  • The WCW Invasion was supposed to be a crossover dream come true like JLA/Avengers. However, it proved to be a colossal let down. WWE had no idea want to do after winning the Monday Night Wars. Now WHAT IF... this never happened? This is a fictional scenario speculating on some of the things that could have happened if WCW was never bought by the WWF.

      Brian Rose Yeah. WWE’s actions during that time have effectively crippled the wrestling business. Sure, NJPW, AEW, And ROH are slowly building themselves up, but until we get someone who can challenge WWE, who can force them to make they changes they need to their product, it’s not looking good.

      The Sting burial boggles my mind. Him losing is fine. But to HHH? The whole wrestling world wanted a Taker vs Sting match at WM. So have Taker beat him. Could still be considered a burial to some but to me it would have been fitting. Satisfy the fans and at the same time satisfy Vince's need to show his dominance over WCW... which he still has a hard on for... over a decade later.

      Back in the day during the Monday night Wars if I remember right Nitro came was on from 8 to 10 p.m. and Raw was on from 9 to 11 and my schedule every Monday night was the same watch the first hour of WCW then for the hour that two programs overlapped I would switch back and forth but I would keep an emphasis on WCW then I would watch the last hour of Raw uninterrupted. I would give anything to change history so that WCW had won the Monday night Wars. However the other side to that sword is that with Vince McMahon and WWE growing way more ridiculous and nonsensical and Vince basically becoming a dictator throwing fans out for not wearing WWE merchandise we might not have as much wrestling as we do now. I'm going to be honest I think Vince McMahon has gone senile. I don't think it's crazy at all to think that the 2K game coming out in 2024 will probably be AEW 2K24.

    Let's be clear, about the fact that by this time (during WCW's last days), Ted Turner no longer had control (nor any ownership) of WCW. Since 1996 when Time Warner acquired & merged with Ted Turner's company Turner Broadcasting System/TBS, which was the Parent company of WCW. By the time, the merger of AOL-Time Warner was completed Ted's position (role) within the company had changed leaving Ted with no control over the fate of WCW and/or any of his former assets.

    Truth be told, Vince McMahon never actually did buy WCW itself, he only bought selected assets of the company (its trademarks, the video library and selected wrestler contracts). The company once known as WCW still exists (under its previous name of Universal Wrestling Corporation) and is still owned by Time Warner, but has basically been a dormant company since 2001, operating now only to deal with existing contracts and lawsuits.

    I remember it like it was yesterday. I got home from work one Friday afternoon in early 2001. I got on the PC and waited for the dial up to do it's thing. I went to the WWF homepage, and I saw "WWF buys WCW". I said right then and there that wrestling as we knew it was over. A year later, we got the first WWE brand extension, and things have only deteriorated since then.

    If WCW didn't sell to McMahon Jerry Jarret Bill Watts maybe even Jim Crockett or all three together could have put their money in to it. TNA was started by Jerry & Jeff Jarret who originally called it NWA TNA & had weekly programs on Wednesday nights. Had the Jarret"s bought WCW it could have very well have been NWA without the TNA banner.

What was bad about seeing guys in your own company succeed I'll never know but the grudge between Vince and Ted Turner and WCW in general goes all the way back to the fallout from the infamous Black Saturday incident in 1984. He's obviously still not over it even though WCW ceased to be its own company 16 years ago.

    With WWF buying WCW it utterly ruined pro-wrestling forever. It also put a lot of talented & entertaining talent out of work once the WWF chewed them up & shitted them out in 2001. Then the McMahons took turns pissing on the legacy, history & the WCW logo before digging a 10 foot grave & burying it for good. While Vince McMahon is the antichrist of pro-wrestling & he is a terrible human being. I really wished Eric Bischoff would have purchased WCW with rights to the video library, the WCW championships belts, & all WCW copyrights then he could have settled in Las Vegas, Nevada & slowly but gradually got WCW up & running again without idiots like Vince Russo & Ed Ferrarra to fuck it up like they did before. As a fan I really miss WCW & especially WCW Monday Night Nitro.

    • @DaveKnowsWrestling
      @DaveKnowsWrestling  7 лет назад +13

      I totally understand you preferring Bischoff buying WCW over Vince.. but I wonder would Bischoff actually preserve WCW's traditions? Sure, he would better than Russo or WWF, but he wasn't great at honoring the proud NWA WRESTLING legacy that WCW had. That just makes me wonder

    • @BigBadJerryRogers
      @BigBadJerryRogers 7 лет назад +11

      There is actually a rumor that Randy Savage did submit a bid for buying WCW, but at the time, the deal was already in development with McMahon. It would be interesting to know if this was true, a good question for Lanny Poffo that he has not been asked as far as I know, in a shoot. Hulk Hogan wrote in one of his books that he regretted not not buying it. I think everyone was surprised how little McMahon got it for.

      +Dave Knows Wrestling I doubt that, since McMahon already had WCW in the bag, and everything between them that happened earlier with Savage leaving the WWF the way he did and taking Slim Jim was enough for the lasting sour grapes, IMO. It sure would have been interesting for Savage to have gotten that one over on McMahon though, it would have given him a lot of leverage for a future deal. And then to speculate, would McMahon have made such a deal, or been stubborn enough to let Savage just walk away with it until he died in 2011?

    great video ,
    Paul Heyman once said that if ECW never went out of business, the product would be very similar to what we have today in ROH (considering ROH basically replaced ECW , that seems possible)
    he also said that they had CM punk on their "radar" around the time the company closed their doors (imagine punk in the original ECW!)
    this explains why punk went to ROH and why Heyman helped punk get hired on WWE's version of ECW

    • @DaveKnowsWrestling
      @DaveKnowsWrestling  7 лет назад +20

      The ECW/ROH parallels are many for sure. Plus, CM Punk always had ECW written all over him. I often wonder about the guys who were born just a tad too late who missed out on the promotion that they were supposed to be in.

    According to an interview with Eric Bischoff, he mentioned that the investors pulled out because TNT and TBS was going to cancel WCW programming and thus they couldn't justify investing so much money into a wrestling company without a TV deal. However, I'm sure the WCW would have gotten a TV deal with the USA Network because WWF had left them to go to TNN at the time.
    All Things Considered, WCW being bought out by WWF was the absolute worst thing ever to happen to professional wrestling. As much as Vince try to create competition within the company with the brand split, it's simple just wasn't the same as the Monday Night Wars.
    The early parts of TNA felt like they were a spiritual successor to WCW, with them ultimately repeating the same mistakes bring it in Hulk Hogan to completely train wreck the company the way he did WCW. Even if Vince McMahon did not buy WCW originally, they would have eventually been bought out anyway.

      Was never going to happen. Ted Turner owned WcW but as he said when he bought Jim Crockett promotions when he called up Vince, "Guess what Vince, I'm in the Rasslin' business". For Turner wresting was a side venture to owning Turner Broadcast. Vince's whole life revolved around the WWF now WWE.

    • @BigBadJerryRogers
      @BigBadJerryRogers 7 лет назад +13

      Turner was a devoted wrestling fan though. It was a mutually rewarding relationship for years because he provided exposure for the business and the fans keeping wrestling on his network and he had respect for the business because of the consistent revenue it brought him. Had it been up to Turner, wrestling would have remained on the air and WCW would have at least lasted longer than it did, but he no longer had control.

      The business would most likely be non-existent today, let’s say WCW buys out WWE in ‘98, but WCW goes down in ‘01 (and to be honest, ECW would’ve died no matter what), at best we would be back into something similar to the Territories, but on a much smaller level

    There was way more bad than good when Vince bought WCW. A lot of people have already commented that Ted Turner was out of power by this time, which was true. As long as he had power, WCW was still going to be there. Initially, the main guys just sat at home getting paid while the midcarders and below were on WWE television back then. Booker T was the biggest star at that time to make that transition. Booker put in a lot of dues and was mistreated in WWE. The saddest time in professional wrestling history, arguably.

    There was no good to outweigh the bad of wwe buying wcw. Wwe ruined booker,steiner,buff,ddp,sting. Tna may have had better or more investors also if guys of wcw went with jeff jarretts company. Then we might have continuing competition for wwe. I wish tna or gf would merge with lu and give wwe a run for its money. Right now is the best time. Wwe ratings are lowest, storylines are poor, one main champ title holder is a jobber and other champ shows up two three times a year. Cmon son

  • @exiverence
    @exiverence 6 лет назад +3

    Vince buying it out wasn't the problem, it was him completely shutting it down. He could have low key kept everyone employed and have had it made in the shade. Hell he could've even done the same with ECW if he wanted to. By doing this he could have easily had storylines where a few members here and there jump brands. Maybe they get "fired" from WCW or ECW and go to WWE, or get "fired" from WWE and go to the other two. Point of this, I think how Vince handled it was just bad for business.

    Brad Siegel had a lot to do with WCW being sold to Vince McMahon. Vince worked with Brad Siegel back in the 80s and they had a lasting friendship at least until the sale of WCW. Brad Siegel somehow got to be the President of Turner Entertainment in the late '90s. Bischoff wanted Siegel to sell WCW in mid to late '99 because he saw no one on the Board of Directors, except for Turner, who wanted WCW to stay alive. Siegel at first said no because he wanted to drag WCW a few feet under so it looked like WWF won because of a better product. WWF may have had a much better product but WCW would've had something good, as well. Maybe not on the same level as WWF but it wouldn't be as bad. So when WCW really fell 8 feet under it was the perfect time for McMahon to claim victory.

      There were more aspects of WCW that I liked other than just the NWO. However, I do agree with you about their management and the aimlessness the company had at times. The way you put it, it is hard to argue.

      The NWO should have died a year after it was started. Bitchoff never understood storylines run their course. The NWO should have been no more than 4-5 people and about a year after it started the storyline should have ended with WcW finally getting the win over them and disbanding them. See ROH with SCUM. Instead Bitchoff decided that every heel wrestler in WcW needed to be NWO, which just made the thing look like a joke.

      Yeah they let all there good talent jump ship because they kept sticking with the nWo and never gave the likes of Jericho Gurrero Benoit Raven Ray Msyserio ect a chance at breaking into the top 10

    The best part of how it actually played out was The Rock vs Hollywood Hogan at WrestleMania X-8. Out of any that came true that is easily and by far the greatest "dream match" in history. A friend and I ordered that PPV and I have never seen a crowd as electric as they were during that match. For that matter I have never seen a crowd takeover and directly change the entire story arch of a feud. Much less one of this high of a profile. There will never be a moment like that again, for better or worse. Literally the two biggest stars in the history of sports entertainment performing in front of one of the largest crowds ever. I know Vinnie-Mac would absolutely KILL to get another moment like this!

    The first clue that WWE didn’t know what to do with WCW. They booked the Booker/Bagwell WCW Title match on an episode of Raw in Tacoma, Washington, instead of waiting until the following week’s Raw in ATLANTA, GEORGIA!
    If the WWE had waited a whole week, they would have had a crowd more hot for the match than elsewhere.

    Vince never supported ECW with money. Not true. Paul explained in this documentary. WWE had an interest in Flash Funk but he used a song as his entry music with granted ECW 1000 dollar for every time Flash Funk was wrestling. Thats why Paul was not willing to let Flash Funk going to WWE. Wince told Paul that he will cover the 1000 dollar at that was all the money weekly ECW ever received from WWE. No other financial support ever took place. At least thats what Paul claims in this documentary. And the documentary is made by WWE so I believe that he wasn't lying. The man who told everybody that he had to send money to ECW was Jim Ross but it was not for support but to cover for the 1000 dollar ECW not received anymore because they let Flash Funk go to WWE.

    Time Warner's merger with AOL, ended WCW. Jaime Kellner refused to have wrestling on Turner Networks. Turner lost power through the merger.

    Once the AOL/Time Warner merger happened, Ted Turner had very little power. He was the reason WCW was on TV in the first place, been stated many times that Wrestling was one of the first things that helped his network so he would never get rid of it, once he lost power AOL/Time Warner were able to get rid of WCW.
    Also, the reason McMahon bought it for so cheap was because once TNT and TBS cut WCW from their networks they were essentially worthless. Bischoff was buying WCW as well as the assumed TV time slots, Vince wanted to buy WCW for the tape library and trademarks hence why it was cheaper for him.
