The last company running Lake City wasn’t too shabby either, imho.
About time, it seems almost all mfg have been putting out neutered 5.56 for the past two years
Even Underwood is neutering most of their ammo
@@AlaskanBallistics idk why they would do this
@@nelsonr1467 they're putting out a huge quantity of rounds. If they're saving one grain of powder per round, and put out a million rounds... around 7000 grains per pound, $30 per pound (just for ease of calculation, they're probably paying less in bulk) comes to around $4300 saved.
NSSF estimated 12 billion rounds sold in 2021. If every round was shorted one grain, ammo manufacturers save around $51 million.
It's probably less nefarious than that, they're probably just trying to stretch what powder stock they have... but it's pretty easy to see why they'd keep doing it.
Test out of a 24" barrel, claim those are your velocity numbers, profit.
Thanks! Your tests have been helpful as I research which true M193 ammo I need to stockpile
Looks nice. Around me the stuff goes for $13 / 20rds. Only thing I've found cheaper was bulk IMI online.
Matt, your 16” barrel results look similar to what I got with this ammo several weeks ago using my Steyr AUG with 1/9 16” barrel, conditions were as follow:
1,357’ Elevation.
78° F, Sunny.
89% Humidity.
30.14 Barometric Pressure.
12-shot averages, chronograph set @ 15’ from muzzle:
• Winchester 55 grain M193:
3,104 FPS
52 FPS Extreme Spread
13.78 Standard Deviation.
*NOTE: Excessive flash on all shots.
Tested these two that day as well:
• PMC XTac 62 gr LAP (M855):
2,984FPS.
98 FPS ES.
25.16 SD.
*NOTE: No flash signature or excess smoke upon firing.
• ADI F1 62 gr (M855):
2,932 FPS.
65 FPS ES.
20.26 SD.
*NOTE: No flash signature but, lots of smoke discharge.
🍻
Awesome, Thank you for the data!
@@BuffRANGE anytime!
Yeah the Winchester does seem like it’s lacking some flash retardant or something as I get huge fireballs out of my 10.3” barrel and I have the same Primary Arms 3X micro prism on mine. Actually can blind you for a second each shot, but for the velocity numbers, I’ll deal with it lol.
Glad to see you are a man of culture with that Spaceballs reference.
Had to use the Schwartz :)
Especially when surrounded by assholes 😂
I can feel my sinus pressure changing just thinking about the 7.5in
We need an updated test on Frontier M193 especially since it’s being produced by Lake City as well.
Frontier and Winchester M193 are my go-tos. Fortunately, they are commonly sold at Academy Sports.
@@petesheppard1709 Yes both are solid rounds, it was nice to see Winchester white box start kicking up velocity back to M193 spec.
Reddit guys say frontier blows guns up lol
@@GuacIsExtra99 A good place to lose your sanity. Of course, it's easy to blow up a gun with Frontier; just obstuct the barrel.
@@GuacIsExtra99I ordered 500 rounds of frontier m193 back in 2019 when they were issues. In the first 60 rounds I had four primers blow out and get stuck in the chamber of a DD. Didn’t take any chance and got rid of that lot.
Winchester has always made hot shit. I remember about 20 years ago getting a brick of .22 Winchester wildcat that was overcharged lol
I’ve been paying $0.50 - $0.70 per round for Winchester Lake City M193 for this exact reason. The accuracy is acceptable, but not good. The velocity is excellent though
This explains why Winchester ammo usually costs more, it's real M193 ammo. I know in the past, when shooting PMC 223 55 grain and then jumping to some Winchester 556 55 grain, it felt and sounded like a hotter load out of my 20" rifle. I have no Chrono so no real way of know how much hotter it was and from this video, it's a hotter load and by far one of the better 5.56 loads. Thanks for reviewing and testing it buddy.
That's the problem with shooting 223 and using 556 for defense. Besides the fact you can feel it your poi will be off by a few inches at 50 yards and a lot at 200.
@@TheDkb427
Yup. Then again, I don't mind if my poi is off when shooting ammo my gun isn't zeroed for. I more or less try to do reload drills, times shots, stuff like that when I'm running various ammo types. I don't like doing that, but when you can't get the ammo you want you'll take what you can get. I dedicated my 16" for my hd AR, so I only shoot my ammo of choice out of it every once in a while to make sure everything is zeroed and to test things.
I just recently shot pmc bronze .223 55g and then winchester 193 though the same rifle, 16" mid lenght. the pmc cycled perfectly, except would not lock the bolt back on the last round, the 5.56 functioned 100% and locked the bolt back.
@@mtnbound2764There are some 556 chambered barrels rated for use ONLY with “full power” M193 and/or as a suppressor host rifle.
These barrels have a very conservative gas port size so 223 often just doesn’t have enough gas for reliable cycling.
If that’s not the kind of AR build you have, it sounds like you’re undergassed. If you’re still having issues with 223 def start by checking your gas block alignment and BCG’s gas key. Worse case scenario you may have to open the gas port on the barrel just a tad
*FINALLY!* holy crap I've been waiting a very long time for this test!!
When I was in the Army and we were briefed on the m16a1 we were told that it fired a 55 grain projectile at 3,300 feet per second
With the 20” upper that’s basically what was achieved
It’s funny because everyone was saying back in 2017 through now lake city down loaded m193 all my testing show 2009-2021 all true m193 velocity federal and Winchester even the bulk 150 round boxes
Agreed. I'm glad I grabbed as much as I did for my 16" PSA while price was still low. Even the Winchester green tip is loaded to true velocity.
Who else makes the good 5.56 193 now? Independence use to be fast, but had some reported problems and now is not available anymore. IMI ? Thanks for good video's!!!!!!
2nd this question
This is the stuff I shoot daily in my backyard that takes chunks out of my ar500 plates at 100+ yards away and has me keep ordering plates. I love it.
This shot over 3300 fps from my bca 20inch nitrided 1 in 7 twist fastest I've tested so far
Winchester my first choice 855 ammo. PPU my second choice. Got to love the volicity of both. Accuracy and clean rifle after about six to eight firings is a must. Thank you Matt !
So glad I stacked up a few boxes of these pre pandemic.
That's the only ammo I buy for my 5.56 rifles. It's consistent and the brass is really good quality.
Dang those are good numbers.
I was under the impression that true M193 was not made for civilian sales. Apparently, there are other specifications other than just the velocity that designate the loading to be true M193.
Very true! There’s a huge MIL PDF for all the specs. Now whether or not this ammo meets those other specs there always seems to be rumors that something about it failed to meet spec.
Crimped primer and sealed bullet and primer are the other specs as far as I know. It’s close enough since the crimped primer was for firing out of the M249 saw. The only one I’ve seen meet all specs is Q3131 that comes with the red sealant and crimped primer.
This is what I mainly see and have in my ammo cans, great to see this 😎
Awesome! I just picked up a couple 200 round boxes of this stuff. Happy I did now as I usually buy federal American Eagle m193
This should be the same since it's both from lake city
@@fujimi715 of course it’s the same. The only thing different is the packaging
@@jstud999 wasn't sure if you were aware Winchester took over lake city. I found out by looking at the headstamp
Thnx
thank you for doing a 14.5"! i love that length personally
I called out Winchester m193 as the best commercially available copy of the military loading out there. Q3131 is even better as I think that’s the Israeli version with the sealed primers.
Yup. All the IMI 55gr I got has sealed primers and the knurling on the bullet going into the case.
This may meet M193 specs but Hornady Frontier FR200 is still my go to for better consistency and accuracy while maintaining over 99% of the velocity. The extra 4 cents per round is worth it IMO.
Nothing wrong with that. I know there are reports of issues with Hornady Frontier, but that could be limited to guns with possible .223 or .223W chambers.
I suspect Frontier actually meets the velocity specs now that they are being produced my Lake City, the older Frontier stuff was loaded by Hornady.
@@427SuperSnake1 frontier has always been loaded by LC using some Hornady components.
@@BuffRANGE I misstated that, what I meant was now that they are using lake city brass and loaded to NATO spec by lake city. They used to have a frontier headstamp and no NATO cross as it was not spec ammo, I had asked Hornady about it a couple years back. And they said it was military grade but not NATO spec.
may i please say, i fucking love that every video starts with the rules of the range. i mean, i know the rules. but everybody "knows the rules" until they have a negligent discharge. it gives this shit a serious feel. and it is. so thanks for 'taking it seriously'.
I certainly agree. Having and seeing them is always a good reminder.
Not sure why people are surprised this is true spec m193 since Winchester is running LC now.
You’re the best Buffman 😄😄
Thank you very much!
I'm not a 5.56mm guy actually but I own a chronograph and have done a lot of testing for some of my peers. I honestly don't recall in the last twenty years ever seeing a 55gr do 3,000+ out of a 16" barrel. No, I'm not confusing 62gr with 55gr.
You were probably testing .223 55gr and not 5.56 pressure loads then. 5.56 pressure 55gr exceeds 3000fps by a decent margin as you can see in this video, unless it's really underpowered. Some loads like independence m193 even hit 3200fps out of a 16".
@@asdfghjk2933 the ammo was mostly cheap fodder I remember. PMC X-Tac and whatever was available at Wal Mart back when they still sold 5.56. Federal bulk and others. I specifically remember saying : "this should go over 3,000 or so" with most loads and always being disappointed. I admit that my "5.56 buddies" aren't really all that serious shooters and usually only acquired cheap bulk ammo for recreational shooting mostly. I don't think any of the ammo actually achieved true US military M193 specs.
@@craigdamage Hi Craig. Mighty fine of you to do that for your friends. I will note one thing not taken into effect. Chronographs, do no always agree with each other, also, environmental conditions such as elevation above sea level, temp, do play an impact in FPS.
In others words. You are a good person, take the fastest lot of that bunch and tell them to stock pile it.
@@rurouniad my chronograph gets near identical velocity readings as others here on RUclips and other forums when it involves all the various pistol and revolver cartridges I've tested. I am guessing the main culprit is cheap "bulk" ammo when we measured 5.56 velocities.
True m193 should easily be doing over 3000 fps from a 16”. Even some brands of 223 will average around 3000 from a 16
Ive found Winchester M913 to be exceptionally flashy. Not sure why but they definitely arent using the Military spec powder. Which is too bad as velocity is good
How long is your barrel?
I think their Q3131 is closer to spec because it has sealant and seems to match velocity closer in my rifle.
I have a 14.5 bcm upper and a 14.7 Psa upper and this makes me happy with both.
Impressive! Could you elaborate on it not having sealant? Is that for both bullet and primer? Such a shame if so! Thanks for the test!
Yes indeed. If the infographic lists "no sealant" that means I couldn't detect any on both the case neck and primer.
@@BuffRANGE dang! Thank you for the response! Keep up the great range science!
@@NWFishingSecrets My pleasure! Will do!! Thank you for stopping by!
Now I know how it soots thru my PSA. Thanx
Nice Loading 😀😊👍🏼 LC Winchester
Preordered 5.7x28mm supersonic 36 grain GPM projectile from vanguard outfitters it’s said to also be a proprietary semi-spitzer boat-tail projectile think this will be good for edc in a ruger 57
I have some for testing. VG said it's supposed to be like the Gold Dot..
@@BuffRANGE ahh that’s great I love how it was described and “supersonic” also had me intrigued thank you
Good video! Thanks.
I may be wrong and hope I am, but think that future lots of this stuff will be more tame. Once they go through this batch of powder the next will possibly be a bit faster burning and the charge will be adjusted accordingly to a more "normal", if you will, 26ish grain with the resultant drop in velocity.
I hope not, but it's a good thing to look out for!
I liked it when you would say if it's chest day or legs or whatev. Why no more?
Generally most of these are recorded after my workouts on weekends :)
I am not a slave to the notion of this cartridge being ideal for self defense and the cartridge certainly does not make any sense for target shooting since it does not inspire marksmanship development. Seems the cartridge thus will only satisfy shooters who are not at all critical about about performance, in other words, the plinking community. My experience as a Military Rifle Instructor assisting the USAMU deliver SDM Training is the Blackhills Mk262 round may be THE BEST round for highest performance in all scenarios. It for sure is the most accurate 5.56 round to mid range, having a much higher MOA wind constant than M193 or M855. At any rate, seems the only downside is cost. So if that precludes use of Mk262 you will of course suffer with other solutions.
I would certainly agree that Mk262 with the SMK is the gold standard for precision/accuracy. It's soft tissue terminal performance can be questionable because it's primary role is that of precision/accuracy. It's ability to produce short necks and devastating soft tissue destruction are a side benefit and a lot of testing so it's ability to do so can be inconsistent. Me personally the 75gr TAP 2, or the Speer 75gr give us a good blending of all performance aspects :D
I've seen Magtech M193 shoot under 3 inch groups from my buddy's varmint rifle.
Winchester white box has always ‘gone bang’ for me. Half tempted to pick up some 55ers, they’re running a rebate right now.
Didnt know this stuff was full power. Maybe because its from lake city
Have any 10mm testing lately? Federal has some interesting loads.
Heck yeah man, that’s good stuff!
'bout time! Watch the winchester m193 price on ammoseek jump 5-10 cents a round.
finally a load as good as the CBC and PMP
Curious, i wonder at what point does the barrel become to long and completely disrupt the velocity and trajectory, instead of improving it? 50 inch barrel? Lol idk
Good question. I'm not sure at what point it would impact accuracy. I'm not sure anyone has tested it that way. I'd venture to ASSUME maybe things based 36-40" barrel?
So, is Federal XM193 ball still the gold standard, with this as a decent alternative?
No primer sealant?
Federal XM193 would be good to go!
I honestly think this did pretty good. Hey man i was wondering if you can test 147 grain Gold dot
All foreign m193: sealed bullet* & primer*
U.S. m193 : nah
I just wish I could find some 77gr in my state. Literally the only two options around me are m193 or m855.
Is this safe to shoot out of a suppressor?
Hey there Buffman, do you know if the white boxed Winchester "Target and Practice" is the same load? Still advertises 3180 FPS, I'm guessing it's probably just new packaging?
If it still calls it "M193" it's likely just new packaging..
"I'm blind" hahaha
Armscor 5.56 m193 next?
The one PSA has for 7.99 per box
I could put it on the list
@@BuffRANGE forgive me for intruding, but I found this, and thought you might be interested. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.220_Swift
It doesn't specify any numbers as far as barrel length, but the primary challenge is getting a barrel that will comply with the high pressure, and a tighter turn in a shorter barrel may give high velocities, equal to a long gun.
As always, thanks for another virtuous installment.
@@BuffRANGE this one shoots a 64 grain at 3500 (2 grains heavier than a green tip), so that has to be fun! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.22-250_Remington
Algorithm feeding time.
Thanks ammo nerd. I have only about 2k rounds of win/LC m193, good stuff for hitting coke cans out to 100 yards with irons in backyard no problem. Id get the IMI, but i dont want a penny of my money going to land theives and apartheid "Israel"
By all means this is the US you are free to do as you please :)
@@BuffRANGE yes sir, thanks again!
🇦🇺😎👍Hello Matt
Ahoy!
Just got some of this
Would you choose this over ppu? Thanks for your testing!
If you need an extra 100 fps at the expense of accuracy then chose the Winchester. If you value the accuracy, go with the PPU
This ammo is dirty and accuracy is incredibly awful. I miss being able to buy Fiocchi .223 pre-covid that was just plinking ammo but shot sub-moa out of 3 different barrels. Lake City’s reputation is internet grown, gaining steam in AR chat rooms by a bunch of Fudds regurgitating shit they hear to sound knowledgeable.
Is this the same stuff that is in their 1000 (2x 500) round loose pack?
I don't see what it wouldn't be. If it's marked 5.56 NATO and M193 it likely is.
@@BuffRANGE it is marked WM193. The stuff that is 9mm fmj price on Sgammo atm (after the rebate).
Is this just a recent lot, or has Winchester been this hot for a while?
To my knowledge their M193 loading has always been on par with the top end
@@BuffRANGE Okay, thank you.
Ammo nerd. I get that, you're not the only nerdy one.
is this the same as sgm193
Someone told me they contacted Winchester and they said the service grade was the exact same as this.
Velocity is good but accuracy...meh.
That is a very good point. It’s a fine balance with 55gr FMJ bullets
