I grew up with this at family get togethers, though we knew it under another name. I'd add the statement that if you can avoid devouring it the first day, it is way better the second day after it's had time to firm up so the layers have more texture variation.
You are right to let the dessrt set a while,,We on the other hand can hardly wait to eat our sweet home made desserts. Just as soon as we can cut a slice of pie or anything..Same with homemade fudge.. :)
The beauty of this dessert is that you can always change it up by using a different pudding flavor. Lemon is amazing using this recipe. Yum!

So delicious, Thanks for sharing! This brings back the days when our families first loved the 4 layer delight..To this recipe you can add a vanilla pudding layer .Plus the chocolate pudding. layer then top with cool whip..Or whipped cream.. .Home made is good also Reddi Whip which i now use in my homemade chocolate cream pies. Reddi whip is real cream..Cool whip has so many listed questionable ingredients in it...This dessert looks so good! Yum!
We called this Four Layer Chocolate Pie and it is absolutely fabulous! Now that you have jogged my memory, I'm going to make one for the family St. Patrick's Day get-together. I might just tint the white layers with green food coloring and add some mint to the chocolate. Thanks!
Or use Pistachio pudding mix....I love the stuff and this receipe is a perfect way to blend with other items....
Wanda may I make a suggestion when you take the lid off of your tall Cool Whip add a teaspoon of pure vanilla and stir it all around the flavor brings out the taste of the Cool Whip almost like homemade and then when you’re finished with your layers put your coat put your floor layer desert in the icebox for at least two hours before you cut into it I think it would be in chilled is even better thank you for reading
We make a pie almost exactly like that topped with crushed Oreos and pecans. Some call it Mississippi Mud but we call it Trash Pie. Big pleaser and easy to throw together.

This dessert is what we call Gurtle Buster here in Louisiana...my oldest son does not like chocolate but he always asks me to make this one for him...he LOVES it! :-)

I make this dessert but but with lemon pudding. Not a fan of chocolate. I also use real whip cream instead of that cool whip

Wanda may I make a suggestion everything is great when you open your large bucket of Cool Whip add a teaspoon of vanilla flavoring and stir it real good that just a teaspoon make such a difference it makes it almost taste like the real Cool Whip you might buy scratch you try it and see what you think and I always if the I’m making this and I use the Pyrex like you I put it in the icebox for at least an hour or two before I let anyone cut into it because it’s even better when it’s chilled

I make this dessert and I put cherries and crushed pecans on the top of the cool whip ...it is very yummy! :-)

LOL This mixer is that OLD! I really need to invest in a newer one, but most are just throwaway junk. As long as this one works, I will keep using it.
I have some questions...have you ever made this recipe with (a sugar substitute like monk fruit) and the pudding a sugar free version? Also, have you ever seen this recipe with a graham cracker crust version. I feel like I’ve seen this in different versions. Although the graham cracker version would also be packed with sugar.

You could use sugar-free pudding and whip.

asking about your pecan cookies,i use 2cups pecan 2 egg whites,3/4 cup of brown sugar.cook for 12 to 14 min at 375° they a little crumble and sticky on bottom,is something wrong?
I have had that happen some lately. Possibly cut the sugar a little and see if they hold together better. Or cook them a couple of minutes longer.
Wanda, I will try this with soft goat cheese replacing the cream cheese. I will probably be the only one to eat it from my family. They dislike goat products from having to drink goat's milk when young. I've had a life-long cow milk allergy.

@Tamara Butterworth omgosh its delicious! Crust is made with vanilla wafers and butter then baked as Wanda did. Then a layer of cream cheese with powdered sugar and a little cream (or you could use cool whip instead of the cream), for the pumpkin layer its 1 can of puree, 2 packs of instant vanilla pudding mix and 2 cups of milk whipped together, and last layer is whipped cream topped with crumbled vanilla wafers! Its sooooo good!

Wamda, will this work with real whipped cream? Cool Whip is deadly.My Grandma.made this in choc or lemon and called it Choc or Lemon Lush.
Hey dear lady do you want to send it over the top when do you use Cool Whip and your recipe add a dollop of a vanilla pure vanilla and it will be just like homemade so try that next time darling don’t leave out the vanilla
☀️ When we made this it was called:
"7 Layer Chocolate Delight"
... and it was Delicious, (Because we made it with Homemade Pudding or the Jello Pudding that must be cooked). (... and I make and have Homemade Vanilla Extract, Vanilla Beans from Madagascar)
🚫 No Instant Pudding was allowed in our House, lol, (My Parents were Professionals, Owned Restaurants all ther lives.)
The pecan crust
1) The Cream Cheese layer,
2) The French Vanilla Pudding layer
3) A layer of Whipped Cream
4) The Chocolate Pudding layer
5) another layer of Cream Cheese
6) a layer of either regular Vanilla or Chocolate Pudding
7) Layer of Whipped Cream
Sprinkle top with Slivered Almonds, or Shaved Dark Chocolate, or both ...
🏅 It takes longer but there is no comparison, I've tasted the Instant version and it is not close.
🔑 We use plastic wrap over the pudding to prevent the skin that forms.
🔑It's best to prepare the puddings in the morning or a day ahead, and then it goes Quick
Chill 3 hrs minimum before serving.
You must; Treat Yourself to this Original Version and ENJOY!!!
