      I have a 2024 GMC sierra 1500 with a 220 amp, in the truck bed it has a 400W 120v outlet (residential style) would it run in the truck bed ? While I’m driving ? Or is that not enough?

    Update 9/8/23, used the A/C in my 130 sq ft boat, works perfectly. Nice and cool 65° consistently. Next will be my tent this winter using the heater. I purchased this unit with the 400w solar panel, tested it inside my 115° car. Brought the temp down to 90° in ONLY 5 minutes. Screen said it could run 11-14 hrs. I'm seriously impressed. Total game changer for tents and boats.

    Thank you, HOBO, for providing such an honest review of the Wave 2 AC. My friend who also purchased the Wave 2, but she ended up returning it for the exact same reason you mentioned. The inability to charge the add-on battery separately from the main unit was a significant drawback. Carrying both the battery and the main head unit, totaling over 50 pounds, and having to connect them indoors to plug into an outlet made it impractical for outdoor use. Your video would have saved her the trouble if she had watched it earlier! Your insights are truly valuable for potential buyers like us. Keep up the great work!

    • @_Spacecraft
      @_Spacecraft 6 месяцев назад

      I don't get these complaints. You can plug it directly into solar panels, or into a portable powerstation, and charge it that way. The only complaint here is that it's too heavy for your friend to lug somewhere to charge, but they make extension cords if you don't have solar or something to plug in to. It's completely practical for outdoor use.

    • @ananhabeeb9319
      @ananhabeeb9319 4 месяца назад

      I totally agree with Emma. I watched four tutorial videos about the product and this is the only one that mentioned the fact that the add-on battery cannot be charged separately from the main unit. I am happy I knew this before purchasing. As some of the people wrote: it is useful for outside use. But in my opinion, it is not useful for everyone. Let's assume that you work at an office in LA and cannot afford to rent an apartment there, so you decide to live in a van or in an RV. You plan to use the Wave 2 for cooling the van at night (8 hours on eco mode) and to take the battery with you to charge it at the office the next day using a wall ac outlet. That is impossible unfortunately. In addition, carrying both units into the office everyday would be ridiculous. Besides, using a power station will not solve the problem because charging the power station at office is more difficult because it weighs much more than the wave 2 and the add-on battery together.

      I agree that the product is much improved, but be aware that improvement may be nonlinear, with the first improvements being the nice 'low hanging fruit'. So the 'rate of progress' is likely to be a declining function, with smaller gains in future versions. I often wait for the second version of any product, but find that the wait for third versions often is not worth the opportunity cost.

    Professor, this was a great review (as usual by you). I also appreciate your simple explanation of the two tubes going outside (of room or window or vehicle). I have seen many social media comments (including under videos about similar portable AC units) that perpetuate the misunderstanding of how the tubes are supposed to be used, with some videos even saying the tester recommends putting the inlet tube inside the van (or vehicle/space) to "recool the cooled air" etc.. Clearly they are wrong, and don't understand how the units work, while others don't like the idea of "bringing in hot outside air" to be used by the unit (e.g. when used in a van). I think your explanation was clear, succinct, and helpful, so I will share this video with others in the future when they seem confused by this issue.

    I bought this last summer. And it will cool a van 10-12 degrees. Because I know many come here for information, I will just say after experimenting with various setups, you just must use the unit as instructed. My attempts to not vent the air intake just resulted in drastically reduced performance. When set up according to instructions and vented properly with the exhaust hose insulated, this thing works like a charm…putting out 46 degree chilled air!!! I dislike the time to set it up, but love that I didn’t need to drill holes anywhere in my van.

I would have done the EcoFlow Delta Pro setup but the BLUETTI deal was just a tad better. Then bought the Anker Everfrost 50L with 299wh battery for $665. Seemed like the most bang for the buck today. Total across the 3 systems saved was $2285. For that amount of savings I can now get a lot of solar panel.

    My biggest gripe is when using with a small tent, where you need to leave the unit outside the tent. The thermostat is on the outside of the tent. So the ac/heat doesn’t kick on and off automatically when the tent gets to the desired temperature because the unit is outside the tent. They need to have a plug in thermometer that can be placed inside the tent. Which I am surprised they don’t since they give you the connection to use with one of the tubes to allow you to pipe the air from the unit outside to the inside. Which also isn’t long enough for what I want to use it for, it’s 1’ to short.

    • @tracym427
      @tracym427 Год назад +4

      You would be much better off putting it inside so that it recirculates the tent air through the evaporator instead of the hotter air outside. Much more efficient that way.

    I have been impressed with ECO flow lately. When I first saw them I think they were crowdfunding and I could never tel if they were going to produce anything. But I like this idea. Might try to em see if tying it with a couple of panels might work well at my cabin in northern Minnesota. My folks are in their 90’s and I would like to have a way to cool their room off. Of course a mini split could work as well. As you say this is truly portable. That is why they can charge higher. Good on them. I hope hey make good money as they come up with these ideas.

    great review, thank you. We use a single hose portable in our bedroom and I can confirm that insulating the hose makes a huge difference in the unit's cooling ability. Being dual hose with 2 closed loops, this unit will probably be quite efficient.

    • @deniseboroughs1720
      @deniseboroughs1720 Год назад +2

      How do you insulate the hose?

    • @mikejosef2470
      @mikejosef2470 Год назад

      @@deniseboroughs1720I have a portable AC (single hose, AC power only so not portable like one of these, just room to room portable). Anyway, I insulated the hose by buying some aluminium exhaust fan ducting (the thin walled, very flexible type, not the semi rigid type). Its diameter is 3" more than the hose. I wrapped the hose in a cheap doona (I'm an Aussie... I think you call it a quilt or a comforter?). The really cheap ones, made of Dacron are best for this.
      I actually cut it so it wrapped neatly, and sewed it along the length so there were no gaps. I then taped the ends of the comforter "tube" to the ends of the hose (the hose was fully extended). The walls of the "comforter tube" are about an inch thick.
      Then, with considerable difficulty (swearing is optional but I found it satisfying if not particularly helpful) I slid the aluminium ducting over the whole thing. I then duct taped the aluminium ducting at the ends such that the tape goes from the outside of the ducting around the end and onto the inside of the hose at each end. It's crucial that the walls of the now insulated hose are airtight, so that when using the unit to heat the room, the cold air that flows through the hose to outside does not cause condensation in the insulation, mostly to avoid mould growth but also because a wet comforter is a bad insulator.
      Because the outer aluminium duct is slightly larger in diameter than the hose plus insulation, the hose still bends easily, and more importantly, it still shortens easily because the insulation still has room to bunch up. A shorter path for the air allows a better flow rate, and the scrunched up insulation is thicker so works even better.
      The insulation is superb... when the unit is on cooling mode, the duct feels barely warmer than if the unit were off. In heating mode I honestly can't feel any difference compared to when the unit is off.
      If you're not sure what I mean in any part of my instructions, just reply and I'll explain as best I can.

    • @SuperBardley
      @SuperBardley 10 месяцев назад

      . @deniseboroughs1720 Just buy some 6” insulated flex duct (used for exhaust fans), BUT do NOT make it longer than the OEM hose or you will screw up the unit.

    The question was answered @ around Min 29. Will still leave it here for everybody else 🙂
    I wonder, if this unit is bought without the battery: Will it run on DC power (aside from Ecoflow-products)? I guess this is tricky. A Bluetty AC 200 max as an example has a 30 Amp DC output (13.5V), which in best case (neglecting losses over the power cables/connectors) can deliver 405W. Aside from that, straight DC power, from another battery bank, seems to be more efficient then converting battery DC to AC and then to the Wave2, as you've shown, too. However: If the battery unit and AC converter is in the same room, and the unit is used to heat, the losses from the AC conversions are additional heat, so not lost. If battery and inverter are somewhere else, and the Wave is supposed to cool, then the picture changes to less efficiency.

    The latent heat in the conditioned space is being removed as the air is moving across the evaporator coil which causes cool air being blown out the main vent. The latent heat that was removed from the conditioned space is then rejected from the condenser coil and exhausts outside. All refrigeration systems remove heat from a location and transfers that heat to another location.

    I have been using it for a while, and I really like such a small portable air conditioner. But I also see the disadvantages of this product. 1. Because the battery can not be charged separately, it must be connected to the air conditioner to charge, which is obviously unreasonable. For example, when I use up the battery outdoors, I have to carry the air conditioner together when I get to a place where I can charge the battery. At the same time, my husband and I had planned to buy two batteries for alternating use, but this product cannot charge the batteries separately. 2. This product can only use the battery and energy storage provided by Ecoflow, and cannot use the energy storage battery limited at home. The air conditioning and battery connectors are clumsy and easy to lose, which also widens the whole machine

    Thanks for these reviews. A couple of hints/things I figured out. If you are going to hook up two 200w solar panels (like 24v Cigs or others) run them in series if you want to max out at 400w. Also if you want to hook a 12v battery box to the Wave II, you can run it with a step up transformer like 12-24v or 12-48v the last being the fastest for charging. If a 24v battery box then they do make a 24-60v step up transformer. There are some losses associated with the transformer, but allows for faster charging.

    Picked one up with the battery. Ran it down to cool my trailer from over 80 to 65 for almost 4 hours. used approx. 50% of the battery. recharged with bluetti ac200 max from AC plug quickly. Used almost 30% of the bluetti with less than 30 watts coming into the ac200max from solar. (Evening)
    So far pretty impressed. Already invested in the bluetti so the loss of wattage is a bummer but this is a better option than a mini split for my build.
    Would a cigarette 12vdc/10amp to solar chord make any difference in charging as opposed to using the AC port?

    Works well enough, achieved 15 degree difference (which felt cool inside the square drop trailer-in the shade, the lowered humidity helped a lot too) in 95F and 80% humidity weather here in Florida. I was also running two small USB powered fans to circulate the cooler air. My main complain is not being able to mechanically/manually set the unit to external drainage. Every time the unit shuts down the drainage is reset to internal, which in turn shuts down the unit when really full, which happens a heck of a LOT here in Florida. The hoses, being proprietary sizes are also a PITA to hook up to anything commonly used in small trailers. The Wave 2 was outside the small square drop due to space issues, I also wish the company made a raincoat for the unit.....

    Nice thorough review. Good point about insulating the hoses. In fact insulation is really important for the space being heated/cooled if you want a long runtime. A tent has virtually no insulation and a car with all its window sitting in the sun takes a *lot* of cooling. My Chevy Volt with its electric AC uses about 1500W just to maintain 74F when sitting in Florida sun.
    I wish their next “innovation” would be lower prices though. This is a nice unit but it is essentially a 5000btu Window AC with a few extra bells and whistles. You can get those dirt cheap (

  • @TheCornucopiaProject-bd5jk
    @TheCornucopiaProject-bd5jk Год назад +2

    Was looking forward to this review. The specs do sound promising.
    There are a few observations I made though:
    1) clearly the build in thermometer does not give a accurate picture of room temperature. A wired and/or wireless temperature probe would increase real life cooling or heating. Also if the unit is placed outside, it would never know the actual inside temperature. So a movable probe is needed.
    2) the add-on battery is $200 ? For 1000watt? That’s a super competitive price. Let’s hope they don’t notice this. 👍
    3) 12v external battery charging. You are correct that a cigarette lighter socket inside a vehicle is probably wired and fused for 10amp. However, you can buy cigarette lighter sockets with a 10’ lead and fused for 30amp. That would give you 360watt of input. Or you can wire and fuse a xt60 directly to a battery or DC distribution panel at 40amp and get 480watt (or 408watt limit) input so you can run this unit via house bank. This is needed to truly run it evenings and nights anyway.
    4) the big question is, what chemistry is the internal battery? And what are the life cycles? And does the unit allow pass thru operation or will the internal battery always be cycled ?
    5) could use smart programming. I might want it to go to fan mode 2 hours after going to bed but get it back to heating/cooling an hour before I get up. This could be done via firmware update.
    6) air intake/exhaust inside of room. Would be nice if this could also be directed with a hose. In a camper van we might want to shove this unit into a back corner due to space/design limitations. In that case we need to find a way to get the hot/cold air into the living space. This might require a stronger fan to move the air further.
    Overall, it’s seems like a solid unit. $1200 is a pretty penny though. It’s not intended for those with a tight budget. I can always hack a cheaper system, but it’s never going to come in such a neat package. My camper van has 400amp hours of 12v lithium batteries. I’ll be able to run this just fine.

    Excellent review, as always...and much appreciated. It also looks like a much better product than their initial offering, especially where charging speed is concerned. What I don't like is that these two items, the battery and heater-A/C unit, might as well be joined together, because they're more or less useless without both of them. The only exception is if you have bought into the larger Ecoflow power stations, and are willing to dedicate one to running this mini-split. I'm sure they have their reasons for not letting you run the unit directly from solar, or charge the (basically mandatory) battery without it being connected to the unit. The way they've designed this, the only real value in the two being separate is you move them around a lot more easily. At this price point, I think I'll pass.

      It’s a great unit for a small cabin that has 120VAC, you forgot that some people aren’t interested in batteries or solar to have A/C😊
      The charging system is inside the unit so that’s why the battery is attached to recharge it.

    • @jasonbroom7147
      @jasonbroom7147 Год назад +1

      @@melissasmess2773 - If you have a cabin, meaning a small stationary deployment, the EG4 Hybrid AC/DC Solar mini split is a dramatically better solution, for more or less the same price as just the base Ecoflow Wave 2 unit. If you're paying for the battery as well, the EF Wave 2 is far more expensive and delivers half as much heating and cooling capacity. It's an absolute no-brainer for a stationary setup, especially if you might add solar at a later date. The EF Wave 2 is only going to make sense in a small number of use cases, and a cabin isn't one of the, unless maybe you're worried about theft and want the heat/air to be mobile.

    If you take the suction from inside the room, you are heating warmer air or cooling cooler air which makes it operate much faster. Depending on the room, it will draw a suction. It requires the unit be inside but is likely to stretch the battery life significantly and allow running on ECO mode more keeping it easier to keep charged with solar. Saw this from a different review.
