Sorry for your loss. My dad checked out recently at 98 a decorated war hero WWII he had tons of friends. Now, he can be with my mom again, oh well ya can’t have everything.
My dad who was from 1926 and passed away a long time ago, preferred his voice to all others. More than Sinatra (who was considered the best from his era). And a friend of his who passed away just now, and was from 1929, she had this song played at her funeral. Brings back memories.
Nat King Cole had a voice that could melt hearts. You mentioned that you haven't listened to his duet with Natalie Cole, please do it soon. Hearing her sing his classic "Unforgettable" with him(digitally) is award winning, literally!
Jay and Amber you should listen to Ray Peterson,s The Wonder of Yor or for yourpiano 6:25 Johnny Rivers Rocking Pneumonia and Boggie woogie. Flu. I think you’ll like them. Keep up the good work. I,m 75 nad love arching your reactions. Thanks
Nat King Cole was one of the best. He was from the same generation as Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra. But he didn’t have the long life they did. He was only 45 when he passed away from cancer. Like so many of that generation he was a heavy smoker. I remember when he had a short-lived variety show on TV. My parents loved him. His voice was like velvet. Thanks for the great reaction on him. 👏👏🇨🇦
They couldn’t get any sponsors because he was black and potential sponsors worried that, especially in the South, they would be boycotted. The network ran his show anyway with no sponsorship. 😢
He was my late Dad's favourite singer. His diction is perfect, you can hear every word. No hymns at my Dad's funeral, just his two favourite Nat King Cole songs.❤
He is one of the very Best singer of all time. Mona Lisa, Unforgettable, Too Young , Pretend . Rambin Rose , Nature boy , The Hazy Lazy Days of Summer.
My late aunt always said Nat was her favorite singer because "when he sang a song, it was as though he was singing it just for you." What a voice! It's hard to believe he's been gone since 1965. You need to listen to him singing Hoagy Carmichael's "Stardust." It's magical.
Did you know that on Nov 5 ,1956, Nat King Cole became the first African American to have his own nationally televised TV show? It began as just a 15 minute show, but soon was lengthened to a full hour.😊😊😊
I just collapsed after a tough day of going to my vascular doctor, thinking that he would have to take either the toe or foot, but Thank God, it was only an infection. Now that I hear the smooth, calming voice of The Great Nat King Cole, I am totally relaxed. Great reaction Amber & Jay. By the way, I made the Uber driver laugh hysterically today. 😊
I love this era of music. Not only because of the songwriting skills, the musicality & the fantastic voices, but because you can hear every word they're singing. The clarity is unsurpassed, & 60 years on I can still sing along with NKC and remember every word.
The legend was that Nat was the piano player for a band in a club. When their singer didn't show and Nat announced the singer wasn't here tonight but they would still be playing music , a guy at the front apparently shouted why don't you sing for us then. It's never been confirmed or denied ,but if true Oh to have been in the audience when that voice came out . Superb singer with a voice as smooth as silk and as sweet as honey. What makes him a great is that diction and phrasing in his voice , completely recognisable
One of Nat King Cole's biggest hits was "Unforgettable." Many years after his death, his daughter Natalie recorded the song and it was produced as a duet with her father, cleverly mixing in his rendition of the song with her singing flawlessly. If you react to it, make sure you use the video of their duet.
I had a couple of jazz appreciation classes in college, taught by someone who was a guitarist for big band leader Benny Goodman. I remember him saying the singer who had the best diction of all time was Nat King Cole. It's true -- you can make out every single word he sings. Perfect annunciation.
A true superstar!! What a voice he had. On a really sad note, just wanted to say RIP Sinead O'Connor who has sadly passed away at just 56! Her version of Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U is legendary of course and on this channel. But others like Troy, Mandinka , Three Babies, Emporors New Clothes and so many more showed her songwriting talent. A voice of an angel taken from us too young, like her fellow countrywoman Deloris. So sad
I’m an ageing old punk but even I know class when I hear it . Pre 1976 THIS guy was my hero ! Great composer , arranger and pianist but especially, vocalist … sheer bliss listening to him 👍🏴
This is actually the first Nat King Cole song I remember hearing when I was a little kid. My mother had the 78 RPM single! She was a huge Nat King Cole fan. She loved all the great crooners.
Whenever I'm feeling stressed I play Nat King Cole. Never fails to calm me down...I get wrapped up in that beautiful voice and the world starts to look a lot brighter very soon. Many wonderful performers back in those times, but none better than Mr. Cole.
I love you two and your reactions. My parents used to say he had a voice like velvet. He was raised in a tough time for black people , tough for working white fold as well but tougher for black folk. Yet Nat was so loved by everyone. His best pal was Mel Torme who wrote the 'Christmas Song' with Robert Wells in the blistering hot summer of 1945. They were so hot ad there was no such thing as air conditioning then, that they decided to write a song about winter just to keep mentally cool at least. Apparently they wrote the song that very day and were so pleased they took it round to Nat's place who by all accounts when heard it said in that voice of his " hey that's my song'. There were I believe 5 versions with the last one being the one we know and love with Nat finally getting his way adding orchestra to the sound. One of the highest royalty yielding songs of all time.
@@mattfrank5811 You're right. I know there's quite a few more that can be on that list. There's Vic Damone, Andy Williams, Johnnie Hartman, Bobby Vinton, Jerry Vale, and many more. I would even include Harry Connick and Michael Buble.

There is actually a virtual duet with Natalie and Nat singing this song. It's amazing, as it the virtual duet of "Unforgettable!" They are both worth a listen, even if you don't do them as a reaction. God bless you both and keep putting smiles on our faces!
Everyone always say Frank Sinatra is the best or Dean Martin, but for my money, the king of crooners IS Nat King Cole ❤ “Stardust” is my favourite by him. “Straighten Up and Fly Right”, “Let There Be Love”, “L-O-V-E”, “The Very Thought of You”, “Walking My Baby Back Home”, “Almost Like Being in Love”, “For Sentimental Reasons”… and so many more. The man could do no wrong ❤ Amber, you are so right, they just don’t make love songs like this anymore.
If you want to react to Nat, you have to react to his TV performances. They're incredible. Given how basic the sound recording of the day was, it's almost unbelievable how perfect his voice sounded on those shows. You also get to see that magnetic smile and gentle personality that made him such a beloved star.
The type of song that is best enjoyed by closing your eyes and letting the music fill you. This song makes you long for a love like he describes in the song.
This man’s voice was like velvet. I love his song “Day In, Day Out”. With the modern day remix. And his song “Unforgettable “, as a duet with daughter Natalie. I’d love to see y’all react to her more. One f my favs by her is “Annie Mae”.
His voice could do no wrong, imo. Exquisite! He has a lighthearted one that is nice to listen to, and it's especially for summer...."Lazy, Crazy, Hazy Days of Summer".
and the middle of winter too as i'm in Australia living in the mountains and it's so beautiful listening to him before dozing off to dream another dream.
Someone once said, "Fall not in love. It will stick to your face". The beautiful, heavenly "Stardust" is my favorite Nat King Cole record. With Sinead O'Connor's passing, I recommend the very sad and sweet "My Special Child".
I'm a Gen X er and I love Nat King Cole. He started out as one of the best Jazz Pianists with his Nat King Cole Trio the late 1930s to 1940s and became one of the best crooners in the 50s until in untimely passing in 1965. His voice is amazing and I'd recommend his "Autumn Leaves" and "Straighten up and Fly Right" with the trio.
Nat King Cole went to the Philippines on tour (I grew up there) and while he was there he heard a song that the Filipinos absolutely LOVE, called "Dahil Sa Iyo" (Because of You). He heard it, he loved it, he learned it, and the VERY NEXT NIGHT he performed it on stage. They went absolutely wild for him because his performance was so beautiful, so heartfelt, so gentle and romantic. He earned his place in their hearts that night. What an amazing gentleman.
Cole did a remarkable job on Dahil Sa Iyo, but my wife smiles every time she hears it. The American accent just comes through at times. But you're right, he probably became the most loved American singer in the Philippines that night.
He always made it sound so smooth and effortless. One of the absolute bests. These classic American standard songs are so beautiful and each singer made it their own.
Without question, Nat King Cole was one of the best male pop/jazz singers of the 20th Century. He and Frank Sinatra were two singers that literally made Capitol Records a giant in the record industry. Both made use of two of the best arrangers/orchestra conductors of the era--Nelson Riddle and Gordon Jenkins. This particular recording used Gordon Jenkins. For all of his vocal prowess, Cole started out as a jazz pianist, one of the best, at that. My dad, a professional jazz musician in his younger days, saw Nat King Cole perform with his piano trio before Cole even really started to sing, then later when he was singing with a full orchestra. Much as my dad loved Cole's singing, he always wished that Nat King Cole would have made more jazz piano performances in his later, and sadly cut short career ended by throat cancer. Nat King Cole was said to have smoked five packs of cigarettes a day, and never was without a cigarette unless he was singing or sleeping.
The arrangement and production on this recording are absolutely sublime, and then on top of that you have Nat King Cole's rich, elegant vocals and it all adds up to a musical masterpiece. Nat was one of the giants - right up there with Sinatra and Crosby.
His final project was a western comedy called Cat Ballou. I'd highly recommend it for your movie channel. He was filming it and commuting to Las Vegas to perform live, all while suffering from N-stage lung cancer.
This was re-released and went to No1 in December 1987 in the UK. My Grandfather died that week, I will never forget the shock of my Grandmother who's lived for him. This song summed up their life perfectly, it was like he was saying goodbye to her. She died of a broken heat 9months later, couldn't live without him.
First off, great reaction guys. I was so sad to hear of the passing of Sinead O'Connor, another great talent gone too soon. And you have to listen to the duet between Nat King Cole and his daughter Natalie Cole singing, "Unforgettable." It was recorded years after his death, in fact, Natalie did an entire album of his music. But the video of "Unforgettable," was special. And we soon lost Natalie as well. I was telling my sister the other day, that with Tina passing, we only have a few bona fide STARS left. But with people like you guys wanting to listen, maybe we can keep their legacies alive.😢😢❤❤❤
On the top of that iconic mountain of singers! His voice is unforgettable you don’t have to know who it is you hear it you know who it is, and it’s beautiful In forever memorable❤
YES! Check out the duet with Natalie!!! It's amazing! The technology that enabled her to sing a duet with her late father was new and mind blowing at the time.
Great reaction. Nat King Cole is my all-time favorite music artist for a reason. I'm a huge classic jazz fan. Had he simply only played the piano, he would STILL be remembered as one of the greatest pianists of all-time - right up there with Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Earl Hines (his idol), Errol Gardner, Red Garland, etc. Then you throw in that voice? That's not even fair. Unbelievably talented - and made it look easy. As for the orchestras that backed singers in those days, any one of those musicians would out-class anything that came out of post-Beatles rock. You had to know your stuff - modes, theory, keys, etc. Stunning levels of ability.
Grew up in the Beatles Era, but am so grateful to my mom who loved Nat, Tony, Frank, Andy Williams, Steve and Edie Gorme, Mel Torme, Etta James, Bessie Smith, Nancy Wilson, Julie London, Mills Brothers, Pearl Bailey. Although I love Good Old R&R, I cut my teeth on the GREATS . Thank you mom.
The orchestrations…the arrangements…could make or break a great crooner. Some of these orchestrations are equally as good as the song and artist who is singing it! Stunning!
At Nat King Coles funeral, Mel Torme had this to say about Nat. "When Nat sang, GOD said aah, perfection"
Sounds right
My Dad who recently passed away at 87 years old described his voice as "the smoothest whisky". Love your videos.
Your Dad is right on!!!! I am sorry for you and your family's loss.

Totally agree with you.. For me Nat King Cole had the ultimate crooner voice.. It was so beautiful.
My mother co-starred in a movie with Nat in 1948 called Killer Diller. She said he was a really nice man and it was an honor to meet him.
Great memory!

No hymns at my Dad's funeral, just his two favourite Nat King Cole songs.❤
Great comment. I was just saying to someone that the singers of old use to enunciate every word perfectly. No mumbling!
My late father's favorite singer was Jim Reeves but he also liked Nat King Cole and Bing Crosby.
One component of his style is his timing. He sometimes hits a note just a half a beat late. He makes you anticipate... ❤
He is one of the very Best singer of all time. Mona Lisa, Unforgettable, Too Young , Pretend . Rambin Rose , Nature boy , The Hazy Lazy Days of Summer.
An absolute national treasure .❤
oh, and Stardust !?!!
He has the most smooth voice. He was my Mum's favourite singer.
This man’s voice was so beautiful and soothing I ever heard!
it’s the purity and easy earnestness of his voice. Plus man he sure was a swinging jazz trio leader.

Yes, magical. Like floating among the stars on Nat's silky baritone.
My favorite.
Stardust and Autumn Leaves are my favourites. My late mum loved him and played his records all the time.
Well said. “It’s like he’s singing just to you.”
Agree, his version of Stardust is spellbinding
One of the gentlest, sincere & intriguing voices ever
An absolute classic, you hear it once and it will be with you forever.

Natalie's duet with her Father to "Unforgettable", unforgettably amazing.

Nat was a jazz pianist before becoming a lead singer. And wow, what a singer! I still melt and feel so peaceful whenever I hear his voice! 🎹
That makes a lot of sense when you hear him sing. While you listen, replace his voice with piano, and it fits perfectly.

Favorite singer singing my favorite song. He melts your heart. Also said to be one of the kindest human beings ever.
My Daddy used to dance me around the living room and sing along with Nat! My heart is full. RIP Dad 1981.
We had Nat King Cole in our house when I was a kid. My father was born in 1919 and he loved swing, crooners, etc. I love them too
Nat King Cole will always be a treasure. ❤❤❤
This is my favorite Nat King Cole song! It’s such a beautiful song!
YES! Check out the duet with Natalie!!! It's amazing! The technology that enabled her to sing a duet with her late father was new and mind blowing at the time.
Check out his duet with his daughter "Unforgettable". Of course, the duet was put together many years after his death. Great song.
Cole's oldest daughter, Natalie, sang a virtual duet with her father. It featured Cole's iconic Unforgettable. It's a memorable video.
That voice is truly a gift.
He was one of four brothers, all who sang.
His brother Freddie was a Jazz singer, who performed for 70 years. He died in 2020. Worth a listen.
Nat King Cole - "Straighten Up & Fly Right"
This is an up-tempo fun song.
Natalie Cole is great too; "Our Love", "I've Got Love On My Mind", "This Will Be", she has many great hits!
Great suggestions 💖
Orange Colored Sky is one of my favorites
Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald are my favorite singers. Nats voice is spectacular!
The orchestrations…the arrangements…could make or break a great crooner. Some of these orchestrations are equally as good as the song and artist who is singing it! Stunning!
