kevin Costner's dog.
One of my favorite westerns.
MR SPEARMAN HERE.
LOVE THIS FILM.
ROCK ON DONKEY KONG.
Awesome reaction Madison!
I enjoyed it very much!
The last western I've watched that I enjoyed was: Hostiles (2017), directed by Scott Cooper.
It was on my list to watch and finally watched it.
I imagine that you have already watched it, but if not, I would recommend it!
Hostiles is my favorite Western film❤️ Love that movie so much.
If you haven't watched "Quigley Down Under", add that to your list to react to.
I love westerns and this is one of my favorites.
Lonesome Dove is incredible.
Cool! One of the greatest gunfights in cinema history!
Great reactions to a great movie. Thanks!
Open Range was un-owned land, government land, that was free for all to use. The locals were taking control of land they did NOT own and had no right to. One more quick note. (in this country we had Bison, not Buffalo) Also the horses we have here were brought over from Europe, they are not native to the Americas.
Button is the very young Cassian Andor.
We also see Del from The Green Mile.
I thought Costner was great in:
JFK (1991)
Kevin Costner, Gary Oldman,
Jim Garrison
THE BODYGUARD (1992)
Kevin Costner, Whitney Houston
A PERFECT WORLD (1993)
Kevin Costner, Clint Eastwood,
Laura Dern
Those were requests, by the way.
Good reaction, i enjoyed. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed! My reaction to Dances with Wolves is on my channel-but it’s blocked in some countries unfortunately.
@@MadisonKThames 'Didn't realize that, thanks. I'll check it out.

I think you've been hacked -
There's a reply here saying to telegram you to get some prize. I don't know if you can see it.
Just letting you know.
Westerns have so much heart, everything is stripped of the patina of civilization and individuals stand out in stark relief for who they are against the the vast honesty of the land.
This movie was almost never made. Financial woes, Duvall broke six ribs, Costner with appendicitis throughout filming. RIP Michael Jeter.
Best movie gunfight ever!
El Mirage, Arizona
