A friend of mine is a helicopter pilot, and back in the 1980s he was working a job north of Denver. He had a turbine-powered helicopter that was on wheels. Rather than fly 50 miles back to the nearest airport, it would just fly down the hill and land at the local truck stop, shut down the helicopter, and push it over to the pumps. It ran fine on diesel fuel.

That makes me think of the Larry Hagman film, Deadly Encounter, where he drops into a gas station in his turbine helicopter and tells the guy to put in x gallons of gas and top it off with diesel. I always wondered how accurate that was.

    • @helibob2367

Used to do that with my JetRanger in South Africa. Either diesel, or illuminating paraffin, which was easily available in the 80's.
The injector nozzle on the Allison 250-C20B had to be decoked every 5 hours as a precaution. That involved leaving it in a caustic solution overnight. We never did notice any carbon accretion on the nozzle, no matter what fuel we ran! Good times 😊

It has been widened, cleared, and marked much better than the last time I landed there. Too bad you missed the hot springs. Another day, another great video. All the best.

That's right, when flying between mountains you never go down the middle, you hug one side in case you need to get out and make a 180 turn.specially in high altitudes where you don't have enough power to climb.but in the canyon at that altitude thats not a problem

Not flying though as that is beyond me investment wise as I'm all wrapped up in recording and studio work. Love planes though since a wee kid, especially piston ones up to the late 40's - the nadir of mechanical technology.

My O-200 says something like "if the engine responds normally to throttle input, it's warm enough" and that's almost immediately to any temperature. I give at least a 5 min warm up after either hanger nights or my electric cylinder head+oil pan heater. I have no oil cooler to tape off so I have to close off so e of the cowl opening. Half the opening is good down to about 0°F for full temperature, half closed off is a bit under kill for less than that but acceptable to about -15. Colder than that I'm not sure as I'd like to maintain some cooling at the base of the cylinders and not just close up the middle of the cowl out towards the edge

Ryan...you are no longer a rookie taildragger. You've got it mastered. When you land I can see you are straight down the runway. You will be amazed how much this will help you when you go back. Out of curiosity what is Vne on that beast?

Hi, could you share the name of the airstrips? Would I find them in Microsoft Flight Simulator?

    Ryan,
In the last couple videos you call the Cessna a 172. Unless I am missing something the Cessna tail dragger is a 170? At least it was when I flew one years ago.

I think I remember him saying in the previous video that it was a taildragger conversion on the 172. It is the older straight tail 172 (no rear window - likely pre 1963) which normally came with 160Hp or less (even though he commented 180Hp in a post). The 170 had the rounded tail like the 140.

Thanks, for the replies, I knew I was missing something. Good point, I should have recognized from the tail something was amiss.

It would be nice to always know the name or code of all the airstrips you are visiting. Please write it on video too.
