    Ryan give yourself some credit. You might not have the resume of some pilots but you sure impress us with the skills that you have in operating in mountainous areas where the airports have unimproved runways in areas were a lot of us will have a hard time to even find the airport. Your videos are informative and in a way positive to promote aviation in areas where I thought it was too dangerous and perhaps impossible. Always looking forward to see your next video.

    Been flying Kitfoxes for 25 years now. 1500 or so hours in 10 different ones with lots of rough, off field, and aerobatics. I've seen lots of seat pan falling issues in other ones. The zip ties work just fine if done properly. Some people trim too much of the seat pan lip off. Others don't use enough zip ties. 4 good ones along the bottom and 4 along top work fine as designed. All they do is clamp a lightweight seat pan onto the frame. They don't support any load and they get changed every year. Ive seen nervous people use hose clamps but they aren't really necessary.

    Ryan, you could make some spacers to prevent the seat from being able to drop all the way onto the control cables(rods?) Also as an A&P since 1983, any competent A&P could come up with a permanent, airworthy, fix to your seatpan issue.....If I were closer to you, I would happily do whatever it would take to repair your issue just for being able to have a conversation with you about your flying career.

    When doing ones PPL, everyone is of course taught the "pitch for speed, power for climb/descend" mantra.
    The reality is of course, as you say, a little more grey, subtle and should be adapted for conditions. Currently doing my instrument rating with a VERY professional jet pilot - his advice in the approach stage is to just switch it out, because that's the way you'd be flying a bigger piece of metal anyway. "Use pitch to aim for the touchdown zone and power to control your speed - you're gonna need to do it that way eventually so may as well make it now". I actually prefer it, as it's more intutive and accurate for the approach side of things. I've used it for some short field approaches and it works brilliantly for that too.

    • @robwilde855
      @robwilde855 Год назад

      Understood. It's definitely logical. There's a chance though that the 'new' way that's more suitable for jets could increase the danger for learners.
      Imagine a learner when beginning his landings, who one day realizes when quite close to the threshold that he's going to undershoot, so [if being taught the new way, which in addition [as you point out] is more intuitive] he pulls back the stick, without any power increase, and stalls in. The 'mantra' of the old conventional way of instructing lessens that risk.
      The reality of course is that each single control operation affects both conditions at once, or conversely, one condition can be changed without affecting the other by judicious use of both control inputs together. Now, an experienced pilot can switch from one system to the other, or just do what he wants with the plane without being conscious of any system at all. But, if a beginner is being taught, when at altitude or cruising, to add power to climb and reduce it to descend, etc, and then on the approach is expected to use the new system, that's tantamount to instructing with two diametrically opposite systems and expecting the inexperienced pupil to keep them separate.
      When I was learning there was controversy on this point among the instructors. The point of that increased risk still applies, for PPL pupils. It seems to me that not all of them are going to go on to need the jet technique, and the ones that do go on to that, are by then quite experienced enough to be able to learn the new habit within an hour or so. So, I reckon the old way is still the best.

    • @witblitsfilm
      @witblitsfilm Год назад

      @@robwilde855 Traditional definitely probably works better for beginners, but as you say, there comes a time to switch it out with experience - I would not think of pitching up without first referencing the ASI to see if things are in reasonable whack, but a beginner could easily make this mistake. Not sure how IR is taught in different countries, but here, my instructor has me flying approaches at far higher speeds than normal (the dirty little secret of IR of course being the faster you fly it, the more stable you are and the less tweaking you need to do to stay in the glidescope/localiser min deflections). Pitch for targeting the runway intercept then makes little difference to speed, which is already high. Once you breakout, in a SEP the inherent drag makes adjusting back down to SEP Vrefs with power really easy, whilst still maintaining your targeting with pitch. In a jet, you're going to need that speed anyway and would have been flying the recommended Vrefs already.

    ON the issue of the seat pan sliding down, a model 4 pilot in Canada installed a strap from aft top seat support to front support to keep the seat from sliding down onto the control torque tubes. It looks like he sewed the strap on both ends. I don't know how he sewed the cargo strap, but I would suggest two straps. If you use Harbor Freight straps you could cut out the seat pan were the hooks go over the support tubes, then place the seat cushions in da plane.

    While you're just practicing in general right now, you might want to grab a pack of cheap cones and lay out some runway options to practice on at the dry lake. Keeps you honest when you're practicing crosswind landings, and gives you a touchdown point so you can eyeball the rollout distance easier.
    Then for takeoffs, you can set a cone where you think you'll be ready to rotate and check your estimate in realtime.

    I love you work and your heart for God - as a fellow Christian aviator (hopefully a Missions pilot soon) I do question this 'off field craze', aviation has mostly been and must be the domain of the , fastidiously careful, forethinking, planning perfectionists, with no room for chancers or chance-taking, this relatively new STOL off-field craze where pilots basically seem to be taking ahuge risks everytime they put down just seems reckless and contrary to what aviation should be, it harkens back to the barnstorming days which to us who weren't there sees like the glory days of no regulation but the ratio of crashes and deaths threatened to end leisure and even commercial aviation forever, rules and regulations are necessary, cowboying and having fun is one thing in the water or on wheels but I just feel it has no place in aviation. You are probably one of the more careful aviators but its this activity I question.
