Yes, Open Range has enough grit and honesty to come across as really authentic. Don't get me wrong. I like Clint in his westerns but they have an element of the stylized and surreal.

I had a Birds Eye view to the whole movie as I had a part in it… as one of Mac’s boys. (14 in the credits)
Being in the gunfight, saloon scene, mop-up of the gunfight … it gave me a great perspective of this video you just made.
Another thing you didn’t know was the set he built was excellent and the beautiful native reserve that he built it on was going to use the set to hire it out for other movies in the future.
After filming stopped, they were cleaning up and burning debris, and the town actually caught on fire accidentally and the whole thing burned down. Very sad! The barn that Percy was in was exquisite and the set was excellent.
I ended up with 18 days on set and worked with Kevin and Robert in my first scene and first day … my dialogue scene with both.
Quite a moment for a young actor to come to set and first day to be alongside those icons … me being from Calgary Alberta only 45 minutes drive from set.
Kevin was “pained” and intense … it seemed. But professional and so Personal at the same time.
But we all know why later as we found out he was suffering with a lot of pain from appendix issues.
My wife I like to dance and went out to a local Latin dance place after our first day of shooting and Robert and his wife were there, as she was from Argentina.
It was very surreal in Calgary at a place we like to dance at, sitting next to and chatting with Robert and his wife… as a coworker.
I have been overseas with the military in 1993 peacekeeping, as an infantry soldier, and had watched “apocalypse now”… and made a comment to my buddy that wouldn’t it be amazing to work with Robert Duvall as a young actor.
Few years later my buddy was watching open Range and there I was working with Robert Duvall… It was one of those moments in life for sure!!
Probably one of my favorite films was “Robin Hood, Prince of thieves” or “untouchables” and of course, “dances with wolves”…
So to be auditioning and then get picked to work on this film was quite an experience for a Calgary actor.
I will always cherish my time on that set and project… And I really enjoyed your video.

Along with Unforgiven and The Searchers, Open Range is IMHO one of the best westerns ever made. Admittedly The Searchers was a stylized 50's version of what people thought a western should be, but the story line runs much, much, deeper. And although the shootout of Open Range may have been what got it the 'R'' rating, the shootout is one of the most realistic and authentic scenes. Contrary to popular belief, shootouts on the American frontier were very brief, very chaotic, and very violent. Something that Costner captures extremely well in Open Range. Have not yet seen Horizon but plan to very soon.

It was really refreshing to see a movie that was able to do away with the 1950's Hollywood creation of the "fast draw" scene. The shootout scene in Open Range was much more realistic with the combatants using their sights instead of shooting from the hip.

First of all-we are fans of the western genre(we donate every year to the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum), second, we give the people the benefit of the doubt. Especially Kevin Costner, who has a background for this sort of thing.

I’d have to go with Open Range, but it’s not truly a fair comparison as I’ve only seen Part 1 of Horizon. Even though I liked it, it’s designed to leave you hanging and make you want to see Part 2, it’s not meant to be taken as a standalone film. Even though it’s 3 hours long, so many characters and situations are introduced that you don’t get to know them in any depth and of course the majority of the storylines are left unanswered. I can’t help but feel it would have been more financially successful as a Miniseries like Lonesome Dove.

Really enjoyed this insight into one of my all time Top 10 westerns. Thank you. But wasn’t it The Fisher King that got Michael Jeter noticed as a character actor in Hollywood? Along with the Green Mile? I don’t think anyone cared about people’s acting chops in Jurassic Park 3, did they? I mean, it wasn’t a, “bad,” movie, but it wasn’t all that good either. And it would be hard to argue that movie earned anyone a casting spot anywhere else, when Jeter was by then a familiar face to movie goers? The Fisher King was his first break from TV into movies and a memorable performance that won him some minor award nominations nevertheless.
I know, I splitting hairs a bit, but that’s what movie buffs are for, right? But, thanks regardless. You have great taste in movies.

You can’t put these two movies against each other. First of all, we don’t even get to see Part Two of Horizon on the big screen! Second, they are both wonderful movies with wonderful characters in them. Kevin Costner does not make sloppy movies. Kevin Costner is one of the best writers, actors, directors in the business today. Both movies are amazing, just like Kevin Costner!

After 'Horizon' .. Costner might be working for Uber or Lyft .... Talk about a bomb.

Open Range [2003] ★★★★★ (5/5): I consider Open Range to be one of the finest films of all time-not just among westerns. I'm not sure how this movie stacks up against other westerns because I don't often watch westerns. I like them, but to me, most of what this movie got right doesn't depend on it being a western. Charlie & Boss are damn near perfect characters. Flawed individuals who are morally in lock-step. If they were too perfect we wouldn't like them. Just the same, Open Range is a damn-near perfect film.

Never saw Horizon but to me Open Range is the best western ever made.

Tig is also the name of the Character that Kim Coates, the man Costner shoots in the head, in Sons of Anarchy.

Yeah, there is no way this movie should've been given an "R" rating. Someone at the MPA must've had a beef with Costner.

With all the details he got right I have no idea how that made it thru the editorial process.

Unfortunately I haven’t seen Horizon but I thought Open Range was a great movie. I love western movies. I think Kevin Costner n Clint Eastwood are one the best directors.

Open Range is a fantastic movie and Annette Benning has always been a beautiful woman. For those of you who haven't broken a rib, the narrator says it isn't a big deal, uh.... Yes it is. It's excruciating. Every time you breathe it hurts like crazy.
